RESUMO

This study explores the mechanisms enhancing phosphorus (P) release from sludge in anaerobic digestion (AD) with thermal hydrolysis pretreatment (THP) using sequential chemical extraction, X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy (XANES), 31P NMR, and multiomics. THP-treated sludge notably increased liquid-phase P by 53.8% over 3 days compared to sewage sludge (SS), identifying solid-phase Fe-P as the primary P source. The THP+AD also provided a higher abundance of bacteria that contributed to P release through multiple pathways (MPRPB), whereas SS+AD enriched some microbial species with single P release pathway. Moreover, species co-occurrence network analysis underlined the pivotal role of P-releasing bacteria in THP+AD, with 8 out of 16 keystones being P-releasers. Among the 63 screened genes that were related to P transformations and release, the poly beta-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) synthesis genes associated with polyphosphate bacteria-mediated P release were more abundant in THP+AD than in SS+AD. Furthermore, the upregulation of genes involved in methyl phosphonate metabolism in the THP-treated sludge enhanced the methane production potential of the AD process. These findings suggested that MPRPB were indeed the main contributors to P release, and enrichment in the THP+AD process enhanced their capability for P liberation.

RESUMO

Sludge stabilization was affected by solid content during autothermal thermophilic aerobic digestion (ATAD). Thermal hydrolysis pretreatment (THP) could alleviate the issues of high viscosity, slow solubilization and low ATAD efficiency caused by increased solid content. The influence of THP on the stabilization of sludge with different solid contents (5.24%-17.14%) during ATAD was investigated in this study. The results demonstrated that stabilization was achieved with volatile solid (VS) removal of 39.0%-40.4% after 7-9 days of ATAD for sludge with solid content of 5.24%-17.14%. The solubilization of sludge with different solid contents reached 40.1%-45.0% after THP. The rheological analysis indicated that the apparent viscosity of sludge was obviously reduced after THP at different solid contents. The increase in fluorescence intensity of fulvic acid-like organics, soluble microbial by-products and humic acid-like organics in the supernatant after THP and the decrease in fluorescence intensity of soluble microbial by-products after ATAD were detected by excitation emission matrix (EEM). The molecular weight (MW) distribution in the supernatant elucidated that the proportion of 50 kDa < MW < 100 kDa increased to 16%-34% after THP and the proportion of 10 kDa < MW < 50 kDa decreased to 8%-24% after ATAD. High throughput sequencing showed that the dominant bacterial genera shifted from Acinetobacter, Defluviicoccus and Norank_f__norank_o__PeM15 to Sphaerobacter and Bacillus during ATAD. This work revealed that solid content of 13%-17% was appropriate for efficient ATAD and rapid stabilization under THP.

RESUMO

Thermal hydrolyzed sludge filtrate (THSF) rich in biodegradable organics could be a promising external carbon source for biological nutrient removal (BNR). The use of THSF can effectively reduce wastewater treatment plants operating costs and recover bioresources and bioenergy from the waste activated sludge. In this study, the effect of THSF on the BNR process was investigated using a lab-scale anaerobic/anoxic/oxic (A2/O) system. Total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) removal efficiencies of 74.26 ± 3.36% and 92.20 ± 3.13% at a 0.3% dosing ratio were achieved, respectively. Moreover, 20.42% of the chemical oxygen demand (COD) contained in THSF contributed to denitrification, enhancing nitrogen removal efficiency from 55.30 to 74.26%. However, the effluent COD increased by approximately 36.80%, due to 18.39% of the COD contained in THSF discharged with effluent. In addition, the maximum denitrification rate was approximately 16.01 mg N g VSS-1 h-1, while the nitrification rate was not significantly affected by THSF. Nitrosomonas, a common chemoautotrophic nitrifier, was not detected after the introduction of THSF. The aerobic denitrifier Rubellimicrobium was stimulated, and its relative abundance increased from 0.16 to 3.03%. Moreover, the relative abundance of Dechloromonas was 3.93%, indicating that the denitrifying phosphorus removal process was enhanced. This study proposes an engineering application route of THSF, and the chemical phosphate removal pretreatment might be a means to suppress the phosphate recirculation.

