Aerobiological studies are still scarce in northwestern Mexico where allergenic pollen have great impacts on health. Current global pollution and climate change problems are closely related to many allergic diseases, enhancing the need to continue researching these issues and improve life quality. This study provides the first Pollen Calendar for Hermosillo, Sonora, México. Airborne pollen were continuously collected for 5 years (2015-2019). The standardized methodology with a Hirst-type spore trap proposed for global aerobiological studies was used. Weather data were also taken from a station located in the city and used to explore correlations between climate and airborne pollen concentrations in different seasons. The most important pollen taxa recorded in air belongs to herbaceous pollen, such as Poaceae, Ambrosia, Asteraceae, Chenopodiaceae-Amaranthaceae, and some shrub trees typical of this arid region, such as Nyctaginaceae, Prosopis, Parkinsonia, and Fabaceae. The most critical herbaceous pollen related to allergies have a long mean pollen season throughout the years, and the most critical periods with high pollen concentration in air occur in two seasons, spring (March-April) and summer-fall (August-October). In these 5 years, the correlation analyses for these two peaks indicate that a link exists between pollen in the air and decreases in precipitation and temperatures, and an increase in relative humidity. An inter-annual variability in pollen concentrations was recorded related to different weather conditions. Although pollen calendars are location-specific, they are useful for future research on biological air quality scenarios in different cities. Using this standardized method for other regions can provide pollen calendars that have been proven clinically important in allergic disease management worldwide.

Listeria monocytogenes is an opportunistic pathogen with the ability to adapt to different environmental conditions, resulting in safety issues for food producers. Foods contaminated by L. monocytogenes can represent a risk if consumed by susceptible individuals such as elderly, pregnant women and the immunocompromised. The aim of this study was to evaluate the genetic diversity of a collection of L. monocytogenes isolated from different matrices in Brazil during the period of 1979-2015. A total of 51 L. monocytogenes serotype 1/2a strains isolated from clinical samples (n = 3) and food samples (n = 48) were characterized by Multi-Virulence-Locus Sequence Typing (MVLST). The strains were assigned to nine virulence types (VT): VT-11 (n = 3, 5·9%), VT-45 (n = 27, 52·9%), VT-59 (n = 11, 21·6%), VT-68 (n = 3, 5·9%), VT-94 (n = 2, 3·9%), VT-107 (n = 2, 3·9%), VT-184 (n = 1, 1·9%), VT-185 (n = 1, 1·9%) and VT-186 (n = 1, 1·9%); and four of them (VT-11, VT-45, VT-59 and VT-68) have already been associated with cases of listeriosis worldwide. The VT-11, VT-59 (Epidemic Clone V) and VT-186 were identified in blood culture samples, as well as in different classes of foods. It is recommended that the epidemiological surveillance agencies evaluate the risk that foods contaminated with L. monocytogenes VTs pose to susceptible populations.

Studies focused on the seasonal distribution of pollen and spores in semiarid cities are scarce. At these sites, climate change potentiates the emission and transport of fine (PM10) to ultrafine particles (PM2.5), easily attached to pollen surfaces, causing allergen's release. This study examines the potential correlation of seasonal variations of pollen, fungal spores, PM10, and meteorological parameters with allergic reactions of 150 people living in a Sonoran desert city. We collected PM10, airborne pollen, and spores during a year. We also studied topsoil and road dust samples as potential PM-emission sources. We obtained dust-mineralogy, chemistry, and particle size attached to pollen by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope. Results show that seasonal high PM-loading in the urban atmosphere coincides with aeroallergens promoting micro- to nanoparticles' attachment to pollen's surface. A collapsed membrane was observed in several samples after individual grains show the following maximum wall coverage: Poaceae 28%, Asteraceae 40%, Chenopodiaceae-Amaranthacea 29%, Fabaceae 18%. Most of the particles covering pollen's surface have a geogenic origin mixed with metals linked to traffic (bromide, chlorine, and antimony). Mineralogical, granulometric analysis, and main wind-direction show that two local soil-types are the main contributors to PM. A high frequency of positive sensitization to pollen with high particle loading was detected. These results suggest that climate-driven dust emissions may alter pollen and spore surfaces' physicochemical characteristics with the further consequences in their allergenic potential.

