RESUMO

As a key structural parameter, phase depicts the arrangement of atoms in materials. Normally, a nanomaterial exists in its thermodynamically stable crystal phase. With the development of nanotechnology, nanomaterials with unconventional crystal phases, which rarely exist in their bulk counterparts, or amorphous phase have been prepared using carefully controlled reaction conditions. Together these methods are beginning to enable phase engineering of nanomaterials (PEN), i.e., the synthesis of nanomaterials with unconventional phases and the transformation between different phases, to obtain desired properties and functions. This Review summarizes the research progress in the field of PEN. First, we present representative strategies for the direct synthesis of unconventional phases and modulation of phase transformation in diverse kinds of nanomaterials. We cover the synthesis of nanomaterials ranging from metal nanostructures such as Au, Ag, Cu, Pd, and Ru, and their alloys; metal oxides, borides, and carbides; to transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and 2D layered materials. We review synthesis and growth methods ranging from wet-chemical reduction and seed-mediated epitaxial growth to chemical vapor deposition (CVD), high pressure phase transformation, and electron and ion-beam irradiation. After that, we summarize the significant influence of phase on the various properties of unconventional-phase nanomaterials. We also discuss the potential applications of the developed unconventional-phase nanomaterials in different areas including catalysis, electrochemical energy storage (batteries and supercapacitors), solar cells, optoelectronics, and sensing. Finally, we discuss existing challenges and future research directions in PEN.

RESUMO

Aromatic aldehydes are widely used for the construction of covalent organic frameworks (COFs). However, due to the high flexibility, high steric hindrance, and low reactivity, it remains challenging to synthesize COFs using ketones as building units, especially the highly flexible aliphatic ones. Here, the single nickel site coordination strategy is reported to lock the configurations of the highly flexible diketimine to transform discrete oligomers or amorphous polymers into highly crystalline nickel-diketimine-linked COFs (named as Ni-DKI-COFs). The strategy has been successfully extended to the synthesis of a series of Ni-DKI-COFs by the condensation of three flexible diketones with two tridentate amines. Thanks to the ABC stacking model with high amount and easily accessible single nickel (II) sites on their 1D channels, Ni-DKI-COFs are exploited as well-defined electrocatalyst platforms for efficiently electro-upgrading biomass-derived 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into value-added 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) with a 99.9% yield and a 99.5% faradaic efficiency as well as a high turnover frequency of 0.31 s-1 .

RESUMO

Two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) possess designable pore architectures but limited framework topologies. Until now, 2D COFs adopting the kgd topology with ordered and rhombic pore geometry have rarely been reported. Here, an isoreticular series of 2D COFs with the kgd topology and controllable pore size is synthesized by employing a C6-symmetric aldehyde, i.e., hexa(4-formylphenyl)benzene (HFPB), and C3-symmetric amines i.e., tris(4-aminophenyl)amine (TAPA), tris(4-aminophenyl)trazine (TAPT), and 1,3,5-tris[4-amino(1,1-biphenyl-4-yl)]benzene (TABPB), as building units, referred to as HFPB-TAPA, HFPB-TAPT, and HFPB-TABPB, respectively. The micropore dimension down to 6.7 Å is achieved in HFPB-TAPA, which is among the smallest pore size of reported 2D COFs. Impressively, both the in-plane network and stacking sequence of the 2D COFs can be clearly observed by low-dose electron microscopy. Integrating the unique kgd topology with small rhombic micropores, these 2D COFs are endowed with both short molecular diffusion length and favorable host-guest interaction, exhibiting potential for drug delivery with high loading and good release control of ibuprofen.

RESUMO

Facilitating the mass transfer and spatial charge separation is a great challenge for achieving efficient oxidation of NO and outstanding sulfur resistance. Herein, a hydrothermal-assisted confinement growth technique is used to fabricate well-defined three-dimensional CuOx@MnOx hetero-shelled hollow-structure catalysts. By integrating the coupled plasma space reactor and the porous hierarchical structure of the catalyst, excellent stability (10 h) and high conversion of NO (93.86%) are reached under the concentration of SO2 (1000 mg m-3 ) and NO (200 mg m-3 ). Impressively, precise surface characterization and detailed density functional theory calculations show that the spatial hetero-shelled micro-reactor can orient the redox pairs transportation, facilitating the combination of NO with the surface coordinately unsaturated O atoms, and also prevent the poisoning of SO2 molecules due to the curvature and surface charge effect in the non-thermal plasma equipment.

