RESUMO

The growing demand for food has led to an increase in the use of herbicides and pesticides over the years. One of the most widely used herbicides is glyphosate (GLY). It has been used extensively since 1974 for weed control and is currently classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a Group 2A substance, probably carcinogenic to humans. The industry and academia have some disagreements regarding GLY toxicity in humans and its effects on the environment. Even though this herbicide is not mentioned in the WHO water guidelines, some countries have decided to set maximum acceptable concentrations in tap water, while others have decided to ban its use in crop production completely. Researchers around the world have employed different technologies to remove or degrade GLY, mostly at the laboratory scale. Water treatment plants combine different technologies to remove it alongside other water pollutants, in some cases achieving acceptable removal efficiencies. Certainly, there are many challenges in upscaling purification technologies due to the costs and lack of factual information about their adverse effects. This review presents different technologies that have been used to remove GLY from water since 2012 to date, its detection and removal methods, challenges, and future perspectives.

A series of adsorbents (activated carbons, ACs) were synthesized by physical and chemical activation of olive stones (OS) and their textural and chemical characteristics determined by complementary techniques such as N2 and CO2 physisorption, pH of the point zero of charge (pHPZC), HRSEM or XPS. Samples with a wide range of physicochemical properties were obtained by fitting the activation procedure. The performance of these adsorbents in filters working under dynamic conditions was studied by determining the corresponding breakthrough curves for the ethylene removal. The physicochemical transformations of OS during activation were related with the adsorptive performance of derivative ACs. Results were compared to those obtained using commercial carbons, in particular ACs, carbon black or carbon fibers, in order to identify the properties of these materials on influencing the adsorptive performance. In general, ACs from OS perform better than the commercial samples, being also easily regenerated and properly used during consecutive adsorption cycles. CO2-activation showed to be the best synthesis option, leading to granular ACs with a suitable microporosity and surface chemistry. These results could favour the integration of this type of inexpensive materials on devices for the preservation of climacteric fruits, in a clear example of circular economy by reusing the agricultural residues.

It is a known and experimentally verified fact that the flow of pressure-driven nanoconfined fluids cannot be accurately described by the Navier-Stokes (NS) equations with non-slip boundary conditions, and the measured volumetric flow rates are much higher than those predicted by macroscopical continuum models. In particular, the flow enhancement factors (the ratio between the flow rates directly measured by experiments or simulations and those predicted by the non-slip NS equation) reported by previous studies have more than five orders of magnitude differences. We showcased an anomalous phenomenon in which the flow enhancement exhibits a non-monotonic correlation with fluid pressure within the carbon nanotube with a diameter of 2 nm. Molecular dynamics simulations indicate that the inconsistency of flow behaviors is attributed to the phase transition of nanoconfined fluid induced by fluid pressures. The nanomechanical mechanisms are contributed by complex hydrogen-bonding interactions and regulated water orientations. This study suggests a method for explaining the inconsistency of flow enhancements by considering the pressure-dependent molecular structures.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Clinical correlates of fear of falling (FoF) are scarcely studied in patients with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and multiple system atrophy (MSA). This study was undertaken to evaluate the clinical correlates of FoF in PSP and MSA. METHODS: This cross-sectional study features motor, cognitive, and psychiatric assessment and longitudinal evaluation of falls and FoF at 6-month follow-up. RESULTS: Twenty-one patients with PSP-parkinsonism, 22 patients with MSA (13 parkinsonian type and nine cerebellar type), and 22 healthy controls were evaluated; 76.2% of patients with PSP and 86.4% of patients with MSA had FoF regardless of falls. Berg Balance Scale (p < 0.001), Tinetti Mobility Test (p < 0.01), Beck Anxiety Inventory (p = 0.001), and Beck Depression Inventory-II (p = 0.01) correlated with FoF in patients with PSP and MSA, whereas Timed Up and Go test (p = 0.01) and Starkstein Apathy Scale correlated only in MSA (p = 0.04). CONCLUSIONS: Mobility, balance, and gait performance as well as anxiety and depression in PSP and MSA, and apathy in MSA, were determinants of FoF. These findings underline the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to FoF in neurodegenerative atypical parkinsonism.

