The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the polymorphic FecGE allele on reproductive traits in Santa Inês and Morada Nova ewes. The traits evaluated were as follows: total progeny weights at birth (PWB) and weaning (PWW) and progeny survival rates at birth (PSRB) and weaning (PSRW). A total of 389 animals, belonging to two Santa Inês herds and one Morada Nova herd, were genotyped. There was a difference between the averages for all the traits studied regarding type of parturition, herd/breed, genotype/herd, and genotype/type of parturition. For each additional progeny, if the female was FecGE/E, the PWB decreased by 1.02 kg and the PWW by 3.16 kg, also with a 0.04% reduction in PSRB and no change in PSRW. If the female was FecGE/+, the reduction in PWB was 0.24 kg, with an increase in PSRW by 0.11%, but no change in PWW and PSRB. In general, these results demonstrate that FecG+/+ females have a better ability to increase their number of progenies without reducing PWB and PWW (also similar to FecGE/+). Thus, it is suggested that further studies on the association between the traits of interest and candidate genes in sheep should be carried out so that the regions which have the greatest effect on the expression of these traits are actually identified. It was not possible to verify the effect of the FecGE allele on the PWB, PWW, PSRB, and PSRW in these Morada Nova and Santa Inês herds.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effectiveness of a structured nursing intervention program on maternal stress and NICU-related maternal ability after the admission of premature infants to a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). BACKGROUND: Mothers of premature infants may face stress having premature infants, and their infants may be admitted to the NICU for a few weeks or months. The mothers' experience of stress would be worse if they have low knowledge and poor NICU-related maternal ability. Mothers of infants admitted to the NICU require well-planned interventions to cope with psychological matters arising after an infant hospitalisation. DESIGN: Quasi-experimental design. METHODS: A total of 216 mothers were consecutively assigned to control and intervention groups. Each group consisted of 108 mothers. The mothers in both groups received questionnaire concerning maternal stress and NICU-related ability during their first visit to NICU (within 48 hr of admission). A structured nursing intervention was implemented for 10 days on mothers in the intervention group. The control group continued to receive existing practice nursing care. Mothers of both groups were again given the questionnaire on maternal stress and NICU-related ability after 14 days of admission. RESULTS: In the intervention group, the difference between the mean total score of maternal stress and parental role and relationship subscale decreased significantly, compared to the control group (p = 0.04; p = 0.01) respectively. Maternal ability improved significantly in mothers in the intervention group 2 weeks postintervention, p < 0.001. CONCLUSION: A structured nursing intervention for mothers could significantly reduce maternal stress and promote maternal NICU-related abilities. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: The results of the study could help neonatal nurses to develop an appropriate nursing intervention for parents with premature infants in the NICU.

Pooling semen of multiple boars is commonly used in swine production systems. Compared with single boar systems, this technique changes family structure creating maternal half-sib families. The aim of this simulation study was to investigate how pooling semen affects the accuracy of estimating direct and maternal effects for individual piglet birth weight, in purebred pigs. Different scenarios of pooling semen were simulated by allowing the same female to mate from 1 to 6 boars, per insemination, whereas litter size was kept constant (N = 12). In each pooled boar scenario, genomic information was used to construct either the genomic relationship matrix (G) or to reconstruct pedigree in addition to G. Genotypes were generated for 60,000 SNPs evenly distributed across 18 autosomes. From the 5 simulated generations, only animals from generations 3 to 5 were genotyped (N = 36,000). Direct and maternal true breeding values (TBV) were computed as the sum of the effects of the 1,080 QTLs. Phenotypes were constructed as the sum of direct TBV, maternal TBV, an overall mean of 1.25 kg, and a residual effect. The simulated heritabilities for direct and maternal effects were 0.056 and 0.19, respectively, and the genetic correlation between both effects was -0.25. All simulations were replicated 5 times. Variance components and direct and maternal heritability were estimated using average information REML. Predictions were computed via pedigree-based BLUP and single-step genomic BLUP (ssGBLUP). Genotyped littermates in the last generation were used for validation. Prediction accuracies were calculated as correlations between EBV and TBV for direct (accdirect) and maternal (accmat) effects. When boars were known, accdirect were 0.21 (1 boar) and 0.26 (6 boars) for BLUP, whereas for ssGBLUP, they were 0.38 (1 boar) and 0.43 (6 boars). When boars were unknown, accdirect was lower in BLUP but similar in ssGBLUP. For the scenario with known boars, accmat was 0.58 and 0.63 for 1 and 6 boars, respectively, under ssGBLUP. For unknown boars, accmat was 0.63 for 2 boars and 0.62 for 6 boars in ssGBLUP. In general, accdirect and accmat were lower in the single-boar scenario compared with pooled semen scenarios, indicating that a half-sib structure is more adequate to estimate direct and maternal effects. Using pooled semen from multiple boars can help us to improve accuracy of predicting maternal and direct effects when maternal half-sib families are larger than 2.

