RESUMO

A Watt-level continuous and single frequency blue laser at 461 nm is obtained by frequency-doubling an amplified diode laser operating at 922 nm via a LBO crystal in a resonant Fabry-Pérot cavity. We achieved a best optical conversion efficiency equal to 87% with more than 1 W output power in the blue, and limited by the available input power. The frequency-converted beam is characterized in terms of long term power stability, residual intensity noise, and geometrical shape. The blue beam has a linewidth of the order of 1 MHz, and we used it to magneto-optically trap 88Sr atoms on the 5s2 1S0 - 5s5p 1P1 transition. The low-finesse, linear-cavity doubling system is very robust, maintains the lock for several days, and is compatible with a tenfold increase of the power levels which could be obtained with fully-fibered amplifiers and large mode area fibers.

RESUMO

We realize a 1 W all-fibered polarized compact and robust laser source at 852 nm for laser cooling of cesium atoms. The architecture is based on the sum-frequency generation of 1540 and 1908 nm lasers, realized through a periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide with a conversion efficiency of 40%. A linewidth of 20 kHz is achieved with the development of a distributed feedback fiber laser at 1908 nm. The operation of this laser source is demonstrated on a focused ion beam (FIB) experiment based on cold cesium atoms.

RESUMO

We have developed a watt-level random laser at 532 nm. The laser is based on a 1064 nm random distributed ytterbium (Yb) gain-assisted fiber laser seed with a 0.35 nm linewidth and 900 mW polarized output power. A study for the optimal length of the random distributed mirror was carried out. A Yb-doped fiber master oscillator power amplifier architecture is used to amplify the random seeder laser without additional spectral broadening up to 20 W. By using a periodically poled lithium niobate crystal in a single-pass configuration, we generate in excess of 1 W random laser at 532 nm by second-harmonic generation (SHG) with an efficiency of 9%. The green random laser exhibits an instability <1%, an optical signal-to-noise ratio >70 dB, a 0.1 nm linewidth, and excellent beam quality.

RESUMO

We report on a fully bidirectional 680 km fiber link connecting two cities for which the equipment, the setup, and the characterization are managed for the first time by an industrial consortium. The link uses an active telecommunication fiber network with parallel data traffic and is equipped with three repeater laser stations and four remote double bidirectional erbium-doped fiber amplifiers. We report a short-term stability at 1 s integration time of 5.4×10-16 in 0.5 Hz bandwidth and a long-term stability of 1.7×10-20 at 65,000 s of integration time. The accuracy of the frequency transfer is evaluated as 3×10-20. No shift is observed within the statistical uncertainty. We show a continuous operation over five days with an uptime of 99.93%. This performance is comparable with the state-of-the-art coherent links established by National Metrology Institutes in Europe. It is a first step in the construction of an optical fiber network for metrology in France, which will give access to an ultrahigh performance frequency standard to a wide community of scientific users.

RESUMO

We have developed a Watt-level single-frequency tunable fiber laser in the 915-937 nm spectral window. The laser is based on a neodymium-doped fiber master oscillator power amplifier architecture, with two amplification stages using a 20 mW extended cavity diode laser as seed. The system output power is higher than 2 W from 921 to 933 nm, with a stability better than 1.4% and a low relative intensity noise.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Atrioventricular accessory pathways are abnormal electrical connections between the atria and ventricles that predispose to ventricular pre-excitation (VPE) and tachycardias. ANIMALS: Seventeen cats with VPE and 15 healthy matched-control cats. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Multicenter case-control retrospective study. Clinical records were searched for cats with VPE, defined as preserved atrioventricular synchrony, reduced PQ interval, and increased QRS complex duration with a delta wave. Clinical, electrocardiography, echocardiographic, and outcome data were collated. RESULTS: Most cats with VPE were male (16/17 cats), non-pedigree cats (11/17 cats). Median age and mean body weight were 5.4 years (0.3-11.9 years) and 4.6 ± 0.8 kg, respectively. Clinical signs at presentation included lethargy (10/17 cats), tachypnea (6/17 cats), and/or syncope (3/17 cats). In two cats, VPE was an incidental finding. Congestive heart failure was uncommon (3/17 cats). Nine (9/17) cats had tachyarrhythmias: 7/9 cats had narrow QRS complex tachycardia and 2/9 cats had wide QRS complex tachycardia. Four cats had ventricular arrhythmias. Cats with VPE had larger left (P < 0.001) and right (P < 0.001) atria and thicker interventricular septum (P = 0.019) and left ventricular free wall (P = 0.028) than controls. Three cats had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Treatment included different combinations of sotalol (5/17 cats), diltiazem (5/17 cats), atenolol (4/17 cats), furosemide (4/17 cats), and platelet inhibitors (4/17 cats). Five cats died, all from cardiac death (median survival time 1882 days [2-1882 days]). CONCLUSIONS: Cats with VPE had a relatively long survival, albeit showing larger atria and thicker left ventricular walls than healthy cats.

