RESUMO

Background: Sepsis, characterized by life-threatening organ dysfunction, stems from an unregulated host response. Timely identification is pivotal for enhancing the prognosis of sepsis patients. Objective: This study aims to explore the diagnostic and prognostic values of alkaline phosphatase on the surface membrane of neutrophils (mNAP) in peripheral blood among sepsis patients. Design: The study employed a retrospective design. Setting: This study was conducted at Donghai County People's Hospital. Participants: A total of 180 sepsis patients were selected and categorized into the sepsis shock group (n=45) and the sepsis non-shock group (n=135). Additionally, 35 patients with non-infectious systemic inflammatory response syndrome served as the control group. Interventions: mNAP was assessed via flow cytometry, while serum procalcitonin (PCT) and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were measured through immunoassay. Primary Outcome Measures: (1) Changes in mNAP, PCT, and CRP. (2) Correlation of mNAP with CRP and PCT in sepsis patients. (3) Diagnostic values of mNAP, PCT, and CRP in sepsis. Results: Statistically significant differences in mNAP, PCT, and CRP were observed between the sepsis shock group, the sepsis non-shock group, and the control group (P = .000). The median value of mNAP (22627 Ab/c) in the 28-day death group was significantly higher than that (5100 Ab/c) in the survival group (P = .000). Spearman rank correlation analysis indicated a positive correlation between mNAP, PCT, and CRP in sepsis patients (P < .01). Conclusions: Both mNAP and PCT exhibit superior diagnostic specificity and sensitivity compared to CRP. While mNAP demonstrates similar sensitivity to PCT in diagnosing sepsis, its diagnostic specificity surpasses that of PCT. mNAP holds promise as a novel marker for the diagnosis and prognosis of sepsis.

RESUMO

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Researchers have delved into noninvasive diagnostic methods of renal fibrosis (RF) in chronic kidney disease, including ultrasound (US), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and radiomics. However, the value of these diagnostic methods in the noninvasive diagnosis of RF remains contentious. Consequently, the present study aimed to systematically delineate the accuracy of the noninvasive diagnosis of RF. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic search covering PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases for all data available up to 28 July 2023 was conducted for eligible studies. RESULTS: We included 21 studies covering 4885 participants. Among them, nine studies utilized US as a noninvasive diagnostic method, eight studies used MRI, and four articles employed radiomics. The sensitivity and specificity of US for detecting RF were 0.81 (95% CI: 0.76-0.86) and 0.79 (95% CI: 0.72-0.84). The sensitivity and specificity of MRI were 0.77 (95% CI: 0.70-0.83) and 0.92 (95% CI: 0.85-0.96). The sensitivity and specificity of radiomics were 0.69 (95% CI: 0.59-0.77) and 0.78 (95% CI: 0.68-0.85). CONCLUSIONS: The current early noninvasive diagnostic methods for RF include US, MRI, and radiomics. However, this study demonstrates that US has a higher sensitivity for the detection of RF compared to MRI. Compared to US, radiomics studies based on US did not show superior advantages. Therefore, challenges still exist in the current radiomics approaches for diagnosing RF, and further exploration of optimized artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms and technologies is needed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The analytical renal pathology system (ARPS) based on convolutional neural networks has been used successfully in native IgA nephropathy (IgAN) patients. Considering the similarity of pathologic features, we aim to evaluate the performance of the ARPS in allograft IgAN patients and broaden its implementation. METHODS: Biopsy-proven allograft IgAN patients from two different centers were enrolled for internal and external validation. We implemented the ARPS to identify glomerular lesions and intrinsic glomerular cells, and then evaluated its performance. Consistency between the ARPS and pathologists was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients. The association of digital pathological features with clinical and pathological data was measured. Kaplan-Meier survival curve and cox proportional hazards model were applied to investigate prognosis prediction. RESULTS: A total of 56 biopsy-proven allograft IgAN patients from the internal center and 17 biopsy-proven allograft IgAN patients from the external center were enrolled in this study. The ARPS was successfully applied to identify the glomerular lesions (F1-score, 0.696-0.959) and quantify intrinsic glomerular cells (F1-score, 0.888-0.968) in allograft IgAN patients rapidly and precisely. Furthermore, the mesangial hypercellularity score was positively correlated with all mesangial metrics provided by ARPS [Spearman's correlation coefficient (r), 0.439-0.472, and all p values < 0.001]. Besides, a higher allograft survival was noticed among patients in the high-level groups of the maximum and ratio of endothelial cells, as well as the maximum and density of podocytes. CONCLUSION: We propose that the ARPS could be implemented in future clinical practice with outstanding capability.