RESUMO

Owing to the limited availability of natural sources, the widespread demand of the flavouring, perfume and pharmaceutical industries for unsaturated alcohols is met by producing them from α,ß-unsaturated aldehydes, through the selective hydrogenation of the carbon-oxygen group (in preference to the carbon-carbon group). However, developing effective catalysts for this transformation is challenging, because hydrogenation of the carbon-carbon group is thermodynamically favoured. This difficulty is particularly relevant for one major category of heterogeneous catalyst: metal nanoparticles supported on metal oxides. These systems are generally incapable of significantly enhancing the selectivity towards thermodynamically unfavoured reactions, because only the edges of nanoparticles that are in direct contact with the metal-oxide support possess selective catalytic properties; most of the exposed nanoparticle surfaces do not. This has inspired the use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to encapsulate metal nanoparticles within their layers or inside their channels, to influence the activity of the entire nanoparticle surface while maintaining efficient reactant and product transport owing to the porous nature of the material. Here we show that MOFs can also serve as effective selectivity regulators for the hydrogenation of α,ß-unsaturated aldehydes. Sandwiching platinum nanoparticles between an inner core and an outer shell composed of an MOF with metal nodes of Fe3+, Cr3+ or both (known as MIL-101; refs 19, 20, 21) results in stable catalysts that convert a range of α,ß-unsaturated aldehydes with high efficiency and with significantly enhanced selectivity towards unsaturated alcohols. Calculations reveal that preferential interaction of MOF metal sites with the carbon-oxygen rather than the carbon-carbon group renders hydrogenation of the former by the embedded platinum nanoparticles a thermodynamically favoured reaction. We anticipate that our basic design strategy will allow the development of other selective heterogeneous catalysts for important yet challenging transformations.

RESUMO

Selective organic transformations using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and MOF-based heterogeneous catalysts have been an intriguing but challenging research topic in both the chemistry and materials communities. Analogous to the reaction specificity achieved in enzyme pockets, MOFs are also powerful platforms for regulating the catalytic selectivity via engineering their catalytic microenvironments, such as metal node alternation, ligand functionalization, pore decoration, topology variation and others. In this review, we provide a comprehensive introduction and discussion about the role of MOFs played in regulating and even boosting the size-, shape-, chemo-, regio- and more appealing stereo-selectivity in organic transformations. We hope that it will be instructive for researchers in this field to rationally design, conveniently prepare and elaborately functionalize MOFs or MOF-based composites for the synthesis of high value-added organic chemicals with significantly improved selectivity.

RESUMO

Amomum villosum, serving as an important medicinal material, is complex in the genetic background of germplasm resources. Exploring the genetic diversity and genetic relationship of germplasm resources is conducive to clarifying the germplasm source and genetic background of A. villosum, so as to improve the efficiency of parent selection and variety breeding of A. villosum. Seventy-one pairs of SSR primers were used for PCR amplification of 84 A. villosum samples by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Fifty-four pairs of SSR primers with high polymorphism were screened out for the analysis of genetic diversity. The results showed that 293 alleles were detected from 84 germplasm resources by 54 pairs of SSR primers, with an average of 5.32 alleles for each pair of primers, and a variation range of 3-8, and the primer AVL12 marked the highest number of alleles. The PIC value of each locus varied from 0.068 7 to 0.828 9, with an average of 0.529 9, and the highest was marked by AVL24. The genetic diversity of A. villosum was the highest in Yunnan, followed by Guangxi, and the lowest was found in Guangdong. The population structure analysis and cluster analysis showed that the samples were classified into two groups. In terms of origin, samples from Yunnan and Guangxi had a close genetic relationship, and there was no obvious differentiation of A, villosum resources from different origins. In this study, 54 pairs of SSR markers were used to analyze the genetic diversity and population structure of 84 germplasm resources, which can reflect the genetic relationship between A. villosum samples from different germplasm sources and different populations, thus providing a theoretical basis for the collection, research, and breeding of A. villosum resources.

RESUMO

Construction of 2D transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD)-based epitaxial heterostructures with different compositions is important for various promising applications, including electronics, photonics, and catalysis. However, the rational design and controlled synthesis of such kind of heterostructures still remain challenge, especially for those consisting of layered TMDs and other non-layered materials. Here, a facile one-pot, wet-chemical method is reported to synthesize Cu2- χ Sy Se1- y -MoS2 heterostructures in which two types of different epitaxial configurations, i.e., vertical and lateral epitaxies, coexist. The chalcogen ratio (S/Se) in Cu2- χ Sy Se1- y and the loading amount of MoS2 in the heterostructures can be tuned. Impressively, the obtained Cu2- χ Sy Se1- y -MoS2 heterostructures can be transformed to CdSy Se1- y -MoS2 without morphological change via cation exchange. As a proof-of-concept application, the obtained CdSy Se1- y -MoS2 heterostructures with controllable compositions are used as photocatalysts, exhibiting distinctive catalytic activities toward the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution under visible light irradiation. The method paves the way for the synthesis of different TMD-based lateral epitaxial heterostructures with unique properties for various applications.

