RESUMO

Combined antifungal and antioxidant therapy may help to reduce oxidative stress in fungal keratitis. Experimental Fusarium solani keratitis was induced by application of F. solani conidia to scarified cornea (right eye) of 16 rabbits (another four rabbits were negative controls [Group I]). Five days later, F. solani-infected animals began receiving hourly topical saline alone (Group II), voriconazole (10 mg/mL) alone (Group III), epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG, 10 mg/mL) alone (Group IV) or voriconazole and EGCG (Group V). Twenty days post-inoculation, corneal lesions were graded. After animal sacrifice, excised corneas underwent histopathological and microbiological investigations. Corneal tissue levels/activities of interleukin 1 beta (IL-1ß) and tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) gene mRNA transcripts, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) 2 and 9 proteins, malondialdehyde (MDA) and reduced glutathione (GSH), and superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx), were also measured. Clinical and histopathological scores (severity of corneal lesions; [P < .05]) and mean levels (P < .05) of IL-1ß and TNF-α mRNA transcripts, MMP 2, MMP 9 and MDA were Group II > Groups IV and III > Groups V and I. Mean SOD, CAT, GPx and GSH levels (P < .05) were Group II < Groups IV and III < Groups V and I. Topical voriconazole with EGCG apparently reduces inflammation in experimental F. solani keratitis, as manifested by improved clinical, histological, microbiological and molecular parameters.

RESUMO

Adenosquamous carcinoma (ASC), a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma, is an aggressive and highly infiltrating epithelial neoplasm, which has a distinct histomorphological features comprising simultaneous areas of squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. Some researchers consider it as a controversial neoplasm, as it may arise from the ducts of the minor salivary gland or from the overlying surface epithelium. In the head-and-neck region, commonly affected sites include paranasal sinuses, larynx and oral cavity. Areas of occurrence in the oral cavity include palate, tonsillar pillar areas, tongue and floor of the mouth. The prognosis of the neoplasm is considered poor due to its early recurrence, local and distant metastasis and low survival rate. This article reports a case of ASC affecting the posterior part of the tongue in a 50-year-old male patient and an overview of its histogenetic concepts.

RESUMO

In this study, visible light driven BiFeWO6/BiVO4 nanocomposite was synthesized via simple additive-free wet-chemical process. Various physicochemical characterization methods such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electrons microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) spectra, UV visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), photoluminescence (PL) and photoelectrochemical measurements were performed to examine the structure, surface morphology, electrochemical and optical behavior of the synthesized material. The photocatalytic performances of the as-synthesized materials were assessed by the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) in visible-light illumination. The optimum BiFeWO6/BiVO4-2 nanocomposite has shown 95% degradation efficiency of (MB) after 90min. This is about 10-folds higher than that of pristine bismuth vanadate (BiVO4). This enhancement of photocatalytic performances is credited to the photogenerated electrons transfer from BiVO4 to BiFeWO6 catalyst surface and thereby reduced the recombination process. The higher photocatalytic activity, long-term stability and recyclability results have revealed that the BiFeWO6/BiVO4 nanocomposite could be an auspicious material for the elimination of organic contaminants present in the ecosystem. Moreover, a probable mechanism for the catalytic degradation of MB dye over BiFeWO6/BiVO4 system is also proposed based on experimental results.

RESUMO

A study was carried out in 18 patients with rheumatoid arthritis to compare the effects of two different preparations of indomethacin with placebo on night pain, sleep and duration of morning stiffness. Patients were treated for 1 night each, in random order, with identical capsules containing 75 mg indomethacin, either as 'Indomod' (all sustained-release form) or 'Indocid' R (25 mg normal, 50 mg sustained-release form), or placebo as a substitute for their usual night-time medication. The results of visual analogue scale scores and a standard sleep assessment questionnaire score indicated the same order of effectiveness for each of the three parameters, with 'Indomod' best, 'Indocid' R intermediate and placebo worst, but only the difference in sleep was statistically significant. 'Indomod', therefore, might offer a slight advantage over the same dose of indomethacin as 'Indocid' R given at night. Less side-effects were produced by active treatment than by placebo and none was severe.

RESUMO

Plasma cells are medium-sized round-to-oval cells with eccentrically placed nuclei, usually found in the red pulp of the spleen, tonsils, medulla of the lymph nodes, nasal mucosa, upper airway, lamina propria of the gastrointestinal tract, and sites of inflammation. Plasma cell granuloma is a rare reactive tumor-like proliferation composed chiefly of plasmacytic infiltrate. Here, we present a case of plasma cell granuloma of lip in a female patient.

RESUMO

Five hundred and fifteen patients aged 60 and over (mean age 74.7; 278 men and 237 women) underwent routine endoscopic procedures (gastroscopy, bronchoscopy and cystoscopy). Alternate patients were given antibiotics before the procedure, as currently recommended, and blood was taken for culture from all patients within five minutes of completion of the procedure. Of 74 patients who underwent bronchoscopy, only one culture, from one of 37 controls was positive. Of 262 who underwent gastroscopy, cultures were negative in the 130 who received antibiotics but positive in 13 of the 132 controls (9.8 per cent p less than 0.001). Cystoscopy was performed in 179; one culture was positive in the 88 given antibiotics (1.1 per cent) compared to 25 in the 91 controls (27.5 per cent; p less than 0.001). Bacteraemia rates appear to be low following bronchoscopy (less than 5 per cent) but higher with gastroscopy (10 per cent) and cystoscopy (28 per cent). Chemoprophylaxis was effective in reducing these rates in this patient group.
