RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Workplace violence remains a significant threat to the United States health care workforce. With increasingly aggressive patients, emergency nurses reported that the increased prevalence of workplace violence impacted their professional and personal lives. METHODS: This study employed a qualitative, descriptive phenomenological approach with purposive sampling. Participants were asked to describe their lived experience with workplace violence while working as emergency nurses and how this affected them personally and professionally. RESULTS: Eleven experienced emergency registered nurses from 3 mid-Atlantic hospitals participated in the study. After reviewing, clustering, and validating significant statements, 4 major themes were identified: walking wounded to wounded healer, unexpected shock, betrayal, and resilient but changed. DISCUSSION: Our findings were consistent with other studies exploring the effects of workplace violence in emergency departments. We validated that trauma has long-lasting effects. Organizations should ensure that programs and processes are in place to support the nurse or health care worker when workplace violence events occur.

RESUMO

Automated methods exist for double staining bone and cartilage in fetal rat, rabbit and mice using alizarin red S and Alcian blue. None of the published methods produce consistently stained bone and cartilage in mouse fetuses. Consequently, we modified an automated staining method for use with mouse fetuses. Methanol replaced 95% industrial denatured alcohol, and 5% glacial acetic acid was used instead of 20%. We describe here our new protocol, which has been used successfully to stain specimens for regulatory prenatal developmental toxicity studies.

RESUMO

Although the very best orientation will not fully eliminate new graduates' sense of anxiety, a successful orientation will guide the novice registered nurse to use these feelings constructively by promoting a sense of confidence, competence, and satisfaction. This article provides details and examples of how progress meetings can be a beneficial addition to an orientation template. Progress meetings offer an avenue to facilitate social support and clinical growth supporting the transition from new graduate nurse to independent staff nurse.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study examined concurrent validity of the Evaluation Tool of Children's Handwriting-Cursive (ETCH-C) by comparing ETCH-C total legibility percentage scores with handwriting grades from teachers. The study also identified the legibility percentage score discriminating between satisfactory and unsatisfactory handwriting. METHOD: The participants were 101 fourth graders who completed two handwriting instruments. Three teachers sorted the Cursive Practice and Review work sheets into A, B, C, and unsatisfactory groups to establish handwriting grade. The study compared ETCH-C total legibility percentage scores with teacher grading, using personal judgment of handwriting on the Cursive Practice and Review work sheet. RESULTS: Mean legibility percentage scores increased significantly as handwriting grade increased. The concurrent validity coefficients were .61 for ETCH-C total words and .65 for ETCH-C total letters and handwriting grade. ETCH-C legibility percentage scores discriminating satisfactory from unsatisfactory handwriting ranged from 73% to 82% on ROC (receiver operating characteristic) curves. CONCLUSION: Results support the concurrent validity of the ETCH-C with handwriting grades. A 75% word legibility percentage score discriminated satisfactory and unsatisfactory handwriting.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this research was to study how the speed and legibility of fourth-graders handwriting was affected by type of pencil grip on the Evaluation Tool of Children's Handwriting-Cursive. METHOD: Ninety-five typically developing students and 6 students receiving special education services completed the Evaluation Tool of Children's Handwriting-Cursive (ETCH-C). Photographs were taken of their pencil grips while they wrote the alphabet. One-way ANOVAs were calculated to compare legibility rates and writing speeds by type of pencil grip. RESULTS: Ninety-nine of the students used one of four pencil grips including the dynamic tripod (38 students), the dynamic quadrupod (18), the lateral tripod (22), and the lateral quadrupod (21). One student used the four-finger pencil grip and one used the interdigital pencil grip. Mean cursive writing speeds were similar for all pencil grips except for the interdigital grasp. Speeds obtained were slower than recently published fourth-grade speeds ranging from a mean of 29.45 to 34.75 letters per minute. CONCLUSION. This study found the lateral quadrupod and four-finger pencil grips to be as functional as the dynamic tripod, lateral tripod, and dynamic quadrupod pencil grips. This study provides average handwriting speeds for fourth-grade students on the ETCH-C.

RESUMO

In May 2004, two groundwater wells in Dinwiddie County, Virginia were found to have natural uranium levels either at or above the EPA recommended limit of 30 microg/l. As a result, a stop drinking water advisory was issued until a water treatment system could be installed to remove the uranium. In response to residents' concerns, and uncertainty of exposures, affected individuals were asked to participate in a voluntary epidemiological investigation of uranium uptake and 1-year uranium retention study. This study had two primary objectives: quantification of the uranium load on the participants, as expressed by their urine uranium concentration, and retention after 1 year of no exposure. A first-morning void urine specimen, along with survey information, was collected from 156 participants in May 2004, with a second collection occurring 12 months later of 91 participants. The samples were analyzed for uranium by ICP/MS, pH, creatinine by the Jaffe method, and RBP by LIA after both collections. A reduction of one order of magnitude for the geometric mean urine uranium concentration was observed, from 0.100 microg/g creatinine to 0.011 microg/g creatinine in 1 year. Comparatively, NHANES has reported that the geometric mean for all participants, ages 6 years and older, is 0.008 microg/g creatinine, with the 95th percentile being 0.040 microg/g creatinine. None of the second round specimens showed a urine uranium concentration higher than baseline for an individual.

RESUMO

The current workers' compensation system does not encourage permanently restricted workers who are disabled due to work related injuries to return to work. Workers are often labeled permanently disabled and are released from their positions with their employers. However, according to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, these individuals may be qualified to return to productive employment. This paper will describe a Reassignment Model for occupational therapy supported by the rehabilitation frame of reference. This Model presents reassignment to a vacant position as a reasonable accommodation to return injured workers to productive employment. A case study will illustrate the successful implementation of the model. The potential benefits of using this Model will be described for clients, society, employers, and the occupational therapy profession.
