ISSUES ADDRESSED: The overabundance of conflicting nutrition information (CNI) and accompanying confusion and backlash are a public health concern; however, the complexity of responses to CNI has yet to be explored. The following mixed methods study brings depth to the perceptions and behavioural responses to CNI among Australian millennials to better inform successful nutrition guidelines. METHODS: An explanatory sequential mixed methods design explored the cognitive and behavioural responses to CNI in Australian millennials. Cross-sectional data (n = 204) on CNI exposure, confusion, and backlash was analysed via multivariate ordinal logistic regression. The qualitative phase thematically analysed 18 semi-structured interviews on experiences with and responses to CNI. RESULTS: Exposure to CNI via social media was positively associated with confusion. Nutrition confusion was positively associated with backlash. Qualitative analysis confirmed social media as a frequent, yet sometimes trusted, source of CNI. In addition, participants revealed using various methods to alleviate backlash while also relying heavily on traditional nutrition information (TNI) to inform dietary choices. CONCLUSIONS: The methods to alleviate nutrition backlash provide new and innovative ways to tailor nutrition messages for maximum impact. Nutrition promotion initiatives and dietary guidelines should consider the complexity of responses to CNI and modernise interventions across mediums, including social media, with clear and attractive dietary recommendations. SO WHAT?: Results can inform the drafting of the new Australian Dietary Guidelines in 2023 and how they are promoted to the community on an ongoing basis.

OBJECTIVE: Lack of recognition of asthma in childhood results in unmet asthma treatment needs and leads to the risk of sub-optimal respiratory health. The present study assessed the prevalence of asthmatic under-recognition in middle school children in Vietnam. METHODS: We conducted a school-based survey among 15,112 Vietnamese children. Most of them are aged from 13 to 14. Schools and students were recruited using multi-stage sampling. Respiratory symptoms were collected via self-report using a standardized tool from the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood. Under-recognition of asthma was defined as a presence of at least one asthma-like symptom but a negative response to having ever asthma. Associations were investigated using logistic regression. RESULTS: Prevalence of asthma-like symptoms was 27.3% and prevalence of physician-diagnosed asthma was 8.5%. Over 80% of symptomatic children were not diagnosed with asthma. Under-recognition of asthma was found more in girls (adjusted odds ratio; aOR = 1.75; 95%CI: 1.54 to 1.98). CONCLUSIONS: Asthma is significantly under-recognized in Vietnamese middle-school children. Urgent action is required to improve the recognition of asthma in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: Demographics and comorbidities associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) severity differs between subpopulations and should be determined to aid future pandemic planning and preparedness. AIM: To describe the demographics and comorbidities of patients diagnosed with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in Queensland (QLD), Australia, between January 2020 and May 2021. Also, to determine the relationship between these characteristics and disease severity based on the highest level of care. METHODS: A retrospective case series analysis was conducted using data obtained from the Notifiable Conditions System. Data on patients confirmed with SARS-CoV-2 infection in QLD were included in this analysis. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression modelling were used to analyse factors that contributed to disease severity. RESULTS: One thousand six hundred twenty-five patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection were diagnosed in the study period and analysed. The median age was 41 years and 54.3% (n = 882) were males. A total of 550 patients were hospitalised and 20 patients were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). In those admitted to the ICU, 95% (n = 19) were older than 45 years and 95% (n = 19) were male. Comorbidities significantly associated with hospitalisation were chronic cardiac disease (excluding hypertension) and diabetes, and for ICU admission were morbid obesity, chronic respiratory disease and chronic cardiac disease. No demographic factors were shown to be significantly associated with disease severity. CONCLUSIONS: Comorbidities associated with the highest level of COVID-19 disease severity were morbid obesity, chronic respiratory disease and cardiac disease. These data can assist with identifying high-risk patients susceptible to severe COVID-19 and can be used to facilitate preparations for future pandemics.

During the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, the state of Queensland, Australia, had relative success in containing viral transmission, presenting a unique case for potential insights into effective crisis management. Limited research exists into the communication style and effectiveness of Chief Health Officers (CHOs) throughout pandemic scenarios. Using an adapted Crisis Emergency and Risk Communication (CERC) framework based on 12 themes which indirectly assess domains of trust, credibility, transparency, and accountability. A content analysis of 107 press conferences dating from January 30th to December 24th, 2020 was conducted to analyze crisis communication style delivered by the Queensland CHO and guest speakers. Our analysis found that most communication aligned with the CERC framework, suggesting that adherence to CERC themes in crisis communication may have played an important role in the state's success. However, areas which were lacking included themes relating to efforts to address, search and gather knowledge. Analysis also revealed that some CERC themes overlapped or were missing, thus triggering the development of a modified framework to provide a more succinct coding model. Our findings demonstrate the importance communication plays in successful crisis management and the modified framework can be applied to analyze communication at national and sub-national levels.

