RESUMO

The analysis of the shift in photoluminescence emission for a blend of polyvinylcarbazole and acrylonitrile derivative compounds is reported. The small-molecule compounds have different functional groups, phenyl, pyridine, or methyl phenyl, attached to an acrylonitrile group. According to the functional group, the blue emission for pure dye shifts to green or yellowish in the blend film. Several PVK:dye ratios from 0:100 to 20:80 were used for film deposition. The film morphology was analyzed by atomic force microscopy; for low dye content, homogeneous films were achieved. However, aggregates of several micrometers are formed on the surface of films with higher dye concentrations. The shift in emission occurs only with PVK, and for a non-conjugated matrix such as polystyrene, the emission remains unchanged. The interaction of dyes with PVK leading to change in emission was also achieved by grinding dye and polymer. Results showed that shifts in emission could come from exciplex formation along with changes in dye intermolecular interactions. The blend films were highly transparent in the visible spectra due to the absorption in the UV region for dye and matrix. The films with ratio PVK: dye ratio 80:20 was used as active layer in OLEDs.

RESUMO

The degradation of persistent and refractory pollutants, particularly plastic and resins manufacturing wastewater, poses a significant challenge due to their high toxicity and high concentrations. This study developed a novel hybrid ACoO3 (A = La, Ce, Sr)/PMS perovskite system for the treatment of multicomponent (MCs; ACN, ACM and ACY) from synthetic resin manufacturing wastewater. Synthesized perovskites were characterized by various techniques i.e., BET, XRD, FESEM with EDAX, FTIR, TEM, XPS, EIS, and Tafel analysis. Perovskite LaCoO3 exhibited the highest degradation of MCs i.e., ACN (98.7%), ACM (86.3%), and ACY (56.4%), with consumption of PMS (95.2%) under the optimal operating conditions (LaCoO3 dose 0.8 g/L, PMS dose 2 g/L, pH 7.2 and reaction temperature 55 °C). The quantitative contribution (%) of reactive oxygen species (ROS) reveals that SO4•- are the dominating radical species, which contribute to ACN (58.3% for SO4•- radicals) and ACM degradation (46.4% for SO4•- radicals). The tafel plots and EIS spectra demonstrated that perovskites LaCoO3 have better charge transfer rates and more reactive sites that are favorable for PMS activation. Further, four major degradation pathways were proposed based on Fukui index calculations, as well as GC-MS characterization of intermediate byproducts. Based on a stability and reusability study, it was concluded that LaCoO3 perovskites are highly stable, and minimal cobalt leaching occurs (0.96 mg/L) after four cycles. The eco-toxicity assessment performed using QSAR model indicated that the byproducts of the LaCoO3/PMS system are non-toxic nature to common organism (i.e., fish, daphnids and green algae). In addition, the cost of the hybrid LaCoO3/PMS system in a single cycle was estimated to be $34.79 per cubic meter of resin wastewater.

RESUMO

We previously discovered WS-6 as a new antidepressant in correlation to its function of stimulating neurogenesis. Herein, several different scaffolds (stilbene, 1,3-diphenyl 1-propene, 1,3-diphenyl 2-propene, 1,2-diphenyl acrylo-1-nitrile, 1,2-diphenyl acrylo-2-nitrile, 1,3-diphenyl trimethylamine), further varied through substitutions of twelve amide substituents plus the addition of a methylene unit and an inverted amide, were examined to elucidate the SARs for promoting adult rat neurogenesis. Most of the compounds could stimulate proliferation of progenitors, but just a few chemicals possessing a specific structural profile, exemplified by diphenyl acrylonitrile 29b, 32a, and 32b, showed better activity than the clinical drug NSI-189 in promoting newborn cells differentiation into mature neurons. The most potent diphenyl acrylonitrile 32b had an excellent brain AUC to plasma AUC ratio (B/P = 1.6), suggesting its potential for further development as a new lead.

RESUMO

An interconnected sponge structure and porous surface poly (acrylonitrile-co-methyl acrylate) (P(AN-MA)) microfiltration membranes (MF) were fabricated via thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) by using caprolactam (CPL), and acetamide (AC) as the mixed diluent. When the ternary system was composed of 15 wt.% P(AN-MA), 90 wt.% CPL, and 10 wt.% AC and formed in a 25 °C air bath, the membrane exhibited the highest water flux of 8107 L/m2·h. The P(AN-MA) membrane contained hydrophobic groups (-COOCH3) and hydrophilic groups (-CN), leading it to exhibit oleophobic properties underwater and hydrophobic properties in oil. The membrane demonstrates efficient separation of immiscible oil/water mixtures. The pure water flux of the petroleum ether/water mixture measured 870 L/m2·h, and the pure oil flux of the petroleum tetrachloride/water mixture measured 1230 L/m2·h under the influence of gravity. Additionally, the recovery efficiency of diluents through recrystallization was 85.3%, significantly reducing potential pollution and production costs.

