RESUMO

The use of electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes is strongly on the rise. The literature confirms that in the process of quitting smoking using an electronic device dispensing nicotine should be a transitional stage before the complete cessation of smoking. The aim of the present study was to assess the popularity of e-cigarettes, the underlying reasons for use of such nicotine products, and the level of awareness of health hazards associated with e-cigarettes. The study is of a survey type. The material consisted of data collected from an anonymous survey distributed among 46 female and 23 male users of e-cigarettes in 2015. We used a questionnaire of our own design. The findings demonstrate that the main reason for a recourse to e-cigarettes is a desire to use fashionable technological innovations, and the conviction that such cigarettes are less harmful than the traditional tobacco products. Some respondents used e-cigarettes to quit smoking; others to minimize the harmful effects of smoking. Most respondents acquired information about e-cigarettes from friends or from the Internet. There was a high awareness of the chemical composition of substances contained in e-cigarettes. An interest in e-cigarettes is caused by an increased knowledge on the negative effects of traditional smoking. Currently, the e-cigarettes remains a technological novelty, so that the exact health effects of their long-term use are open to conjecture.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY Anxiety may have negative repercussions on the surgery including poorer outcomes. On the other hand, the majority of patients reporting preoperative anxiety fear not receiving enough attention from a caregiver. In patients undergoing fast-track knee arthroplasty, we determined the relationship between patients' preoperative anxiety and the anxiety the patient's caregiver. We also analyzed the influence of selected psychosocial and demographic variables on the relationship between caregivers' and patients' anxiety. MATERIAL AND METHODS We conducted a prospective, descriptive study in which baseline assessments of patients scheduled to undergo fast-track total knee arthroplasty between 1st November 2014 and 30th April 2015 were compared with those of their caregivers. Patients were recruited from a large teaching hospital through the orthopedics joint replacement clinic. Information on sex, age, body mass index (BMI), educational status, employment status, marital status, and living status was recorded for all patients. Patients and their caregivers completed the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Baseline trait anxiety was assessed with STAI scores in the initial interview, 2 weeks before hospitalization, and state anxiety was assessed the day before the surgery. The patients' caregivers were contacted during a scheduled postoperative clinic visit and asked to complete the STAI and to provide information on their age, degree of consanguinity with patient, and living status. RESULTS The mean age was 66.4 years for the 118 patients and 55.7 years for the 93 caregivers. In male caregivers, caregiver anxiety and patient anxiety were positively related but not statistically so, and in women was not significant. In male patients, a relationship between caregiver's anxiety and patient's anxiety was positive, although not statistically significant, and in women was neither present nor significant. DISCUSSION Given the widespread impacts of anxiety before knee arthroplasty, it is critical for surgeons to gain a better understanding of how to identify and reduce preoperative anxiety in operated patients. We found that male sex among caregivers was associated with more preoperative anxiety among patients than was female sex and that male patients more quickly accepted anxiety from their caregivers than did female patients. CONCLUSIONS Anxious male caregivers appear to impart their anxiety to male patients but not to female patients. The anxiety of unrelated caregivers is associated with low preoperative anxiety among patients. Preoperative interventions should focus on caregivers, especially male caregivers, and to related caregivers to help patients cope with anxiety before knee arthroplasty. Muscle-specific creatine kinase (CKMM) plays a vital role in the energy homeostasis of muscle cells. The A/G variation (rs8111989) located in the 3'-untranslated region of the CKM gene has been found to be the most relevant in terms of genetic testing in sport. The aim of the presented study was to test the hypothesis that the G allele might represent a genetic element that contributes to the improvement of endurance performance in Polish and Russian rowers. The distribution of the CKM genotypes was examined in a group of Polish and Russian athletes in comparison with non-athlete controls. There were no statistical differences between the rowers and the control groups across the CKM genotypes when Polish or Russian participants were analyzed. Based on the obtained results, it may be speculated that the CKM A/G polymorphism is not an important determinant of endurance performance level in Polish and Russian rowers. However, these results should be interpreted with caution as they can be limited by many factors.

Although various intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture have been identified, the exact aetiology of the injury is not yet fully understood. Type III collagen is an important factor in the repair of connective tissue, and certain gene polymorphisms may impair the tensile strength. The aim of this study was to examine the association of the COL3A1 rs1800255 polymorphism with ACL rupture in Polish male recreational skiers. A total of 321 male Polish recreational skiers were recruited for this study; 138 had surgically diagnosed primary ACL ruptures (ACL-injured group) and 183 were apparently healthy male skiers (control group - CON) who had no self-reported history of ligament or tendon injury. Both groups had a comparable level of exposure to ACL injury. Genomic DNA was extracted from the oral epithelial cells. All samples were genotyped on a real-time polymerase chain reaction instrument. The genotype distribution in the ACL-injured group was significantly different than in CON (respectively: AA=10.1 vs 2.2%, AG=22.5 vs 36.1, GG=67.4 vs 61.8%; p=0.0087). The AA vs AG+GG genotype of COL3A1 (odds ratio (OR)=5.05; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.62-15.71, p=0.003) was significantly overrepresented in the ACL-injured group compared with CON. The frequency of the A allele was higher in the ACL-injured group (21.4%) compared with CON (20.2%), but the difference was not statistically significant (p=0.72). This study revealed an association between the COL3A1 rs1800255 polymorphism and ACL ruptures in Polish skiers.

One of the most severe injuries sustained by athletes is rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Recent investigations suggest that a predisposition for ACL rupture may be the result of specific genetic sequence variants. In light of this, we decided to investigate whether the COL12A1 A9285G polymorphism was associated with ACL ruptures in Polish football players. We compared genotypic and allelic frequencies of the COL12A1 A9285G polymorphism in two groups of athletes: 91 male football players (23 ± 3 years) with surgically diagnosed primary ACL ruptures who qualified for ligament reconstruction (cases) and 143 apparently healthy, male football players of the same ethnicity, a similar age category, and a comparable level of exposure to ACL injury, who were without any self-reported history of ligament or tendon injury (controls). DNA samples extracted from the oral epithelial cells were genotyped by using a real-time polymerase chain reaction (Ri-Ti-PCR) method. The genotype distribution in the cases were not different from those in controls (p = 0.70). The frequency of the G allele was lower in the cases (18.1%) but not statistically significant (p = 0.40) when compared with controls (21.3%). Our results are in contradiction to the hypothesis that the COL12A1 A9285G polymorphism is associated with a predisposition for ACL injury. However, these conclusions should be supported with more experimental studies on COL12A1 polymorphisms.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to examine the association of +1245G/T polymorphisms in the COL1A1 gene with ACL ruptures in Polish male recreational skiers in a case-control study. METHODS: A total of 138 male recreational skiers with surgically diagnosed primary ACL ruptures, all of whom qualified for ligament reconstruction, were recruited for this study. The control group comprised 183 apparently healthy male skiers with a comparable level of exposure to ACL injury, none of whom had any self-reported history of ligament or tendon injury. DNA samples extracted from the oral epithelial cells were genotyped for the +1245G/T polymorphisms using real-time PCR method. RESULTS: Genotype distributions among cases and controls conformed to Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (p = 0.2469 and p = 0.33, respectively). There was a significant difference in the genotype distribution between skiers and controls (p = 0.045, Fisher's exact test). There was no statistical difference in allele distribution: OR 1.43 (0.91-2.25), p = 0.101 (two-sided Fisher's exact test). CONCLUSIONS: The risk of ACL ruptures was around 1.43 times lower in carriers of a minor allele G as compared to carriers of the allele T.
