RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Mineralocorticoid receptor blockade could be a potential approach for the inhibition of chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression. The benefits and harms of different mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs) in CKD are inconsistent. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to summarize the benefits and harms of MRAs for CKD patients. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane databases for trials assessing the effects of MRAs on non-dialysis-dependent CKD populations. Treatment and adverse effects were summarized using meta-analysis. RESULTS: Fifty-three trials with 6 different MRAs involving 22,792 participants were included. Compared with the control group, MRAs reduced urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (weighted mean difference [WMD], -90.90 mg/g, 95% CI, -140.17 to -41.64 mg/g), 24-h urinary protein excretion (WMD, -0.20 g, 95% CI, -0.28 to -0.12 g), estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) (WMD, -1.99 mL/min/1.73 m2, 95% CI, -3.28 to -0.70 mL/min/1.73 m2), chronic renal failure events (RR, 0.86, 95% CI, 0.79-0.93), and cardiovascular events (RR, 0.84, 95% CI, 0.77-0.92). MRAs increased the incidence of hyperkalemia (RR, 2.04, 95% CI, 1.73-2.40) and hypotension (RR, 1.80, 95% CI, 1.41-2.31). MRAs reduced the incidence of peripheral edema (RR, 0.65, 95% CI, 0.56-0.75) but not the risk of acute kidney injury (RR, 0.94, 95% CI, 0.79-1.13). Nonsteroidal MRAs (RR, 0.66, 95% CI, 0.57-0.75) but not steroidal MRAs (RR, 0.20, 95% CI, 0.02-1.68) significantly reduced the risk of peripheral edema. Steroidal MRAs (RR, 5.68, 95% CI, 1.26-25.67) but not nonsteroidal MRAs (RR, 0.52, 95% CI, 0.22-1.22) increased the risk of breast disorders. CONCLUSIONS: In the CKD patients, MRAs, particularly in combination with angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor/angiotensin receptor blocker, reduced albuminuria/proteinuria, eGFR, and the incidence of chronic renal failure, cardiovascular and peripheral edema events, whereas increasing the incidence of hyperkalemia and hypotension, without the augment of acute kidney injury events. Nonsteroidal MRAs were superior in the reduction of more albuminuria with fewer peripheral edema events and without the augment of breast disorder events.

RESUMO

Surface property modification of catalyst support is a straightforward approach to optimize the performance of supported noble metal catalysts. In particular, oxygen vacancies and hydroxyl groups play significant roles in promoting noble metal dispersion on catalysts as well as catalytic stability. In this study, we developed a nanoflower-like TiO2-supported Pd catalyst that has a higher concentration of oxygen vacancies and surface hydroxyl groups compared to that of commercial anatase and P25 support. Notably, due to the distinctive structure of the nanoflower-like TiO2, our catalyst exhibited improved dispersion and stabilization of Pd species and the formation of abundant reactive oxygen species, thereby facilitating the activation of CO and O2 molecules. As a result, the catalyst showed remarkable efficiency in catalyzing the low-temperature CO oxidation reaction with a complete CO conversion at 80 °C and stability for over 100 h.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Renal interstitial inflammation often presents in immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN), but its predictive role in kidney disease progression remains controversial. METHODS: This retrospective two-center cohort study included 1,420 adult IgAN patients between January 2003 and May 2018 followed for a median of approximately 7 years at two Chinese hospitals. The predictor was renal interstitial inflammation within the total cortical interstitium (none/mild [0-25%], moderate [26-50%], or severe [>50%]). For the further propensity score matching analyses, the participants with moderate and severe level of interstitial inflammation were pooled to match those with none/mild level of interstitial inflammation. The outcomes included the rate of kidney function decline, and the composite kidney endpoint event defined as a >40% reduction in the estimated glomerular filtration rate, end-stage kidney disease. Linear regression and Cox proportional hazards regression analyses were used to examine the association between interstitial inflammation and the outcomes. The predictive performance of the model also assessed using multivariate logistic regression analyses with the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. Reclassification was assessed using the continuous net reclassification improvement and integrated discrimination improvement adapted for censoring for the assessment of the model with or without interstitial inflammation. RESULTS: For the check of reproducibility, the kappa statistic was 0.71, and intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.77. After adjustment for relating covariates, a higher level of interstitial inflammation was associated with a faster rate of kidney function decline (eGFR slope [mL/min/1.73 m2] of 1.34 [95% CI: -2.56 to 5.23], 3.50 [95% CI: -0.40 to 7.40], and 7.52 [95% CI: 3.02 to 12.01]) in the patients with none/mild, moderate, and severe interstitial inflammation, respectively, in the multivariable linear regression models and with an increased risk of kidney disease progression (HR for moderate vs. none/mild, 1.85; 95% CI: 1.10-3.13; HR for severe vs. none/mild, 2.95; 95% CI: 1.52-5.73) in the multivariable Cox proportional hazards models. Analyses in the propensity score-matched cohort, subgroups, and the sensitive analyses yielded consistent results. The receiver operating curves indicated a higher area under the curve of 0.83 in the model with interstitial inflammation compared with 0.81 in that without interstitial inflammation. In addition, incorporating interstitial inflammation into the International IgAN Risk Prediction Tool improved the diagnostic power of the algorithm to predict risk of progression. CONCLUSION: Interstitial inflammation is a reproducible pathologic parameter that may be adopted as a predictor for kidney disease progression in patients with IgAN.

