AIM: To determine the differences in clinicopathological and mammographic findings between ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and ductal carcinoma in situ with micro-invasion (DCIS-MI) and explore clinicopathological and mammographic factors associated with DCIS-MI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All DCIS patients with or without micro-invasion who underwent preoperative mammography at The Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University from January 2016 through June 2020 were identified retrospectively. The correlations of clinicopathological findings with DCIS-MI were evaluated using univariate and multivariate binary logistic regression analyses. Imaging findings were compared between the groups by using the Pearson chi-square test. RESULTS: A total of 445 DCIS lesions and 151 DCIS-MI lesions were included in the final analysis. Large extent (≥2.7 cm), high nuclear grade, comedo-type, negative progesterone receptor (PR), negative oestrogen receptor (ER), high Ki-67 and axillary lymph node metastasis were more frequently found in DCIS-MI than in DCIS (all p<0.05), and the first four of these were found to be independent predictors of DCIS-MI in the multivariate analysis (all p<0.05). Regarding imaging findings, compared to DCIS, DCIS-MI showed fewer occult lesions and more lesions with calcifications in mass, asymmetry, and architectural distortion (p=0.004). Grouped calcifications were usually associated with DCIS, while regional calcifications were commonly found in DCIS-MI (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Large extent, high nuclear grade, comedo-type and negative PR were found to be independent predictors of DCIS-MI. Lesions with calcifications and regional calcifications were more likely associated with DCIS-MI on mammography.

RESUMO

Talent training is the core and foundation of public health system construction. Shortage of talents in the field of disease prevention and public health exposed by COVID-19 pandemic highlights the importance of developing preventive medical education. This article analyzes the challenges of medical education in the dilemma of "separation of medical treatment and prevention", and the new requirements for preventive medical education in the construction of New Medicine under the Healthy China strategy. Four aspects including stepping up the resource allocation and investment, educating responsible public health professionals, the education of all medical students who implement the core competence of public health, and the establishment of a continuing education system for preventive medicine have been considered. A series of specific suggestions are put forward including the establishment of a full-chain closed-loop research system to support the cultivation of top-notch innovative public health talents, strengthening the assessment of core public health capabilities for clinical medical professional admission, formulating a "medical and preventive integration" training program for primary health personnel, and implementing "combination of peace and war" public health personnel reserve system, with the purpose of providing reference for the reform and development of preventive medical education in China.

Objective: To investigate the expression and clinicopathological significance of high mobility group box protein B1 (HMGB1) protein in breast cancer. Methods: The expression of HMGB1 protein in 26 normal breast tissues and 417 invasive breast cancer tissues diagnosed at Dongyang People's Hospital, Zhejiang Province from 2016 to 2018 were detected by immunohistochemical EnVision method. The relationship between nuclear and cytoplasmic HMGB1 protein expression and clinicopathologic features of breast cancer patients were analyzed. Results: The nuclear and cytoplasmic expression of HMGB1 protein was 80.8% (337/417) and 16.8% (70/417) respectively in breast cancer, and was 46.2%(12/26) and 0(0/26) respectively in normal breast tissue. Both nuclear and cytoplasmic expression of HMGB1 protein in breast cancer were significantly higher than normal breast tissue (P<0.001, P=0.046, respectively). The nuclear expression of HMGB1 protein was also higher in high grade, estrogen receptor (ER) negative, progesterone receptor (PR) negative (P=0.006, P=0.004, P<0.001, respectively); whereas the cytoplasmic expression of HMGB1 protein was also higher in high grade, estrogen receptor (ER) negative, progesterone receptor (PR) negative (P<0.001 in all) breast cancers. Multivariate logistic regression model showed that nuclear HMGB1 expression correlated with histologic grade (OR=2.188, 95%CI=1.078-4.443, P=0.030), while cytoplasmic HMGB1 expression correlated with histologic grade (OR=3.031, 95%CI=1.600-5.742, P=0.001), ER (OR=0.129, 95%CI=0.034-0.494, P=0.003) and TNM staging (OR=3.820, 95%CI=1.042-14.001, P=0.043). Multivariate analysis of Cox proportional hazard model showed that nuclear HMGB1 expression was an independent risk factor for the overall survival of breast cancer patients (HR=0.366, 95%CI=0.138-0.972, P=0.044). Conclusion: Nuclear and cytoplasmic HMGB1 proteins are related to multiple poor prognostic factors in breast cancer, and may be a potential biomarker for breast cancer treatment.