RESUMO

Here, we report a novel, feasible, and cost-effective method for the preparation of one-dimensional TiO2 nanowire arrays using a super-aligned carbon nanotube film as a template. Pure-anatase-phase TiO2 nanowires were scalably prepared in a suspended manner, and a high-performance ultraviolet (UV) photodetector was realized on a flexible substrate. The large surface area and one-dimensional nanostructure of the TiO2 nanowire array led to a high detectivity (1.35 × 1016 Jones) and an ultrahigh photo gain (2.6 × 104), respectively. A high photoresponsivity of 7.7 × 103 A/W was achieved under 7 µW/cm2 UV (λ = 365 nm) illumination at a 10 V bias voltage, which is much higher than those of commercial UV photodetectors. Additionally, by taking advantage of its anisotropic geometry, we found the TiO2 nanowire array showed polarized photodetection. The concept of using nanomaterial systems shows the potential for realization of nanostructured photodetectors for practical applications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Germline mosaicisms could be inherited to offspring, which considered as "de novo" in most cases. Paternal germline MECP2 mosaicism has been reported in fathers of girls with Rett syndrome (RTT) previously. For further study, we focused on MECP2 germline mosaicism in males, not only RTT fathers. METHODS: Thirty-two fathers of RTT girls with MECP2 pathogenic mutations and twenty-five healthy adult males without history and family history of RTT or other genetic disorders were recruited. Sperm samples were collected and ten MECP2 hotspot mutations were detected by micro-droplet digital PCR (mDDPCR). And routine semen test was performed at the same time if the sample was sufficient. Additionally, blood samples were also detected for those with sperm MECP2 mosaicisms. RESULTS: Nine fathers with RTT daughters (28.1%, 9/32) were found to have MECP2 mosaicism in their sperm samples, with the mutant allele fractions (MAFs) ranging from 0.05% to 7.55%. Only one father with MECP2 c.806delG germline mosaicism (MAF 7.55%) was found to have mosaicism in the blood sample, with the MAF was 0.28%. In the group of healthy adult males, MECP2 mosaicism was found in 7 sperm samples (28.0%, 7/25), with the MAFs ranging from 0.05% to 0.18%. None of the healthy adult males with MECP2 germline mosaicisms were found with MECP2 mosaicism in blood samples. There were no statistical differences in age, or the incidence of asthenospermia between fathers with RTT daughters and healthy adult males with MECP2 germline mosaicisms. Additionally, there was no linear correlation between MAFs of MECP2 mosaicisms and the age of males with germline MECP2 mosaicisms. CONCLUSIONS: Germline MECP2 mosaicism could be found not only in fathers with RTT daughters but also in healthy adult males without family history of RTT. As germline mosaic mutations may be passed on to offspring which commonly known as "de novo", more attention should be paid to germline mosaicism, especially in families with a proband diagnosed with genetic disorders.