RESUMO

Anaerobic digestion (AD) of swine manure (SM) commonly shows low biogas output and unsatisfactory economic performance. In this study, thermophilic AD (TAD, 50 ± 1 °C) was combined with thermal hydrolysis pretreatment (THP, 170 °C/10 bar), to investigate its potential for maximizing biogas yield, securing successful digestion and microbial diversity, as well as improving energy balance. Four lab-scale continuously stirred tank reactors were operated for 300 days and compared with each other, i.e., reactor 1 (raw SM fed in mesophilic AD: RSM-MAD), reactor 2 (THP-treated SM fed in MAD: TSM-MAD), reactor 3 (RSM-TAD), and reactor 4 (TSM-TAD). The results showed that THP was efficient to increase methane production of SM, TSM-TAD mode led to the highest methane yield (129.8 ± 40.5 mL-CH4/g-VS/day) among the tests (p < 0.05). Although TAD was more likely to induce free ammonia (> 700 mg/L) or volatile fatty acids (> 6000 mg/L) accumulation compared with MAD in start-up phase, TSM-TAD treatment mode behaved a sustainable digestion process in a long-term operation. For TSM-TAD scenario, higher Shannon-Weaver (3.873) and lower Simpson index (0.061) indicated this mode ensured and enlarged the diversity of bacteria communities. Phylum Bathyarchaeota was dominant (59.3%-90.0%) in archaea community, followed by Euryarchaeota in the four reactors. RSM-MAD treatment mode achieved the highest energy output (4.65 GJ/day), TSM-TAD was less effective (-17.38 GJ/day) due to increased energy demands. Thus improving the energetic efficiency of THP units is recommended for the development of TSM-TAD treatment mode.

RESUMO

Micromolecular plant-growth biostimulants (micro-PBs) production from sewage sludge is attracting increasing interest, as it is expected to enhance the fertilizing effect of sludge for land application. This study attempted to promote effective micro-PBs production from sewage sludge through thermal hydrolysis pretreatment-anaerobic digestion (THP-AD) and explore the underpinning regulation mechanisms. Results showed that the highest effective micro-PB production in digested sludge was achieved in THP(160 °C)-AD by day 12, with 80.73 mg/kg volatile solid (VS) of phytohormones and 417.75 mg/kg VS of allelochemicals, and these effective micro-PBs all originated from aromatic amino acids (AAAs). The metabolomic and metagenomic results revealed that, as compared with THP(120 °C)-AD and AD without THP, THP(160°C)-AD uniquely upregulated AAAs biosynthesis and consequently improved AAAs metabolism toward effective micro-PBs production. Further exploration of related microbial pathways and metabolites suggested that the upregulated AAAs biosynthesis in THP(160 °C)-AD in the early stage was partially attributed to the enhanced carbohydrate release. More importantly, the results showed that the amount of quinones, which probably facilitate energy generation via acting as electron-transfer mediators, was significantly positively correlated with the abundance of AAAs biosynthesis genes (R2 = 0.93). Hence, the improved initial release and biosynthesis of quinones are critical in enhancing the AAAs biosynthesis in THP(160 °C)-AD. Moreover, the enhanced quinones supply and the consequent active AAAs transformation in THP(160 °C)-AD reinforced the humification process, highly supporting effective micro-PBs stabilization. The important roles of quinones in effective micro-PBs production and stabilization in sludge anaerobic digestion should be considered in technology development for micro-PBs recovery.

RESUMO

Autothermal thermophilic aerobic digestion (ATAD) is a rapid biological treatment technology for sludge stabilization. To improve digestion efficiency and shorten stabilization time, thermal hydrolysis pretreatment was employed before ATAD of high solid sludge. The results showed that accelerated stabilization of high solid sludge (total solid = 10.1%) was achieved by thermal hydrolysis pretreatment with volatile solid removal efficiency of 40.3% after 8 days of ATAD, 11 days earlier than unpretreated sludge. The enhanced release and hydrolysis of intracellular organics resulted in a solubilization degree of 45.3%. The reduced sludge viscosity and improved fluidity after thermal hydrolysis facilitated mixing, aeration and organics degradation during ATAD. Excitation emission matrix analysis indicated that the fluorescence intensity of soluble microbial byproduct and tyrosine-like protein increased markedly after thermal hydrolysis and decreased after ATAD. The proportion of high molecular weight (MW > 10 kDa) substances in the supernatant increased significantly after thermal hydrolysis, while the low MW (MW < 1 kDa) substances decreased after ATAD. The significant difference in microbial composition between the pretreatment and control groups elucidated the accelerated sludge stabilization under thermal hydrolysis. This work provides an efficient and practical strategy to achieve rapid stabilization of high solid sludge.

