Background: We performed a meta-analysis to investigate the association of the systemic inflammation response index (SIRI) with long-term survival outcomes in patients with gastrointestinal malignancy. Methods: PubMed, Web of Science and Embase were searched for relevant studies evaluating the prognostic significance of the SIRI in gastrointestinal malignancies until May 2023. Results: 30 studies with 10,091 patients were included. The pooled results identified that patients in the high SIRI group had a worse overall survival and disease-free survival, which was observed across various tumor types, tumor stages and primary treatments. Conclusion: An elevated SIRI is negatively associated with worse survival outcomes of gastrointestinal malignancy patients and can be used as a risk stratification index for gastrointestinal malignancies.

OBJECTIVES: The amount and distribution of intratumoural collagen fibre vary among different thymic tumours, which can be clearly detected with T2- and diffusion-weighted MR images. To explore the incidences of collagen fibre patterns (CFPs) among thymomas, thymic carcinomas and lymphomas on imaging, and to evaluate the efficacy and reproducibility of CFPs in differential diagnosis of thymic tumours. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three hundred and ninety-eight patients with pathologically diagnosed thymoma, thymic carcinoma and lymphoma who underwent T2- and diffusion-weighted MR imaging were retrospectively enrolled. CFPs were classified into four categories: septum sign, patchy pattern, mixed pattern and no septum sign. The incidences of CFPs were compared among different thymic tumours, and the efficacy and reproducibility in differentiating the defined tumour types were analysed. RESULTS: There were significant differences in CFPs among thymomas, thymic squamous cell carcinomas (TSCCs), other thymic carcinomas and neuroendocrine tumours (OTC&NTs) and thymic lymphomas. Septum signs were found in 209 (86%) thymomas, which differed between thymomas and any other thymic neoplasms (all p < 0.005). The patchy, mixed patterns and no septum sign were mainly seen in TSCCs (80.3%), OTC&NTs (78.9%) and thymic lymphomas (56.9%), respectively. The consistency of different CFP evaluation between two readers was either good or excellent. CFPs achieved high efficacy in identifying the thymic tumours. CONCLUSION: The CFPs based on T2- and diffusion-weighted MR imaging were of great value in the differential diagnosis of thymic tumours. KEY POINTS: • Significant differences are found in intratumoural collagen fibre patterns among thymomas, thymic squamous cell carcinomas, other thymic carcinomas and neuroendocrine tumours and thymic lymphomas. • The septum sign, patchy pattern, mixed pattern and no septum sign are mainly seen in thymomas (86%), thymic squamous cell carcinomas (80.3%), other thymic carcinomas and neuroendocrine tumours (79%) and thymic lymphomas (57%), respectively. • The collagen fibre patterns have high efficacy and reproducibility in differentiating thymomas, thymic squamous cell carcinomas and thymic lymphomas.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the value of magnetic resonance (MR) characteristics in differentiating the subtypes of growth hormone pituitary adenomas. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The clinical and MR imaging data of 70 patients with growth hormone pituitary adenoma confirmed by surgery and pathology were retrospectively analyzed. The tumors were divided into dense granular (DG; 36 cases) and sparse granular subtypes (SG; 34 cases). The tumors' MR features were analyzed, including the mean and maximum diameters, T2 signal intensity, T2 relative signal intensity (rSI), homogeneity, enhancement degree, and invasiveness (Knosp grade). Mann-Whitney U test and χ2 test were used to analyze MR characteristics between the 2 groups. The independent predictors and predictive probabilities of tumor subtypes were obtained via a logistic regression model, and the efficacy was compared by receiver operating characteristic curve. RESULTS: The mean and maximum diameters of growth hormone adenoma in DG and SG were 1.77 versus 2.45 and 1.95 versus 3.00 cm (median, P < 0.05), respectively. There was a significant difference between the 2 groups in T2 signal intensity and rSI (P values were 0.02 and 0.001, respectively). Most DG adenomas (86.1%) appeared as hypointense on T2 images, and 38.2% of SG adenomas were hyperintense. There was no significant difference in tumor homogeneity (P = 0.622). A significant difference was found in the Knosp grade between the 2 subtypes (P = 0.004). In addition, the enhancement degree of SG adenomas was significantly higher than that of DG adenomas (P = 0.001). Logistic regression analysis showed that high T2 rSI value and marked contrast enhancement were independent predictors of the 2 subtypes, and the odds ratios were 4.811 and 4.649, respectively. The multivariate logistic model obtained relatively high predicting efficacy, and the area under the curve, sensitivity, and specificity were 0.765, 0.882, and 0.500, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: There are significant differences in tumor size, T2 signal intensity, T2 rSI, enhancement degree, and invasiveness between DG and SG adenomas. The logistic model based on the marked contrast enhancement and high T2 rSI value has an important value in predicting the subtype of growth hormone adenoma.

Sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were isolated from indoor dust from various categories of rooms in Changchun city, northeast China, including dormitory, office, kitchen, and living rooms. PAH concentrations ranged from 33.9 to 196.4 µg g-1 and 21.8 to 329.6 µg g-1 during summer and winter, respectively, indicating that total PAH concentrations in indoor dust are much higher than those in other media from the urban environment, including soils and sediments. The percentage of five- to six-ring PAHs was high, indicating that PAHs found in indoor dust mainly originate from pyrolysis rather than a petrogenic source. Rooms were divided into three groups using cluster analysis on the basis of 16 PAH compositions, namely smoke-free homes, homes exposed to smoke and offices. Results showed that the source of PAHs in smoke-free residential homes is primarily the burning of fossil fuels. In addition to the burning of fossil fuels, biomass combustion and cooking contributed to PAHs in houses exposed to smoke (including kitchens). Motor vehicles are an additional source of PAHs in offices because of greater interactions with the outdoor environment. The results of health risk assessment showed that the cancer risk levels by dermal contact and ingestion are 104- to 105-fold higher than that by inhalation, suggesting that ingestion and dermal contact of carcinogenic PAHs in dust are more important exposure routes than inhalation of PAHs from air. Although the results showed high potential of PAH concentrations in indoor dust in Changchun for human health risk, caution should be taken to evaluate the risk of PAHs calculated by USEPA standard models with default parameters because habitation styles are different in various categories of rooms.

BACKGROUND: The efficacy of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in advanced gastric cancer (GC) is still a controversial issue. AIM: To find factors associated with chemosensitivity to NAC treatment and to provide the optimal therapeutic strategies for GC patients receiving NAC. METHODS: The clinical information was collected from 230 GC patients who received NAC treatment at the Central South University Xiangya School of Medicine Affiliated Haikou Hospital from January 2016 to December 2020. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator logistic regression analysis was used to find the possible predictors. A nomogram model was employed to predict the response to NAC. RESULTS: In total 230 patients were finally included in this study, including 154 males (67.0%) and 76 females (33.0%). The mean age was (59.37 ± 10.60) years, ranging from 24 years to 80 years. According to the tumor regression grade standard, there were 95 cases in the obvious response group (grade 0 or grade 1) and 135 cases in the poor response group (grade 2 or grade 3). The obvious response rate was 41.3%. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator analysis showed that four risk factors significantly related to the efficacy of NAC were tumor location (P < 0.001), histological differentiation (P = 0.001), clinical T stage (P = 0.008), and carbohydrate antigen 724 (P = 0.008). The C-index for the prediction nomogram was 0.806. The calibration curve revealed that the predicted value exhibited good agreement with the actual value. Decision curve analysis showed that the nomogram had a good value in clinical application. CONCLUSION: A nomogram combining tumor location, histological differentiation, clinical T stage, and carbohydrate antigen 724 showed satisfactory predictive power to the response of NAC and can be used by gastrointestinal surgeons to determine the optimal treatment strategies for advanced GC patients.