RESUMO

The United States Environmental Protection Agency's Chemical Transformation Simulator (CTS) platform implemented the first freely available reaction library to predict direct photolysis products of organic contaminants in aquatic systems. However, the initial version of the reaction library did not differentiate the formation likelihood of each predicted product, and therefore, the number of predicted products that are not observed tended to exponentially increase with the prediction generation. To alleviate this problem, we first employed relative reasoning algorithms to remove unlikely products. We then ranked different reaction schemes according to their transformation kinetics and removed slowly forming products. Applying the two strategies improved the precision (the percentage of correctly predicted products over all predicted products) by 34% and 53% for the internal evaluation set and the external evaluation set, respectively, when products from three generations were considered. This improved library also revealed new research directions to improve predictions of the dominant phototransformation products.

RESUMO

Cheminformatics-based applications to predict transformation pathways of environmental contaminants are useful to quickly prioritize contaminants with potentially toxic/persistent products. Direct photolysis can be an important degradation pathway for sunlight-absorbing compounds in aquatic systems. In this study, we developed the first freely available direct phototransformation pathway predictive tool, which uses a rule-based reaction library. Journal publications studying diverse contaminants (such as pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and energetic compounds) were systematically compiled to encode 155 reaction schemes into the reaction library. The execution result of this predictive tool was internally evaluated against 390 compounds from the compiled journal publications and externally evaluated against 138 compounds from the regulatory reports. The recall (sensitivity) and precision (selectivity) were 0.62 and 0.35, respectively, for internal evaluation, and 0.56 and 0.20, respectively, for external evaluation, when only the products formed from the first reaction step were counted. This predictive tool could help to narrow the data gaps in chemical registration/evaluation and inform future experimental studies.

RESUMO

The "science-softCon UV/Vis+ Photochemistry Database" (www.photochemistry.org) is a large and comprehensive collection of EUV-VUV-UV-Vis-NIR spectral data and other photochemical information assembled from published peer-reviewed papers. The database contains photochemical data including absorption, fluorescence, photoelectron, and circular and linear dichroism spectra, as well as quantum yields and photolysis related data that are critically needed in many scientific disciplines. This manuscript gives an outline regarding the structure and content of the "science-softCon UV/Vis+ Photochemistry Database". The accurate and reliable molecular level information provided in this database is fundamental in nature and helps in proceeding further to understand photon, electron and ion induced chemistry of molecules of interest not only in spectroscopy, astrochemistry, astrophysics, Earth and planetary sciences, environmental chemistry, plasma physics, combustion chemistry but also in applied fields such as medical diagnostics, pharmaceutical sciences, biochemistry, agriculture, and catalysis. In order to illustrate this, we illustrate the use of the UV/Vis+ Photochemistry Database in four different fields of scientific endeavor.