Objective: To study the correlations between the distance stereoacuity and the levels of control at different far distance fixations in children with intermittent exotropia. Methods: In this prospective, non-interventional case series study, 52 children with intermittent exotropia (basic, divergence excess and pseudo-divergence excess types, exodeviation angles≥15 PD) admitted to the Shandong Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Shandong University for surgery between August 2014 and March 2015 were enrolled. The distance stereoacuity was tested with the distance Randot stereotest, and the control of exodeviation was assessed at outdoor far distance fixation of 50 m, indoor far distance fixation of 30 m, and indoor distance fixation of 3 m, respectively, using the office-based 6-point control scale proposed by Mohney and Holmes. The distance stereoacuity and control scores of every intermittent exotropia child were tested 3-4 times in a single day with an interval of at least 2 hours. Nonparametric Spearman rank method was used to analyze the correlations between distance stereoacuity and levels of control at three different far distances in children with intermittent exotropia. Results: The mean age of 52 enrolled children (26 males, 26 females) was 7 years (range, 5-12 years), and 192 groups of distance stereoacuity and control scores were got for the 52 children. Positive correlations between the distance stereoacuity and the levels of control at outdoor far distance fixation of 50 m, indoor far distance fixation of 30 m, and indoor distance fixation of 3 m were observed (coefficients of correlations; r=0.489, 0.472, 0.282, all P<0.001). Conclusion: There are correlations between the distance stereoacuity and the levels of control at outdoor far distance fixation of 50 m, indoor far distance fixation of 30 m and indoor distance fixation of 3 m in children with intermittent exotropia, and the former two are found to be stronger than the latter one. Transition-metal oxides have fascinating characteristics, and have been exploited for various applications, such as Mott transistors, optical switches and strain sensors, etc. Vanadium dioxide is a special and important transition-metal oxide, and exhibits the significant behavior of metal-insulator transition. In this work, single crystalline VO2(A) nanowires have been synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. Due to the size and surface effects, the nanowires with different widths show great disparities in their hysteresis loops, phase transition temperatures and electrical conductivities. Our results show that the phase transition temperature is linearly dependent on the inverse of the nanowire widths, and a similar relationship between the electrical conductivity and the width of the nanowires has also been found. More interestingly, the first-order phase transition of the nanowire even coverts into high-order continuous phase transition when the width is below a critical size. To explore the intrinsic influence of the size and surface effects, the analysis of the transmission electron microscopy measurements showed that the rough surface structure of the nanowire is very different to the internal structure, and the thickness of this rough surface structure almost remains unchanged as the with of the nanowire decreases. Our results indicated that the surface structure has a remarkable effect on the phase transition characteristics decreasing nanowire width, and the suitable heterogeneous nucleation originating from the rough surface structure should play a crucial role in properties of the VO2(A) nanowires. Size-dependent phase transition features of the VO2(A) nanowires also suggest that the size and surface effects must be taken into consideration when designing VO2 nanodevices.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the presence, biological features, and clinical significance of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) in breast cancer patients. METHODS: Eighty-four cases of breast cancer, 37 cases of benign breast tumor and 21 cases of healthy individuals were included in this study. Samples of peripheral blood (2 ml) were collected, and in the breast cancer patients, blood samples were taken both before and after treatment. Flow cytometry using anti-CD11b, CD33, CD14 and HLA-DR antibody was conducted to identify the unique membrane markers of MDSCs, and statistical analysis was performed to explore the relationship between MDSCs and clinical factors. Cell isolation and in vitro assay were used to test T cell function. RESULTS: CD11b(+) CD33(+) CD14(-) MDSCs were present in the blood of breast cancer patients, and these MDSCs were histologically of mononuclear cells. Cell proliferation assay confirmed that MDSCs inhibited proliferation of homologous T cells in vitro. MDSCs levels in patients with breast cancer, benign disease and the health control were (15.93±3.17)%, (8.92±4.42)% and (5.02±2.75)%, respectively, with a statistically significant difference (P<0.001) between breast cancer patients and the other subjects (patients with benign lesions and healthy controls). The expression level of MDSCs in patients with breast cancer was associated with surgical treatment, but not with age, disease stage, lymph node metastasis, ER or PR expression. MDSCs levels were significantly lower in post-operative patients[(7.83±3.78) %] than the (15.37±2.49) % in patients before surgery (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study demonstrate that MDSCs are present in the peripheral blood of breast cancer patients and the level of MDSCs is associated with surgical treatment. Our findings suggest that CD11b(+) CD33(+) CD14(-) MDSCs are likely involved in breast cancer initiation and development, and may become a novel biomarker to facilitate diagnosis and to predict clinical outcomes of breast cancer.