Drought induced by climate warming and human activities regulates carbon (C) cycling of peatlands by changing plant community composition and soil properties. Estimating the responses of peatlands C cycling to environmental changes requires further study of C: nitrogen (N): phosphorus (P) stoichiometric ratios of soil, plants, and enzyme activities. However, systematic studies on the stoichiometry of above-ground and below-ground ecosystems of peatlands post drainage remain scarce. This study compared stoichimetric ratios of plant and soil and stoichimetric ratios of enzyme activities with different functions in two different parts of a minerotrophic peatland, a natural undisturbed part and a part that had been drained for almost 50 years, in Northern China. For the shrub plants, the average C:N:P ratios of leaf in natural and drained peatland were 448:17:1 and 393:15:1, respectively. This indicated that the growth rate of shrub plants is higher in the drained peatland than in the natural peatland, which makes P element more concentrated in the photosynthetic site. However, from the perspective of the dominant plant, the mean C:N:P ratio of Carex leaf was 650:25:1 in the natural peatland, but was 1028:50:1 for Dasiphora fruticosa in drained peatland. This indicated that the intensification of P-limitation of plant growth after drainage. Soil C:N:P ratios of above water table depth (AWT) were 238:15:1 and 277:12:1, but were 383:17:1 and 404:19:1 for below water table depth (BWT) in the natural and the drained peatland, respectively. Soil C:P ratios were greater than the threshold elemental ratio of C:P (174:1), but the soil C:N ratios were less than the threshold elemental ratio of C:N (23:1), which suggested that P was the most limiting nutrient of soil. The soil microbial activities were co-limited by C&P in Baijianghe peatlands. However, the microbial metabolic P limitation was intensified, but the C limitation was weakened for the above water table depth soil after long-term drainage. There are connection between plant-microbe P limitation in peatlands. The P limitation of microbial metabolism was significant positively correlated with soil C:N but negatively with soil moisture. The increase in the lignocelluloses index suggested considerable decomposition of soil organic matter after peatland drainage. These results of stoichiometric ratios from above- to below ground could provide scientific base for the C cycling of peatland undergone climate change.

Drug resistance in tumours has seriously hindered the therapeutic effect. Tumour drug resistance is divided into primary resistance and acquired resistance, and the recent study has found that a significant proportion of cancer cells can acquire stable drug resistance from scratch. This group of cells first enters the drug tolerance state (DT state) under drug pressure, and gradually acquires stable drug resistance through adaptive mutations in this state. Although the specific mechanisms underlying the formation of drug tolerant cells (DTCs) remain unclear, various proteins and signalling pathways have been identified as being involved in the formation of DTCs. In the current review, we summarize the characteristics, molecular mechanisms and therapeutic strategies of DTCs in detail.

Ubiquitin is a small protein that can be added onto target protein for inducing target degradation, thereby modulating the activity and stability of protein. Relatively, deubiquitinases (DUBs), a class catalase that can remove ubiquitin from substrate protein, provide a positive regulation of the protein amount at transcription level, post-translational modification, protein interaction, etc. The reversible and dynamic ubiquitination-deubiquitination process plays an essential role in maintaining protein homeostasis, which is critical to almost all the biological processes. Therefore, the metabolic dysregulation of deubiquitinases often lead to serious consequences, including the growth and metastasis of tumors. Accordingly, deubiquitinases can be served as key drug targets for the treatment of tumors. The small molecule inhibitors targeting deubiquitinases has become one of the hot spots of anti-tumor drug research areas. This review concentrated on the function and mechanism of deubiquitinase system in the proliferation, apoptosis, metastasis and autophagy of tumor cells. The research status of small molecule inhibitors of specific deubiquitinases in tumor treatment is introduced, aiming to provide reference for the development of clinical targeted drugs.