RESUMO

Acid mine drainage (AMD) formed from pyrite (iron disulfide) weathering contributes to ecosystem degradation in impacted waters. Solar irradiation has been shown to be an important factor in the biogeochemical cycling of iron in AMD-impacted waters, but its impact on dissolved organic matter (DOM) is unknown. With a typical AMD-impacted water (pH 2.7-3) collected from the Perry State Forest watershed in Ohio, we observed highly efficient (>80%) photochemical mineralization of DOM within hours in a solar simulator resembling twice summer sunlight at 40°N. We confirmed that the mineralization was initially induced by •OH formed from FeOH2+ photodissociation and was inhibited 2-fold by dissolved oxygen removal, suggesting the importance of both the photochemical reaction and oxygen involvement. Size exclusion chromatography and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry elucidated that any remaining organic matter was comprised of smaller and highly aliphatic compounds. The quantitative and qualitative changes in DOM are likely to constitute an important component in regional carbon cycling and nutrient release and to influence downstream aquatic ecosystems in AMD-affected watersheds.

RESUMO

Isoproturon (IPU) is a phenylurea herbicide used to control broad-leaf grasses on grain fields. Photosensitized transformation induced by excited triplet states of dissolved organic matter (3DOM*) has been identified as an important degradation pathway for IPU in sunlit waters, but the reappearance of IPU in the absence of light is observed after the initial photolysis. In this study, we elucidate the kinetics of this photodegradation and dark-reappearance cycling of IPU in the presence of DOM proxies (aromatic ketones and reference fulvic acids). Using mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic techniques, a semi-stable intermediate (IPUint) was found to be responsible for IPU reversion and was identified as a hydroperoxyl derivative of IPU. IPUint is photogenerated from incorporation of diatomic oxygen to IPU and is subjected to thermolysis whose rate depends on temperature, pH, the presence of DOM, and inorganic ions. These results are important to understand the overall aquatic fate of IPU and structurally similar compounds under diurnal conditions.

RESUMO

Siderite, extensively mined as a natural iron mineral, is often discarded as tailings due to the low grade of the ore and due to the high cost of current sorting technologies. Yet, this mineral has demonstrated significant potential in several pivotal areas of the environmental remediation. Siderite not only possesses exceptional adsorption, catalytic, and microbial carrier capabilities but also offers an eco-friendly and cost-effective solution for the environmental pollution management. This article consolidates research advancements and achievements over the past few decades concerning siderite's role in pollution control, delving deeply into its various remediation pathways. Initially, the paper contrasts the performance differences between natural and synthetic siderite, followed by a comprehensive overview of siderite's adsorption mechanisms for various inorganic pollutants. Furthermore, this paper analyzes the unique physicochemical attributes of siderite as both, a reductant and the catalyst, with a special emphasis on its use in the preparation of SCR catalysts and in the catalytic advanced oxidation processes for organic pollutants' degradation. This paper also enumerates and discusses the myriad advantages of siderite as a microbial carrier, thereby enhancing our understanding of biogeochemical cycles and pollutant transformations. In essence, this review systematically elucidates the mechanisms and intrinsic physicochemical properties of siderite in pollution control, paving the way for novel strategies to augment siderite's environmental remediation performance.

RESUMO

Air pollutants from residential solid fuel combustion are attracting growing public concern. Field measured emission factors (EFs) of various air pollutants for solid fuels are close to the reality and urgently needed for better emission estimations. In this study, emission factors of particulate matter (PM), organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and various polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from residential combustions of coal briquette, coal cake, and wood were measured in rural Heshun County, China. The measured EFs of PM, OC, and EC were 8.1-8.5, 2.2-3.6, 0.91-1.6 g/kg for the wood burnt in a simple metal stove, 0.54-0.64, 0.13-0.14, 0.040-0.0041 g/kg for the briquette burned in an improved stove with a chimney, and 3.2-8.5, 0.38-0.58, 0.022-0.052 g/kg for the homemade coal cake combusted in a brick stove with a flue, respectively. EFs of 28 parent PAHs, 4 oxygenated PAHs, and 9 nitro-PAHs were 182-297, 7.8-10, 0.14-0.55 mg/kg for the wood, 14-16, 1.7-2.6, 0.64-0.83 mg/kg for the briquette, and 168-223, 4.7-9.5, 0.16-2.4 mg/kg for the coal cake, respectively. Emissions from the wood and coal cake combustions were much higher than those for the coal briquette, especially true for high molecular weight PAHs. Most EFs measured in the field were higher than those measured in stove combustions under laboratory conditions.

