RESUMO

Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) involves charge transfer between electrochemical redox intermediates to produce an excited state for light emission. Ensuring precise control of charge transfer is essential for decoding ECL fundamentals, yet guidelines on how to achieve this for conventional emitters remain unexplored. Molecular ratchets offer a potential solution, as they enable the directional transfer of energy or chemicals while impeding the reverse movement. Herein, we designed 10 pairs of imine-based covalent organic frameworks as reticular ratchets to delicately manipulate the intrareticular charge transfer for directing ECL transduction from electric and chemical energies. Aligning the donor and acceptor (D-A) directions with the imine dipole effectively facilitates charge migration, whereas reversing the D-A direction impedes it. Notably, the ratchet effect of charge transfer directionality intensified with increasing D-A contrast, resulting in a remarkable 680-fold improvement in the ECL efficiency. Furthermore, dipole-controlled exciton binding energy, electron/hole decay kinetics, and femtosecond transient absorption spectra identified the electron transfer tendency from the N-end toward the C-end of reticular ratchets during ECL transduction. An exponential correlation between the ECL efficiency and the dipole difference was discovered. Our work provides a general approach to manipulate charge transfer and design next-generation electrochemical devices.

RESUMO

Zinc-iodine batteries are one of the most intriguing types of batteries that offer high energy density and low toxicity. However, the low intrinsic conductivity of iodine, together with high polyiodide solubility in aqueous electrolytes limits the development of high-areal-capacity zinc-iodine batteries with high stability, especially at low current densities. Herein, we proposed a hydrophobic polyiodide ionic liquid as a zinc-ion battery cathode, which successfully activates the iodine redox process by offering 4 orders of magnitude higher intrinsic electrical conductivity and remarkably lower solubility that suppressed the polyiodide shuttle in a dual-plating zinc-iodine cell. By the molecular engineering of the chemical structure of the polyiodide ionic liquid, the electronic conductivity can reach 3.4 × 10-3 S cm-1 with a high Coulombic efficiency of 98.2%. The areal capacity of the zinc-iodine battery can achieve 5.04 mAh cm-2 and stably operate at 3.12 mAh cm-2 for over 990 h. Besides, a laser-scribing designed flexible dual-plating-type microbattery based on a polyiodide ionic liquid cathode also exhibits stable cycling in both a single cell and 4 × 4 integrated cell, which can operate with the polarity-switching model with high stability.

RESUMO

AIMS: Although there are various model-based approaches to individualized vancomycin (VCM) administration, few have been reported for adult patients with periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). This work attempted to develop a machine learning (ML)-based model for predicting VCM trough concentration in adult PJI patients. METHODS: The dataset of 287 VCM trough concentrations from 130 adult PJI patients was split into a training set (229) and a testing set (58) at a ratio of 8:2, and an independent external 32 concentrations were collected as a validation set. A total of 13 covariates and the target variable (VCM trough concentration) were included in the dataset. A covariate model was respectively constructed by support vector regression, random forest regression and gradient boosted regression trees and interpreted by SHapley Additive exPlanation (SHAP). RESULTS: The SHAP plots visualized the weight of the covariates in the models, with estimated glomerular filtration rate and VCM daily dose as the 2 most important factors, which were adopted for the model construction. Random forest regression was the optimal ML algorithm with a relative accuracy of 82.8% and absolute accuracy of 67.2% (R2 =.61, mean absolute error = 2.4, mean square error = 10.1), and its prediction performance was verified in the validation set. CONCLUSION: The proposed ML-based model can satisfactorily predict the VCM trough concentration in adult PJI patients. Its construction can be facilitated with only 2 clinical parameters (estimated glomerular filtration rate and VCM daily dose), and prediction accuracy can be rationalized by SHAP values, which highlights a profound practical value for clinical dosing guidance and timely treatment.