PURPOSE: Despite the availability of the Unified Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) Rating Scale (UMSARS) for almost two decades, studies still use scales developed for Parkinson's disease (PD) or ataxia (ATX). Our aim was to evaluate the use of UMSARS (part II, motor) compared to other motor rating scales in patients with MSA. METHODS: A Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA)-compliant literature search was conducted concerning studies of patients with MSA, reporting motor assessment with clinical rating scales, and focusing on the frequency of UMSARS use. RESULTS: We included 261 articles, of which 42.9% did not use UMSARS, but rather scales for PD (59.8%), ATX (24.1%), or both (14.3%). Although UMSARS use increased with time, misuse of PD and ATX scales persists, with no evidence of a decremental trend. CONCLUSIONS: Although higher in observational studies, the misuse of PD and ATX-related scales in MSA patients persists in prospective (planned) trials. Reasons for that must be addressed.

A study on the classification of copper concentrates relevant to the copper refining industry is performed by means of reflectance hyperspectral images in the visible and near infrared (VIS-NIR) bands (400-1000 nm) and in the short-wave infrared (SWIR) (900-1700 nm) band. A total of 82 copper concentrate samples were press compacted into 13-mm-diameter pellets, and their mineralogical composition was characterized via quantitative evaluation of minerals and scanning electron microscopy. The most representative minerals contained in these pellets are bornite, chalcopyrite, covelline, enargite, and pyrite. Three databases (VIS-NIR, SWIR, and VIS-NIR-SWIR) containing a collection of average reflectance spectra computed from 9×9p i x e l neighborhoods in each pellet hyperspectral image are compiled to train the classification models. The classification models tested in this work are a linear discriminant classifier and two non-linear classifiers, a quadratic discriminant classifier, and a fine K-nearest neighbor classifier (FKNNC). The results obtained show that the joint use of VIS-NIR and SWIR bands allows for the accurate classification of similar copper concentrates that contain only minor differences in their mineralogical composition. Specifically, among the three tested classification models, the FKNNC performs the best in terms of overall classification accuracy, achieving 93.4% accuracy in the test set when only VIS-NIR data are used to construct the classification model, up to 80.5% using only SWIR data, and up to 97.6% using both VIS-NIR and SWIR bands together.

Fishing landings in Chile are inspected to control fisheries that are subject to catch quotas. The control process is not easy since the volumes extracted are large and the numbers of landings and artisan shipowners are high. Moreover, the number of inspectors is limited, and a non-automated method is utilized that normally requires months of training. In this work, we propose, design, and implement an automated fish landing control system. The system consists of a custom gate with a camera array and controlled illumination that performs automatic video acquisition once the fish landing starts. The imagery is sent to the cloud in real time and processed by a custom-designed detection algorithm based on deep convolutional networks. The detection algorithm identifies and classifies different pelagic species in real time, and it has been tuned to identify the specific species found in landings of two fishing industries in the Biobío region in Chile. A web-based industrial software was also developed to display a list of fish detections, record relevant statistical summaries, and create landing reports in a user interface. All the records are stored in the cloud for future analyses and possible Chilean government audits. The system can automatically, remotely, and continuously identify and classify the following species: anchovy, jack mackerel, jumbo squid, mackerel, sardine, and snoek, considerably outperforming the current manual procedure.

Fishing has provided mankind with a protein-rich source of food and labor, allowing for the development of an important industry, which has led to the overexploitation of most targeted fish species. The sustainable management of these natural resources requires effective control of fish landings and, therefore, an accurate calculation of fishing quotas. This work proposes a deep learning-based spatial-spectral method to classify five pelagic species of interest for the Chilean fishing industry, including the targeted Engraulis ringens, Merluccius gayi, and Strangomera bentincki and non-targeted Normanichthtys crockeri and Stromateus stellatus fish species. This proof-of-concept method is composed of two channels of a convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture that processes the Red-Green-Blue (RGB) images and the visible and near-infrared (VIS-NIR) reflectance spectra of each species. The classification results of the CNN model achieved over 94% in all performance metrics, outperforming other state-of-the-art techniques. These results support the potential use of the proposed method to automatically monitor fish landings and, therefore, ensure compliance with the established fishing quotas.