OBJECTIVE: Excess salt consumption is causally linked with stomach cancer, and salt intake among adults in Vietnam is about twice the recommended levels. The aim of this study was to quantify the future burden of stomach cancer that could be avoided from population-wide salt reduction in Vietnam. DESIGN: A dynamic simulation model was developed to quantify the impacts of achieving the 2018 National Vietnam Health Program (8 g/d by 2025 and 7 g/d by 2030) and the WHO (5 g/d) salt reduction policy targets. Data on salt consumption were obtained from the Vietnam 2015 WHO STEPS survey. Health outcomes were estimated over 6-year (2019-2025), 11-year (2019-2030) and lifetime horizons. We conducted one-way and probabilistic sensitivity analyses. SETTING: Vietnam. PARTICIPANTS: All adults aged ≥ 25 years (61 million people, 48·4 % men) alive in 2019. RESULTS: Achieving the 2025 and 2030 national salt targets could result in 3400 and 7200 fewer incident cases of stomach cancer, respectively, and avert 1900 and 4800 stomach cancer deaths, respectively. Achieving the WHO target by 2030 could prevent 8400 incident cases and 5900 deaths from stomach cancer. Over the lifespan, this translated to 344 660 (8 g/d), 411 060 (7 g/d) and 493 633 (5 g/d) health-adjusted life years gained, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: A sizeable burden of stomach cancer could be avoided, with gains in healthy life years if national and WHO salt targets were attained. Our findings provide impetus for policy makers in Vietnam and Asia to intensify salt reduction strategies to combat stomach cancer and mitigate pressure on the health systems.

BACKGROUND: Fatty acid-binding protein 3 (FABP3) is a cytosolic carrier protein of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and regulates cellular metabolism. However, the physiological functions of FABP3 in immune cells and how FABP3 regulates inflammatory responses remain unclear. METHODS: Contact hypersensitivity (CHS) induced by 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB) and fluorescein isothiocyanate was applied to the skin wild-type and Fabp3-/- mice. Skin inflammation was assessed using FACS, histological, and qPCR analyses. The development of γ/δ T cells was evaluated by a co-culture system with OP9/Dll1 cells in the presence or absence of transgene of FABP3. RESULTS: Fabp3-deficient mice exhibit a more severe phenotype of contact hypersensitivity (CHS) accompanied by infiltration of IL-17-producing Vγ4+ γ/δ T cells that critically control skin inflammation. In Fabp3-/- mice, we found a larger proportion of Vγ4+ γ/δ T cells in the skin, even though the percentage of total γ/δ T cells did not change at steady state. Similarly, juvenile Fabp3-/- mice also contained a higher amount of Vγ4+ γ/δ T cells not only in the skin but in the thymus when compared with wild-type mice. Furthermore, thymic double-negative (DN) cells expressed FABP3, and FABP3 negatively regulates the development of Vγ4+ γ/δ T cells in the thymus. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that FABP3 functions as a negative regulator of skin inflammation through limiting pathogenic Vγ4+ γ/δ T-cell generation in the thymus.

Group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) play critical roles in type 2 immunity and are crucial for pathogenesis of various types of inflammatory disease. IQ motif-containing GTPase-activating protein 1 (IQGAP1) is a ubiquitously expressed scaffold protein that is involved in multiple cellular functions such as cell survival and trafficking. While the roles for IQGAP1 in T and B lymphocytes have been uncovered, the physiological significance of IQGAP1 in innate lymphocytes remains to be elucidated. In the current study, we demonstrate that using bone marrow chimeras, the deficiency of IQGAP1 caused an impaired survival of lung ILC2s in a cell-intrinsic manner and that Iqgap1-/- mice displayed decreased accumulation of ILC2s after administration of papain and thereby reduced the pathology of the disease. Moreover, Iqgap1-/- ILC2s showed a significantly enhanced apoptosis as compared to wild-type ILC2s under both steady-state and inflammatory conditions. Together these results identify for the first time that IQGAP1 is essential for homeostasis of ILC2s in the lung.

