RESUMO

Forensic chemistry plays a crucial role in aiding law enforcement investigations by applying analytical techniques for the analysis of evidence. While bloodstains are frequently encountered at crime scenes, distinguishing between peripheral and menstrual bloodstains presents a challenge. This is due to their similar appearance post-drying. Raman spectroscopy has emerged as a promising technique capable of discriminating between the two types of bloodstains, offering invaluable probative information. Moreover, estimating the time since deposition (TSD) of bloodstains aids in crime scene reconstruction and prioritizing what evidence to collect. Despite extensive research focusing on TSD estimations, primarily in peripheral bloodstains, a crucial gap exists in determining the TSD of menstrual bloodstains. This study demonstrates how Raman spectroscopy effectively analyzes biological samples like menstrual blood, showing similar aging patterns to those of peripheral blood and provides proof-of-concept models for determining the TSD of menstrual blood. While this work shows promising results for creating a universal model for bloodstain age determination, further testing with more donors needs to be conducted before the implementation of this method into forensic practice.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the potential long-term cardiac effects after multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) with cardiovascular involvement in the acute phase. STUDY DESIGN: Our prospective study involved children consecutively diagnosed with MIS-C between October 2020 and February 2022 and followed 6 weeks and 6 months after the disease. In patients with severe cardiac involvement during the acute phase, an additional check-up after 3 months was scheduled. In all patients at all check-ups, 3-dimensional echocardiography and global longitudinal strain (GLS) were used to assess ventricular function. RESULTS: The study enrolled 172 children aged 1-17 years (median, 8 years). The means of ejection fraction (EF) and GLS for both ventricles were within normal limits after 6 weeks with no relationship with initial severity: left ventricular EF (LVEF) 60% (59%-63%), LV GLS -21.08% (-18.63% to -23.2%), right ventricular (RV) EF 64% (62%-67%), and RV GLS -22.8% (-20.5% to -24.5%). Further, statistically significant improvement of LV function was observed after 6 months-LVEF 63% (62%-65%) and LV GLS -22.55% (-21.05% to -24.25%; P < .05); however, RV function remained unchanged. The group with severe cardiac involvement showed LV function recovery pattern with no significant improvement between 6 weeks and 3 months after MIS-C, while still improving between 3 and 6 months after discharge. CONCLUSIONS: LV and RV function is within normal limits 6 weeks after MIS-C regardless of severity of cardiovascular involvement; LV function improves further between 6 weeks and 6 months after the disease. The long-term prognosis is optimistic with full recovery of cardiac function.

Background and Objectives: In the era of the COVID-19 pandemic, telemedicine, so far underestimated, has gained in value. Currently, telemedicine is not only a telephone or chat consultation, but also the possibility of the remote recording of signals (such as ECG, saturation, and heart rate) or even remote auscultation of the lungs. The objective of this review article is to present a potential role for, and disseminate knowledge of, telemedicine during the COVID-19 pandemic. Material and Methods: In order to analyze the research material in accordance with PRISMA guidelines, a systematic search of the ScienceDirect, Web of Science, and PubMed databases was conducted. Out of the total number of 363 papers identified, 22 original articles were subjected to analysis. Results: This article presents the possibilities of remote patient registration, which contributes to an improvement in remote diagnostics and diagnoses. Conclusions: Telemedicine is, although not always and not by everyone, an accepted form of providing medical services. It cannot replace direct patient-doctor contact, but it can undoubtedly contribute to accelerating diagnoses and improving their quality at a distance.

Elastin is one of the main structural matrix proteins of the arteries, lung, cartilage, elastic ligaments, brain vessels, and skin. These elastin fibers display incredible resilience and structural stability with long half-life. However, during some physiological and pathophysiological conditions, elastin is prone to proteolytic degradation and, due to the extremely low turnover rate, its degradation is practically an irreversible and irreparable phenomenon. As a result of elastin degradation, new peptides called elastin-derived peptides (EDPs) are formed. A growing body of evidence suggests that these peptides play an important role in the development of age-related vascular disease. They are also detected in the cerebrospinal fluid of healthy people, and their amount increases in patients after ischemic stroke. Recently, elastin-like polypeptides have been reported to induce overproduction of beta-amyloid in a model of Alzheimer's disease. Nevertheless, the role and mechanism of action of EDPs in the nervous system is largely unknown and limited to only a few studies. The article summarizes the current state of knowledge on the role of EDPs in the nervous system.