Appropriate hydrological management is critical for peatland restoration. An important prerequisite for peatland restoration is a recovery of soil biological processes. However, little is known about the effects of different hydrological management practices on soil biological processes during peatland restoration. In this study, the variations in soil properties, enzyme activities, and bacterial communities across different peatlands, namely natural peatland (NP), peatland restored under high water level (HR), peatland restored under alternating high-low water level (HLR), peatland restored under low water level (LR), and degraded peatland (DP), in the Changbai Mountains were investigated. Results showed that soil organic carbon, soil water content, and total nitrogen in NP were significantly higher than those in restored and degraded peatlands, and these soil properties in restored peatlands increased with the water level. The activities of soil hydrolases including ß-1, 4-glucosidase, ß-1, 4-n-acetylglucosidase, and acid phosphatase in NP were higher than in restored and degraded peatlands, while the activity of polyphenol oxidase in NP was the lowest. In restored peatlands, all measured enzyme activities decreased with the decline in water level. Both bacterial diversity and richness in NP were the lowest, while the highest diversity and richness were observed in HR. Redundancy analysis indicated that soil organic carbon, water level, soil water content, total nitrogen, and pH were the most important factors that affected the soil enzyme activities and bacterial community. Our findings give insight into the effects of different hydrological regimes on soil biological processes during peatland restoration. Maintaining a high water level early in the restoration process is more beneficial to restoring the ecological functions of peatlands than other hydrological regimes.

Soil fungal communities are key players in biogeochemical processes of peatlands, which are important carbon stocks globally. Although it has been elucidated that fungi are susceptible to environmental changes, little is known about the intricate and interactive effect of long-term nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) enrichment on fungal community structure in northern peatlands. In this study, we compared a short- (2 years) with a long-term (10 years) fertilization experiment in a peatland complex in northeastern China to assess how N and/or P additions influence fungal community structure. The results showed that fungal community composition and diversity were altered by N addition, without a significant interactive effect with P addition. Not only the long-term but also the short-term nutrient addition could change the abundance of different plant functional types. However, there were no strong cascading effects on the fungal community in any of the fertilization experiments. Long-term nutrient addition showed a stronger effect on the relative abundance of different fungal functional guilds; an increase in the relative abundance of saprotrophs after fertilization did not jeopardize mycorrhizal fungi. Moreover, the decline in Sphagnum cover after long-term N addition did not parallel changes in the relative abundance of Sphagnum-associated fungi (Clavaria sphagnicola, Galerina tibiicystis, G. sphagnicola, and G. paludosa). Given that short- and long-term fertilization showed strongly contrasting effects on fungal community structure, our study highlights the necessity of assessing the long-term effects of nutrient enrichment on the association between vegetation and fungal community in peatland ecosystems. Future research priorities should emphasize the connection between the community structure of fungal functional guilds and their functionality, which is of paramount importance to better understand their influences on C storage in the face of uncertain N and P deposition regimes.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the value of morphological feature and signal intensity ratio (SIR) derived from conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in distinguishing primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) from atypical glioblastoma (aGBM). METHODS: Pathology-confirmed PCNSLs (n = 93) or aGBMs (n = 48) from three institutions were retrospectively enrolled and divided into training cohort (n = 98) and test cohort (n = 43). Morphological features and SIRs were compared between PCNSL and aGBM. Using linear discriminant analysis, multiple models were constructed with SIRs and morphological features alone or jointly, and the diagnostic performances were evaluated via receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. Areas under the curves (AUCs) and accuracies (ACCs) of the models were compared with the radiologists' assessment. RESULTS: Incision sign, T2 pseudonecrosis sign, reef sign and peritumoral leukomalacia sign were associated with PCNSL (training and overall cohorts, P < 0.05). Increased T1 ratio, decreased T2 ratio and T2/T1 ratio were predictive of PCNSL (all P < 0.05). ROC analysis showed that combination of morphological features and SIRs achieved the best diagnostic performance for differentiation of PCNSL and aGBM with AUC/ACC of 0.899/0.929 for the training cohort, AUC/ACC of 0.794/0.837 for the test cohort and AUC/ACC of 0.869/0.901 for the overall cohort, respectively. Based on the overall cohort, two radiologists could distinguish PCNSL from aGBM with AUC/ACC of 0.732/0.724 for radiologist A and AUC/ACC of 0.811/0.829 for radiologist B. CONCLUSION: MRI morphological features can help differentiate PCNSL from aGBM. When combined with SIRs, the diagnostic performance was better than that of radiologists' assessment.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to establish and compare the radiomics machine learning (ML) models based on non-contrast enhanced computed tomography (NECT) and clinical features for predicting the simplified risk categorization of thymic epithelial tumors (TETs). EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: A total of 509 patients with pathologically confirmed TETs from January 2009 to May 2018 were retrospectively enrolled, consisting of 238 low-risk thymoma (LRT), 232 high-risk thymoma (HRT), and 39 thymic carcinoma (TC), and were divided into training (n = 433) and testing cohorts (n = 76) according to the admission time. Volumes of interest (VOIs) covering the whole tumor were manually segmented on preoperative NECT images. A total of 1218 radiomic features were extracted from the VOIs, and 4 clinical variables were collected from the hospital database. Fourteen ML models, along with varied feature selection strategies, were used to establish triple-classification models using the radiomic features (radiomic models), while clinical-radiomic models were built after combining with the clinical variables. The diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of radiologist assessment, the radiomic and clinical-radiomic models were evaluated on the testing cohort. RESULTS: The Support Vector Machine (SVM) clinical-radiomic model demonstrated the highest AUC of 0.841 (95% CI 0.820 to 0.861) on the cross-validation result and reached an AUC of 0.844 (95% CI 0.793 to 0.894) in the testing cohort. For the one-vs-rest question of LRT vs HRT + TC, the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy reached 80.00%, 63.41%, and 71.05%, respectively. For HRT vs LRT + TC, they reached 60.53%, 78.95%, and 69.74%. For TC vs LRT + HRT they reached 33.33%, 98.63%, and 96.05%, respectively. Compared with the radiomic models, superior diagnostic efficacy was demonstrated for most clinical-radiomics models, and the AUC of the Bernoulli Naive Bayes model was significantly improved. Radiologist2's assessment achieved a higher AUC of 0.813 (95% CI: 0.756-0.8761) than other radiologists, which was slightly lower than the SVM clinical-radiomic model. Combined with other evaluation indicators, SVM, as the best ML model, demonstrated the potential of predicting the simplified risk categorization of TETs with superior predictive performance to that of radiologists' assessment. CONCLUSION: Most of the ML models are promising in predicting the simplified TETs risk categorization with superior efficacy to that of radiologists' assessment, especially the SVM models, demonstrated the integration of ML with NECT may be valuable in aiding the diagnosis and treatment planning.