Glucocorticoid-induced TNFR family related gene (GITR) is a member of the TNFR superfamily that is expressed on cells of the immune system. Although the protective and pathogenic roles of GITR in T cell immunity are well characterized, the role of GITR in innate immunity in the intestinal tissues has not been well clarified. In this study, using a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis model in mice, we found that GITR-deficiency rendered mice more susceptible to acute intestinal inflammation and that a significantly higher number of activated natural killer (NK) cells was accumulated in the colonic lamina propria of Gitr-/- mice as compared to wild-type mice. Additionally, Rag2-/- Gitr-/- mice, which lack T cells but have NK cells, also displayed more severe colonic inflammation than Rag2-/- mice. In contrast, an anti-GITR agonistic antibody significantly alleviated colitis in Rag2-/- mice. Engagement of GITR inhibited IL-15-mediated activating signaling events in NK cells, which include cell activation and proliferation, and production of cytokines and cytotoxic granules. Taken together, our results provide the first evidence that GITR negatively controls intestinal inflammation through NK cell functions.

Due to the depletion of fossil fuels, higher oil prices, and greenhouse gas emissions, the scientific community has been conducting an ongoing search for viable renewable alternatives to petroleum-based products, with the anticipation of increased adaptation in the coming years. New academic and industrial developments have encouraged the utilization of renewable resources for the development of ecofriendly and sustainable materials, and here, we focus on those advances that impact polyurethane (PU) materials. Vegetable oils, algae oils, and polysaccharides are included among the major renewable resources that have supported the development of sustainable PU precursors to date. Renewable feedstocks such as algae have the benefit of requiring only sunshine, carbon dioxide, and trace minerals to generate a sustainable biomass source, offering an improved carbon footprint to lessen environmental impacts. Incorporation of renewable content into commercially viable polymer materials, particularly PUs, has increasing and realistic potential. Biobased polyols can currently be purchased, and the potential to expand into new monomers offers exciting possibilities for new product development. This Review highlights the latest developments in PU chemistry from renewable raw materials, as well as the various biological precursors being employed in the synthesis of thermoset and thermoplastic PUs. We also provide an overview of literature reports that focus on biobased polyols and isocyanates, the two major precursors to PUs.

The physiological functions of TNF receptor-associated factor 5 (TRAF5) in the skin inflammation and wound healing process are not well characterized. We found that Traf5 -/- mice exhibited an accelerated skin wound healing as compared with wild-type counterparts. The augmented wound closure in Traf5 -/- mice was associated with a massive accumulation of plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) into skin wounds and an enhanced expression of genes related to wound repair at skin sites. In accordance with this result, adoptive transfer of Traf5 -/- pDCs, but not wild-type pDCs, into the injured skin area in wild-type recipient mice significantly promoted skin wound healing. The expression of skin-tropic chemokine receptor CXCR3 was significantly upregulated in Traf5-/- pDCs, and treatment with a CXCR3 inhibitor cancelled the promoted wound healing in Traf5-/- mice, suggesting a pivotal role of CXCR3 in pDC-dependent wound healing. Traf5 -/- pDCs displayed significantly higher expression of IFN regulatory factor 5 (IRF5), which correlated with greater induction of proinflammatory cytokine genes and CXCR3 protein after stimulation with TLR ligands. Consistently, transduction of exogeneous TRAF5 in Traf5-/- pDCs normalized the levels of abnormally elevated proinflammatory molecules, including IRF5 and CXCR3. Furthermore, knockdown of IRF5 also rescued the abnormal phenotypes of Traf5-/- pDCs. Therefore, the higher expression and induction of IRF5 in Traf5-/- pDCs causes proinflammatory and skin-tropic characteristics of the pDCs, which may accelerate skin wound healing responses. Collectively, our results uncover a novel role of TRAF5 in skin wound healing that is mediated by IRF5-dependent function of pDCs.