RESUMO

The tumor microenvironment typically possesses immunosuppressive properties that hinder the effectiveness of antitumor immune responses, even in the context of immunotherapies. However, it is observed that pathogenic microorganisms can trigger strong immune responses during infection, offering a potential means to counteract the immunosuppressive environment of tumors. In this study, a protein nanocage called CpG@HBc nanocages (NCs) is developed, which mimics the structure of the hepatitis B virus and combines with an immunostimulatory component known as cytosine phosphoguanosine oligonucleotide (CpG). By delivering these immunostimulatory agents, CpG@HBc NCs are able to effectively reverse the suppressive tumor microenvironment, resulting in the inhibition of poorly immunogenic tumors in mice. Through high-dimensional mass cytometry (CyTOF) analysis, remarkable alterations in immune responses is observed induced by CpG@HBc. Treatment with immunogenic CpG@HBc NCs, along with co-injection of an OX40 agonist, sensitized colorectal cancer tumors to T cell immune responses, resulting in significant impairment of tumor growth and robust immune activation. Furthermore, CpG@HBc NCs induced long-term antitumor immunological memory, protecting tumor-cured mice from tumor rechallenge. Overall, these findings highlight the potential of a virus-inspired protein nanocage to mimic anti-viral immunity and offer a unique therapeutic approach for cancer immunotherapy.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Although bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs) have been reported to exhibit a protective effect on animal models of chronic kidney disease (CKD), the exact mechanisms involved require further investigation. This study aims to investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms of BMMSCs in inhibiting ferroptosis and preventing an Adriamycin (ADR)-induced CKD injury. METHODS: A rat model of long-term CKD induced through the injection of ADR administered twice weekly via the tail vein was used in this study. After BMMSCs were systemically administered through the renal artery, pathological staining, western blotting, ELISA, and transmission electron microscopy were used to analyze ferroptosis. RESULTS: Analyses of renal function and histopathological findings indicated that ADR-mediated renal dysfunction improved in response to the BMMSC treatment, which was also sufficient to mediate the partial reversal of renal injury and mitochondrial pathological changes. BMMSCs decreased the ferrous iron (Fe2+) and reactive oxygen species and elevated glutathione (GSH) and GSH peroxidase 4. Moreover, the BMMSC treatment activated the expression of ferroptosis-related regulator NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and inhibited Keap1 and p53 in CKD rat kidney tissues. CONCLUSIONS: BMMSCs alleviate CKD, possibly resulting from the inhibition of kidney ferroptosis by regulating the Nrf2-Keap1/p53 pathway.

RESUMO

AIM: To explore the clinical and genetic spectrum of hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) in Chinese children. METHOD: This retrospective study was conducted between January 2014 and October 2021 in children clinically diagnosed with either pure HSP (pHSP) or complex HSP (cHSP). RESULTS: We investigated 45 children (32 males, 13 females; mean age [SD] at symptom onset 4 years [7 months]). clinically diagnosed with HSP and identified genetic causes in 35 patients. Most patients with autosomal dominant HSP had pHSP (16/18), whereas most patients with autosomal recessive HSP tended to have cHSP (14/16). SPG11 was the most common autosomal recessive subtype, followed by FA2H/SPG35, whereas SPAST/SPG4 was the most frequent cause of autosomal dominant HSP. Two patients with CPT1C mutations presented with a complex phenotype. Meanwhile, 10 patients were found to have likely pathogenic variants/variants of uncertain clinical significance in six genes related to HSP. INTERPRETATION: SPG11 and SPG4 were the most frequent subtypes in Chinese children with autosomal recessive HSP and autosomal dominant HSP. However, the prevalence of SPG4 was much lower than that in adults, which might be explained by the late onset of the disease. On the other hand, FA2H/SPG35 was common in our cohort, while it contributed to only a small proportion of adult cases, which might be explained by its rapid progression and early death in some patients. We also expanded the genetic and clinical spectra of SPG73.

RESUMO

Polyethylene microplastics have been detected in farmland soil, irrigation water, and soil organisms in agroecosystems, while plastic mulching is suggested as a crucial source of microplastic pollution in the agroecosystem. Plastic mulch can be broken down from plastic mulch debris to microplastics through environmental aging and degradation process in farmlands, and the colonization of polyethylene-degrading microorganisms on polyethylene microplastics can eventually enzymatically depolymerize the polyethylene molecular chains with CO2 release through the tricarboxylic acid cycle. The selective colonization of microplastics by soil microorganisms can cause changes in soil microbial community composition, and it can consequently elicit changes in enzyme activities and nutrient element content in the soil. The biological uptake of polyethylene microplastics and the associated disturbance of energy investment are the main mechanisms impacting soil-dwelling animal development and behavior. As polyethylene microplastics are highly hydrophobic, their presence among soil particles can contribute to soil water repellency and influence soil water availability. Polyethylene microplastics have been shown to cause impacts on crop plant growth, as manifested by the effects of polyethylene microplastics on soil properties and soil biota in the agroecosystems. This review reveals the degradation process, biological impacts, and associated mechanisms of polyethylene microplastics in agroecosystems and could be a critical reference for their risk assessment and management.