RESUMO

We report the main features and performances of a prototype of an ultra-stable cavity designed and realized by industry for space applications with the aim of space missions. The cavity is a 100 mm long cylinder rigidly held at its midplane by a engineered mechanical interface providing an efficient decoupling from thermal and vibration perturbations. Intensive finite element modeling was performed in order to optimize thermal and vibration sensitivities while getting a high fundamental resonance frequency. The system was designed to be transportable, acceleration tolerant (up to several g) and temperature range compliant [-33°C ; 73°C]. Thermal isolation is ensured by gold coated Aluminum shields inside a stainless steel enclosure for vacuum. The axial vibration sensitivity was evaluated at (4 ± 0.5) × 10(-11)/(m.s(-2)), while the transverse one is < 1 × 10(-11)/(m.s(-2)). The fractional frequency instability is

RESUMO

We report the measurement of the frequency noise power spectral density of a quantum cascade laser emitting at 2.5THz. The technique is based on heterodyning the laser emission frequency with a harmonic of the repetition rate of a near-infrared laser comb. This generates a beatnote in the radio frequency range that is demodulated using a tracking oscillator allowing measurement of the frequency noise. We find that the latter is strongly affected by the level of optical feedback, and obtain an intrinsic linewidth of ~230Hz, for an output power of 2mW.

RESUMO

With 199Hg atoms confined in an optical lattice trap in the Lamb-Dicke regime, we obtain a spectral line at 265.6 nm for which the FWHM is ~15 Hz. Here we lock an ultrastable laser to this ultranarrow 1S0-3P0 clock transition and achieve a fractional frequency instability of 5.4×10(-15)/✓τ for τ ≤ 400 s. The highly stable laser light used for the atom probing is derived from a 1062.6 nm fiber laser locked to an ultrastable optical cavity that exhibits a mean drift rate of -6.0×10(-17) s(-1) (-16.9 mHz s(-1) at 282 THz) over a six month period. A comparison between two such lasers locked to independent optical cavities shows a flicker noise limited fractional frequency instability of 4×10(-16) per cavity.

RESUMO

In dogs, balloon valvuloplasty is considered the treatment of choice for severe pulmonary valve stenosis, and this technique is currently performed routinely in specialist referral practices with low morbidity and mortality. Stent angioplasty has also been recently proposed as a viable treatment option. The present case series describes the clinical course of four dogs with severe pulmonary valve stenosis, treated with balloon valvuloplasty or stent angioplasty at four different institutions, which developed non-cardiogenic pulmonary oedema perioperatively after apparently successful dilation of the pulmonary valve. In three cases, there was evidence of some degree of pulmonary hypertension before ballooning. Despite intensive care, the complication proved fatal in three cases. Clinicians should therefore be aware of this life-threatening complication, previously undescribed in dogs.

RESUMO

In this Letter we report on an all optical-fiber approach to the synthesis of ultralow-noise microwave signals by photodetection of femtosecond laser pulses. We use a cascade of Mach-Zehnder fiber interferometers to realize stable and efficient repetition rate multiplication. This technique increases the signal level of the photodetected microwave signal by close to 18 dB. That in turn allows us to demonstrate a residual phase-noise level of -118 dBc/Hz at 1 Hz and -160 dBc/Hz at 10 MHz from a 12 GHz signal. The residual noise floor of the fiber multiplier and photodetection system alone is around -164 dBc/Hz at the same offset frequency, which is very close to the fundamental shot-noise floor.

RESUMO

We report the heterodyne detection and phase locking of a 2.5 THz quantum cascade laser (QCL) using a terahertz frequency comb generated in a GaAs photomixer using a femtosecond fiber laser. With 10 mW emitted by the QCL, the phase-locked signal at the intermediate frequency yields 80 dB of signal-to-noise ratio in a bandwidth of 1 Hz.

RESUMO

An 11-year-old domestic shorthair cat was referred for investigation of dry cough of 1-week duration and cardiomegaly. Echocardiography revealed pericardial effusion, and eosinophils were identified as the predominant cell type in fluid collected by pericardiocentesis. Thoracic computed tomography imaging and bronchoscopy were supportive of mild lower airway disease, while bronchoalveolar lavage confirmed eosinophilic inflammation and concurrent Mycoplasma felis infection. A few months after the initial presentation, there was clinical deterioration, and further investigation suggested intestinal lymphoma. It was hypothesized that pericardial effusion and lower airway inflammation were an early manifestation of hypereosinophilic syndrome, possibly as a paraneoplastic consequence of lymphoma.