The conventional dendritic cells (cDCs) and plasmacytoid DCs (pDCs) originate from the same common dendritic cell precursor cells in the bone marrow. The pDCs produce large amounts of type 1 interferon in response to foreign nucleic acid and crucially contribute to host defense against viral infection. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptor-associated factor 5 (TRAF5) is a pivotal component of various TNF receptor signaling pathways in the immune system. Although the functions of TRAF5 in T and B lymphocytes have been well studied, its roles in pDCs remains to be fully elucidated. In this study, we show that the expression of TRAF5 supports the generation of pDCs in the bone marrow and also critically contributes to the homeostasis of the pDC subset in the periphery in a cell-intrinsic manner. Furthermore, we provide evidence that TRAF5 promotes the commitment of DC precursor cells toward pDC versus cDC subsets, which is regulated by the balance of transcription factors TCF4 and ID2. Together our findings reveal that TRAF5 acts as a positive regulator of pDC differentiation from bone marrow progenitors.

BACKGROUND: Timely restoration of bloodflow acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) reduces myocardial damage and improves prognosis. The objective of this study was describe the association of demographic factors with hospitalisation rates for STEMI and time to angiography, Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) and Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) in New South Wales (NSW) and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), Australia. METHODS: This was an observational cohort study using linked population health data. We used linked records of NSW and the ACT hospitalisations and the Australian Government Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) for persons aged 35 and over hospitalised with STEMI in the period 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2014. Survival analysis was used to determine the time between STEMI admission and angiography, PCI and CABG, with a competing risk of death without cardiac procedure. RESULTS: Of 13,117 STEMI hospitalisations, 71% were among males; 55% were 65-plus years; 64% lived in major cities, and 2.6% were Aboriginal people. STEMI hospitalisation occurred at a younger age in males than females. Angiography and PCI rates decreased with age: angiography 69% vs 42% and PCI 60% vs 34% on day 0 for ages 35-44 and 75-plus respectively. Lower angiography and PCI rates and higher CABG rates were observed outside major cities. Aboriginal people with STEMI were younger and more likely to live outside a major city. Angiography, PCI and CABG rates were similar for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people of the same age and remoteness area. CONCLUSIONS: There is a need to improve access to definitive revascularisation for STEMI among appropriately selected older patients and in regional areas. Aboriginal people with STEMI, as a population, are disproportionately affected by access to definitive revascularisation outside major cities. Improving access to timely definitive revascularisation in regional areas may assist in closing the gap in cardiovascular outcomes between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people.

BACKGROUND: Due to the high prevalence and adverse consequences, overweight and obesity in children continues to be a major public health concern worldwide. Socioeconomic background and health-related behaviours (such as diet, physical activity and sedentary behaviors) are important factors associated with weight status in children. Using a series of height and weight assessments from the Australian Capital Territory Physical Activity and Nutrition Survey (ACTPANS), trends in prevalence of overweight and obesity by socioeconomic status were examined in ACT Year 6 school children between 2006 and 2018. METHODS: The ACTPANS has been conducted every 3 years since 2006. A total of 6729 children were surveyed. Complete data on height and weight were available for 6384 (94.9%) participants. Trends in the prevalence of overweight and obesity and associations between weight status and risk factors (such as socioeconomic status, physical activity, screen time and consumption of sugar-sweetened soft drinks (SSD)) were examined using logistic regression. RESULTS: The prevalence of overweight and obesity remained stable in girls (from 22.5% in 2006 to 21.6% in 2018) but declined in boys (from 27.8 to 17.9%). During the same period, levels of physical activity increased slightly, while screen time and the consumption of fast food and SSD decreased. Socioeconomic gradient, based on the school-level Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage (ICSEA), was highly associated with prevalence of overweight and obesity. Since 2006, the estimated prevalence of overweight and obesity has remained high in the lowest SES groups, but a concurrent downward trend was observed in the highest SES group, leading to increasing disparity between SES groups. Children in the lowest ICSEA quintile were more likely to be overweight or obese compared to those in the moderate and highest ICSEA quintiles. Children in lower ICSEA quintiles also reported lower levels of physical activity, higher levels of screen time, and higher levels of fast food and SSD consumption compared to those in higher ICSEA quintiles. CONCLUSIONS: While recent trends in overweight and obesity in ACT children are encouraging, the prevalence remains unacceptably high, especially in those from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Additional prevention efforts are required to address the socioeconomic disparity.