Low-tannin sorghum is an excellent energy source in pig diets. However, sorghum contains several anti-nutritional factors that may have negative effects on nutrient digestibility. The impacts of proteases on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, blood parameters, and gut microbiota of growing pigs fed sorghum-based diets were studied in this study. Ninety-six pigs (20.66 ± 0.65 kg BW) were allocated into three groups (eight pens/group, four pigs/pen): (1) CON (control diet, sorghum-based diet included 66.98% sorghum), (2) PRO1 (CON + 200 mg/kg proteases), (3) PRO2 (CON + 400 mg/kg proteases) for 28 d. No differences were observed in growth performance and apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of nutrients between CON and PRO1 groups. Pigs fed PRO2 diet had increased (P < 0.05) BW on d 21 and 28, and increased (P < 0.05) average daily gain during d 14-21 and the overall period compared with pigs fed CON diet. In addition, pigs fed PRO2 diet had improved (P < 0.05) ATTD of gross energy, CP, and DM compared with pigs fed CON and PRO1 diets. Pigs fed PRO2 diet had lower (P < 0.05) plasma globulin (GLB) level and higher (P < 0.05) plasma glucose, albumin (ALB) and immunoglobulin G levels, and ALB/GLB ratio than pigs fed CON and PRO1 diets. Furthermore, pigs fed PRO2 diet had decreased (P < 0.05) the relative abundance of Acidobacteriota at the phylum level and increased (P < 0.05) the relative abundance of Prevotella_9 at the genus level. The linear discriminant analysis effect size analysis also showed that pigs fed PRO2 diet had significantly enriched short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria, such as Subdoligranulum and Parabacteroides. In conclusion, protease supplementation at 400 mg/kg improved the growth performance of growing pigs fed sorghum-based diets, which may be attributed to the improvement of nutrient digestibility, host metabolism, immune status and associated with the altered gut microbiota profiles.

BACKGROUND: Treatments for autoimmune blistering diseases have significant risk of medical complications and quality of life impacts during treatment, and it is difficult to differentiate these impacts from disease burden or the effects of treatment. OBJECTIVES: To develop a quality of life instrument specific to the effects of treatments used in patients with autoimmune bullous disease (AIBD). METHODS: A comprehensive item generation process was used to build a 45-item pilot Autoimmune Bullous Disease Quality of Life (ABQOL) questionnaire, distributed to 70 patients with AIBD. Experts in bullous disease refined the pilot ABQOL, selecting only those questions pertaining to the treatment effects. This pilot Treatment of Autoimmune Bullous Disease Quality of Life (TABQOL) questionnaire was administered to 70 patients, before factor analysis was performed to yield the final questionnaire of 17 questions. Validity and reliability were evaluated across a range of indices. RESULTS: Face and content validity were established through a comprehensive patient interview process, expert review and summaries of treatments used. The questionnaire was found to have appropriate correlation with the Dermatology Life Quality Index (r = 0.64) and the level of treatments used (P < 0.01), and was found to be responsive to overall variations in treatment burden. The TABQOL was also found to be a reliable instrument as evaluated by internal consistency (Cronbach α = 0.892) and test-retest reliability (r = 0.99). CONCLUSIONS: We have shown that the TABQOL questionnaire is a valid and reliable instrument that may to be used to measure treatment burden in AIBD and serve as an end point in clinical trials.