RESUMO

The expansive utility of polymeric 3D-printing technologies and demand for high- performance lightweight structures has prompted the emergence of various carbon-reinforced polymer composite filaments. However, detailed characterization of the processing-microstructure-property relationships of these materials is still required to realize their full potential. In this study, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and two carbon-reinforced ABS variants, with either carbon nanotubes (CNT) or 5 wt.% chopped carbon fiber (CF), were designed in a bio-inspired honeycomb geometry. These structures were manufactured by fused filament fabrication (FFF) and investigated across a range of layer thicknesses and hexagonal (hex) sizes. Microscopy of material cross-sections was conducted to evaluate the relationship between print parameters and porosity. Analyses determined a trend of reduced porosity with lower print-layer heights and hex sizes compared to larger print-layer heights and hex sizes. Mechanical properties were evaluated through compression testing, with ABS specimens achieving higher compressive yield strength, while CNT-ABS achieved higher ultimate compressive strength due to the reduction in porosity and subsequent strengthening. A trend of decreasing strength with increasing hex size across all materials was supported by the negative correlation between porosity and increasing print-layer height and hex size. We elucidated the potential of honeycomb ABS, CNT-ABS, and ABS-5wt.% CF polymer composites for novel 3D-printed structures. These studies were supported by the development of a predictive classification and regression supervised machine learning model with 0.92 accuracy and a 0.96 coefficient of determination to help inform and guide design for targeted performance.

RESUMO

The fully regio- and stereoselective Zn-catalyzed hydrocyanation of ynamides is reported and represents a general access to various trisubstituted E-α-enamidonitriles. The catalyst-free photoisomerization selectively yields the energetically comparable Z-stereoisomer. Finally, the synthetic potential of these new α-enamidonitriles was evaluated through the synthesis of original heterocycles.

RESUMO

Small organic molecules which can emit fluorescence with tunable dual emission bands are significant for fundamental research and broad applications. In this work, two binaphthyl based arylacrylonitrile derivatives with pyrene and triphenylamine unit (BiNp-Py and BiNp-TPA) were designed and synthesized, respectively, featuring chiral backbone and dual AIE-active cyanostyrene-linked chromophores. Excellent fluorescence emissions in a range of solution and solid states were observed with high quantum yields, indicative of the solvatochromism and mechanochromism. More interestingly, dual emission bands were found and tunable by the water fraction in THF, and speculatively attributed to the balancing of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and locally excited (LE) emission in solution and aggregate states. Furthermore, the potential application in anti-counterfeiting ink was also explored, indicating the very low concentration (5 ppm) for sufficient distinguishable vision and small colour migration (28 nm) for printing on the filter. The present work provides a new strategy to design organic luminescent structure having widely fluorescent emissions in dual states and a valuable reference for the study of chiral optical materials.