RESUMO

Parasitic side reactions and dendrite growth on zinc anodes are formidable issues causing limited lifetime of aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs). Herein, a spontaneous cascade optimization strategy is first proposed to regulate Zn2+ migration-diffusion behavior. Specifically, PAPE@Zn layer with separation-reconstruction properties is constructed in-situ on Zn anode. In this layer, well-soluble poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) can spontaneously separation to bulk electrolyte and weaken the preferential coordination between H2O and Zn2+ to achieve primary optimization. Meanwhile, poor-soluble polymerized-4-acryloylmorpholine (PACMO) is reconstructed on Zn anode as hydrophobic flower-like arrays with abundant zincophilic sites, further guiding the de-solvation and homogeneous diffusion of Zn2+ to achieve the secondary optimization. Cascade optimization effectively regulates Zn2+ migration-diffusion behavior, dendrite growth and side reactions of Zn anode are negligible, and the stability is significantly improved. Consequently, symmetrical cells exhibit stability over 4000 h (1 mA cm-2). PAPE@Zn//NH4+-V2O5 full cells with a high current density of 15 A g-1 maintains 72.2% capacity retention for 12000 cycles. Even better, the full cell demonstrates excellent performance of cumulative capacity of 2.33 Ah cm-2 at ultra-low negative/positive (N/P) ratio of 0.6 and a high mass-loading (~17 mg cm-2). The spontaneous cascade optimization strategy provides novel path to achieve high-performance and practical ZIBs.

RESUMO

The instability of the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) is a critical challenge for the zinc metal anodes, leading to an erratic electrode/electrolyte interface and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), ultimately resulting in anode failure. This study uncovers that the fluorine species dissolution is the root cause of SEI instability. To effectively suppress the F- dissolution, an introduction of a low-polarity molecule, 1,4-thioxane (TX), is proposed, which reinforces the stability of the fluorine-rich SEI. Moreover, the TX molecule has a strong affinity for coordinating with Zn2+ and adsorbing at the electrode/electrolyte interface, thereby diminishing the activity of local water and consequently impeding SEI dissolution. The robust fluorine-rich SEI layer promotes the high durability of the zinc anode in repeated plating/stripping cycles, while concurrently suppressing HER and enhancing Coulombic efficiency. Notably, the symmetric cell with TX demonstrates exceptional electrochemical performance, sustaining over 500 hours at 20 mA cm-2 with 10 mAh cm-2. Furthermore, the Zn||KVOH full cell exhibits excellent capacity retention, averaging 6.8 mAh cm-2 with 98 % retention after 400 cycles, even at high loading with a lean electrolyte. This work offers a novel perspective on SEI dissolution as a key factor in anode failure, providing valuable insights for the electrolyte design in energy storage devices.

RESUMO

Phase separation is a trivial phenomenon but a mature strategy in materials science. The flexible materials are provided toughness and strength by phase separation, yet there are few applications in optics and electronics industry. A novel phase-separated dielectric gel (PSDG) with a strong Christiansen effect is prepared via radical polymerization using hydroxyethyl methacrylate as a monomer, 4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl and tributyl citrate as mixed solvents, and polyethylene glycol as a softener. The solvent ratios and ambient conditions can efficiently change the color of PSDG which makes it strongly selective for the wavelength of transmitted light. Besides, it has a high dielectric constant (10 at 1 kHz), sensitively responding to the electric field. The phase separation degree of PSDG varies with applied electric field, which will induce its transmittance alteration accordingly. The current field sensitive PSDG provides a novel idea for "smart windows". Additionally, varying the size and shape of the electrodes can precisely control the phase separation in PSDG and also enables the function of free writing on flexible materials. Therefore, the designed PSDG has great application potential for flexible touch and interesting interactions.

RESUMO

Differentiating between monozygotic (MZ) twins remains difficult because they have the same genetic makeup. Applying the traditional STR genotyping approach cannot differentiate one from the other. Heteroplasmy refers to the presence of two or more different mtDNA copies within a single cell and this phenomenon is common in humans. The levels of heteroplasmy cannot change dramatically during transmission in the female germ line but increase or decrease during germ-line transmission and in somatic tissues during life. As massively parallel sequencing (MPS) technology has advanced, it has shown the extraordinary quantity of mtDNA heteroplasmy in humans. In this study, a probe hybridization technique was used to obtain mtDNA and then MPS was performed with an average sequencing depth of above 4000. The results showed us that all ten pairs of MZ twins were clearly differentiated with the minor heteroplasmy threshold at 1.0%, 0.5%, and 0.1%, respectively. Finally, we used a probe that targeted mtDNA to boost sequencing depth without interfering with nuclear DNA and this technique can be used in forensic genetics to differentiate the MZ twins.