The stability of psychotropic substances representing various drug groups important from the perspective of forensic chemistry, including benzodiazepines, antidepressants, carbamazepine, cocaine, and their selected metabolites, was investigated for 1 month in two alternative biological matrices, vitreous humor and liver homogenate. Three different thermal storage conditions (-20, 4, and 20 °C) were tested. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis was preceded by an effective solid-phase microextraction (SPME) procedure. The results were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA to find significant concentration variations over time. The results obtained allowed for dividing the analytes into four groups: stable under all tested conditions, only at -20 and 4 °C, only at 20 °C, and overall unstable. Nordiazepam, venlafaxine, and cocaine and its metabolites turned out to be the most unstable substances, while fluoxetine showed the highest storage stability in both matrices. The SPME/LC-MS method was comprehensively evaluated according to the principles of white analytical chemistry (WAC), which reconcile the greenness and functionality of the method. A close to 100% whiteness score proves its sustainability and suitability for the intended application.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze near-term cerebroplacental Doppler, heart morphology, and neonatal biometry in isolated hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) relative to healthy controls. METHODS: This retrospective study included 55 fetuses with HLHS (29 with mitral valve stenosis [MS]/aortic valve atresia [AA], 14 with MS/aortic valve stenosis, and 12 with mitral valve atresia [MA]/[AA]) diagnosed prenatally between 2010 and 2019 at 2 referral centers and 101 healthy controls. Ultrasound assessment included umbilical artery (UA), middle cerebral artery (MCA) pulsatility index (PI), and cerebroplacental ratio (CPR), with neonatal weight, length, head circumference (HC), Apgar score, and UA pH measured at birth. RESULTS: In total, 32.7% of HLHS fetuses had abnormal MCA-PI and UA-PI, and 38.2% had CPRs below the fifth percentile before birth. All tested Doppler parameters differed from those of the healthy controls (P ≤ .01). Birth weight and length were comparable between HLHS and control fetuses, whereas birth HCs were smaller in the HLHS group than in the control group (P = .018). In both groups, increased UA-PI correlated with lower birth weight, but only HLHS fetuses with UA-PI > the 95th percentile had a lower median HC at birth than those with normal UA-PI (P = .045). The median UA-PI percentile was higher in fetuses with MA than in fetuses with MS (P = .015). The ascending aortic diameter correlated with birth weight (P = .036) and birth length (P = .039). CONCLUSION: Abnormal cerebroplacental hemodynamics are evident in a high percentage of near-term fetuses with HLHS, and increased placental resistance may contribute to birth weight and HC. Moreover, heart morphology may impact placental circulation and neonatal biometry.

Epidemiological studies have shown the presence of triclosan (TCS) in the brain due to its widespread use as an antibacterial ingredient. One of the confirmed mechanisms of its action is the interaction with the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR). In nerve cells, sirtuins (Sirt1 and Sirt3) act as cellular sensors detecting energy availability and modulate metabolic processes. Moreover, it has been found that Sirt1 inhibits the activation of estrogen receptors, regulates the androgen receptor, and may interact with the AhR receptor. It is also known that Sirt3 stimulates the production of estradiol (E2) via the estradiol receptor ß (Erß). Therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of TCS alone or in combination with synthetic flavonoids on the production of neurosteroids such as progesterone (P4), testosterone (T), and E2 in primary neural cortical neurons in vitro. The contribution of Sirt1 and Sirt3 as well as AhR to these TCS-induced effects was investigated as well. The results of the experiments showed that both short and long exposure of neurons to TCS increased the expression of the Sirt1 and Sirt3 proteins in response to AhR stimulation. After an initial increase in the production of all tested neurosteroids, TCS acting for a longer time lowered their levels in the cells. This suggests that TCS activating AhR as well as Sirt1 and Sirt3 in short time intervals stimulates the levels of P4, T, and E2 in neurons, and then the amount of neurosteroids decreases despite the activation of AhR and the increase in the expression of the Sirt1 and Sirt3 proteins. The use of both the AhR agonist and antagonist prevented changes in the expression of Sirt1, Sirt3, and AhR and the production of P4, T, and E2, which confirmed that this receptor is a key in the mechanism of the TCS action.