RESUMO

Given the rise in both usage and disposal of dangerous electronics, there is a catastrophic rise in assemblage of electronic waste (e-waste). E-waste including various plastic resins are among the most frequently discarded materials in electronic gadgets. In current digital era, managing e-waste has become universal concern. From the viewpoint of persisting lacuna of e-waste managing methods, the current study is designed to fabricate an eco-friendly e-waste treatment with native soil bacteria employing an enrichment culture method. In the presence of e-waste, indigenous soil microbes were stimulated to degrade e-waste. Microbial cultures were isolated using enrichment medium containing acrylonitrile-butadiene styrene (ABS) as the primary carbon source. Priestia aryabhattai MGP1 was found to be the most dominant e-polymer degrading bacterial isolate, as it was reported to degrade ABS plastic in disposed-off television casings. Furthermore, to increase degradation potential of MGP1, Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was adopted which resulted in optimized conditions (pH 7, shaking-speed 120 rpm, and temperature 30 °C), for maximum degradation (18.88%) after 2 months. The structural changes induced by microbial treatment were demonstrated by comparing the findings of Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) images and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra confirming the disappearance of ≡ C─H peaks along with C-H, C=C and C ≡N bond destabilization following degradation. Energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyzers of the native and decomposed e-polymer samples revealed a considerable loss in elemental weight % of oxygen by 8.4% and silica by 0.5%. Magnesium, aluminium and chlorine which were previously present in the untreated sample, were also removed after treatment by the bacterial action. When seeds of Vigna radiata were screened using treated soil in the presence of both e-waste and the chosen potent bacterial strain, it was also discovered that there was reduced toxicity in terms of improved germination and growth metrics as a phytotoxicity criterion.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The acrylonitrile-co-methallyl sulfonate surface-treated (AN69ST) membrane has cytokine adsorption capacity and is used for treating sepsis. This study aimed to compare the effects of continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) using the AN69ST membrane with those of CRRT using other membranes for patients with pneumonia-associated sepsis. METHODS: This retrospective, propensity score-matched, cohort study was based on a nationwide Japanese inpatient database. We included data from adults hospitalized with a primary diagnosis of pneumonia, who received CRRT using either the AN69ST membrane or another membrane within 2 days of admission, and who were discharged from the hospitals between September 2014, and March 2017. Propensity score matching was used to compare in-hospital mortality between the two groups. RESULTS: Eligible patients (N = 2393) were categorized into an AN69ST group (N = 631) and a non-AN69ST group (N = 1762). The overall in-hospital mortality rate was 38.9%. Among the 545 propensity-matched patient pairs, the in-hospital mortality rate was significantly lower in the AN69ST group than in the non-AN69ST group (35.8 vs. 41.8%, p = 0.046). CONCLUSIONS: Among patients with pneumonia-associated sepsis treated with CRRT, CRRT with the AN69ST membrane was associated with a significantly lower in-hospital mortality than CRRT with standard membranes.

RESUMO

With styrene and acrylonitrile in ABS plastic toys as examples, this paper introduces to the development of a systematic strategy for studying the chemical migration risk in toys. The approach, included the detection method, establishment of migration model, model verification, and the practical application of the model in risk assessment. First, simple and sensitive methods for detecting analyte residues and migration were developed by headspace GC-MS. Then, the migration models were established based on the migration data from 5 min to 168 h and verified using 11 ABS samples. The results showed that the predicted values of the models and the experimental values had a good fit (RMSE=0.10-8.72 %). Subsequently, the migration of analytes in 94 ABS toys was predicted with these models at specific migration times. The daily average exposure level to styrene and acrylonitrile were estimated for children (3 months to 3 years). At last, the migration models reasonably predicted that the cancer risk of styrene and acrylonitrile in ABS toys were 1.6 × 10-8-1.4 × 10-6 and 3.1 × 10-8-1.6 × 10-6, respectively. This research contributes to promote toy safety and child health by enriching migration models and risk assessments.

RESUMO

A original electrochemical sensing platform, based on screen-printed electrodes modification with plasma polymerized acrylonitrile (pp-AN) nanofilms is proposed. For that purpose, plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) process was conducted in a parallel plate (13.56 MHz) plasma reactor for 2 min with discharge power of 10 W. The surface topography and electrochemical properties of prepared sensors were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersion spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The electrochemical characteristics of pp-AN/SPCE and pp-AN/SPAuE sensors was investigated for model redox pair [Fe(CN)6]4-/3-. Conducted research confirmed the excellent chemical stability, durability, wide potential window, high signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio, and, most importantly, the ability to standardize the sensors. The pp-AN/SPCE sensor was applied to the determination of bupropion, an antidepressant drug whose intake has increased dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic. The voltammetric response of pp-AN/SPCE for BUP was linear in two concentration ranges of 0.63-10.0 and 10.0-50.0 µmol L-1, with a detection limit of 0.21 µmol L-1. Satisfactory recoveries (96.2-102%) and good precision (RSD below 4.1%) obtained for environmental and biological samples confirmed the usefulness of the sensor for the analysis of various kinds of samples.