AIM: To study the predictive value of plasma galectin-3 in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with CHF (New York Heart Association functional class II-IV) caused by coronary heart disease were recruited. The levels of plasma galectin-3 and NT-proBNP were measured by enzyme-linked immuno sorbent assay. Echocardiography was performed to determine the diastolic left atrial diameter (LAD), left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD) and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to analyze the prognostic value of galectin-3 or NT-proBNP for CHF. RESULTS: The level of galectin-3 was significantly higher in NYHA functional class III and IV compared with that in control (p < 0.05 and p < 0.01, respectively). The level of plasma galectin-3 was positively correlated with LAD (r = 0.271, p < 0.05) and LVEDD (r = 0.480, p < 0.01), but negatively correlated with LVEF (r = -0.683, p < 0.01). The level of plasma NT-proBNP was positively correlated with LAD (r = 0.481, p < 0.01) and LVEDD (r = 0.270, p < 0.05), but negatively correlated with LVEF (r = -0.516, p < 0.01). AUC was 0.798 when the level of plasma galectin-3 was more than 7.52 ng/ml. The sensitivity to predict CHF was 62.9%, and the specificity was 90%. AUC was 0.901 when the level of plasma NT-proBNP was more than 1143 pg/ml. The sensitivity to predict CHF was 92.8% and the specificity was 85%. CONCLUSIONS: The level of plasma galectin-3 is related to the changes of left ventricular structure and function, indicating that galectin-3 may have been involved in the process of left ventricular remodeling in CHF. The specificity of galectin-3 to predict CHF is higher than NT-proBNP, but not the sensitivity.

PCR and hybridization assays are widely used for the detection and identification of Escherichia coli serogroups and serotypes. We used these techniques for the detection of E. coli O157:H7, a dominant serogroup among E. coli strains that are considered major public health problems worldwide. We developed a quantitative PCR assay using SYBR Green I, based on the published sequences of the rfbE and fliC genes from E. coli O157:H7. This method detected the E. coli O157:H7 O somatic antigen gene and the flagellar antigen gene simultaneously, with good specificity, sensitivity, and repeatability. The sensitivity of the assay was 2.95 x 10 copies/µL, which is 10(3) times more sensitive than obtained with a conventional PCR. The intra-assay and inter-assay coefficients of variation were less than 2%. We concluded that this duplex quantitative PCR assay is adequate for the identification and quantitative analysis of E. coli O157:H7. This provides a new identification method for clinical diagnosis of E. coli O157:H7 and for food safety analysis, as well as for molecular epidemiological studies of foodborne diseases.

Recently, we demonstrated that two members of neurotrophins, nerve growth factor and brain-derived neurotrophic factor, and two types of receptor, tyrosine kinase A (TrkA) and tyrosine kinase (TrkB), exist in ejaculated bull spermatozoa, and play a crucial role in the normal function of spermatozoa. Neurotrophin-4 (NT-4) is another neurotrophic factor that signals predominantly through the TrkB receptor tyrosine kinase, and no reports of detection of NT-4 in spermatozoa have been published. In the present study, the presence of NT-4 in mature bull spermatozoa was investigated using RT-PCR, immunofluorescence and Western blotting. The result shows that there was no RT-PCR evidence for NT-4 transcripts in bovine spermatozoa. However, the NT-4 protein was present in bovine spermatozoa, and the NT-4 immunoreactivity was localized to the equatorial segment and midpiece of bovine spermatozoa. In addition, effects of NT-4 on function of spermatozoa were studied. Significant increased mitochondria activity of mature bovine spermatozoa was observed in response to 300 or 500 ng/ml exogenous NT-4 (p < 0.05), in comparison with the control, while addition of inhibitors (40 ng/ml k252α) specific for tyrosine protein kinase significantly blocked the increase of mitochondria activity. However, NT-4 had no effects on the viability or acrosome reaction of spermatozoa (p > 0.05). Consequently, this study provided evidence that NT-4 protein was presented in the mature bull spermatozoa and can influence the mitochondrial activity of bovine spermatozoa through TrkB tyrosine kinase-dependent pathways.