Cronobacter infections of infants are commonly regarded as due to the ingestion of contaminated feed. The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of Cronobacter, total coliforms and Escherichia coli in different brands of natural mineral waters as sold in 20 l returnable bottles in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The quantification of total coliforms and E. coli was performed by Most Probable Number. The detection of Cronobacter was as according to the ISO 22964:2017 and Bacteriological Analytical Manual/FDA. Molecular characterization of Cronobacter isolates was performed by real-time PCR and by multi-locus sequence typing. The antibiotic susceptibility profile was determined and biofilm production was evaluated in polystyrene microplates. Total coliforms and E. coli were detected in 13 (39·4%) and 2 (6·1%) of the 33 lots analysed respectively, and were considered unsatisfactory for human consumption according to Brazilian law. One (3·0%) lot showed contamination by C. malonaticus ST440 (Cronobacter MLST Databases accession no. ID 2646). The strain was susceptible to all (n = 13) antibiotics tested and only formed a weak biofilm. Since there is a high consumption of natural mineral waters by elderly and immunosuppressed persons, epidemiological surveillance agencies should be aware of the risk that these waters may represent for these groups. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Cronobacter malonaticus ST440 was isolated from 20 l bottled drinking natural mineral waters sold in markets in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, and can be a potential threat to human health, particularly for neonates. Thirteen lots (39·4%) were unsatisfactory for human consumption due to the presence of total coliforms and/or Escherichia coli.

The physiological and behavioural responses of ectotherms to temperature is strongly dependent on the individuals' previous thermal history. Laboratory based studies investigating the mechanisms of thermoregulation in marine ectotherms, however, rarely consider key temporal elements of thermal exposure, such as the rate at which temperature changes. We tested the hypothesis that juvenile seahorses, Hippocampus erectus, from a tropical coastal lagoon in Yucatan, Mexico, would exhibit variations in physiological and behavioural descriptors of thermoregulation when submitted to contrasting regimes during 30 days: temperature constant at 25 °C (C 25); gradually increasing 1 °C every 5 days from 25 to 30 °C (GI 25-30); and constant at 30 °C (C 30). Immediately after exposure, critical maximum temperature, thermal preference, oxygen consumption, partial energy balance, growth rate and survival of seahorses were measured. Seahorses exposed to GI 25-30 showed a significantly higher critical thermal maxima (37.8 ±â€¯0.9 °C), preference (28.7 ±â€¯0.4 °C), growth (1.10 ±â€¯0.49%) and survival (97.6%) than those exposed to C 30 (36.5 ±â€¯1, 29.4 ±â€¯0.3 °C, 0.48 ±â€¯0.32%, 73.8%, respectively). Both high temperature regimes induced metabolic depression, but ramping resulted in a greater amount of energy assimilated (278.9 ±â€¯175.4 J g-1 day-1) and higher energy efficiency for growth (89.8%) than constant exposure to 30 °C (115.4 ±â€¯63.4 J g-1 day-1, 65.3%, respectively). Gradually increasing temperature allowed physiological mechanisms of thermal adjustment to take place, reflecting the capacity of juvenile H. erectus to respond to environmental change. Despite its advantage, this capacity is limited in time, since the cumulative effect of thermal exposure affected metabolic performance, eventually compromising survival. The study of seahorse response to thermal variations in the context of ocean warming needs to consider the temporal elements of thermal exposure to foresee its vulnerability under future scenarios.

In the present work, growth and digestive enzyme activities of total acid and alkaline proteases, pepsin, trypsin, lipase, and α-amylase, as well as partial characterization of enzyme activity, were studied in diploid and triploid turbot. Growth was similar between both groups. Acid protease activity increased consistently during the experiment, for both diploid (2n) and triploid (3n) fish. The alkaline protease activity was always higher for triploids throughout the experiment. Proteolytic acid activity (pH 2) was generally higher for diploids, at all temperatures tested. Higher activity was at pH 2 and 3 for 2n and 3n fish, respectively. Regarding temperature, acid and alkaline protease activity was higher at 37 °C and 60 °C, respectively, for both groups. The general increase in pancreatic enzymes (trypsin and amylase) before 35 days after hatching (DAH) and posterior decrease until 60 DAH. There was a marked effect on enzyme activity when changing from live prey to pellets (35 DAH), especially on triploids.