The main objective of this study was to develop a test for the fast and noninvasive prediagnosis of mood disorders based on the noninvasive analysis of hair samples. The database included 75 control subjects (who were not diagnosed with depression) and 40 patients diagnosed with mood disorders such as depression or bipolar disorder. Both women and men, aged 18-65 years, participated in the research. After taking the hair samples, they were washed (methanol-water-methanol by shaking in a centrifuge for two min) and air-dried in a fume hood. Each hair collection was analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy attenuated total reflection (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. Subsequently, the results obtained were analyzed based on chemometric methods: hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA). As a results of the research conducted, potential differences were noticed. There was a visible change in the spectra intensity at around 2800-3100 cm-1 and smaller differences around 1460 cm-1; the bands can be assigned to protein vibrations. However, these are preliminary studies that provide a good basis for the development of a test for the initial diagnosis of mood disorders.

Triclosan (TCS) is commonly used worldwide in a range of personal care and sanitizing products. A number of studies have revealed the presence of TCS in human tissues. It has recently been shown that TCS can interact with AhR in mouse neurons and the one of its effects is the stimulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Reactive oxygen species perform a wide spectrum of functions in neuronal cells, where they are generated as by-products of cellular metabolism. Therefore the aim of the study was to investigate effects of two synthetic naphthoflavones, the beta-naphthoflavone (ßNF) and alpha-naphthoflavone (αNF), well known agonist and antagonist of AhR on TCS-stimulated cytotoxicity, apoptosis and ROS production in mouse primary cortical neurons in vitro cultures. The results showed that both agonist (ßNF) and antagonist (αNF) of AhR enhanced the LDH release and caspase-3 activity stimulated by TCS. Interestingly, both naphthoflavones decreased the TCS-stimulated ROS production, however, they showed no scavenging properties as revealed by ABTS•+ and DPPH• methods. What's more, both ßNF as well as αNF inhibited the activity of xanthine oxidase (XO) stimulated by TCS. Thus, we can assume that αNF or ßNF act in a competitive way over TCS and inhibit its effect on antioxidant enzyme activity.