RESUMO

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is a rare mesenchymal tumor that is mainly seen in middle-aged women. PEComa originating in the ureter is extremely rare it is unclear whether they display typical clinical and radiographic features seen elsewhere. Herein, we report findings from 2 cases of primary PEComa of the ureter that we classified as malignant. Case 1: A 45-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital with intermittent distension in her waist. After appropriate imaging, the right ureter and right kidney were excised under general anesthesia. The tumor measured 1.4 cm. Microscopically, the tumor displayed infiltrative growth, >2 mitoses per 10 high power fields (HPF), necrosis, and lympho-vascular invasion. Case 2: A 30-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital due to hematuria 20 days duration. The left ureter and left kidney were ultimately excised under general anesthesia. The tumor measured 2 cm. Microscopically, the tumor showed infiltrative growth and >2 mitoses/10 HPF. Our cases were diagnosed as malignant PEComa. No disease recurrence was observed in either of the two patients during the postoperative follow-up period. Malignant primary ureteral PEComa is very rare. The clinical manifestations are not specific, and it is usually misdiagnosed as a malignant neoplasm on imaging. Therefore, its diagnosis requires pathological examination and immunohistochemical analysis of the sampled or resected tumor. Treatment requires a complete surgical resection and regular clinical follow-up.

RESUMO

In order to establish the standardized processing technology of the hot water washing of Euodiae Fructus, this study, based on the traditional processing method of hot water washing of Euodiae Fructus recorded in ancient works and modern processing specifications of traditional Chinese medicine decoction pieces, took the yield of decoction pieces and the content of main components as the indicators and optimized the processing conditions by orthogonal test based on the results of single factor investigation. At the same time, electronic tongue technology was used to analyze the change law of the taste index of Euodiae Fructus during the hot water washing. The results of the single factor investigation showed that the content of the main components in Euodiae Fructus showed some regular changes during the processing. Specifically, the content of chlorogenic acid, hyperin, isorhamnetin-3-O-rutinoside, isorhamnetin-3-O-galactoside, and dehydroevodiamine decreased significantly, with average decreases of-23.75%,-27.80%,-14.04%,-14.03%, and-13.11%, respectively. The content of limonin increased significantly with an average increase of 19.83%. The content of evodiamine, rutaecarpine, evocarpine, and dihydroevocarpine showed fluctuating changes and generally increased, with average variation amplitudes of 0.54%,-3.78%, 2.69%, and 5.13%, respectively. The orthogonal test results showed that the optimum processing parameters for the hot water washing of Euodiae Fructus were as follows: washing time of 2 min, the solid-to-liquid ratio of 1∶10 g·mL~(-1), washing temperature of 80 ℃, washing once, and drying at 50 ℃. After the hot water washing processing, the average yield of Euodiae Fructus pieces was 94.80%. The content of limonin, evodiamine, and rutaecarpine was higher than those of raw pro-ducts, and the average transfer rates were 102.56%, 103.15%, and 105.16%, respectively. The content of dehydroevodiamine was lower than that of the raw products, and the average transfer rate was 83.04%. The results of taste analysis showed that the hot water washing could significantly reduce the salty, astringent, and bitter tastes of Euodiae Fructus. This study revealed the influence of the hot water washing on the content of main components and taste of Euodiae Fructus, and the processing technology of the hot water was-hing of Euodiae Fructus established in this study was stable, feasible, and suitable for industrial production, which laid a foundation for clarifying its processing principle and improving the quality standard and clinical application value of decoction pieces.

RESUMO

Guaiane-type sesquiterpenoids are a class of terpenoids with [5,7] ring-fused system as the basic skeletal structure composed of three isoprene units, which are substituted by 4,10-dimethyl-7-isopropyl. According to the difference in functional groups and degree of polymerization, they can be divided into simple guaiane-type sesquiterpenoids, sesquiterpene lactones, sesquiterpene dimers, and sesquiterpene trimers. Natural guaiane-type sesquiterpenoids are widely distributed in plants, fungi, and marine organisms, especially in families such as Compositae, Zingiberaceae, Thymelaeaceae, Lamiaceae, and Alismataceae. Guaiane-type sesquiterpenoids have good antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and neuroprotective effects. In this paper, the novel guaiane-type sesquiterpenoids isolated and identified in recent 10 years(2013-2022) and their biological activities were reviewed in order to provide refe-rences for the research and development of guaiane-type sesquiterpenoids.