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) plays an important role in regulating the carbon cycles in the peatland. In this study, we collected surface water once or twice a month from natural and drained areas of peatland in the Changbai Mountain, northeastern China, and determined the concentrations, spectral information, and composition of DOC, as well as the concentrations of other elements. The results showed that the concentrations of total N and NH4+ in the drained area were significantly higher than those in the natural area in most cases, but concentrations of total dissolved Fe were significantly lower. The DOC concentrations in the natural and drained area ranged from 31.0 mg L-1 to 320.8 mg L-1 and from 33.2 mg L-1 to 105.8 mg L-1, respectively. It is shown that DOC concentration in the drained area was generally lower than those in the natural area in mid-growing season, but it was higher in early- and end-growing seasons. SUVA254 (Abs254/DOC concentration) in the drained area was generally higher than in the natural area, indicating more aromatic DOC fraction in drained area. No consistent difference in other spectroscopy was observed between natural and drained areas. In contrast, molecular analysis of DOC not only confirmed an increase in the fraction of aromatic compounds in DOC but also showed different compositions of DOC between the natural and drained areas on molecular level, suggesting enhanced decomposition of peat organic matters after drainage. Notably, the average percentage of protein-like structures in DOC in drained area was significantly higher than that in natural area (14.9 ± 1.7% vs. 12.8 ± 0.8%), indicating preferential release of dissolved organic nitrogen from peat organic matter. Overall, this study suggests drainage can enhance decomposition of peat organic matters, resulting in more protein-like structures released into water.