A three-dimensional point spread function experimental estimation method based on the system's focal plane array spatial local impulse response of a mid-wave infrared microscope is presented. The method uses several out-of-focus two-dimensional point spread function planes to achieve a single three-dimensional point spread function of the whole microscope's optical spreading, expanding the limits of infrared optical technology by one dimension. This technique includes stages of image acquisition, nonuniformity correction, filtering, and multi-planar reconstruction steps, and its effectiveness is demonstrated on biological sample image restoration by means of a multi-planar refocusing application.

BACKGROUND: Caregivers of children undergoing growth hormone treatment often face stress and stigma. In this regard, family-centered approaches are increasingly considered, wherein caregivers' mental wellbeing is taken into account to optimize children's health-related outcomes and behaviors (e.g., treatment adherence). Here, mindfulness and parenting-based programs have been developed to support the mental wellbeing of caregivers and, in turn, promote richer interactions with the children. Nevertheless, this type of program can face drawbacks, such as the scheduling and availability of family members. Recent digital health (DH) solutions (e.g., mobile apps) are showing promising advantages as self-management support tools for improving wellbeing and behaviors related to the treatments. Although, further evidence is necessary in the field of Growth Hormone Treatment (GHt). Accordingly, this study aims to examine the usability of a mobile DH solution and the feasibility of a DH intervention designed to promote emotional and mental wellbeing of caregivers of children undergoing GHt. METHODS: This is a prospective mixed-methods (qualitative-quantitative) exploratory study composed of two sub-studies, including caregivers of children undergoing GHt. Sub-study one (SS1; n = 10) focuses on the usability of the DH solution (detecting potential barriers and facilitators) and an ad hoc semi-structured interview will be administered to the caregivers after using the DH solution for one month. Sub-study two (SS2; n = 55) aims to evaluate the feasibility of the DH intervention on caregivers' perceived distress, positive affectivity, mental wellbeing, self-efficacy, together with the children's quality of life and treatment adherence. All these parameters will be assessed via quantitative methods before and after 3-months of the DH intervention. Usability and engagement will also be assessed during and at the end of the study. RESULTS: It is expected that significant amounts of data will be captured with regards of the feasibility of the DH solution. DISCUSSION: The manuscript provides a complete protocol for a study that will include qualitative and quantitative information about, on one hand, the user-friendliness of the DH solution, and on the other, the effects on caregivers' emotional, as well as, behavioral parameters in terms of the usability and engagement to the DH solution. The findings will contribute to the evidence planning process for the future adoption of digital health solutions for caregiver support and better health-related outcomes. A series of adsorbents was developed by physical (CO2) and chemical (KOH) activation of two bio-residues: olive stones (OS) and wood from olive tree pruning (OTP). The physicochemical properties of such materials were determined and correlated with their adsorptive performance in the removal of phenolic compounds of olive mill wastewater (OMW). Adsorption isotherms and kinetics of single phenolic acids, as well as the kinetics for competitive multi-compound adsorption, were fitted by applying different models, though Langmuir and pseudo-second order models fitted better the experimental results, respectively. The intraparticle diffusion model pointed out that mesoporosity reduces the influence of phenolic compounds' restrictions in the external film diffusion of the adsorbent particle-solution interphase, but adsorption capacity linearly increases with the micropore volume accessible to N2 at -196 °C (and also with BET surface area), while diffusion into ultramicropores (<0.7 nm, determined by CO2-adsorption) is slow and presents minor influence on the total adsorption capacity. After saturation, thermal regeneration of spent adsorbents allows the removal of adsorbed products, enabling the reuse of samples whilst maintaining a significant performance.

This work characterizes two alternative materials to substitute the most expensive microbial fuel cells (MFCs) components: proton exchange membrane (PEM) and cathode. Crude glycerol biodegradation was studied in MFCs using a clay cup as a PEM and activated carbon and camphor carbon mixture (CAC) as a cathode. The cathode performance was compared with Platinum on carbon cloth. Two clay cup single-chamber MFCs were operated with each cathode and fed with 2000 mg/L of crude glycerol. Electrochemical properties were characterized by linear sweep voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and chronoamperometry. Biodegradation efficiencies were estimated with the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal percentage. MFCs with CAC showed a maximum power density of 100 mW/m2. This result was a 43.47% power response regarding MFCs with Platinum. COD removal efficiencies of 94% were achieved in 37 days for both cells. The Columbic efficiencies were 24.04% and 22.78% for the MFCs with Platinum and CAC. The economic analysis showed a cost of USD 9.97 for MFCs with CAC. This cost is five times lower than when using Platinum. MFCs utilizing clay cups and CAC showed an acceptable performance for the bioenergy production from crude glycerol biodegradation above all economic advantage in the cell cost.