RESUMO

We explored the application of two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) in single molecule DNA analysis. Two ultrathin COF nanosheets were exfoliated with pore sizes of 1.1 nm (COF-1.1) and 1.3 nm (COF-1.3) and covered closely on a quartz nanopipette with an orifice of 20 ± 5 nm. COF nanopores exhibited high size selectivity for fluorescent dyes and DNA molecules. The transport of long (calf thymus DNA) and short (DNA-80) DNA molecules through the COF nanopores was studied. Because of the strong interaction between DNA bases and the organic backbones of COFs, the DNA-80 was transported through the COF-1.1 nanopore at a speed of 270 µs/base, which is the slowest speed ever observed compared with 2D inorganic nanomaterials. This study shows that the COF nanosheet can work individually as a nanopore monomer with controllable pore size like its biological counterparts.

RESUMO

Nitrogen-heterocycle-based covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are considered promising candidates for the overall photosynthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ). However, the effects of the relative nitrogen locations remain obscured and photocatalytic performances of COFs need to be further improved. Herein, a collection of COFs functionalized by various diazines including pyridazine, pyrimidine, and pyrazine have been judiciously designed and synthesized for photogeneration of H2 O2 without sacrificial agents. Compared with pyrimidine and pyrazine, pyridazine embedded in TpDz tends to stabilize endoperoxide intermediate species, leading toward the more efficient direct 2e- oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) pathway. Benefiting from the effective electron-hole separation, low charge transfer resistance, and high-efficiency ORR pathway, an excellent production rate of 7327 µmol g-1 h-1 and a solar-to-chemical conversion (SCC) value of 0.62 % has been achieved by TpDz, which ranks one of the best COF-based photocatalysts. This work might shed fresh light on the rational design of functional COFs targeting photocatalysts in H2 O2 production.

RESUMO

Covalent organic framework (COF) membranes with tailored functionalities hold great promise in diverse applications, but the key to realize their full advantages of highly ordered pore structures is the development of membrane fabrication approaches. In this work, we report a potential difference-modulated biphasic strategy to fabricate large-area, self-standing COF membranes under ambient conditions. The fabrication was conducted at the polarized water/1,2-dichloroethane (water/DCE) interface, where HCl was dissolved in water as a catalyst and monomers (both amine and aldehyde) were added to DCE. The external polarization of the water/DCE interface by cyclic voltammetry can continuously pump H+ from water to DCE to boost the Schiff base reaction of monomers and the growth of COF membranes. Moreover, the growth process can be real-time-monitored by interfacial double-layer capacitance measurement, and the permeability of COF membranes can be in situ-examined by heterogeneous ion transfer voltammetry. Given that the potential difference across the water/DCE interface can be also facilely modulated by dissolving proper electrolyte ions in two phases, the fabrication of large-area COF membranes is made possible in beakers. Using this strategy and different monomers, three types of centimeter-scale, free-standing COF membranes with tunable pore size and surface functionality were prepared, and their defect-free structure was proved by the molecular permeance and ultrafiltration test. We believe that this biphasic strategy offers a controllable and scalable way to fabricate COF membranes and sheds light on development of novel self-supporting membranes with unique functions.

RESUMO

A crack-free micrometer-sized compact structure of 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene-terephthaldehyde-covalent organic frameworks (TAPB-PDA-COFs) was constructed in situ at the tip of a theta micropipette (TMP). The COF-covered theta micropipette (CTP) then created a stable liquid-gas interface inside COF nanochannels, which was utilized to electrochemically analyze the content and distribution of ammonia gas in the microenvironments. The TMP-based electrochemical ammonia sensor (TEAS) shows a high sensing response, with current increasing linearly from 0 to 50,000 ppm ammonia, owing to the absorption of ammonia gas in the solvent meniscus that connects both barrels of the TEAS. The TEAS also exhibits a short response and recovery time of 5 ± 2 s and 6 ± 2 s, respectively. This response of the ammonia sensor is remarkably stable and repeatable, with a relative standard deviation of 6% for 500 ppm ammonia gas dispensing with humidity control. Due to its fast, reproducible, and stable response to ammonia gas, the TEAS was also utilized as a scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) probe for imaging the distribution of ammonia gas in a microspace. This study unlocks new possibilities for using a TMP in designing microscale probes for gas sensing and imaging.