In this Letter, we investigate the nonlinear effects of extremely intense few-cycle terahertz (THz) pulses (generated from the organic crystal 4-NN, NN-dimethylamino-4'4'-N'N'-methyl-stilbazolium 2, 4, 6 trimethylbenzenesulfonate, with peak electrical fields of a few MV/cm) on the carrier dynamics in n-doped semiconductor thin film In0.53Ga0.47As. By performing open-aperture Z-scan measurements and recording the transmitted THz energy through semiconductor sample, we observed a strong THz absorption bleaching effect at high fields, followed by an absorption enhancement at even higher fields. We attribute our observations to a crossover from pure intraband carrier dynamics to an interplay between intraband carrier heating and interband carrier generations.

AIM: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that has manifestations other than alterations in endocrine regulation or in metabolic pathways. Several diseases of the oral cavity have been associated with diabetes mellitus type 1 and 2 in young people according to their evolution. Scarce information exists regarding the role of diabetes and its association with the oral health status in paediatric diabetic patients. The aims of the study were to assess the quality of saliva, saliva acidogenicity, dental caries experience, fluorosis and periodontal status in diabetic patients and to evaluate their relationship with metabolic control variables and nutritional plan adherence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study population consisted of 60 paediatric patients with both types of diabetes mellitus. Saliva testing included stimulated flow, pH (using pH indicator strips), buffer capacity and Snyder's Test. DMFT/dmft and dental caries experience were determined on the basis of ICDAS II codes. The periodontal status was assessed by PI and GI and fluorosis by FI. Nutritional plan adherence was established from the subscale "Dietary Control" of the Diabetes Self-Management Profile questionnaire. Medical Data was retrieved from the clinical registers in the Diabetic Clinic. RESULTS: We describe the main characteristics of the oral cavity related variables of our population that might guide the clinical practice in similar settings; we found a dmft/DMFT of 1.71 ± 1.74 and 0.64 ± 1.03, PI of 1.91 ± 0.75, GI of 0.50 ± 0.56 and a fluorosis prevalence of 61%. We identified several correlated variables, which indicate strong associations between the nutritional habits of the patients and co-occurrence of oral cavity physiopathological alterations. Several correlations were found between acidogenic activity of the saliva (Snyder Test) and the percentage of adherence to the nutritional plan and to the dmft index. Furthermore, a significant correlation between the buffering capacity of the saliva and the glycemic control of the participants was found. Neither an association nor a difference among means was found between treatment regime and the plaque index. CONCLUSION: The results of the present study concluded that there was a significant relationship between diabetes mellitus and an increased prevalence of oral cavity related diseases in the paediatric population. These are also associated with a poor adherence to the nutritional plan.

BACKGROUND: In relation to the number of new cases diagnosed, gastric cancer is the fourth most common cancer worldwide, and the second cause of cancer death. The development of multidetector tomography has improved the preoperative staging of gastric cancer. AIM: To correlate preoperative tomographic studies with the definitive pathologic results according to the TNM staging system. METHODS: A retrospective, cross-sectional study within the time frame of January 2009 to December 2013 was conducted that included the case records of 67 patients. They all had upper endoscopy and preoperative multidetector tomography examinations, underwent surgical resection, and had the corresponding histopathology study. Statistical analysis was carried out with the SPSS version 15.0 software and the sensitivity and specificity calculations were made using the Excel 2011 program for Mac. RESULTS: The majority of the patients included in the case series had clinical stage iii and iv disease. When compared with the histopathologic result, the overall accuracy of multidetector CT was 83% (T0 96%, T1 94%, T2 93%, T3 67%, and T4 67%) for tumor size (T) and was 70% (N0 72%, N1 73%, N2 70%, and N3 66%) for lymph node involvement (N). Overall sensitivity was 48% (T0 100%, T1 0%, T2 33%, T3 44%, and T4 65%) for T and was 41% (N0 58%, N1 56%, N2 15%, and N3 35%) for N. A strong association between the multidetector CT results and the pathology results was demonstrated through the Spearman's correlation, especially in T4 and N3. CONCLUSIONS: Multidetector computed tomography showed greater congruency in detecting stages T4, N0, and N3 in gastric cancer, when compared with the definitive histopathologic results.