The effect of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in sexual function is one of the least studied areas. There are few previous studies that investigate sexual function in SLE, and current evidence indicates a negative impact. The main objective of this study is to evaluate sexual function in Mexican women with SLE and compare if sexual dysfunction occurs in a greater proportion than in healthy women. A case-control study with 102 Mexican women between 18 and 60 years, with SLE diagnosis and a control group of healthy women (n = 156) matched by age. They were asked about their sexual life in the last month, and the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) self-questionnaire was applied. Variables between groups were compared with Chi-square and Mann-Whitney U test. SLE women had less sexual activity than controls (63.7% vs 77.5%, p = 0.01). Out of the total, the FSFI was applied only to those that had an active sexual life, 65 with SLE and 121 healthy women. Sexual dysfunction (< 26.5 points) was found in 28% women with SLE and in 22% of controls, with no significant differences (p = 0.4). In the SLE group, a worse performance was found in the desire and excitation domains compared to healthy women. SLE women had less active sexual life than healthy women, but no greater sexual dysfunction. However, they performed worse in the desire and excitation domains. This alteration did not show a relation with demographic nor disease-related variables.

AIMS: To explore the relationship between mindfulness, self-compassion and psychological flexibility, and the burnout subtypes in university students of the Psychology and Nursing degrees, and to analyse possible risk factors for developing burnout among socio-demographic and studies-related characteristics. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study conducted on a sample of 644 undergraduate students of Nursing and Psychology from two Spanish universities. METHODS: The study was conducted between December 2015 and May 2016. Bivariate Pearson's correlations were computed to analyse the association between mindfulness facets, self-compassion and psychological flexibility, and levels of burnout. Multivariate linear regression models and bivariate and multivariate binary logistic regressions were also computed. RESULTS: The three subtypes of burnout presented significant correlations with psychological flexibility, self-compassion and some mindfulness facets. Psychological flexibility, self-compassion and the mindfulness facets of observing and acting with awareness were significantly associated to burnout. Among the risk factors, 'year of study' was the only variable to show significantly higher risk for every burnout subtype. CONCLUSION: The significant associations found between mindfulness, self-compassion, psychological flexibility and burnout levels underline the need of including these variables as therapeutic targets when addressing the burnout syndrome in university students. IMPACT: Undergraduate students, especially those of health sciences, often experience burnout. This study delves into the protective role of some psychological variables: mindfulness, self-compassion and psychological flexibility. These should be considered as potentially protective skills for developing burnout, and therefore, undergraduate students could be trained on these abilities to face their studies and their future profession to prevent experiencing burnout syndrome.

In this paper, a novel optical technique for following the progress of the blister copper desulfurization process is presented. The technique is based on the changes observed in the continuous spectrum of the visible-near-infrared (VIS-NIR) radiation that the blister melt emits while the chemical reactions of the sulfur elimination process are taking place. Specifically, the proposed technique uses an optical probe composed of an optical fiber, a collimating lens, and a quartz tube, which is immersed in the melt. This optical probe provides a field of view of the blowing zone where the desulfurization reaction occurs. The experimental results show that the melt VIS-NIR total irradiance evolves inversely to the SO2 concentration reported by a gas analyzer based on differential optical absorption spectroscopy. Furthermore, the blister copper spectral emissivity as well as the total emissivity observed throughout the process show strong correlation with the sulfur content during desulfurization reaction.

RESUMO

Escherichia coli colonies were grown on different supports for the removal of nitrates from water. A carbon material and different commercial metal oxides, such as SiO2, TiO2 and Al2O3, and their corresponding carbon-metal oxide composites were studied. The physicochemical properties were analyzed by different techniques and the results were correlated with their performance in the denitrification process. Developed biofilms effectively adhere to the supports and always reach the complete reduction of nitrates to gaseous products. Nevertheless, faster processes occur when the biofilm is supported on mesoporous and non-acid materials (carbon and silica).