RESUMO

Ultrathin nanosheets of two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks covered a quartz nanopipette and then acted as a nanopore device for single-molecule DNA sensing. Our results showed that a single DNA homopolymer as short as 6 bases could be detected. The dwell times of 30-mer DNA homopolymers were obviously longer than the times of 10- or 6-mer ones. For different bases, poly(dA)6 showed the slowest transport speed (∼595 µs/base) compared with cytosine (∼355 µs/base) in poly(dC)6 and thymine (∼220 µs/base) in poly(dT)6. Such translocation speeds are the slowest ever reported in two-dimensional material-based nanopores. Poly(dA)6 also showed the biggest current blockade (94.74 pA) compared with poly(dC)6 (79.54 pA) and poly(dT)6 (71.41 pA). However, the present difference in blockade current was not big enough to distinguish the four DNA bases. Our study exhibits the shortest single DNA molecules that can be detected by COF nanopores at the present stage and lights the way for DNA sequencing based on solid-state nanopores.

RESUMO

Pore-structure design with increased ion-diffusion ability is usually regarded as an effective strategy to improve K-storage performance in hard carbon (HC). However, the relationship between porous structure and K+ migration behavior remains unclear and requires further exploration. Herein, a series of chemically activated hard carbon spheres (denoted as AHCSs) with controllable micro/mesopores structure are successfully synthesized to explore intercorrelation between micro/mesopores and K migration behavior. The experimental results indicate AHCSs have two different K+ storage ways, that is, adsorption behavior at high potential region and intercalation process at low potential region. These behaviors are closely related to the pores structure evolution: the micropores afford extra active sites for efficient K-ions adsorption, and therefore positive correlation between micropores and adsorption-contributed capacity is confirmed; the mesopores permit more K-ions intercalation/deintercalation by offering adequate pathways, and as a result positive correlations between mesopores and intercalation-contributed capacity as well as initial Coulombic efficiency are revealed. All these together contribute to achieving excellent reversible capacity, and exceptional rate capability with an ultra-long cycle lifespan in PIBs, and simultaneously exhibit a high energy density as well as considerable cycling stability for potassium-ion full cells. These results promote a fundamental understanding of K+ migration behaviors in hard carbon.

RESUMO

The photoelastic effect has many uses in mechanics today, but it is usually disregarded in flexible materials. Using 2-phenoxyethyl acrylate as a monomer and 4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) as a solvent, a multiple responsive photoelastic organogel (PO) with strong birefringence but low modulus is created. 5CB is a liquid crystal molecule that does not participate in the polymerization process and is always present as tiny molecules in the polymer. It endows the PO low modulus and high birefringence, as well as the ability to drive the birefringence using an electric field. This PO not only has high sensitivity and fast response as a photoelastic strain sensor, but also has a very sensitive response to heat, especially in the range of human body temperature. It also has a high dielectric constant and a strong correlation between the interference color and the applied electric field, allowing for easy writing and erasure of encrypted data. This unique multisignal response feature and low modulus that mimics human skin bring up new opportunities in the potential applications such as multiple information encryption, anticounterfeiting, and multifunctional wearable sensors.

RESUMO

Two-dimensional monolayer materials, with thicknesses of up to several atoms, can be obtained from almost every layer-structured material. It is believed that the catalogs of known 2D materials are almost complete, with fewer new graphene-like materials being discovered. Here, we report 2D graphene-like monolayers from monoxides such as BeO, MgO, CaO, SrO, BaO, and rock-salt structured monochlorides such as LiCl, and NaCl using first-principle calculations. Two-dimensional materials containing d-orbital atoms such as HfO, CdO, and AgCl are predicted. Adopting the same strategy, 2D graphene-like monolayers from mononitrides such as scandium nitride (ScN) and monoselenides such as cadmium selenide (CdSe) are discovered. Stress engineering is found to help stabilize 2D monolayers, through canceling the imaginary frequency of phonon dispersion relation. These 2D monolayers show high dynamic, thermal, kinetic, and mechanic stabilities due to atomic hybridization, and electronic delocalization.

