RESUMO

Polyurethane materials have good biocompatibility, blood compatibility, mechanical properties, fatigue resistance and processability, and have always been highly valued as medical materials. Polyurethane fibers prepared by electrostatic spinning technology can better mimic the structure of natural extracellular matrices (ECMs), and seed cells can adhere and proliferate better to meet the requirements of tissue repair and reconstruction. The purpose of this review is to present the research progress of electrostatically spun polyurethane fibers in bone tissue engineering, skin tissue engineering, neural tissue engineering, vascular tissue engineering and cardiac tissue engineering, so that researchers can understand the practical applications of electrostatically spun polyurethane fibers in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

RESUMO

Development of suitable antimicrobial biomaterials for hygienic wound dressing and healing is an important requirement for medical application. Durable mechanical properties increase the application range of biomaterial in different environmental and biological conditions. Due to the inherent brittleness of silk fibroin (SF), polyurethane fiber (PUF) was used to modify SF containing actinomycin X2 (Ac.X2) to prepare silk fibroin@actinomycin X2 /polyurethane fiber (ASF/PUF) blend membranes. The ASF/PUF blend membrane was developed by solution casting method. Incorporation of PUF improved the flexibility of material and introduction of Ac.X2 has increased antibacterial activity of materials. Excellent mechanical properties (tensile strength up to 25.7 MPa and elongation at break up to 946.5 %) of 50 % SF+50 % PUF blend membrane were proved by tensile testing machine. FT-IR spectra, TGA, contact angle and DMA were tested to prove the blend membrane's physico-chemical characteristics. ASF/PUF blend membrane displayed satisfactory antibacterial activity against S. aureus, and the cytotoxicity tests showed that the blend membrane has better biosafety compared to directly applied Ac.X2 in soluble form. These results suggest that the modification of SF through PUF for development of flexible antibacterial membranes has great potential application value in the field of silk-like material fabrication.

RESUMO

Among the starting materials of thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs), it was confirmed that succinic acid-based polyester biopolyols having different molecular weights (Mn = 1000, 2000, and 4000) affect the physicochemical properties of the final polymer significantly. Bio-TPUs synthesized through a solvent-free one-shot polymerization process were synthesized with a polyester polyol, 1,4 butanediol (BDO), and 4,4'-methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) in a molar ratio of 1:1:2. As a control group, one typical petroleum-based TPU was synthesized and characterized along with other bio-based TPUs. Representative petroleum-based and bio-based TPUs synthesized were manufactured as monofilaments with a diameter of about 0.2 mm through an extrusion process with different draw ratios (4, 5, and 6 times). The molecular weight and structural properties of the TPUs were characterized by GPC and FT-IR analysis and thermal characterization by DSC and TGA analysis. Petroleum-based TPU and bio-based TPU having the same molecular weight soft segment (SS) tended to have similar molecular weight and hard segment (HS) content. TPUs with high HS content had excellent thermal stability, enabling stable extrusion of TPUs. In addition, it was confirmed that the bio-based TPU fibers produced in this way had a tensile strength corresponding to the physical properties of petroleum-based TPU fibers and an excellent elastic recovery rate of almost 100 %. These results indicate the application potential of bio-TPU.

RESUMO

(1) Background: Bacterial infections have long threatened global public safety; hence, it is significant to continuously develop antibacterial fibers that are closely related to people's daily lives. Berberine hydrochloride is a natural antibacterial agent that has application prospects in the preparation of antibacterial fibers. (2) Methods: This study firstly verified the antibacterial properties of berberine hydrochloride and its possible antibacterial mechanism. Thereafter, berberine hydrochloride was introduced into the self-made melt-spun polyurethane fiber through optimized coating technology. The performance of coating modified polyurethane fiber has been systematically evaluated, including its antibacterial properties, mechanical properties, and surface wettability. (3) Results: Results show that the antibacterial polyurethane fiber with desirable comprehensive properties is expected to be used in the biomedical fields. (4) Conclusions: The research also provides a reference for the development and application of other natural antibacterial ingredients in fiber fields.

RESUMO

The use of energy therapy including tourmaline/negative ions has gained huge popularity due to their long-standing historical evidence in improving human health and the technology development. However, the limitations of tourmaline based polyurethane fibers including the unsatisfied mechanical properties and negative ions releasing performances hind their further applications for wearable energy therapy. In this study, graphene oxide was modified within the polyurethane/tourmaline nanocomposite and then the wet-spinning method was used to prepare the fibers. As expected, the results proved that polyurethane/tourmaline/graphene oxide fiber had enhanced Young's modulus (8.4 MPa) and tensile stain at break (335%). In addition, the number of released negative ions from polyurethane/tourmaline/graphene oxide fiber was significantly improved 17 times and 1.6 times more than that of neat polyurethane fiber and polyurethane/tourmaline fiber, respectively. Moreover, the releasing number of negative ions was significantly decreased after being applying voltage. We envision that the proposed polyurethane/tourmaline/graphene oxide fiber will provide valuable insights into the development of the wearable energy products.

RESUMO

Flexible strain sensors have attracted a great amount of attention for promising applications in next-generation artificially intelligent devices. However, it is difficult for conventional planar strain sensors to meet the requirements of miniature size and light weight for flexible electronics. Herein, a highly sensitive and stretchable fiber strain sensor with a millimeter diameter was innovatively fabricated by the capillary tube method to integrate silver nanowires (AgNWs) in polyurethane (PU) fibers. Scanning electron microscopy results demonstrate that AgNWs were embedded into the surface layer of PU fibers and formed completely conductive networks. The unique AgNW networks endow the PU/AgNW fibers with superior electrical conductivity of 3.1 S/cm, high elongation at break of 265%, wide response range of 43%, high gauge factor of 87.6 up to 22% strain, fast response time of 49 ms, and excellent reliability and stability. Such satisfactory stretchability and sensitivity is attributed to the combination of the highly stretchable PU matrix and the embedded architecture of the AgNW conductive network. Moreover, PU/AgNW fibers can be employed as wearable devices to detect various human motions and to drive light-emitting diodes at a lower voltage (2.7 V).

RESUMO

The manufacture of stretchable conductors with well-reserved electrical performance under large-degree deformations via scalable processes remains of great importance. In this work, a highly stretchable 3D conductive framework consisting of a polyurethane fiber mat (PUF) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) is reported through facile approaches, electrospinning, and in situ interfacial polymerization, which was then backfilled with poly(dimethylsiloxane) to obtain 3D conductors. The excellent stretchability of the 3D conductive network imparted the as-prepared electrode a superior mechanical durability. Moreover, the applied strains can be effectively accommodated by the arrangement and orientation of the fibers resulting in a relatively stable electrical performance with only a 20% increased resistance at 100% stretching. Meanwhile, the resistance of the conductor could remain constant during 2000 bending cycles and showed a slight increase during 100 cycles of 50% stretching. The potential in the applications of large-area stretchable electrodes was demonstrated by the construction of LED arrays with the PUF-based conductors as electrical connections.