Ibuprofen degradation and energy generation in a single-chamber Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) were evaluated using a bioanode fabricated from devil fish bone char (BCA) synthesized by calcination in air atmosphere. Its performance was compared with conventional carbon felt (CF). Bone char textural properties were determined by nitrogen adsorption. Before and after, the bacterial colonization on the materials was analyzed by environmental scanning electron microscopy. Energy generation was evaluated by electrochemical techniques as open-circuit potential, linear sweep voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Ibuprofen degradation was analyzed by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Ultraviolet, and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal was measured. Results showed a specific area of 136 m2/g for BCA, having enough space to immobilize microorganisms. The micrographs confirmed the biofilm formation on the electrode materials. Over the 14 days, MFC with BCA reached a maximum power density of 4.26 mW/m2, 175% higher than CF, and an electron transfer resistance 2.1 times lower than it. This coincides with the COD removal and ibuprofen degradation efficiencies, which were 43.6% and 34% for BCA and 31.8% and 27% for CF. Hence, these findings confirmed that BCA in MFC could provide an alternative electrode material for ibuprofen degradation and energy generation.

We propose a 3D full-field focusing method for microscopic mid-wave infrared (MWIR) imagery. The method is based on the experimental estimation of a confined volumetric vision microscope point spread function. The technique employs our well-known constant-range-based nonuniformity correction algorithm as a preprocessing step and then an iteration in the z-axis Fourier-based deconvolution. The technique's ability to compensate for localized blur is demonstrated using two different real MWIR microscopic video sequences, captured from two microscopic living organisms using a Janos-Sofradir MWIR microscopy setup. The performance of the proposed algorithm is assessed on real and simulated noisy infrared data by computing the root-mean-square error and the roughness Laplacian pattern indexes, which are specifically developed for the present work.

BACKGROUND: Mexican health system structure allows us to study the differences in bile duct injury (BDI) management. The study aimed to assess the differences in patients with complex BDI in 2 different public sector institutions using a new proposed standard terminology. METHODS: Retrospective review (2008-2019) in 2 public institutions (IMSS/SESVER). Bismuth-Strasberg E injuries with hepaticojejunostomy were included. Data are presented in a tabular reporting system. The outcomes were percent of patients attaining primary patency, loss of primary patency, and actuarial primary patency rate. RESULTS: Seventy-eight patients (IMSS: n = 37; SESVER: n = 41) without differences in demographic and preoperative assessment were studied. BDI occurred mostly in outside hospitals. Open cholecystectomy was the most common index operation in SESVER (73%, p = 0.02). IMSS had more surgeries (p = 0.007) and repair attempts (p = 0.06) prior to referral. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography was more commonly used in IMSS patients. Biliary stents (45%) and cholangitis (29%) were more common in IMSS (p < 0.05). IMSS patients had longer follow-up than SESVER (p < 0.05). No differences in primary patency rates (IMSS: 89%, SESVER: 97%) and actuarial patency rates were noted. DISCUSSION: Despite differences in referral, preoperative, and operative events, good BDI repair outcomes can be achieved. Longer follow-up is needed to monitor these outcomes.

The Body-Specificity Hypothesis postulates that the space surrounding the dominant hand is perceived as positive due to the motor fluency of this hand, whereas the space surrounding the non-dominant hand is perceived as negative. Experimental studies based on this theoretical framework also revealed associations between affective valence and hand dominance (i.e., dominant hand-positive; non-dominant hand-negative), or lateral movements of the hands (i.e., right hand toward the right space-positive; left hand toward the left space-positive). Interestingly, these associations have not been examined with regard to how lateral actions of the hands may influence affective experiences as, for example, in valence appraisals of affective objects that have been manipulated. The study presented here has considered this question in light of the emerging interest of embodied cognition approaches to interactive technologies, particularly in affective experiences with touchscreen interfaces. Accordingly, right-handed participants evaluated the valence of positive and negative emotional pictures after interacting with them either with the dominant right or with the non-dominant left hand. Specifically, they moved the pictures either from left to right or from right to left sides of a touchscreen monitor. The results indicated that a valence matching between the hand used for the interactions, the picture's valence category, and the movement's starting side reinforced the valence appraisals of the pictures (i.e., positive/negative pictures were more positively/negatively evaluated). The findings are discussed against the background of the Theory of Event Coding, which accounts for both the affective properties of the stimuli and the affective connotation of the related action.