Hyperandrogenemia, hyperinsulinemia, and obesity affect 60-70% of patients with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), who exhibit an altered endometrial insulin signaling. The aim of the study was to evaluate whether hyperandrogenism, hyperinsulinism, and obesity present in PCOS patients impair the endometrial adiponectin signaling pathway. The ex vivo study was conducted on 27 samples from lean (n=9), obese (n=9), and obese-PCOS (n=9) patients. The in vitro assays were performed in immortalized human endometrial stromal cells stimulated with testosterone, insulin, or testosterone plus insulin. Serum steroid-hormones, adiponectin, glucose, and insulin; body mass index, free androgen index, ISI-Composite, and HOMA were evaluated in the 3 groups. Ex vivo and in vitro gene expression and protein content of adiponectin, AdipoR1, AdipoR2, and APPL1 were determined. Adiponectin serum levels were decreased in obese-PCOS patients compared to lean (78%) and obese (54%) controls (p<0.05). AdipoR1 protein and gene expression were increased in obese group vs. obese-PCOS and lean groups (2-fold, p<0.05). In turn, AdipoR2 protein and mRNA content was similar between the 3 groups. APPL1 protein levels were reduced in endometria from both obese groups, compared to lean group (6-fold, p<0.05). Testosterone plus insulin stimulation of T-HESC and St-T1b leads to a reduction of adiponectin, AdipoR1, AdipoR2, and APPL1 protein content in both endometrial cell lines (p<0.05), whereas, in the presence of testosterone or insulin alone, protein levels were similar to basal. Therefore, endometrial adiponectin-signaling pathway is impaired in hyperandrogenemic and hyperinsulinemic obese-PCOS patients, corroborated in the in vitro model, which could affect endometrial function and potentially the implantation process.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune enteropathy that develops in genetically susceptible individuals. The typical gastrointestinal manifestation is diarrhea but symptoms of dyspepsia, such as epigastric pain, nausea, or satiety, can sometimes appear. Previous studies have reported that the prevalence of CD in patients with dyspepsia can be as high as 7%. The aim of the present study was to evaluate CD seroprevalence in subjects with dyspeptic symptoms and a control group in a Mexican population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A case-control study was conducted on blood donors that answered the PAGI-SYM questionnaire for dyspepsia and in whom IgA antibodies to tissue transglutaminase 2 (IgA anti-tTG2) and IgG antibodies to deamidated gliadin peptide (IgG anti-DGP) were determined. CD seroprevalence in subjects with dyspeptic symptoms and in asymptomatic subjects was compared. RESULTS: A total of 427 subjects (76.3% men), with a mean patient age of 34 years (range of 18-65 years) were included. Of those participants, 87 (20.3%) had symptoms of dyspepsia (group A) and 340 (79.6%) were asymptomatic (group B). Antibodies were positive in one (1.15%) of the group A subjects (1/87, 95% CI 0.2-6 %), whereas they were positive in 4 (1.18%) of the group B subjects (4/340, 95% CI 0.4-2.9%, p = 0.59). CONCLUSIONS: CD seroprevalence in the study population with dyspeptic symptoms (1%) was not different from that of the control population. Thus, CD screening in Mexican patients with dyspepsia is not justified.