RATIONALE: The Direct Probe Mass Spectrometry (DIPMS) method allows successful analysis of powders, solid and liquid samples. The potential of direct surface analysis could find further application in the examination of surfaces with good absorption properties such as Dried Blood Spot (DBS) cards that constitute a great alternative to the classical blood collection method directly from veins. METHODS: DIPMS was performed with the ionization carried out under atmospheric pressure in an Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization source. Direct analysis of diazepam solutions in methanol and after their deposition onto a DBS card was conducted. Subsequently, images of the DBS cards with and without blood samples were acquired using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). RESULTS: Direct quantitative analysis of diazepam liquid samples by DIPMS was successfully performed. Linear correlation between the concentration of diazepam and the peak intensity with a R2 coefficient of 0.937 was obtained. However, the method failed when the analysis was conducted directly from the surface of the DBS cards and no diazepam peak was observed in the mass spectrum. The SEM images confirmed the good absorption properties of DBS cards and the absence of blood components on the surface. CONCLUSIONS: DIPMS is an excellent technique for the rapid, direct analysis of powders, solid and liquid samples; however, the potential of the method is limited when samples are deposited on surfaces with good absorption properties such as DBS cards.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a new computer-based technique to isolate the shape of the fetal palate visible in the midsagittal plane from static ultrasound images routinely used to measure nuchal translucency. METHOD: This is a retrospective interpretation of images of the midsagittal view of the fetal face at 11 to 13 (+6) weeks of gestation in 7 cases of cleft lip and palate (CLP) and 7 normal controls. The images were subjected to pattern analysis. RESULTS: Proprietary software was applied and for each CLP case, and palatine bones with different forms from those of fetuses in the control group were recorded. In 4 cases, an image of a continuous palatine bone was observed at a threshold of 180, whereas the remaining 3 images were obtained at 128. A continuous palatine bone structure was not observed in any fetus from the CLP group, even at a level of 128, when the surrounding structures were visible. CONCLUSION: The application of pattern analysis to a 2D frozen image is a new approach for prenatal diagnostics. This technique may be a helpful tool for physicians and could assist in the diagnosis of cleft palate.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze a population of fetuses with prenatally diagnosed right aortic arch (RAA). METHODS: Retrospective study of fetuses with RAA diagnosed prenatally between 2011 and 2015 in two referral centers. RESULTS: Right aortic arch was found in 4.4% (46/1036) of fetuses with cardiovascular abnormalities (CVA). As an isolated anomaly, RAA was present in 30.4% of cases; in 32.6%, other CVA were detected; in 23.9%, CVA and extracardiac anomalies; and in 13.1%, only extracardiac malformations. The most common noncardiac abnormalities were thymus hypoplasia/aplasia (7/17), of which six had deletion 22q.11.2. In another three fetuses, trisomy 21 was present. One intrauterine fetal death occurred at 41 weeks of pregnancy, and two fetuses died after birth. In six of 18 infants with known follow-up, symptoms of dysphagia were reported, of which four infants underwent surgical intervention. In 12 infants, an isolated RAA was clinically silent. CONCLUSIONS: The diagnosis of RAA is an indication for a detailed examination of cardiac and noncardiac structures, including the thymus. It is advisable to consider genetic testing, together with the assessment of deletion 22q11.2, especially in the case of accompanying defects. The prognosis depends on underlying cardiac and extracardiac anomalies and possibly coexisting genetic defects. Isolated anomalies are asymptomatic. © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Huntington's disease (HD) affects both neurons and astrocytes. To target the latter and to ensure brain-wide transgene expression, adeno-associated viral (AAV) vectors can be administered intravenously, as AAV vectors cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and enable preferential transduction of astrocytes due to their close association with blood vessels. However, there is a possibility that the subclass of GFAP-expressing astrocytes performs a distinct role in HD and reacts differently to therapeutic measures than the rest of the astrocytes. The gfaABC1D promoter allows specific targeting of the GFAP-expressing astrocytes (~25% of S100ß-expressing astrocytes). We have examined the expression of three different transgenes (GCaMP6f, Kir4.1 and GLT1) and tested the effects of the AAV serotypes 9 and rh8. The AAV vectors were injected into the tail vein of 1-year-old homozygous Z-Q175-KI HD mice and their wild-type (WT) littermates. At this age, HD mice exhibit motor symptoms, including pronounced hypokinesia and circling behaviour. The expression times ranged from 3 to 6weeks. The target cell population was defined as the cells expressing S100ß in addition to GFAP. Viewfields in the dorsal striatum and the overlaying cortex were evaluated and the transduction rate was defined as the percentage of target cells that expressed the reporter transgene (enhanced green fluorescent protein, EGFP, or Tomato). In all cases, the transduction rate was higher in the cortex than in the striatum. AAV9 was more efficient than AAVrh8. One of the injected constructs (AAV9-gfaABC1D-GLT1-Tomato) was tested for the first time. GLT1, the principal astrocytic glutamate transporter, is deficient in HD and therefore considered as a potential target for gene therapy. At a dose of 1.86×1011 vector genome (vg) per animal, the fraction of GLT1-Tomato+ cells in the striatum and the cortex amounted to 30% and 49%, respectively. In individual Tomato+ HD astrocytes, treatment with the GLT1 vector increased the level of GLT1 immunofluorescence by 21% compared to the HD control. The described approach offers new and interesting opportunities to examine the pathophysiological consequences of brain-wide transgene expression in a specific astrocyte subpopulation.

Triclosan (TCS) is an antimicrobial agent that is used extensively in personal care and in sanitizing products, such as soaps, toothpastes, and hair products. A number of studies have revealed the presence of TCS in human tissues, such as fat, liver and brain, in addition to blood and breast milk. The aim of the present study was to investigate the impact of TCS on AhR and Cyp1a1/Cyp1b1 signaling in mouse neocortical neurons in primary cultures. In addition to the use of selective ligands and siRNAs, expression levels of mRNA and proteins as well as caspase-3 activity, reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release have been measured. We also studied the involvement of the AhR in TCS-induced LDH release and caspase-3 activation as well as the effect of TCS on ROS generation. Cultures of neocortical neurons were prepared from Swiss mouse embryos on day 15/16 of gestation. The cells were cultured in phenol red-free Neurobasal medium with B27 and glutamine, and the neurons were exposed to 1 and 10µM TCS. Our experiments showed that the expression of AhR and Cyp1a1 mRNA decreased in cells exposed to 10µM TCS for 3 or 6h. In the case of Cyp1b1, mRNA expression remained unchanged compared with the control group following 3h of exposure to TCS, but after 6h, the mRNA expression of Cyp1b1 was decreased. Our results confirmed that the AhR is involved in the TCS mechanism of action, and our data demonstrated that after the cells were transfected with AhR siRNA, the cytotoxic and pro-apoptotic properties of TCS were decreased. The decrease in Cyp1a1 mRNA and protein expression levels accompanied by a decrease in its activity. The stimulation of Cyp1a1 activity produced by the application of an AhR agonist (ßNF) was attenuated by TCS, whereas the addition of AhR antagonist (αNF) reversed the inhibitory effects of TCS. In our experiments, TCS diminished Cyp1b1 mRNA and enhanced its protein expression. In case of Cyp1a1 we observed paradoxical effect of TCS action, which caused the decrease in activity and protein expression of Cyp1a1 and the increase in protein level of AhR. Therefore, we determined the effects of TCS on the production of ROS. Our results revealed that TCS increased the production of ROS and that this effect of TCS was reversed by 10µM N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), the ROS scavenger. To confirm an involvement of ROS in TCS-induced neurotoxicity we measured AhR, Cyp1a1, and Cyp1b1 mRNA expression levels in cells co-treated with TCS and NAC. In the presence of NAC, TCS enhanced mRNA expression of the cytochromes and AhR at 3 and 6h, respectively. We postulate that TCS exhibits primary and secondary effects. The primary effects such as impairment of Cyp1a1 signaling are mediated by TCS-induced ROS production, whereas secondary effects of TCS are due to transcriptional activity of AhR and estrogenic properties of TCS.