AIMS: Maternal overweight and obesity in pregnancy are known to increase the risk of a range of complications and adverse pregnancy outcomes. This study estimates the population-level contribution of maternal overweight and obesity to adverse pregnancy outcomes. METHODS: Data derived from the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Maternal and Perinatal Data Collection were analysed. A total of 24 161 women who had a singleton birth in 2009-2015, with maternal weight and height information available, were included. In this study, the association between risk factors and outcomes was investigated using multilevel regression modelling. Based on model predictions under various hypothetical maternal weight scenarios, the number and proportion of adverse perinatal outcomes that could be potentially prevented were estimated. RESULTS: Maternal overweight and obesity were associated with increased risks of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), pre-eclampsia, caesarean delivery, preterm birth (PTB), large for gestational age (LGA) and admission to the special care nursery or neonatal intensive care unit (SCN/NICU). The estimated proportions of adverse pregnancy outcomes attributable to overweight and obesity in pregnancy are 29.3% for GDM, 36.2% for pre-eclampsia, 15.5% for caesarean delivery, 21.6% for longer antenatal stay in hospital (≥2 days), 16.3% for extreme PTB, 25.2% for LGA and 6.5% for SCN/NICU admission. CONCLUSIONS: Maternal overweight and obesity contribute to a large proportion of obstetric complications and adverse outcomes in the ACT. Effective intervention strategies to reduce the prevalence of overweight and obesity in pregnant women could have significant beneficial effects on pregnancy outcomes.

Oncostatin M (OSM) is involved in pathogenesis of several human inflammatory diseases including lung inflammation and fibrosis. Although accumulating evidence indicates that OSM mediates lung inflammation, the precise mechanism for OSM on lung inflammation still remains unclear. In this study, we found that OSM receptor was abundantly expressed on endothelial and stromal/fibroblast cells in the lung of mice. In vitro stimulation with OSM upregulated vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), which promotes eosinophil infiltration in the lung tissues, on freshly-isolated lung stromal/fibroblast cells from wild-type mice. However, these cells from TNF receptor associated factor 5 (TRAF5)-deficient mice failed to show the increase in VCAM-1 expression after OSM stimulation. Furthermore, Traf5-/- mice showed markedly attenuated lung inflammation in terms of eosinophil infiltration upon intranasal administration with OSM as compared to wild-type mice. These results indicate that TRAF5 is crucially involved in OSM-mediated lung inflammation probably by inducing lung stromal/fibroblast cell activation.

Control of the photoluminescence properties of cellulose is conducted by introduction of conducting polymers including fluorene (F) and 3-hexylthiophene (3HT) on cellulose surface through FeCl3 oxidative polymerization. The UV-vis absorption peak of cellulose grafted with the 3-hexylthiophene and fluorene copolymer was increasingly blue-shifted with increasing fluorene content and the shift in the peak position in photoluminescence spectra depend on the initial 3HT:F ratio of the copolymer. The crystallinity and thermal stability of cellulose decreased slightly upon graft polymerization with PF and P3HT, while the quantum yield, determined using absolute methods, increased from 3.1 to 9.7% with increasing fluorene content. The roles of the 3HT and F copolymers in improving the properties of cellulose were thoroughly studied by FT-IR, UV-vis, fluorescence, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric (TG), transmission electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray (TEM-EDX), and quantum yield measurements. Mechanistic insight into the grafting reaction is also provided.

The aims of the present study were to provide nationally representative data on fruit and vegetable consumption in Vietnam, and to assess the accuracy of the reported numbers of 'standard servings' consumed. Data analysed were from a multi-stage stratified cluster survey of 14 706 participants (46·5 % males, response proportion 64·1 %) aged 25-64 years in Vietnam. Measurements were made in accordance with the WHO STEPwise approach to surveillance of non-communicable diseases (STEPS) protocols. Approximately 80 % of Vietnamese people reported having less than five servings of fruit and vegetables daily in a typical week. Fruit and vegetable intake reported in 'standard serving' sizes was positively correlated with levels of education completed and household income (P<0·001 for trend). The correlations between summary values for each province reflect some known demographic, geographical and climatic characteristics of the country. For example, provinces at higher latitude had higher mean servings of vegetables (r 0·90), and provinces with higher proportions of urban population had higher mean servings of fruit (r 0·40). In conclusion, about eight in ten Vietnamese people aged 25-64 years did not meet WHO recommendations for daily consumption of at least five servings of fruit and vegetables. On the basis of the consistency of the data collected with other estimates and with physical and demographic characteristics of the country, the WHO STEPS instrument has construct validity for measuring fruit and vegetable intake, but with two issues identified. The issues were seasonal variation in reporting and a limitation on the usefulness of the information for associative analyses.