RESUMO

The polysulfide (PS) dissolution and low conductivity of lithium sulfides (Li2 S) are generally considered the main reasons for limiting the reversible capacity of the lithium-sulfur (Li-S) system. However, as the inevitable intermediate between PSs and Li2 S, lithium disulfide (Li2 S2 ) evolutions are always overlooked. Herein, Li2 S2 evolutions are monitored from the operando measurements on the pouch cell level. Results indicate that Li2 S2 undergoes slow electrochemical reduction and chemical disproportionation simultaneously during the discharging process, leading to further PS dissolution and Li2 S generation without capacity contribution. Compared with the fully oxidized Li2 S, Li2 S2 still residues at the end of the charging state. Therefore, instead of the considered Li2 S and PSs, slow electrochemical conversions and side chemical reactions of Li2 S2 are the determining factors in limiting the sulfur utilization, corresponding to the poor reversible capacity of Li-S batteries.

RESUMO

A strategy of lattice-reversible binary intermetallic compounds of metallic elements is proposed for applications in flexible lithium-ion battery (LIB) anode with high capacity and cycling stability. First, the use of metallic elements can ensure excellent electronic conductivity and high capacity of the active anode substance. Second, binary intermetallic compounds possess a larger initial lattice volume than metallic monomers, so that the problem of volume expansion can be alleviated. Finally, the design of binary intermetallic compounds with lattice reversibility further improves the cycle stability. In this work, the feasibility of this strategy is verified using an indium antimonide (InSb) system. The volumetric expansion and lithium storage mechanism of InSb are investigated by in situ Raman characterization and theoretical calculations. The active material utilization is significantly improved and the growth of In whiskers is inhibited in the micron-sized ball-milled and carbon coated InSb (bInSb@C) anode, which exhibits a reversible capacity of 733.8 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C, and provides a capacity of 411.5 mAh g-1 after 200 cycles at 3 C with an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.95%. This strategy is validated in pouch cells, illustrating the great potential of lattice-reversible binary intermetallic compounds for use as commercial flexible LIB anodes.

RESUMO

Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a well-performing workhorse in chemical production, which encounters complex environmental stresses during industrial processes. We constructed a multiple stress tolerance mutant, Med15V76R/R84K, that was obtained by engineering the KIX domain of Mediator tail subunit Med15. Med15V76R/R84K interacted with transcription factor Hap5 to improve ARV1 expression for sterol homeostasis for decreasing membrane fluidity and thereby enhancing acid tolerance. Med15V76R/R84K interacted with transcription factor Mga2 to improve GIT1 expression for phospholipid biosynthesis for increasing membrane integrity and thereby improving oxidative tolerance. Med15V76R/R84K interacted with transcription factor Aft1 to improve NFT1 expression for inorganic ion transport for reducing membrane permeability and thereby enhancing osmotic tolerance. Based on this Med15 mutation, Med15V76R/R84K, the engineered S. cerevisiae strain, showed a 28.1% increase in pyruvate production in a 1.0-L bioreactor compared to that of S. cerevisiae with its native Med15. These results indicated that Mediator engineering provides a potential alternative for improving multidimensional stress tolerance in S. cerevisiae. IMPORTANCE This study identified the role of the KIX domain of Mediator tail subunit Med15 in response to acetic acid, H2O2, and NaCl in S. cerevisiae. Engineered KIX domain by protein engineering, the mutant strain Med15V76R/R84K, increased multidimensional stress tolerance and pyruvate production compared with that of S. cerevisiae with its native Med15. The Med15V76R/R84K could increase membrane related genes expression possibly by enhancing interaction with transcription factor to improve membrane physiological functions under stress conditions.