RESUMO

In this Letter we report on an all-optical-fiber approach to the generation of ultra-low-noise microwave signals. We make use of two erbium fiber mode-locked lasers phase locked to a common ultrastable laser source to generate an 11.55 GHz signal with an unprecedented relative phase noise of -111 dBc/Hz at 1 Hz from the carrier. The residual frequency instability of the microwave signals derived from the two optical frequency combs is below 2.3x10(-16) at 1 s and about 4x10(-19) at 6.5x10(4) s (in 5 Hz bandwidth, three days of continuous operation).

RESUMO

A 4-year-old crossbreed dog presented with a two-day history of lethargy and abdominal effusion. Physical examination and echocardiography revealed pericardial effusion with cardiac tamponade. Pericardiocentesis was performed. Intracytoplasmic Leishmania amastigotes were found on cytological examination of the pericardial fluid. The animal was treated with N-methylglucamine antimoniate and allopurinol. After an initial favorable response, cardiac tamponade reoccurred one month later. The dog died during a pericardiectomy four months after the initial diagnosis. Histology confirmed the presence of chronic pericarditis. The presence of Leishmania amastigotes on cytological examination of pericardial effusion suggests a possible association between canine leishmaniasis and chronic pericarditis. This finding also supports the importance of cytological examination of pericardial fluid in areas endemic for canine leishmaniasis.

RESUMO

A four-year-old Japanese Akita was referred for investigation of lethargy, exercise intolerance, and an irregular heart rhythm. He was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, a complex ventricular arrhythmia, and hypothyroidism. Echocardiography identified a nest of anomalous vessels surrounding the heart and shunting into the pulmonary artery. Computed tomography confirmed a coronary arteriovenous malformation consisting of a coronary-to-pulmonary arterial communication and an associated complex nest of tortuous vessels, which was thought to be an incidental finding. Clinical signs improved with levothyroxine and antiarrhythmic treatment. Describing an unusual coronary artery anomaly as well, this case serves as a reminder to critically evaluate the hemodynamic significance of structural cardiac disease and to screen for systemic disease in patients with arrhythmias.

RESUMO

The retinoblastoma susceptibility gene in leukemia and lymphoma has been investigated using different approaches involving either gene or protein analysis. In this study, a novel method, which evaluates the functional status of the retinoblastoma gene product by a binding assay to an in vitro-translated viral oncoprotein, has been applied to leukemic cells from acute myeloid leukemia patients. One hundred twenty-two cases were considered, and 42 of them were also analyzed by Western blot. Results obtained with the two methods were comparable, with the exception of few cases, where the retinoblastoma protein appeared detectable but unable to bind to the viral oncoprotein. The retinoblastoma protein has been found defective mostly in the M3 promyelocytic subtype.

RESUMO

Leveraging the unrivalled performance of optical clocks as key tools for geo-science, for astronomy and for fundamental physics beyond the standard model requires comparing the frequency of distant optical clocks faithfully. Here, we report on the comparison and agreement of two strontium optical clocks at an uncertainty of 5 × 10(-17) via a newly established phase-coherent frequency link connecting Paris and Braunschweig using 1,415 km of telecom fibre. The remote comparison is limited only by the instability and uncertainty of the strontium lattice clocks themselves, with negligible contributions from the optical frequency transfer. A fractional precision of 3 × 10(-17) is reached after only 1,000 s averaging time, which is already 10 times better and more than four orders of magnitude faster than any previous long-distance clock comparison. The capability of performing high resolution international clock comparisons paves the way for a redefinition of the unit of time and an all-optical dissemination of the SI-second.

RESUMO

In skeletal muscle cells permanent withdrawal from the cell cycle is a prerequisite for terminal differentiation. The muscle-specific transcription factor MyoD can activate downstream muscle structural genes and myogenic conversion in many different cell types. It has been demonstrated that the product of the retinoblastoma susceptibility gene, with its growth-suppressive activity, is involved in the myogenic function of MyoD (Caruso et al., 1993; Gu et al., 1993). The present study characterises the modulation of retinoblastoma (Rb1) mRNA levels during myogenic differentiation of the murine C2 cell line and provides evidence that the muscle-specific regulatory factor MyoD enhances Rb1 gene transcription. We demonstrate that MyoD mediates the transactivation of a CAT construct whose expression is driven by the human Rb1 gene promoter, and that this is not a consequence of direct binding of MyoD to an E-box DNA sequence motif present in the Rb1 promoter sequences. In addition we have tested the capability of several MyoD mutant proteins of inducing the Rb1 promoter CAT construct. Our results indicate that the MyoD function required for induction of Rb1 promoter activity is distinct from its myogenic function.

RESUMO

We report on an absolute frequency measurement of the hydrogen 1S-2S two-photon transition in a cold atomic beam with an accuracy of 1.8 parts in 10(14). Our experimental result of 2 466 061 413 187 103(46) Hz has been obtained by phase coherent comparison of the hydrogen transition frequency with an atomic cesium fountain clock. Both frequencies are linked with a comb of laser frequencies emitted by a mode locked laser.