Hippocampus erectus inhabiting the shallow coastal waters of the southern Gulf of Mexico are naturally exposed to marked temperature variations occurring in different temporal scales. Under such heterogeneous conditions, a series of physiological and biochemical adjustments take place to restore and maintain homeostasis. This study investigated the molecular mechanisms involved in the response of H. erectus to increased temperature using transcriptome analysis based on RNA-Seq technology. Data was obtained from seahorses after 0.5-h exposure to combinations of different target temperatures (26 °C: control, and increased to 30 and 33 °C) and rates of thermal increase (abrupt: < 5 min; gradual: 1-1.5 °C every 3 h). The transcriptome of seahorses was assembled de novo using Trinity software to obtain 29,211 genes and 30,479 transcripts comprising 27,520,965 assembled bases. Seahorse exposure to both 30 and 33 °C triggered characteristic processes of the cellular stress response, regardless of the rate of thermal change. The transcriptomic profiles of H. erectus suggest an arrest of muscle development processes, the activation of heat shock proteins, and a switch to anaerobic metabolism within the first 0.5 h of exposure to target temperatures to ensure energy supply. Interestingly, apoptotic processes involving caspase were activated principally in gradual treatments, suggesting that prolonged exposure to even sublethal temperatures results in the accumulation of deleterious effects that may eventually terminate in cellular death. Results herein validate 30 °C and 33 °C as potential upper limits of thermal tolerance for H. erectus at the southernmost boundary of its geographic distribution.

Although, the Yaqui and Mayo valleys are the most important agricultural areas in Sonora, there is only limited data of the pesticides residue in soils in these valleys. This study measured the organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in 234 soil samples (residential and agricultural) from 24 communities. The global results (mean, range) indicated that benzene hexachloride (19.2, ND-938.5 µg g(-1)), endrin (6.6, ND-377.3 µg g(-1)) and DDTs (36.45, ND-679.7 µg g(-1)) were the dominant contaminants. Soil is one of the most important routes of exposure to OCPs in the population of southern Sonora and this study can be used to establish background levels of OCPs.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine-metabolic disorder highly associated with insulin resistance and compensatory hyperinsulinemia. It is known that the insulin signaling pathway is impaired in endometria from PCOS hyperinsulinemic women, but no information is available about molecules associated with cell surface GLUT4 translocation. We therefore evaluated the protein levels of AS160 target molecules, Rab8A and Rab10, and the WAVE family proteins involved in the cortical-actin remodeling, Neural Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome Protein (N-WASP) and WASP, in endometria from hyperinsulinemic PCOS women and controls. METHODS: Protein levels were assessed by western blot, immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence in proliferative (PE = 7) and secretory (SE = 7) phase endometria from control women and in endometria from hyperinsulinemic PCOS women (PCOS h-INS = 7). RESULTS: Similar levels were detected for Rab10 in the three studied groups; however, Rab8A levels decreased in SE (P < 0.05) while higher levels were obtained in PCOSE h-INS compared with PE (P < 0.05). In the normal menstrual cycle, Neural Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein (N-WASP) and WASP levels were increased in SE versus PE (P < 0.05), but in PCOSE h-INS, the levels were diminished compared with PE (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: SE is characterized by protein expression changes associated with glucose uptake. In endometria from PCOS women with hyperinsulinemia, reduced levels of WAVE family proteins could compromise the cell surface GLUT4 exposure and the consequent glucose uptake in this tissue.

This study aimed to evaluate viral and bacterial contamination from typical Brazilian cheeses, such as Minas (fresh) and Prato (ripened), commercially obtained in the Greater Metropolitan Region of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Minas [30], Prato [30] and sliced Prato [30] cheese samples were investigated for norovirus genogroup I and II (NoV GI-II) and human adenovirus (HAdV) by direct nucleic acid extraction using TRIzol and amplification by TaqMan based quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella spp., coagulase-positive staphylococci (CPS) and fecal coliforms were also assessed by using standard counting methods. NoV GI and GII were detected in one sample (1.1%) each and HAdV in nine samples (10.0%) while bacteriological analysis revealed five samples (5.5%) contaminated with L. monocytogenes, 27 (30.0%) with fecal coliforms and 10 (11.1%) with CPS. Salmonella spp. was not detected in any sample. Viruses were detected in 11 samples (12.2%), of which 9 met the microbiological criteria used to evaluate the microbiological quality of the cheeses, stressing the importance of considering virological parameters for monitoring this food matrix.