RESUMO

This work investigated the effects of THP temperature (140-200 °C) and time (10-60 min) on the surface morphology, pyrolysis properties, and soluble compounds of dewatered sludge. Results indicate that higher temperature and longer pretreatment time considerably improve organics hydrolysis (the SCOD content increased 1.4-2.46 times, increasing 2.46 times at 200 °C). In addition, high temperature also improved the sludge pyrolysis efficiency (the highest at 200 °C), and reduced the harmful gas release, especially HCN. Moreover, the surface morphology of the sludge changed, the gap and floccules on the surface of the sludge increased. The carbohydrate content increased the highest; approximately 91.9% at 170 °C. THP promoted the decomposition of the nitrogen compounds in the sludge and facilitated their transition to a liquid phase. The total nitrogen and ammonia nitrogen content doubled, and the organic nitrogen content decreased by 50% with time increased from 10 to 60 min.

RESUMO

Melanoidins are brown recalcitrant polymers originating from the thermal hydrolysis pretreatment (THP) of organic solid waste (OSW). Owing to their various formation pathways and complex structures, there is currently no reliable method to quantify melanoidins. In this study, a spectrophotometric method was developed to determine melanoidins concentration in different OSW. Three typical model Maillard reaction systems (glucose-glycine, glucose/fructose-20 amino acids, and dextran-bovine serum albumin) were used to acquire the characteristic peaks and establish standard curves. The results showed that a standard curve using glucose/fructose-20 amino acids model melanoidins at 280 nm was the optimal quantification method, because it had the best correlation with the physicochemical indicators of melanoidins and semi-quantification results calculated by excitation-emission matrix fluorescence. In addition, the applicability of the proposed method was evaluated using multiple real melanoidins samples extracted from thermally pretreated OSW under different THP conditions and food-derived melanoidins as well, demonstrating its validity and advantages. This study is the first to provide a simple, effective, and accurate method for quantifying THP-origin melanoidins from different sources. Remarkably, as a specific and important application scenario, the proposed quantification method was employed to investigate the concentration dependence of melanoidins antioxidation in thermally pretreated OSW.

RESUMO

Stricter nutrient discharge limits at wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are increasing the demand for external carbon sources for denitrification, especially at cold temperatures. Production of carbon sources at WWTP by fermentation of sewage sludge often results in low yields of soluble carbon and volatile fatty acids (VFA) and high biogas losses, limiting its feasibility for full-scale application. This study investigated the overall impact of thermal hydrolysis pre-treatment (THP) on the production of VFA for denitrification through the fermentation of municipal sludge and digestate. Fermentation products and yields, denitrification efficiency and potential impacts on methane yield in the downstream process after carbon source separation were evaluated. Fermentation of THP substrates resulted in 37-70 % higher soluble chemical oxygen demand (sCOD) concentrations than fermentation of untreated substrates but did not significantly affect VFA yield after fermentation. Nevertheless, THP had a positive impact on the denitrification rates and on the methane yields of the residual solid fraction in all experiments. Among the different carbon sources tested, the one produced from the fermentation of THP-digestate showed an overall better potential as a carbon source than other substrates (e.g. sludge). It obtained a relatively high carbon solubilisation degree (39 %) and higher concentrations of sCOD (19 g sCOD/L) and VFA (9.8 g VFACOD/L), which resulted in a higher denitrification rate (8.77 mg NOx-N/g VSS∙h). After the separation of the carbon source, the solid phase from this sample produced a methane yield of 101 mL CH4/g VS. Furthermore, fermentation of a 50:50 mixture of THP-substrate and raw sludge produced also resulted in a high VFA yield (283 g VFACOD/kg VSin) and denitrification rate of 8.74 mg NOx-N/g VSS∙h, indicating a potential for reduced treatment volumes. Calculations based on a full-scale WWTP (Käppala, Stockholm) demonstrated that the carbon sources produced could replace fossil-based methanol and meet the nitrogen effluent limit (6 mg/L) despite their ammonium content. Fermentation of 50-63 % of the available sludge at Käppala WWTP in 2028 could produce enough carbon source to replace methanol, with only an 8-20 % reduction in methane production, depending on the production process. Additionally, digestate production would be sufficient to generate 81 % of the required carbon source while also increasing methane production by 5 % if a portion of the solid residues were recirculated to the digester.

