RESUMO

The aim of the current work was to evaluate the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility of Campylobacter spp. isolated from different chicken production systems at the slaughterhouse level. Chicken sampling at slaughterhouse was performed for cecum, carcass, and breast meat from flocks of organic (n = 6), extensive indoor (n = 14), and intensive production (n = 14), totaling 34 ceca pools, 64 neck skin pools, and 132 breasts, representing 96,386 chickens. A collection of 167 strains were identified as Campylobacter coli (n = 85) and Campylobacter jejuni (n = 82) and were tested for susceptibility to 11 antimicrobial agents by the disk diffusion method. The frequency of Campylobacter in chicken samples from different production systems was between 79 and 100%. Campylobacter isolated from all origins were resistant to the fluoroquinolones studied (80-98%). However, for ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin, the Campylobacter isolates from extensive indoor chicken were significantly (P < 0.05) less resistant (77 and 58%) than that from organic (97 and 91%) and intensive production (96 and 95%). A high probability of tetracycline resistance occurrence was also found for the Campylobacter spp. tested (58% for C. jejuni and 76% for C. coli). A more frequent profile of multidrug resistance was noticed for isolates from intensive and organic production than for extensive indoor production. These results reinforce the need of efficient strategy implementation to control and reduce Campylobacter in chickens at production and slaughter levels, and the necessity to reduce the use of antimicrobials in poultry sector.

The objective of this paper is to critically review and summarize available scientific and lay literature, and ongoing studies on human and porcine cysticercosis in Mozambique to identify knowledge gaps and direct immediate and long-term research efforts. Data on the spatial distribution and prevalence of the disease in human and swine populations are scarce and fragmented. Human serological studies have shown that 15-21% of apparently healthy adults were positive for cysticercosis antibodies or antigen, while in neuropsychiatric patients seroprevalence was as high as 51%. Slaughterhouse records indicate a countrywide occurrence of porcine cysticercosis, while studies have shown that 10-35% of pigs tested were seropositive for cysticercosis antibodies or antigen. Current research in Mozambique includes studies on the epidemiology, molecular biology, diagnosis and control of the disease. Future research efforts should be directed at better understanding the epidemiology of the disease in Mozambique, particularly risk factors for its occurrence and spread in human and swine populations, documenting the socio-economic impact of the disease, identifying critical control points and evaluating the feasibility and epidemiological impact of control measures and development of local level diagnostic tools for use in humans and swine.

The distribution of the 22 kDa secretory protein from rat ventral prostate was studied by light and electron microscopic immunocytochemistry. An anti-22 kDa protein antiserum was raised in rabbits and its specificity was tested by Western blotting. With the immunofluorescence technique, the 22 kDa protein was detected in the luminal secretions and intracellular apical granules of the ventral prostate. No reaction was observed in the seminal vesicle or dorsolateral prostate. After castration, no intracellular immunoreactivity was detected in ventral prostate, although positively labeled secretory material was retained within the acinar lumen. Restoration of normal intracellular staining pattern was incomplete after 5 daily testosterone injections. At the ultrastructural level, labeling was confined to apical secretory granules and condensing vacuoles. The 22 kDa protein separated by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and transferred to nitrocellulose was shown to bind intensely to wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) but only faintly to Concanavalin A. This protein was thus demonstrated to contain N-acetylglucosamine residues. Accordingly, on tissue sections, WGA reacted intensely with condensing vacuoles and secretory granules.
