RESUMO

The study of fluid absorption, particularly that of water, into nanoporous materials has garnered increasing attention in the last decades across a broad range of disciplines. However, most investigation approaches to probe such behaviors are limited by characterization conditions and may lead to misinterpretations. In this study, a combined MRI and MAS NMR method was used to study a nanoporous silica glass to acquire information about its structural framework and interactions with confined water in a native humid environment. Specifically, MRI was used for a quantitative analysis of water extent. While MAS NMR techniques provided structural information of silicate materials, including interactive surface area and framework packing. Analysis of water spin-spin relaxation times (T2) suggested differences in water confinement within the characterized framework. Subsequent unsuccessful delivery of paramagnetic molecule into the pores enabled a quantitative assessment of the dimensions that "bottleneck" the pores. Finally, pore sizes were derived from the paramagnetic molecular size, density function theory (DFT) simulation and characterizations on standard samples. Our result matches with Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis that the pore size is less than 1.3 nm. The use of a paramagnetic probe for pore size determination introduces a new approach of characterization in the liquid phase, offering an alternative to the conventional BET analysis that uses gas molecule as probes.

RESUMO

Through this research, functionalized graphene nanopores are used to verify how effective such an apparatus for DNA sequencing is. The circular symmetric pores are functionalized with hydrogen and a hydroxyl group bonded with carbon atoms of the pore rim. Plus, two adenine bases are also put at the rim perimeter to verify whether such a combination would lead to base detection. A homopolymer of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) is pulled through a nanopore using steered molecular dynamics (SMD) simulation. Pulling force profile, moving fashion of ssDNA in irreversible DNA pulling as well as the base orientation during translocation relative to the graphene plane, called beta angle, are assessed. Based on the studied parameters, SMD force, and base orientation, the hydrogenated and hydroxylated pores do not show a clear distinction between bases, while the adenine-functionalized pore can distinguish between adenine and cytosine. Therefore, there may be some hope for achieving single-base sequencing, while further research is needed.

RESUMO

Pre-polymerized vinyl trimethoxy silane (PVTMS)@MWCNT nano-aerogel system was constructed via radical polymerization, sol-gel transition and supercritical CO2 drying. The fabricated organic-inorganic hybrid PVTMS@MWCNT aerogel structure shows nano-pore size (30-40 nm), high specific surface area (559 m2 g-1), high void fraction (91.7%) and enhanced mechanical property: (1) the nano-pore size is beneficial for efficiently blocking thermal conduction and thermal convection via Knudsen effect (beneficial for infrared (IR) stealth); (2) the heterogeneous interface was beneficial for IR reflection (beneficial for IR stealth) and MWCNT polarization loss (beneficial for electromagnetic wave (EMW) attenuation); (3) the high void fraction was beneficial for enhancing thermal insulation (beneficial for IR stealth) and EMW impedance match (beneficial for EMW attenuation). Guided by the above theoretical design strategy, PVTMS@MWCNT nano-aerogel shows superior EMW absorption property (cover all Ku-band) and thermal IR stealth property (ΔT reached 60.7 °C). Followed by a facial combination of the above nano-aerogel with graphene film of high electrical conductivity, an extremely high electromagnetic interference shielding material (66.5 dB, 2.06 mm thickness) with superior absorption performance of an average absorption-to-reflection (A/R) coefficient ratio of 25.4 and a low reflection bandwidth of 4.1 GHz (A/R ratio more than 10) was experimentally obtained in this work.

RESUMO

Natural estrogens in greenhouse soils with long-term manure application are becoming a potential threat to adjacent aquatic environment. Porous stalk biochar as a cost-effective adsorbent of estrogen has a strong potential to reduce their transportation from soil to waters. But the dominant adsorption mechanism of estrogen to stalk biochars and retention of estrogen by greenhouse soils amended with biochar are less well known. Element, function groups, total surface area (SAtotal), nano-pores of stalk biochars, and chemical structure of 17ß-estradiol (E2, length 1.20 nm, width 0.56 nm, thickness 0.48 nm) are integrated in research on E2 sorption behavior in three stalk-derived biochars produced from wheat straw (WS), rice straw (RS), and corn straw (CS), and greenhouse soils amended with optimal biochar. The three biochars had comparable H/C and (O + N)/C, while their aromatic carbon contents and total surface areas (SAtotal) both varied as CS > WS > RS. However, WS had the highest sorption capacity (logK oc), sorption affinity (K f ), and strongest nonlinearity (n). Additionally, the variation of Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity (Q 0) was consistent with the trend for SA1.2-20 (WS > RS > CS) but contrary to the trend for SAtotal and SA<1.2 (CS > WS > RS). These results indicate that pore-filling dominates the sorption of E2 by biochars and exhibits "sieving effect" and length-directionality-specific via H-bonding between -OH groups on the both ends of E2 in the length direction and polar groups on the inner surface of pores. After the addition of wheat straw biochar, the extent of increase in the sorption affinity for E2 in the soil with low OC content was higher than those in the soil with high OC content. Therefore, the effectiveness for the wheat straw biochar mitigating the risk of E2 in greenhouse soil depended on the compositions of soil, especially organic matter.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Enzyme engineering by immobilization techniques has proven to be well compatible with the other chemical or biological approaches aiming to improve enzyme's functions and stability. Zeolites are porous alumino-silicates with a wide range of porosity and particle size along with the other remarkable properties such as high surface area, high stability against a wide range temperatures, pHs, as well as organic solvents. OBJECTIVES: Nano-zeolites are a class of advanced materials that have special properties that has made them ideal candidate for a wide range of applications. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, a nano-zeolite which has been synthesized and characterized in our previous work, was used to immobilize α-amylase and activated with glutaraldehyde as a bi-functional agent to improve enzyme properties. RESULTS: Studies have shown an increased stability of the immobilized enzyme compared to the free enzyme against a range of temperature change and pHs as well. Also the stability of the immobilized enzyme was increased with respect to storage. The calculated binding efficiency shows that the immobilized α-amylase conserved 58.44 % of its native activity. CONCLUSIONS: Using nano pore zeolite for covalent attachment of the α-amylase resulted in an increased resistance of this enzyme against denaturation. The immobilized enzyme demonstrated higher stability compared to the free enzyme at higher temperatures and pH variations. Immobilization also caused an increase in the enzyme stability during storage.