RESUMO

Crack propagation is a critical phenomenon in materials science and engineering, significantly impacting structural integrity, reliability, and safety across various applications. The accurate prediction of crack propagation behavior is paramount for ensuring the performance and durability of engineering components, as extensively explored in prior research. Nevertheless, there is a pressing demand for automated models capable of efficiently and precisely forecasting crack propagation. In this study, we address this need by developing a machine learning-based automated model using the powerful H2O library. This model aims to accurately predict crack propagation behavior in various materials by analyzing intricate crack patterns and delivering reliable predictions. To achieve this, we employed a comprehensive dataset derived from measured instances of crack propagation in Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) specimens. Rigorous evaluation metrics, including Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and R-squared (R2) values, were applied to assess the model's predictive accuracy. Cross-validation techniques were utilized to ensure its robustness and generalizability across diverse datasets. Our results underscore the automated model's remarkable accuracy and reliability in predicting crack propagation. This study not only highlights the immense potential of the H2O library as a valuable tool for structural health monitoring but also advocates for the broader adoption of Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) solutions in engineering applications. In addition to presenting these findings, we define H2O as a powerful machine learning library and AutoML as Automated Machine Learning to ensure clarity and understanding for readers unfamiliar with these terms. This research not only demonstrates the significance of AutoML in future-proofing our approach to structural integrity and safety but also emphasizes the need for comprehensive reporting and understanding in scientific discourse.

RESUMO

E-waste comprising plastics causes serious ecological problems due to low degradability, but it is capable of producing a high amount of energy by thermochemical conversion. Therefore, the current study focuses on generating clean syngas through plasma gasification of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) based computer keyboard plastic waste (CKPW) using CO2 as a gasifying agent. The effect of feed rate, gas flow rate and plasma power on the syngas composition was studied. In addition, a comprehensive investigation of energy, exergy, economic and environmental analyses along with characterization of the obtained products was conducted to evaluate the performance of the system. Based on the experimental results, the optimum process parameters for producing syngas possessing a higher calorific value (15.80 MJ/m3) with a higher percentage of H2 (30.16 vol%) and CO (46.09 vol%) were estimated. The optimum feed flow rates of solid fuel and CO2 gas and torch power were estimated as 40 g/10 min, 0.5 lpm and 1.12 kW, respectively. At these conditions, the system could achieve a maximum energy and exergy efficiency of 46.06% and 44.34%, respectively, while the levelized cost of syngas (LCOSover) was estimated as 25.45 INR/kWh, including the social cost. Likewise, the lower values of the estimated global warming potential (370.19 gCO2eq/h) illustrate the better sustainability of the process. The obtained oil with the estimated LHV of 39.13 MJ/kg could be an alternative fuel for diesel and the residue containing a higher proportion of TiO2 has medical applications upon further enrichment. The reaction mechanism of ABS conversion to syngas under plasma gasification conditions is proposed.

RESUMO

Electron Beam (EB) irradiation was utilized to decontaminate model systems of industrial polymers that contain a brominated flame retardant (BFR). Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) and Polycarbonate (PC) are two types of polymers commonly found in Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). In this study, these polymers were exposed to EB irradiation to degrade DecaBromoDiphenylEther (DBDE), one of the most toxic BFRs. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis demonstrated an 87% degradation rate of DBDE for the ABS-DBDE system and 91% for the PC-DBDE system following an 1800 kGy irradiation dose. Thermal analysis using Differential Scanning Calorimetry revealed the presence of crosslinking in ABS and a minor reduction in the glass transition temperature of PC after EB processing. Polymers exhibited thermal stability after photolysis, as indicated by thermogravimetric analysis. In summary, EB irradiation had no impact on the overall thermal properties of both polymers. High-resolution mass spectrometry analysis has confirmed the debromination of both ABS-DBDE and PC-DBDE systems. Therefore, the results obtained are promising and could offer an alternative approach for removing bromine and other additives from plastic E-waste.

RESUMO

Recycling of plastic waste from electrical and electronic equipment (EEE), containing brominated flame retardants (BFR) remains difficult due to the increasingly stringent regulations on their handling and recovery. This report deals with photodegradation in a low-pressure reactor applying UV-visible light on Decabromodiphenyl ether (DBDE or BDE-209) randomly dispersed in commercially available Poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (ABS) and Poly(carbonate) (PC). The aim of this study is to investigate the possibility of decomposing a BFR in plastic waste from EEE while maintaining the specifications of the polymeric materials in order to allow for their recycling. The photodegradation of the extracted BFR was monitored using infrared spectroscopy and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectroscopy. DBDE underwent rapid photodegradation during the first minutes of exposure to UV-visible light and reached degradation yields superior to 90% after 15 min of irradiation. The evaluation of polymer properties (ABS and PC) after irradiation revealed superficial crosslinking effects, which were slightly accelerated in the presence of DBDE. However, the use of a low-pressure reactor avoids large photooxidation and allowed to maintain the thermal and structural properties of the virgin polymers.