The goal of the present study was to investigate the action of TBBPA on PPARγ protein expression in vitro in human choriocarcinoma-derived placental JEG-3 cells. We also analyzed TBBPA for its action on placental secretion of progesterone and ß-hCG, cell viability, and apoptosis. Our results showed that after TBBPA treatment at 10 nM and 10 µM, PPARγ protein expression increased in a time-dependent manner until 48 h and then slightly decreased at 72 h but was still above the control level. This alteration in PPARγ protein expression was accompanied by a decreased ß-hCG level. Interestingly, co-treatment with the PPARγ antagonist GW9662 reversed the TBBPA-mediated changes in PPARγ protein expression but, according to ß-hCG secretion, potentiated an inhibitory effect of TBBPA. Additionally, in our study, we assessed the ability of TBBPA to increase progesterone levels in JEG-3 cells compared with those of controls. Finally, in the present study, we demonstrated that TBBPA at all of the tested doses significantly increased caspase-3 activity compared with that of the vehicle control. The apoptotic action of TBBPA was also confirmed by Hoechst 33342 staining. These results showed the up-regulation of PPARγ protein expression after TBBPA exposure in human placental cells. Although co-treatment with antagonist of PPARγ reversed the TBBPA-mediated increase in this protein expression and restored it to the control level, it did not reverse the effect on ß-hCG secretion. This indicated that the mechanism of TBBPA-induced changes in ß-hCG secretion is PPARγ-independent.

Whiplash injuries, also known as neck sprains and strains, are currently some of the most common injuries of the cervical spine. Mechanism of injury is still controversial and current treatment methods do not provide satisfactory results. In this article we present QTF classification of related disorders, epidemiological data and treatment methods. We described basic principles of using a soft collar, goals and effects of collar use and potential complications ensuing from immobilization. Authors reviewed publications comparing the effects of collar use with other methods of treatment and physiotherapy following whiplash injury.

BACKGROUND Lung cancer is the most common malignant neoplasm diagnosed worldwide. Early diagnosis and treatment are of great importance for patient's prognosis. A wide variety of pulmonary conditions display clinical and radiological presentation similar to that of lung cancer, and the awareness of their existence can help in making correct diagnoses. CASE REPORT This article presents a description of 4 patients with an insidious type of lesions mimicking pulmonary carcinomas. The first patient was referred to Department with a tumor-like lesion in the right lung. After CT of the chest and core-needle biopsy, the lesion turned out to be an ectopic thyroid tissue. The second patient reported a dry cough and weight loss. A lung nodule mass was revealed in chest CT and the patient was diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculoma. The remaining 2 patients, despite the suspicion of lung cancer, were subsequently diagnosed with a post-traumatic pleural hematoma and diffuse large B cell lymphoma. CONCLUSIONS Low-dose computed tomography of the chest plays a significant role in the diagnosis of newly detected lesions in the lungs. However, due to the similarity of the image of cancer to that of other diseases, the ultimate diagnosis should be based on the interpretation of full imaging diagnostic tests, clinical presentation, and histopathological examination of the material obtained from the lesion. Analysis of cases enables us to expand our understanding of the diseases that need to be considered in differential diagnosis of a patient with a detected tumor-like lesion in the lungs.