RESUMO

The oxidation of the emerging nanomaterial black phosphorus (BP) affected by pH and oxygen has been carefully documented. However, in natural waters, there is a large amount of chemically reactive organic matters like fulvic acid (FA), whose impacts on degradation and stability of few-layer BP or BP nanosheets (BPNS) are scarcely disclosed. Hence, we investigated the kinetics of BPNS degradation products (H2PO2-, HPO32-, and PO43-) in the presence of FA. The results showed that the apparent reaction rate constants of BPNS were 0.026, 0.050, and 0.060 d-1 under oxygen-and-light condition and 0.005, 0.016, and 0.023 d-1 under hypoxia-and-darkness condition at FA gradients of 0, 2.5, and 5 mgC/L, respectively. Microscopic observations, simple molecular simulation experiment, and density functional theory computation explained that FA significantly enhanced the degradation of P atoms on the BPNS surface through the indirect pathway of reducing the energy barrier of O2 dissociative adsorption and the direct pathway of chemical adsorption, which caused the P-P bond on the BPNS surface to break down and formed P-O bonds or C-P bonds. This study revealed for the first time the degradation mechanism of BPNS in the presence of FA, which is a chemical mechanism of the BPNS transformation behavior. It helps to make a more scientific risk assessment of BP in natural waters.

RESUMO

Introduction: Selenium is a critical trace element with antioxidant activities that has been related to the preservation of kidney function. Few studies, however, have looked at the effects of excess selenium on kidneys. The purpose of the present study was performed to investigate the relationship between dietary selenium intake and the prevalence of microalbuminuria in American adults with obesity. Methods: A total of 8,547 participants with obesity in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) with the age of 19 years or older were included in the present study. Multivariable regression and subgroup analyses were performed to examine the association between dietary selenium and microalbuminuria in the two genders, separately. A selenium intake above the median was defined as high selenium intake. Results: Dietary selenium intake was significantly higher in men compared to women (139.49 µg/day vs. 101.06 µg/day; P < 0.0001). Among female participants, the prevalence of microalbuminuria was significantly higher in participants with a high selenium intake compared with those without a high selenium intake (13.82 vs. 9.96%; P = 0.008), whereas this difference did not exist in male participants (10.79 vs. 11.97%; P = 0.40). Dietary selenium is not significantly correlated with microalbuminuria (P = 0.68) in the male population, whereas each 1 µg/day of increase in selenium consumption was independently associated with a 6h higher risk of microalbuminuria (OR = 1.006; 95% CI, 1.001-1.011, P = 0.01) in females. Conclusion: According to our research, excessive selenium consumption is positively correlated with microalbuminuria in females with obesity, but not in males with obesity.

RESUMO

With the development of internet of things and artificial intelligence electronics, metal oxide semiconductor (MOS)-based sensing materials have attracted increasing attention from both fundamental research and practical applications. MOS materials possess intrinsic physicochemical properties, tunable compositions, and electronic structure, and are particularly suitable for integration and miniaturization in developing chemiresistive gas sensors. During sensing processes, the dynamic gas-solid interface interactions play crucial roles in improving sensors' performance, and most studies emphasize the gas-MOS chemical reactions. Herein, from a new view angle focusing more on physical gas-solid interactions during gas sensing, basic theory overview and latest progress for the dynamic process of gas molecules including adsorption, desorption, and diffusion, are systematically summarized and elucidated. The unique electronic sensing mechanisms are also discussed from various aspects including molecular interaction models, gas diffusion mechanism, and interfacial reaction behaviors, where structure-activity relationship and diffusion behavior are overviewed in detail. Especially, the surface adsorption-desorption dynamics are discussed and evaluated, and their potential effects on sensing performance are elucidated from the gas-solid interfacial regulation perspective. Finally, the prospect for further research directions in improving gas dynamic processes in MOS gas sensors is discussed, aiming to supplement the approaches for the development of high-performance MOS gas sensors.

