RESUMO

We report on two brothers with adult polycystic kidney disease, malignant teratomas and other genital malformations. Because of the unusual accumulation of malformations of embryologically related organs, we postulate a connection between malformations of the kidneys and the genital tract, on the one hand, and teratomas on the other. No genetic coherence is known so far. It is unlikely that immunosuppression with cyclosporin after transplantation had caused these tumours.

RESUMO

The case of a male patient operated for a leiomyoma of the jejunum is presented. The clinical symptoms, the morphological differential diagnosis and the problems evaluating aggressiveness of this tumour are discussed. We intend to demonstrate that histopathological diagnostic implicate a certain grade of uncertainty too. With the example of leiomyoma we like to show that diagnosis means a tight cooperation of the clinician and his pathologist by collecting clinical and histomorphological data.

RESUMO

Conservation treatment was applied to 406 patients in Basel, between 1977 and 1986, who accounted for 25% of all cases of mammary carcinoma. Patients with favourable prognostic factors had been selected for this therapeutic approach. The primary tumor bed was re-excised in about 50% of all operations. Intramammary recurrences were recorded from 9% of all cases, through an average follow-up period of 53 months. Presence of carcinoma residues in re-excised specimens was an important risk factor for development of locally delimited recurrence. Additional risks were relating to presence of tumor residues in final excision margins as well as to invasive lobular carcinoma. No combination of histopathological risk factors has so far become known as an absolute contraindication to conservation treatment of mammary carcinoma.

RESUMO

A report is made on a pregnancy of a 33-year old II-gravida/I-para patient, terminating with the rupture of the uterus bicornis unicollis in the 18th week of pregnancy. The cause of this rupture was believed to be pathological disturbance of the attachment of the placenta. The early detection of uterine anomalies with ultrasonic investigation, reviewing the literature, is discussed.

RESUMO

Studies on the endometrial cycle depend upon the precise dating of the cycle stage. In the present paper the generally applied method of vaginal smear was carefully verified through the measurement of the hormones relevant to the endometrial cycle. From rats predated through vaginal smear cytology, the hormone levels of estradiol-17-beta (E2) and progesterone (P), luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) were measured. The values obtained were then compared to the standardized values of our reference curve. Animals with values that did not fit within the standard deviation of our reference curve were excluded from this investigation. Thus, for the first time exactly dated rat endometrial morphology was studied with electron microscopy. The morphology of the surface epithelium of rat endometrium from all four stages of the cycle is described in detail. In addition a semiquantitative morphometric analysis of the following parameters was performed: cell volume, nuclear volume, the volume density of secretory granules, digestive vacuoles, mitochondria, Golgi apparatus, rough endoplasmic reticulum, and lipid vacuoles as well as the size of lipid vacuoles. With the cellular content of lipid vacuoles and their diameter, it is possible to differentiate between proestrus/estrus and diestrus I/diestrus II, the latter possessing definitely more and larger lipid vacuoles. During estrus the greatest cytoplasmic volume develops. In addition to this, secretory granules are only present during estrus. Finally, diestrus I can be well differentiated from diestrus II, because diestrus I exhibits more digestive vacuoles and during diestrus II a high percentage of free ribosomes is present. On the basis of distinct morphological features, described in this paper, it is now clearly possible to distinguish between the four different cycle stages.

RESUMO

Isolated primary tumors of the lung are rarely seen in childhood and are benign in one third of the patients. Plasma cell granulomas represent the most common benign tumor of the lung in this age group. Histologically, the tumor is characterized by the various components of a chronic inflammation or granulation tissue. Frozen sections can pose difficulties in the differentiation between a malignant and benign process. In view of the case history of our patient we set out to demonstrate that a knowledge of the clinical picture and a correct interpretation of associated laboratory findings facilitate diagnosis. To our knowledge we describe for the first time the ultrastructural findings of so-called "microtubule-reticular structures" giving further evidence of the inflammatory origin of this lesion.