RESUMO

Rechargeable alkali metal-ion batteries (AMIBs) are receiving significant attention owing to their high energy density and low weight. The performance of AMIBs is highly dependent on the electrode materials. It is, therefore, quite crucial to explore suitable electrode materials that can fulfil the future requirements of AMIBs. Herein, a hierarchical hybrid yolk-shell structure of carbon-coated iron selenide microcapsules (FeSe2 @C-3 MCs) is prepared via facile hydrothermal reaction, carbon-coating, HCl solution etching, and then selenization treatment. When used as the conversion-typed anode materials (CTAMs) for AMIBs, the yolk-shell FeSe2 @C-3 MCs show advantages. First, the interconnected external carbon shell improves the mechanical strength of electrodes and accelerates ionic migration and electron transmission. Second, the internal electroactive FeSe2 nanoparticles effectively decrease the extent of volume expansion and avoid pulverization when compared with micro-sized solid FeSe2 . Third, the yolk-shell structure provides sufficient inner void to ensure electrolyte infiltration and mobilize the surface and near-surface reactions of electroactive FeSe2 with alkali metal ions. Consequently, the designed yolk-shell FeSe2 @C-3 MCs demonstrate enhanced electrochemical performance in lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries, and potassium-ion batteries with high specific capacities, long cyclic stability, and outstanding rate capability, presenting potential application as universal anodes for AMIBs.

RESUMO

Considering the omnipresence of microplastics (MPs) in aquatic environments, they are expected to exert significatn impacts as carriers for diverse waterborne pollutants. In this work, the adsorptive behavior of two ionic components (i.e., sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) and Cr(VI)) has been explored against the two types of MPs as model adsorbents, namely poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and polystyrene (PS). The influence of key variables (e.g., pH, particle size, and dose of the MPs) on their adsorption behavior is evaluated from various respects. The maximum adsorption capacity values of SDBS on PET and PS are estimated to be 4.80 and 4.65 mg⋅g-1, respectively, while those of Cr(VI) ions are significantly lower at 0.080 and 0.072 mg⋅g-1, respectively, The adsorptive equilibrium of SDBS is best described in relation to pH and MP size by a Freundlich isotherm. In contrast, the adsorption behavior of Cr(VI) is best accounted for by a Langmuir isotherm to indicate its adsorption across at least two active surface sites.

RESUMO

Post-synthetic modification (PSM) is a prevalent and powerful strategy to introduce desired functionalities into covalent organic frameworks (COFs) for functional products, expediting their applications vastly. Herein, we demonstrate a PSM strategy for functionalizing brominated COFs via the well-developed Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling. By this, a variety of functionalities were installed into COFs efficiently, while the crystallinity and porosity of COFs was well-retained. As a proof-of-concept, BrCOF-2 was modified with trifluoromethyl groups to produce a SF6 adsorbent with remarkably enhanced properties. This facile and versatile approach opens a new door for the synthesis of functional COFs, and greatly expands the scope of their structural design aiming for various properties and applications.

RESUMO

Uncontrolled dendrite formation in the high energy density of lithium (Li) metal batteries (LMBs) may pose serious safety risks. While numerous studies have attempted to protect separators, these proposed methods fail to effectively inhibit upward dendrite growth that punctures through the separator. Here, we introduce a novel "orientated-growth" strategy that transfers the main depositional interface to the anode/current collector interface from the anode/separator interface. We placed a layer of cellulose/graphene carbon composite aerogel (CCA) between the current collector and the anode (LCL-bottom). This layer works as a charge organizer that induces a high current density and encourages Li to deposit at the anode/current collector interface. Both in situ and ex situ images of the electrode demonstrate that the anode part of the cell has been flipped; with the newly deposited particles facing the current collector and the smooth surface facing the separator. The electrode in half and full cells showed outstanding cyclic stability and rate capability, with the LCL-bottom/LFP full cell capable of maintaining 94 % of its initial capacity after 1000 cycles.

RESUMO

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) consist nanochannels that are fundamentally important for their application. Up to now, the effect of gas phase on COF nanochannels are hard to explore. Here, TAPB-PDA-COFs (triphenylbenzene-terephthaldehyde-COFs) was synthesized in situ at the tip of a theta micropipette. The COF-covered theta micropipette (CTP) create a stable gas-liquid interface inside the COF nanochannels, through which the humidity-modulated ion mass transfer in the COF nanochannels can be recorded by recording the current across the two channels of the theta micropipette. Results show that the humid air changes the mobility of the ions inside the COF nanochannels, which leads to the change of ionic current. Humid air showed different effects on the ion transfer depending on the solvent polarity index and vapor pressure. Current decreases linearly with the increase of relative humidity (RH) from 11% to 98%. The CTP was also mounted on the scanning electrochemical microscopy as a probe electrode for mapping micrometer-scale humidity distribution.