RESUMO

Carbapenem-resistant gram-negative bacilli (CR-GNB) colonization screening was initiated across high-risk departments (PICU, NICU, neonatal wards, and hematology departments) in January 2017, and several CR-GNB cohort and patient-placement strategies were introduced throughout the hospital in January 2018. The colonization and infection rates decreased to varying degrees from 2017 to 2021.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) adversely affects the number and function of circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs). Consequently, there is also a reduction in the repair mechanism of these cells, which is a critical and initiating factor in the development of diabetic vascular disease. The aim of the present study was to analyze miR expression profiles in EPCs from patients with DM and choose the most significantly regulated miR to study its possible role on EPC dysfunction and elucidate its mechanism of action. EPCs were collected from subjects with Type II DM and non-diabetic control subjects. Total RNA was harvested from EPCs, and a total of 5 candidate miRNAs were identified by microarray screening and were quantified by TaqMan real-time PCR. Lentiviral vectors expressing miR-126 and miR-126 inhibitor (anti-miR-126) were transfected into EPCs, and the EPC colony-forming capacity, proliferation activity, migratory activity, differentiation capacity, and apoptotic susceptibility were determined and Western Blotting and mRNA real-time PCR analyses were performed. To study the mechanisms, lentiviral vectors expressing Spred-1 and a short interfering RNA (siRNA) targeting Spred-1 were prepared. Five miRs were aberrantly downregulated in EPCs from DM patients. These miRs included miR-126, miR-21, miR-27a, miR-27b and miR-130a. Anti-miR-126 inhibited EPC proliferation, migration, and enhanced apoptosis. Restored miR-126 expression in EPCs from DM promoted EPC proliferation, migration, and inhibited EPC apoptosis ability. Despite this, miR-126 had no effect on EPC differentiation. miR-126 overexpression significantly downregulated Spred-1 in EPCs. The knockdown of Spred-1 expression in EPCs from DM promoted proliferation, migration, and inhibited apoptosis of the cells. The signal pathway of miR-126 effecting on EPCs is partially mediated through Ras/ERK/VEGF and PI3K/Akt/eNOS regulation. This study provides the first evidence that miR-126 is downregulated in EPCs from diabetic patients, and impairs EPCs-mediated function via its target, Spred-1, and through Ras/ERK/VEGF and PI3K/Akt/eNOS signal pathway.

To investigate the causes of the occurrence and persistence of porcine cystic follicles, we evaluated the apoptosis and proliferation of follicular cells in these cysts. Apoptotic frequencies were examined by TUNEL assay and the expression of apoptosis regulators (XIAP, bax, bc1-2 and caspase-3) by immunohistochemistry, Western blotting and real-time quantitative PCR; cell proliferation activity was evaluated by PCNA immunohistochemistry and proliferation of in vitro cultured granulosa and theca cells. The low apoptotic frequency and weak proliferative activity were found in cystic follicles. Low frequency of apoptosis might be associated with decreased amounts of apoptotic-related factors (bax and caspase-3) and increased amounts of anti-apoptotic factors (XIAP and bcl-2) in cystic follicles. Significantly lower proliferation activity was detected in granulosa and theca cells from cystic follicles, and lesser PCNA-positive cells were found in cystic follicles. Our results indicate that the programmed cell death and cell proliferation system were altered in cystic follicles. The disorder between apoptosis and proliferation was responsible for maintaining a static condition without degeneration, which leads to the long-term persistence of follicles. These findings provide important novel insights into the pathogenesis of follicular cysts in sows.

Objective: To investigate the effect of blocking P21 activated kinase 1 (PAK1) activity on the proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis of acute megakaryocytic leukemia (AMKL) cell lines (CHRF and CMK) . Methods: Cell counts were used to detect the effects of PAK1 inhibitors (IPA-3 and G5555) on AMKL cell proliferation inhibition and colony formation, and flow cytometry was used to detect its effects on AMKL cell cycle. The effect of PAK1 inhibitor on the expression of cyclin D1 and apoptosis-related protein Cleaved caspase 3 was detected using Western blot, while interference with the protein expression level of PAK1 in AMKL cells was assessed using lentivirus-mediated shRNA transfection technology. Flow cytometry was used to detect the effects of knockdown of PAK1 kinase activity on the ability of polyploid DNA formation and cell apoptosis in AMKL cells. Results: PAK1 inhibitors inhibited the proliferation of AMKL cells in a dose-dependent manner and reduced the ability of cell colony formation, and the difference was statistically significant when compared with the control group (P<0.05) . Moreover, they also reduced the percentage of AMKL cells in S phase, and Western blot detection showed that the expression levels of phosphorylated PAK1 and cyclin D1 decreased significantly. Finally, PAK1 inhibitors induced AMKL cell apoptosis by up-regulating Cleaved caspase 3 and showed different abilities to increase the content of polyploid DNA in megakaryocytes. Only high concentrations of IPA-3 and low doses of G5555 increased the number of polyploid megakaryocytes, while knockdown of PAK1 kinase activity promoted AMKL cell differentiation and increased the apoptosis rate. Conclusion: PAK1 inhibitor significantly arrests AMKL cell growth and promotes cell apoptosis. Knocking down the expression of PAK1 promotes the formation of polyploid DNA and induces AMKL cell apoptosis. The above findings indicate that inhibiting the activity of PAK1 may control AMKL effectively.