BACKGROUND: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease may suffer one or more extraintestinal manifestations during the course of their condition, these being more frequent in Crohn s disease. The aim of our study was to evaluate the prevalence of extraintestinal manifestations in patients with Crohn s disease in our healthcare area, and to assess the relationship between its presence and diverse clinical-evolutionary variables. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Extraintestinal manifestations in 157 patients diagnosed with Crohn s disease in our center were retrospectively studied. The clinical-evolutionary characteristics of this population were compared with respect to the presence or absence of different extraintestinal manifestations. RESULTS: Seventy-two patients (46%) presented at least with one extraintestinal manifestation. Thirty-one percent were colitis-related manifestations (22% rheumatologic, 13% muco-cutaneous, 4% ophthalmologic), 11% cholelithiasis, 8% nephrolithiasis, 3% thromboembolic illness, and other manifestations were less frequent. Fourteen percent presented with more than one extraintestinal manifestation. Rheumatologic and muco-cutaneous manifestations were significantly more frequent in patients with disease confined to the colon. Cholelithiasis was significantly associated to those over 40 and also to males. Nephrolithiasis was also significantly associated to those over 40, and thromboembolic illness was linked to females. CONCLUSIONS: forty-six percent of patients with Crohn s disease presented at least with one extraintestinal manifestation. Thirty-one percent presented with colitis-related manifestations, rheumatologic and muco-cutaneous manifestations being the most frequent, whereas hepatic manifestations were infrequent. Rheumatologic and muco-cutaneous manifestations were more frequent in patients with disease confined to the colon.

Coccidioidomycosis is a mycosis firstly pulmonar caused by Coccidioides immitis; it can be disseminated to central nervous system, bones and skin, principaly. In Mexico, the real frequency of the disease is unknown. The aim of this work was to determine, by skin test and by serology, the infection cases by C. immitis in twelve communities (10 rural and two urban), attended in the Hospital Rural No 79 at the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) from the Coahuila State, Mexico. Six hundred and sixty eight adult individuals of both sexes were studied, to whom 0.1 ml of coccidioidin by intradermal route was applied; 72 h after, the induration diameter was measured. One hundred eighty individuals were selected and seric anti-C. immitis immunoglobulins levels were determined by ELISA. Six hundred twenty one individuals (93%) were positive to coccidioidin, the frequency was much higher than that previously reported in Coahuila. From 180 sera studied, the means of optical density (OD) were: IgG1, 1.55; IgG2, 0.94; total IgG, 0.33; IgG3, 0.29; IgG4, 0.27; IgM, 0.08. The values of IgG1, IgG2 and IgM compared with the other immunoglobulins were statistically significant. The high values of IgG1 and IgG2 suggest frequent contact with the antigen, and probable cases of undiagnosed disease.

La proteína chaperona Calreticulina (CRT), ha sido identificada en retículo endoplásmico (RE) y últimamente en la matriz extracelular (MEC) de predentina y arterias, atribuyéndole diferentes funciones extracelulares entre las que destacan la adhesión celular, regulación de la MEC y prevención en la formación de trombos. El objetivo del estudio fue identificar la presencia de CRT en MEC de vena safena parva. Se extrajo una muestra de vena safena parva de un espécimen masculino y luego fue procesada por medios histológicos e inmunohistoquímicos para identificar su presencia. Mediante técnicas de inmunohistoquímica se pudo evidenciar la presencia de CRT en la MEC de la adventicia de vena safena parva. La presencia de CRT en MEC de safena parva orienta a que CRT tienen funciones de tipo extracelular en esta localización, pero es necesario realizar estudios más precisos para dilucidar sus principales funciones en la zona.


Calreticulin (CRT) protein, has been identified in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and lately in the extracellular matrix (ECM) of predentine and arteries. It is responsible for different extracellular functions, such as cell adhesion, ECM regulation, and the prevention of thrombosis. The aim was to identify the presence of CRT in ECM of small saphenous vein. A sample of small saphenous vein from a male specimen was extracted and then processed by histological and immunohistochemical assays to identify its presence. The presence of CRT in the ECM of the small saphenous vein was observed by immunohistochemical techniques. The presence of CRT in the small saphenous vein ECM, indicates that CRT have extracellular functions in this area, however, more precise studies are necessary to determine its main functions.