RESUMO

Metal-organic framework (MOF) heterostructures have shown promising applications in gas adsorption, gas separation, catalysis, and energy, arising from the synergistic effect of each component. However, owing to the difficulty in controlling the size, shape, nucleation, and growth of MOFs, it remains a great challenge to construct MOF heterostructures with precisely controlled orientation, morphology, dimensionality, and spatial distribution of each component. Here, we report a seeded epitaxial growth method to prepare a series of hierarchical MOF heterostructures by engineering the structures, sizes, dimensionalities, morphologies, and lattice parameters of both MOF seeds and the secondary MOFs. In these heterostructures, PCN-222 (also known as MOF-545) nanorods selectively grow along the major axis of the ellipsoid-like PCN-608 nanoparticles, on the two end facets of the hexagonal prism-like NU-1000 nanorods, and on the two basal planes of the hexagonal PCN-134 nanoplates, while Zr-BTB nanosheets selectively grow on the six edge facets of PCN-134 nanoplates. The selective epitaxial growth of MOFs opens the way to synthesize different hierarchical heterostructures with tunable architectures and dimensionalities, which could process various promising applications.

RESUMO

Creating molecular networks with different topologies using identical molecular linkers is fundamentally important but requires precise chemistry control. Here, we propose an effective strategy to regulate the network topologies of two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) through the conformational switching of molecular linkages. By simply altering the substituents of an identical molecular linker, the topology-selective synthesis of two highly crystalline 2D COFs can be readily achieved. Their distinct crystal structures are observed and determined by low-dose, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy imaging, indicating that the driving force for linkage conformation switching is intramolecular hydrogen bonding. Our strategy would greatly diversify the COF topologies and enable vast postsynthetic modifications such as boron complexation, endowing these structures with a unique optical property such as fluorescence turn on and aggregation-induced emission.

RESUMO

Understanding the reaction mechanism for the catalytic process is essential to the rational design and synthesis of highly efficient catalysts. MoS2 has been reported to be an efficient catalyst toward the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), but it still lacks direct experimental evidence to reveal the mechanism for MoS2-catalyzed electrochemical HER process at the atomic level. In this work, we develop a wet-chemical synthetic method to prepare the single-layer MoS2-coated polyhedral Ag core-shell heterostructure (Ag@MoS2) with tunable sizes as efficient catalysts for the electrochemical HER. The Ag@MoS2 core-shell heterostructures are used as ideal platforms for the real-time surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) study owing to the strong electromagnetic field generated in the plasmonic Ag core. The in situ SERS results provide solid Raman spectroscopic evidence proving the S-H bonding formation on the MoS2 surface during the HER process, suggesting that the S atom of MoS2 is the catalytic active site for the electrochemical HER. It paves the way on the design and synthesis of heterostructures for exploring their catalytic mechanism at atomic level based on the in situ SERS measurement.

RESUMO

Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets are attracting increasing research attention due to their unique properties originating from their ultrathin thickness, large surface area and high surface-to-volume atom ratios. Many great advances have been made in the synthesis and application of 2D MOF nanosheets over the past few years. In this review, we summarize the recent advances in the synthesis of 2D MOF nanosheets by using top-down methods, e.g. sonication exfoliation, mechanical exfoliation, Li-intercalation exfoliation and chemical exfoliation, and bottom-up methods, i.e. interfacial synthesis, three-layer synthesis, surfactant-assisted synthesis, modulated synthesis, and sonication synthesis. In addition, the recent progress in 2D MOF nanosheet-based nanocomposites is also briefly introduced. The potential applications of 2D MOF nanosheets in gas separation, energy conversion and storage, catalysis, sensors and biomedicine are discussed. Finally, we give our personal insights into the challenges and opportunities for the future research of 2D MOF nanosheets and their composites.

RESUMO

Chiral metal-organic framework (CMOF) nanosheets only a few layers thick remain a virgin land waiting for exploration. Herein, the first examples of ultrathin CMOF nanosheets are prepared by the confinement growth of two-dimensional (2D) chiral layers, which are assembled by helical metal-organic chains within microemulsion. This convenient and easily scaled up inverse microemulsion method gives a series of 2D CMOF nanosheets composed of variable metal nodes or chiral ligands. More significantly, thanks to the exceptionally large number of chiral sites exposed on surfaces, the as-obtained CMOF nanosheets exhibit much higher enantioselectivity in chiral separation compared with their bulk counterparts.