RESUMO

The spontaneously formed uncoordinated Pb2+ defects usually make the perovskite films demonstrate strong n-type with relatively lower carrier diffusion length and serious non-radiative recombination energy loss. In this work, we adopt different polymerization strategies to construct three-dimensional passivation frameworks in the perovskite layer. Thanks to the strong C≡N⋅⋅⋅Pb coordination bonding and the penetrating passivation structure, the defect state density is obviously reduced, accompanied by a significant increase in the carrier diffusion length. Additionally, the reduction of iodine vacancies also changed the Fermi level of the perovskite layer from strong n-type to weak n-type, which substantially promotes the energy level alignment and carrier injection efficiency. As a result, the optimized device achieved an efficiency exceeded 24 % (the certified efficiency is 24.16 %) with a high open-circuit voltage of 1.194 V, and the corresponding module achieved an efficiency of 21.55 %.

RESUMO

Leishmaniasis produces approximately-one million of new cases annually, making it one of the most important tropical diseases. As current treatments are not fully effective and are toxic, it is necessary to develop new therapies that are more effective and less toxic, and cause a controlled cell death, with which we can avoid the immunological problems caused by necrosis. In this work 32 acrylonitriles were studied in vitro against Leishmania amazonensis. Three compounds Q20 (12.41), Q29 (11.2) and Q31 (11.56) had better selectivity than the reference compound, miltefosine (11.14) against promastigotes of these parasites, for this reason they were selected to determine their mechanism of action to know the cell death type of they produce. The results of the mechanisms of action show that these three acrylonitriles tested produce chromatin condensation, decreased mitochondrial membrane potential, altered plasma permeability and production of reactive oxygen species. All these characteristic events seem to indicate programmed cell death. Therefore, this study demonstrates the activity of acrylonitriles derivatives as possible leishmanicidal agents.

RESUMO

Introduction: Colchicine-binding site inhibitors are some of the most interesting ligands belonging to the wider family of microtubule-destabilising agents. Results: A novel series of 4'-fluoro-substituted ligands (5-13) was synthesised. The antiproliferative activity assays resulted in nM values for the new benzotriazole-acrylonitrile derivatives. Compound 5, the hit compound, showed an evident blockade of HeLa cell cycle in the G2-M phase, but also a pro-apoptotic potential, and an increase of early and late apoptotic cells in HeLa and MCF-7 cell cycle analysis. Confocal microscopy analysis showed a segmented shape and a collapse of the cytoskeleton, as well as a consistent cell shrinkage after administration of 5 at 100 nM. Derivative 5 was also proved to compete with colchicine at colchicine-binding site, lowering its activity against tubulin polymerisation. In addition, co-administration of 5 and doxorubicin in drug-resistant A375 melanoma cell line highlighted a synergic potential in terms of inhibition of cell viability.Discussion: The 4'-fluoro substitution of benzotriazole-acrylonitrile scaffold brought us a step forward in the optimisation process to obtain compound 5 as promising MDA antiproliferative agent at nanomolar concentration.

RESUMO

This study investigated the inhalation toxicity of the emissions from 3-D printing with acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) filament using an air-liquid interface (ALI) in vitro model. Primary normal human-derived bronchial epithelial cells (NHBEs) were exposed to ABS filament emissions in an ALI for 4 hours. The mean and mode diameters of ABS emitted particles in the medium were 175 ± 24 and 153 ± 15 nm, respectively. The average particle deposition per surface area of the epithelium was 2.29 × 107 ± 1.47 × 107 particle/cm2, equivalent to an estimated average particle mass of 0.144 ± 0.042 µg/cm2. Results showed exposure of NHBEs to ABS emissions did not significantly affect epithelium integrity, ciliation, mucus production, nor induce cytotoxicity. At 24 hours after the exposure, significant increases in the pro-inflammatory markers IL-12p70, IL-13, IL-15, IFN-γ, TNF-α, IL-17A, VEGF, MCP-1, and MIP-1α were noted in the basolateral cell culture medium of ABS-exposed cells compared to non-exposed chamber control cells. Results obtained from this study correspond with those from our previous in vivo studies, indicating that the increase in inflammatory mediators occur without associated membrane damage. The combination of the exposure chamber and the ALI-based model is promising for assessing 3-D printer emission-induced toxicity.