The objective of this study was to determine breed additive and heterosis effects on growth curves, total milk yield (TMY), calf weaning weight (WW), predicted energy intake (EI), and cow efficiency (CE) of purebred and crossbred beef cows raised in Southern Brazil. The data were from 175 purebred and crossbred cows representing eight genetic groups: Angus (A), Hereford (H), Nelore (N), A × H (AH), H × A (HA), A × N (AN), N × A (NA), and Caracu (C) × A (CA). Growth of the cows was modeled using the nonlinear Brody function and machine milking was used to assess TMY. WW was linearly adjusted to 210 d. EI was predicted with an equation in which the independent variables were estimates of parameters of the Brody function and TMY. The ratio of WW to EI estimated CE. Taurine-indicine heterosis effects were significant for all traits, and greater than those for taurine breed crosses. In general, crossbred cows were heavier at maturity, matured earlier, produced more milk, weaned heavier calves, and were predicted to consume more energy. Thus, they were more efficient than purebred cows, despite their greater predicted feed intake. Among the purebreds, A cows matured most rapidly, weighed the least at maturity, produced the most milk, weaned the heaviest calves, were predicted to consume the least energy; and were therefore most efficient among the breeds that were evaluated. These results are useful as inputs to bioeconomic models that can be used to predict productive and economic outcomes from crossbreeding and to facilitate recommendations for beef producers of southern Brazil and other similar subtropical climatic regions.

The present study examined the possibilities and consequences of selecting pigs for reduced aggression and desirable maternal behaviour. Data were recorded from 798 purebred Large White gilts, with an age of 217±17.7 (mean±SD) days, which were observed at mixing with unfamiliar conspecifics. The reaction of the sows towards separation from their litter was assessed for 2022 litters from 848 Large White sows. Sows' performance during their time in the farrowing unit was scored based on the traits farrowing behaviour (i.e. need of birth assistance), rearing performance (i.e. litter quality at day 10 postpartum (pp)), usability (i.e. additional labour input during lactation period e.g. for treatments) and udder quality of the sow (i.e. udder attachment). For agonistic behaviour, traits heritabilities of h 2=0.11±0.04 to h 2=0.28±0.06 were estimated. For the sow's reaction towards separation from her litter low heritabilities were found (h 2=0.03±0.03 for separation test on day 1 pp and h 2=0.02±0.03 for separation test on day 10 pp). Heritabilities for lactating sow's performance (farrowing behaviour, rearing performance, usability of the sow and udder quality) in the farrowing unit ranged from h 2=0.03±0.02 to h 2=0.19±0.03. Due to these results it can be assumed that selection for these traits, for example, for udder quality or reduced aggression, is possible. Antagonistic associations were found between separation test on day 1 pp and different measures of aggressiveness (r g =-0.22±0.26 aggressive attack and r g =-0.41±0.33 reciprocal fighting). Future studies should determine economic as well as welfare-related values of these traits in order to decide whether selection for these traits will be reasonable.