AIMS: To provide nationally representative data on alcohol consumption in Vietnam and to assess whether reported numbers of 'standard drinks' consumed have evidence of validity (particularly in rural areas where home-made alcohol is consumed from cups of varying size). METHODS: A nationally representative population-based survey of 14,706 participants (46.5% males, response proportion 64.1%) aged 25-64 years in Vietnam. Measurements were made in accordance with WHO STEPS protocols. Data were analysed using complex survey methods. RESULTS: Among men, 80% reported drinking alcohol during the last year, and 40% were hazardous/harmful drinkers. Approximately 60% of men and <5% of women had consumed alcohol during the last week, with one-in-four of the men reporting having consumed at least five standard drinks on at least one occasion. Numbers of standard drinks reported by men were associated with blood pressure/hypertension, particularly in rural areas (P < 0.001 for trend). Most of the calibration and discrimination possible from self-reported information on alcohol consumption was provided by binary responses to questions on whether or not alcohol had been consumed during the reference period. CONCLUSION: Alcohol use and harmful consumption were common among Vietnamese men but less pronounced than in Western nations. Self-reports of quantity of alcohol consumed in terms of standard drinks had predictive validity for blood pressure and hypertension even in rural areas. However, using detailed measures of consumption resulted in only minor improvements in prediction compared to simple measures.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes is a chronic medical condition and adherence to medication in diabetes is important. Improving medication adherence in adults with diabetes would help prevent the chronic complications associated with diabetes. A case control trial was used to study the effects of an educational session on medication adherence among adults with diabetes as measured by the Morisky Medication adherence scale (MMAS-8©). METHODS: The study took place at the Dubai Police Health Centre between February 2015 and November 2015. Questionnaires were used to collect socio-demographic, clinical and disease related variables and the primary measure of outcome was adherence levels as measured by the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8©). The intervention group involved a standardized thirty minute educational session focusing on the importance of adherence to medication. The change in MMAS-8© was measured at 6 months. RESULTS: Four hundred and forty six patients were enrolled. Mean age 61 year +/- 11. 48.4 % were male. The mean time since diagnosis of diabetes was 3.2 years (Range 1-15 years). At baseline two hundred and eighty eight (64.6 %) patients were considered non-adherent (MMAS-8© adherence score < 6) while 118 (26.5 %) and 40 (9.0 %) had low adherence (MMAS-8© adherence score < 6) and medium adherence (MMAS-8© adherence scores of 6 to 7) to their medication respectively. The percentage of patients scoring low adherence MMAS-8 scores in the interventional group dropped from 64.60 % at baseline to 44.80 % at 6-months (p = 0.01). There was no obvious change in the adherence scores at baseline and at 6-months in the control group. Based on the study data, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test showed that at 6 months, the educational 30-min session on diabetes and adherence to medication did elicit a statistically significant change in adherence levels in adults with diabetes enrolled in the intervention arm (Z = -6.187, p <0.001). CONCLUSION: Adults with diabetes would benefit from educational sessions focusing on the importance of adherence to medication. Public health strategies should focus on wider educational strategies targeting medication adherence in diabetic patients in the UAE.

BACKGROUND: To estimate the prevalence of non-communicable disease (NCD) risk factors at a provincial level in Vietnam, and to assess whether the summary estimates allow reliable inferences to be drawn regarding regional differences in risk factors and associations between them. METHODS: Participants (n = 14706, 53.5 % females) aged 25-64 years were selected by multi-stage stratified cluster sampling from eight provinces each representing one of the eight geographical regions of Vietnam. Measurements were made using the World Health Organization STEPS protocols. Data were analysed using complex survey methods. RESULTS: Differences by sex in mean years of schooling (males 8.26 ± 0.20, females 7.00 ± 0.18), proportions of current smokers (males 57.70 %, females 1.73 %), and binge-drinkers (males 25.11 %, females 0.63 %), and regional differences in diet, reflected the geographical and socio-cultural characteristics of the country. Provinces with a higher proportion of urban population had greater mean levels of BMI (r = 0.82), and lesser proportions of active people (r = -0.89). The associations between the summary estimates were generally plausible (e.g. physical activity and BMI, r = -0.80) but overstated, and with some anomalous findings due to characterisation of smoking and hypertension by STEPS protocols. CONCLUSIONS: This report provides an extensive description of the sex-specific and regional distribution of NCD risk factors in Vietnam and an account of some health-related consequences of industrialisation in its early stages. The STEPS protocols can be utilized to provide aggregate data for valid between-population comparisons, but with important caveats identified.