RESUMO

The ability to prepare ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic framework (COF) nanosheets (NSs) in high yield is of great importance for the further exploration of their unique properties and potential applications. Herein, by elaborately designing and choosing two flexible molecules with C3v molecular symmetry as building units, a novel imine-linked COF, namely, TPA-COF, with a hexagonal layered structure and sheet-like morphology, is synthesized. Since the flexible building units are integrated into the COF skeletons, the interlayer stacking becomes weak, resulting in the easy exfoliation of TPA-COF into ultrathin 2D NSs. Impressively, for the first time, the detailed structural information, i.e., the pore channels and individual building units in the NSs, is clearly visualized by using the recently developed low-dose imaging technique of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). As a proof-of-concept application, the obtained ultrathin COF NSs are used as a novel fluorescence sensing platform for the highly sensitive and selective detection of DNA.

RESUMO

Hetero-nanostructures featured with both strong plasmon absorption and high catalytic activity are believed to be ideal platforms to realize efficient light-driven catalysis. However, in reality, it remains a great challenge to acquire high-performance catalysis in such hetero-nanostructures due to poor generation and transfer of plamson-induced hot electrons. In this report, we demonstrate that Au nanorod@Pd superstructures (Au@Pd SSs), where the ordered Pd nanoarrays are precisely grown on Au nanorod surfaces via solution-based seed-mediated approach, would be an excellent solution for this challenge. Both experiment and theory disclose that the ordered arrangement of Pd on Au nanorod surfaces largely promotes hot electron generation and transfer via amplified local electromagnetic field and decreased electron-phonon coupling, respectively. Each effect is separately highlighted in experiments by the significant plasmon-enhanced catalytic activity of Au@Pd SSs in two types of important reactions with a distinct time scale of bond-dissociation event: molecular oxygen activation and carbon-carbon coupling reaction. This work opens the door to design and application of new generation photocatalysts.

RESUMO

The incorporation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) into membrane-shaped architectures is of great importance for practical applications. The currently synthesized MOF-based membranes show many disadvantages, such as poor compatibility, low dispersity, and instability, which severely limit their utility. Herein, we present a general, facile, and robust approach for the synthesis of MOF-based composite membranes through the in situ growth of MOF plates in the channels of anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes. After being used as catalysis reactors, they exhibit high catalytic performance and stability in the Knoevenagel condensation reaction. The high catalytic performance might be attributed to the intrinsic structure of MOF-based composite membranes, which can remove the products from the reaction zone quickly, and prevent the aggregation and loss of catalysts during reaction and recycling process.

RESUMO

Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets are attracting increasing research interest. Here, for the first time, we report the facile synthesis of 2D porphyrin paddlewheel framework-3 (PPF-3) MOF nanosheets with thickness of ca. 12-43 nm. Through the simultaneous sulfidation and carbonization of PPF-3 MOF nanosheets, we have prepared the 2D nanocomposite of CoS1.097 nanoparticles (NPs) and nitrogen-doped carbon, referred to as CoSNC, in which the CoS1.097 NPs with size of ca. 10 nm are embedded in the nitrogen-doped carbon matrix. As a proof-of-concept application, the obtained 2D CoSNC nanocomposite is used as an electrode material for a supercapacitor, which exhibits a specific capacitance of 360.1 F g(-1) at a current density of 1.5 A g(-1). Moreover, the composite electrode also shows high rate capability. Its specific capacitance delivered at a current density of 30.0 A g(-1) retains 56.8% of the value at 1.5 A g(-1).

RESUMO

Despite unique properties of layered transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) nanosheets, there is still lack of a facile and general strategy for the preparation of TMD nanodots (NDs). Reported herein is the preparation of a series of TMD NDs, including TMD quantum dots (e.g. MoS2 , WS2 , ReS2 , TaS2 , MoSe2 and WSe2 ) and NbSe2 NDs, from their bulk crystals by using a combination of grinding and sonication techniques. These NDs could be easily separated from the N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone when post-treated with n-hexane and then chloroform. All the TMD NDs with sizes of less than 10 nm show a narrow size distribution with high dispersity in solution. As a proof-of-concept application, memory devices using TMD NDs, for example, MoSe2 , WS2 , or NbSe2 , mixed with polyvinylpyrrolidone as active layers, have been fabricated, which exhibit a nonvolatile write-once-read-many behavior. These high-quality TMD NDs should have various applications in optoelectronics, solar cells, catalysis, and biomedicine.

RESUMO

Uniform core-shell Pd@IRMOF-3 nanostructures, where single Pd nanoparticle core is surrounded by amino-functionalized IRMOF-3 shell, are prepared by a facile mixed solvothermal method. When used as multifunctional catalysts, the Pd@IRMOF-3 nanocomposites exhibit high activity, enhanced selectivity, and excellent stability in the cascade reaction. Both experimental evidence and theoretical calculations reveal that the high catalytic performance of Pd@IRMOF-3 nanocomposites originates from their unique core-shell structures.