Objective: To explore the value of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) in the etiology diagnosis of bacterial meningitis in children. Methods: The etiological results of 189 children diagnosed with "bacterial meningitis" or "purulent meningitis" or "central nervous system infection" in the Children's Hospital of Fudan University from 1st January 2019 to 31st December 2020 were analyzed retrospectively. The cerebrospinal fluid (CFS) of the children with bacterial meningitis was detected by culture and mNGS respectively, and the difference of pathogen detection rate between the 2 methods was analyzed. According to the age at the time of visit, the children were divided into neonatal group (≤28 days of age) and non-neonatal group (>28 days of age), and χ2 test was used to compare the positive rate between the 2 groups. Taking CFS culture as the gold standard, the sensitivity and specificity of mNGS in the diagnosing of bacterial meningitis in children were analyzed. Results: Among these 189 children with bacterial meningitis, 116 were males and 73 were females. A total of 76 strains of pathogens were detected in blood and (or) CSF cultures, of which 50 strains (65.8%) were Gram-positive bacteria; among those, 18 strains (23.7%) of Streptococcus agalactiae, 17 strains (19.7%) of Escherichia coli and 15 strains (19.7%) of Streptococcus pneumoniae were detected with higher detection rate. The infection rate of Gram-positive bacteria in the non-neonatal group was higher than that in the neonatal group (76.0% (38/50) vs. 50.0% (13/26), χ2=5.24, P=0.020).The same CSF samples of 48 cases were tested by mNGS and culture at the same time, and the detection rate of mNGS was higher than that of CSF culture (20 cases (41.7%) vs. 12 cases (25.0%), χ2=16.45, P<0.001). The consistency of mNGS and culture results was 79.2% (38/48), and the same pathogen was detected in 11 children with both positive mNGS and CSF culture. Taking the results of CSF culture as the gold standard, the sensitivity of mNGS in the diagnosing of bacterial meningitis was 91.7%, and the specificity was 75.0%. Conclusions: The mNGS technology can improve the pathogen detection rate of bacterial meningitis in children, and has a high consistency with CSF culture. In suspected cases where the pathogen cannot be identified by traditional methods, CSF mNGS should be considered timely.

Objective: To summarize the management and short-term outcomes of neonates delivered by mothers infected with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant. Methods: A retrospective study was performed on 158 neonates born to mothers infected with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant admitted to the isolation ward of Children's Hospital of Fudan University from March 15th, 2022 to May 30th, 2022. The postnatal infection control measures for these neonates, and their clinical characteristics and short-term outcomes were analyzed. They were divided into maternal symptomatic group and maternal asymptomatic group according to whether their mothers had SARS-CoV-2 symptoms. The clinical outcomes were compared between the 2 groups using Rank sum test and Chi-square test. Results: All neonates were under strict infection control measures at birth and after birth. Of the 158 neonates, 75 (47.5%) were male. The gestational age was (38+3±1+3) weeks and the birth weight was (3 201±463)g. Of the neonates included, ten were preterm (6.3%) and the minimum gestational age was 30+1 weeks. Six neonates (3.8%) had respiratory difficulty and 4 of them were premature and required mechanical ventilation. All 158 neonates were tested negative for SARS-COV-2 nucleic acid by daily nasal swabs for the first 7 days. A total of 156 mothers (2 cases of twin pregnancy) infected with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant, the time from confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection to delivery was 7 (3, 12) days. Among them, 88 cases (56.4%) showed clinical symptoms, but none needed intensive care treatment. The peripheral white blood cell count of the neonates in maternal symptomatic group was significantly higher than that in maternal symptomatic group (23.0 (18.7, 28.0) × 109 vs. 19.6 (15.4, 36.6) × 109/L, Z=2.44, P<0.05). Conclusions: Neonates of mothers infected with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant during third trimester have benign short-term outcomes, without intrauterine infection through vertical transmission. Strict infection control measures at birth and after birth can effectively protect these neonates from SARS-CoV-2 infection.