Amorfrutin B is a selective PPARγ modulator that we demonstrated to be a promising neuroprotective compound in cellular models of stroke and perinatal asphyxia. Although neuronal mechanisms of amorfrutin B-evoked neuroprotection have been identified, none of them reflects the actions of the compound on microglia, which play a pivotal role in brain response to hypoxia/ischemia. Here, we provide evidence for amorfrutin B-induced effects on human microglia subjected to hypoxia/ischemia; the compound counteracts inflammation, and influences mitochondrial status and proliferation potential in a PPARγ-dependent manner. Post-treatment with amorfrutin B decreased the IBA1 fluorescence intensity, reduced caspase-1 activity, and downregulated IL1B/IL-1ß and TNFA but not IL10/IL-10 expression, which was upregulated. Amorfrutin B also stimulated PPARγ signaling, as evidenced by increased mRNA and/or protein levels of PPARγ and PGC1α. In addition, amorfrutin B reversed the hypoxia/ischemia-evoked effects on mitochondria-related parameters, such as mitochondrial membrane potential, BCL2/BCL2 expression and metabolic activity, which were correlated with diminished proliferation potential of microglia. Interestingly, the inhibitory effect of amorfrutin B on the proliferation potential and mitochondrial function of microglia is opposite to the stimulatory effect of amorfrutin B on mouse neuronal survival, as evidenced by increased neuronal viability and reduced neurodegeneration. In summary, this study showed for the first time that amorfrutin B compromises hypoxia/ischemia-induced activation of human microglia in a PPARγ-dependent manner, which involves inhibiting inflammation, normalizing mitochondrial status, and controlling proliferation potential. These data extend the protective potential of amorfrutin B in the pharmacotherapy of hypoxic/ischemic brain injury, targeting not only neurons but also activated microglia.

The establishment of the fetomaternal interface depends on precisely regulated communication between the conceptus and the uterine environment. Recent evidence suggests that microRNAs (miRNAs) may play an important role in embryo-maternal dialogue. This study aimed to determine the expression profile of endometrial miRNAs during days 26-28 of equine pregnancy. Additionally, the study aimed to predict target genes for differentially expressed miRNAs (DEmiRs) and their potential role in embryo attachment, adhesion, and implantation. Using next-generation sequencing, we identified 81 DEmiRs between equine endometrium during the pre-attachment period of pregnancy (day 26-28) and endometrium during the mid-luteal phase of the estrous cycle (day 10-12). The identified DEmiRs appear to have a significant role in regulating the expression of genes that influence cell fate and properties, as well as endometrial receptivity formation. These miRNAs include eca-miR-21, eca-miR-126-3p, eca-miR-145, eca-miR-451, eca-miR-491-5p, members of the miR-200 family, and the miRNA-17-92 cluster. The target genes predicted for the identified DEmiRs are associated with ion channel activity and sphingolipid metabolism. Furthermore, it was noted that the expression of mucin 1 and leukemia inhibitory factor, genes potentially regulated by the identified DEmiRs, was up-regulated at day 26-28 of pregnancy. This suggests that miRNAs may play a role in regulating specific genes to create a favorable uterine environment that is necessary for proper attachment, adhesion, and implantation of the embryo in mares.

The COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to many changes in the medical practice, including a wider access to tele-consultations. It not only influenced the type of treatment but also shed light on mistakes often made by doctors, such as the abuse of antibiotics. This study aimed to evaluate the antibiotic treatment, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on antibiotic prescribing during a GP's visit. The retrospective medical history analysis involved data from a first-contact medical center (Pantamed, Olsztyn, Poland), from 1 January 2018 to 31 May 2023. Quantities of prescribed antibiotics were assessed and converted into the so-called active list for a given working day of adult patients (> 18 years of age). Statistical analysis based on collective data was performed. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a decline in the number of medical consultations has been observed, both remotely via tele-medicine and in personal appointments, compared to the data from before the pandemic: n = 95,251 versus n = 79,619. Also, during the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a decrease in the total amount of prescribed antibiotics relative to the data before the pandemic (2.44 vs. 4.54; p > 0.001). The decrease in the quantities of prescribed antibiotics did not depend on the way doctor consultations were provided. The COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to changing the family doctors' management of respiratory infections. The ability to identify the etiological agent-the SARS-COV2 virus-contributed to the reduction of the antibiotics use.