Surface wetness of Yuanchi peatland in the Changbai Mountains were reconstructed by comprehensive analysis on plant residue, testate amoeba and humification, using the age-depth model established with AMS 14C and 137Cs dating methods. The response of surface wetness to climate change was addressed. Results showed that plant residues in the top 50 cm of peat sequence were dominated by mosses. Detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) of plant residue revealed that axis 1 of DCA biplot might represent mire surface wetness (MSW). MSW from 1962 to 2008 as indicated by axis 1 scores of DCA on plant residue were compared with depths to water table derived by testate amoebae-DWT transfer function and humification measurements, and the results showed that the trends of MSW reconstructed by three proxies were largely consistent. They were wetter MSW from 40-50 cm (1962 to 1975), 27-40 cm (fluctuating from wet to dry from 1975 to 1987), and 0-27 cm (drier from 1987 to 2008). Compared with instrumental data from nearby Erdao weather station, the reconstructed MSW was basically consistent with temperature change in this period. The decreases of MSW occurred when mean summer temperature and mean annual temperature were higher than long-term mean value. Our results suggest that the variability in MSW in the recent 46 years predominantly responded weakening of effective precipitation induced by increasing temperature.

We investigated the plant species richness both in cespitose Carex mires (C. schmidtii, C. meyeriana) and non-cespitose Carex mire (C. lasiocarpa) in Changbai Mountain. A total of 83 species (36 families, 59 genuses) was recorded in three sites. Among which, 71 species occurred in the C. meyeriana site, 61 species in the C. schmidtii site, and 26 species in the C. lasiocarpa site. The total species number and species richness in the two cespitose Carex mires were much higher than that in the non-cespitose Carex mire, while those on tussocks were much higher than between tussocks in the two cespitose Carex mires. Plant species richness on tussocks was positively related to the height, basal circumference and surface area of the tussocks, suggesting that tussocks were important for plant species diversity in Carex mires. Results of the canonical correspondence analysis indicated that the differences in soil water content, nutrient (soil organic carbon, total N, total P and C/N), and litter layer depth were the main factors influencing the differences of plant community composition on tussocks and between-tussocks. In the cespitose Carex mires, the hummock-hollow microtopography could foster high diversity by increasing surface area and creating multiple micro-habitats. Given its function in maintaining high species diversity, cespitose Carex could be a preferred species for vegetation restoration in degraded peat mires.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the usefulness of texture signatures based on multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in predicting the subtypes of growth hormone (GH) pituitary adenoma (PA). METHODS: Forty-nine patients with GH-secreting PA confirmed by the pathological analysis were included in this retrospective study. Texture parameters based on T1-, T2-, and contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images (T1C) were extracted and compared for differences between densely granulated (DG) and sparsely granulated (SG) somatotroph adenoma by using two segmentation methods [region of interest 1 (ROI1), excluding the cystic/necrotic portion, and ROI2, containing the whole tumor]. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed to determine the differentiating efficacy. RESULTS: Among 49 included patients, 24 were DG and 25 were SG adenomas. Nine optimal texture features with significant differences between two groups were obtained from ROI1. Based on the ROC analyses, T1WI signatures from ROI1 achieved the highest diagnostic efficacy with an AUC of 0.918, the accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) were 85.7, 72.0, 100.0, 100.0, and 77.4%, respectively, for differentiating DG from SG. Comparing with the T1WI signature, the T1C signature obtained relatively high efficacy with an AUC of 0.893. When combining the texture features of T1WI and T1C, the radiomics signature also had a good performance in differentiating the two groups with an AUC of 0.908. In addition, the performance got in all the signatures from ROI2 was lower than those in the corresponding signature from ROI1. CONCLUSION: Texture signatures based on MR images may be useful biomarkers to differentiate subtypes of GH-secreting PA patients.