RESUMO

The syntheses of valence tautomeric compounds with multistep transitions using new redox-active ligands are the long-term goal of the field of bistable materials. The redox-active tetraoxolene ligand, 2,7-di-tert-butylpyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone (pyreneQ-Q), is now developed to synthesize a pair of dinuclear compounds {[CoL2]2(pyreneSq-Sq)}[Co(CO)4]2·xCH2Cl2·2C6H5CH3 (1, x = 2, L = 1,10-phenanthroline, phen; 2, x = 1.5, L = 2,2'-bipyridine, bpy). Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibilities and single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements indicate a partial one-step valence tautomeric transition for 1 and a rare two-step valence tautomeric transition for 2, respectively. DFT calculation results are consistent with the experimental data, revealing the correlation between thermodynamic parameters and the one-step/two-step valence tautomeric behaviors.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Acanthopanax senticosus, a small woody shrub of the family Araliaceae, can be used as a functional food with multiple biological activities. Eleutheroside E (EE), an important active component of A. senticosus, has significant effects on neurological diseases. However, whether EE can regulate lipid metabolism has not been reported. The brain can mediate communication between neurons and intestinal cells through long-distance neuroendocrine signals. We speculated that EE might regulate the intestinal lipid metabolism of Caenorhabditis elegans through neuroendocrine signals. RESULTS: First, we found that EE reduced the intestinal fat content of C. elegans, without affecting development, reproduction, food intake or movement. In addition, EE significantly regulated genes and metabolites related to lipid metabolism. EE extensively affected fatty acid synthesis, ß-oxidation and lipolysis processes, and regulated the content of various fatty acid and lipid metabolism intermediates. We finally proved that EE reduced intestinal fat storage through serotonin and neuropeptide flp-7-npr-22 pathways in the nervous system. CONCLUSION: EE is expected to be a functional food that regulates lipid metabolism. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Rodents are widely distributed and are the natural reservoirs of a diverse group of zoonotic viruses. Thus, analyzing the viral diversity harbored by rodents could assist efforts to predict and reduce the risk of future emergence of zoonotic viral diseases. Rodents are commonly used in animal testing, particularly mice and rats. Experimental rats are important animal models, and a history of pathogenic infections in these animals will directly affect the animal trial results. The pathogenicity of Anellovirus (AV) remains poorly understood due to the lack of a suitable model cell line or animal to support the viral cycle. This study aimed to discover possible anelloviruses from the virome in feces of experimental rats by viral metagenomic technique. METHODS: Fecal samples were collected from 10 commercial SD rats and pooled into a sample pool and then subjected to libraries construction which was then sequenced on Illumina MiSeq platform. The sequenced reads were analyzed using viral metagenomic analysis pipeline and two novel anelloviruses (AVs) were identified from fecal sample of experimental rats. The prevalence of these two viruses was investigated by conventional PCR. RESULTS: The complete genomic sequence of these two AVs were determined and fully characterized, with strain name ratane153-zj1 and ratane153-zj2. The circular genomes of ratane153-zj1 and ratane153-zj2 are 2785 nt and 1930 nt in length, respectively, and both include three ORFs. Ratane153-zj1 closely clustered with members within the genus Wawtorquevirus and formed a separate branch based on the phylogenetic tree constructed over the amino acid sequence of ORF1 of the two AVs identified in this study and other related AVs. While the complete amino acid sequences of ORF1 of ratane153-zj2 (nt 335 to 1390) had the highest sequence identity with an unclassified AV (GenBank No. ATY37438) from Chinchilla lanigera, and they clustered with one AV (GenBank No. QYD02305) belonging to the genus Etatorquevirus from Lynx rufus. Conventional PCR with two sets of specific primers designed based on the two genomes, respectively, showed that they were detectable at a low frequency in cohorts of experimental rats. CONCLUSION: Our study expanded the genome diversity of AVs and provided genetic background information of viruses existed in experimental rats.

RESUMO

l-lysine is an essential amino acid that contains various functional groups including α-amino, ω-amino, and α-carboxyl groups, exhibiting high reaction potential. The derivatization of these functional groups produces a series of value-added chemicals, such as cadaverine, glutarate, and d-lysine, that are widely applied in the chemical synthesis, cosmetics, food, and pharmaceutical industries. Here, we review recent advances in the biotechnological production of l-lysine and its derivatives and expatiate key technological strategies. Furthermore, we also discuss the existing challenges and potential strategies for more efficient production of these chemicals.

RESUMO

Gaseous sulfuric acid (H2SO4) is a crucial precursor for secondary aerosol formation, particularly for new particle formation (NPF) that plays an essential role in the global number budget of aerosol particles and cloud condensation nuclei. Due to technology challenges, global-wide and long-term measurements of gaseous H2SO4 are currently very challenging. Empirical proxies for H2SO4 have been derived mainly based on short-term intensive campaigns. In this work, we performed comprehensive measurements of H2SO4 and related parameters in the polluted Yangtze River Delta in East China during four seasons and developed a physical proxy based on the budget analysis of gaseous H2SO4. Besides the photo-oxidation of SO2, we found that primary emissions can contribute considerably, particularly at night. Dry deposition has the potential to be a non-negligible sink, in addition to condensation onto particle surfaces. Compared with the empirical proxies, the newly developed physical proxy demonstrates extraordinary stability in all the seasons and has the potential to be widely used to improve the understanding of global NPF fundamentally.