RESUMO

Neurologic autoimmune disorders affect people's physical and mental health seriously. Glial cells, as an important part of the nervous system, play a vital role in the occurrence of neurologic autoimmune disorders. Glial cells can be hyperactivated in the presence of autoantibodies or pathological changes, to influence neurologic autoimmune disorders. This review is mainly focused on the roles of glial cells in neurologic autoimmune disorders and the influence of autoantibodies produced by autoimmune disorders on glial cells. We speculate that the possibility of glial cells might be a novel way for the investigation and therapy of neurologic autoimmune disorders.

RESUMO

Iron (Fe) plays a critical role in the formation of hydroxyl radical (OH) which may participate in the indirect photodegradation of aquatic contaminants. While Fe photochemistry has been extensively studied, the efficacy of iron amendments for contaminant attenuation in sunlit natural waters has not been well researched. We studied the efficacy of this approach by monitoring OH induced acetochlor (AC) degradation and determining OH production rates with terephthalate (TPA) as a probe. Surface wetland waters as well as model fulvic acid (FA) solutions were amended with Fe(III) salt at different concentrations at pH values of 2.7, 5, and 7.6. We observed no significant enhancement in the AC degradation rate at circumneutral pH. At pH 5, AC degradation increased by more than 50% with an Fe addition up to an [Fe]T ≈ 6 µM and plateaued at high [Fe]T. At the highly acidic pH of acid mine drainage (AMD) waters, AC degradation was enhanced by two-orders-of magnitude with increasing [Fe]T and no plateau was observed under the conditions tested ([Fe]T ≤ 500 µM). While the Fe induced relative difference in OH production rates determined using TPA was useful in elucidating the reaction mechanism for different dissolved organic matter types at different pH values, the absolute value of OH production rates over-predicted the transformation of AC suggesting the existence of unknown side reactions and/or alternative reactive intermediates.

RESUMO

Personal exposure to size-segregated particles among rural residents in Shanxi, China in summer, 2011 were investigated using portable carried samplers (N = 84). Household air pollution was simultaneously studied using stationary samplers in nine homes. Information on household fuel types, cooking activity, smoking behavior, kitchen ventilation conditions etc., were also collected and discussed. The study found that even in the summer period, the daily average concentrations of PM2.5 and PM1.0 in the kitchen were as high as 376 ± 573 and 288 ± 397 µg/m3 (N = 6), that were nearly 3 times of 114 ± 81 and 97 ± 77 µg/m3 in the bedroom (N = 8), and significantly higher than those of 64 ± 28 and 47 ± 21 µg/m3 in the outdoor air (N = 6). The personal daily exposure to PM2.5 and PM1.0 were 98 ± 52 and 77 ± 47 µg/m3, respectively, that were lower than the concentrations in the kitchen but higher than the outdoor levels. The mass fractions of PM2.5 in TSP were 90%, 72%, 65% and 68% on average in the kitchen, bedroom, outdoor air and personal inhalation exposure, respectively, and moreover, a majority of particles in PM2.5 had diameters less than 1.0 µm. Calculated time-weighted average exposure based on indoor and outdoor air concentrations and time spent indoor and outdoor were positively correlated but, was ∼33% lower than the directly measured exposure. The daily exposure among those burning traditional solid fuels could be lower by ∼41% if the kitchen was equipped with an outdoor chimney, but was still 8-14% higher than those household using cleaning energies, like electricity and gas. With a ventilator in the kitchen, the exposure among the population using clean energies could be further reduced by 10-24%.

RESUMO

Atmospheric PM10 were measured for 12 months at 18 sites along a 2500 km profile across northern China. Annual mean PM10 concentrations in urban, rural village, and rural field sites were 180 ± 171, 182 ± 154, and 128 ± 89 µg/m(3), respectively. The similarities in PM10 concentrations between urban and rural village sites suggest that strong localized emissions and severe contamination in rural residential areas are derived from solid fuels combustion in households. High PM10 concentrations in Wuwei and Taiyuan were caused by either sandstorms or industrial activities. Relatively low PM10 concentrations were observed in coastal areas of Dalian and Yantai. Particulate air pollution was much higher in winter and spring than in summer and fall. Multiple regression analysis indicates that 35% of the total variance can be attributed to sandstorms, precipitation and residential energy consumption. Over 40% of the measurements in both urban and rural village areas exceeded the national ambient air quality standard.