The past ecosystem responses to climate variability makes it possible to view the sensitivity of ecosystems to climate-forced state shifts. To test the hypothesis that the development of peatland in the Changbai Mountains responds to the variability of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM), the developmental history of the Hani peatland was investigated based on peat basal ages. It can be concluded that the development of Hani peatland is the paludification. The development of the northern region started 13,685 cal. yr BP, while that of the southern region was initiated 7705 cal. yr BP. In addition, the moisture changes and development of the Hani peatland can be divided into three periods. From 16 to 7 ka cal. BP, the increase in the EASM was induced by the lower sea level and southward displacement of the Western Pacific Subtropical High (WPSH), resulting in increasing moisture in the Hani peatland. Peat was gradually established in the northern region. From 7 to 2 ka cal. BP, the increased relative sea level and northward displacement of the WPSH induced the maximum EASM. The EASM and Northeast Monsoon (NEM) induced the maximum moisture in the Hani peatland. Both the northern and southern regions were covered with peat during this period. Since 2 ka cal. BP, the decreasing EASM might be related to the seasonal decrease in the Northern Hemisphere summer insolation and ENSO intensity. Thus, the decreasing EASM induced the decrease in the moisture in the Hani peatland. Peat further accumulated in both the northern and southern regions. This study will help to understand the future EASM behavior in NE China and the development of similar peatlands in response to ongoing and future climatic change.

The dynamics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) degradation in Sphagnum litters and the decomposition of the litters were investigated. PAH concentration decreased to approximately half of the initial concentration as Sphagnum litters decayed. The initial PAH concentration was 489.2 ± 72.2 ng g-1, and the concentration after 120 days of incubation was 233.0 ± 5.8 ng g-1. The different PAH compositions changed concentrations at different times. The low-molecular-weight (LMW) and high-molecular-weight (HMW) PAHs started to be degraded after incubation and after 40 days of incubation, respectively. PAH concentrations in the Sphagnum litters correlated with the total organic carbon (TOC) content (p < 0.05), indicating that PAHs were associated with the TOC of the Sphagnum litters and were degraded as organic matter decayed. The positive relationship between LMW PAH concentration and the soluble carbohydrate content (p < 0.05) indicated that LMW PAHs and the readily decomposed organic carbon fractions were cometabolized, or that LMW PAHs were mainly absorbed by soluble carbohydrate. The weak negative correlation between fulvic acid (FA) and PAH concentrations (p < 0.1) indicated that FA may enhance PAH degradation. Redundancy analysis suggested that the contents of both soluble carbohydrate and cellulose significantly affected the changes in PAH concentrations (p < 0.05), and that FA content and C/N ratios may also contribute to the changes in PAH concentrations (p < 0.1). However, the polyphenol that was related to microbial activities was not associated with changes in PAH concentrations. These results suggested that litter quality is more important than microbial activities in PAH degradation in Sphagnum litters.

Quantifying the temporal and spatial patterns of temperature sensitivity (Q10) of soil respiration (Rs) as well as its controlling factors is critical to reveal the response the soil ecological processes to global warming and improve carbon budget estimations at a regional scale. The seasonal and annual variations in the temperature response of Rs were assessed during the two growing seasons in 2011 and 2012 in four different vegetation sites in a meadow steppe of the Songnen Plain, China. The Q10 values across all sites exhibited significant seasonal variations with a minimum value (1.81-2.34) occurring during summer and a peak value (3.82-4.54) occurring in either spring or autumn. The mean seasonal Q10 values showed no significant differences among the four different vegetation types. On the annual scale, however, the Chloris virgata site had significantly higher annual Q10 values (3.67-4.22) than the other three community sites in 2011 and 2012 and over the two years (2.01-3.67), indicating that the response of the Rs to climate warming may vary with vegetation type. The soil temperature and moisture had interactive effects on the variations of Q10 values. Soil temperature was the dominant factor influencing Q10 values, while soil moisture was an additional contributor to the variations of Q10. Due to the significant temporal and spatial variations in soil respiration response to temperature, acclimation of Rs to temperature variation should be taken into account in forecasting future terrestrial carbon cycle and its feedback to global warming.