RESUMO

To evaluate the effect of thermal hydrolysis pretreatment time on the sludge anaerobic digestion system of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Daxing district, Beijing, the structure and diversity of microbial communities in primary sludge and an activated sludge anaerobic digestion system with different thermal hydrolysis pretreatment times (15 min, 30 min, and 45 min) were analyzed using Illumina MiSeq high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that the dominant groups of digested sludge were mainly distributed in Firmicutes, Cloacimonadota, Chloroflexi, and Synergistota, with W5 being the most common genus. The sum of relative abundance of the dominant phylum was greater than 60%, and W5 accounted for 20.8%-54.5%, showing a high abundance of a few dominant species. During the anaerobic digestion of thermo-hydrolyzed sludge, the relative abundance of acetogenic methanogens decreased due to high levels of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) concentrations, which suggested that the hydrogenophilic methanogenic pathway was more than that of the acetogenic methanogenic pathway. Correlation analysis showed that the soluble protein and pH of thermo-hydrolyzed sludge, NH4+-N of digested sludge, and thermal hydrolysis pretreatment time were the four main environmental factors affecting microbial community structure, and NH4+-N of digested sludge had the largest negative correlation with methanogens. The thermal hydrolysis pretreatment time was negatively correlated with both the Chao index and Shannon index, so longer thermal hydrolysis pretreatment time was not conducive to microbial flora during anaerobic digestion.

RESUMO

Waste activated sludge (WAS) is a significant phosphorus (P) repository, and there is a growing interest in P recovery from WAS. Typically, the commercial technology for treating WAS involves thermal hydrolysis pretreatment (THP) coupled with anaerobic digestion (AD). However, there is ongoing debate regarding the transformation and distribution of P throughout this process. To address this, a long-term THP-AD process was operated in this study to comprehensively investigate P transformation and distribution. The results revealed that a substantial biodegradation of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) raised the pH of the digestate to 8.3 during the AD process. This increased pH facilitated the dissolution of Al, leading to a reduction of 6.92 mg/L of NaOH-P. Simultaneously, sulfate reduction contributed to a decrease of 11.04 mg/L of Bipy-P in the solid. However, the reduction of Bipy-P and NaOH-P in the solid did not result in an improved P release to the supernatant. Conversely, a decrease of 23.60 mg/L P in the aqueous phase was observed after anaerobic digestion. The disappeared P was primarily precipitated with Mg and Ca, driven by the increased pH, and it contributed to the increase of HCl-P in the solid from 107.80 to 144.52 mg/L. These findings were further confirmed by results obtained from scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and solid-state 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. This study provides valuable insights into the mechanisms of P transformation during THP-AD process that is nearly opposite from conventional AD system.

RESUMO

Understanding sludge rheology and optimizing equipment performance is crucial for energy efficiency in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). This study examined sludge rheology after thermal hydrolysis pre-treatment (THP) at 60, 80, and 120 °C for 2 h, followed by anaerobic digestion (AD) at 37 °C for 20 days, and assessed impacts on pump and agitator performance. Post-treatment, sludge showed reduced viscosity and improved flowability, indicated by changes in Herschel-Bulkley parameters, enhancing pump and agitator efficiency, particularly at 120 °C. These rheological improvements were correlated to the solubilization of sludge components after THP and solids reduction after AD, highlighting the interconnectedness of rheology and treatment outcomes. Despite high heat demands, an energy balance showed that THP scenarios, especially at 120 °C, had lower energy requirements for pumps and agitators, leading to energy savings without increased heat consumption. These findings underscore the influence of rheological changes in improving energy efficiency in WWTPs.

RESUMO

Melanoidins, the brown late-stage Maillard reaction products, are responsible for color development and refractoriness in thermal hydrolyzed sludge (THS), causing negative effects on wastewater treatment. This study aimed to develop a methodology for the identification, isolation and preliminary characterization of the THS melanoidins. After thermal hydrolysis, the formation of melanoidins were confirmed by physicochemical indicators and excitation-emission matrix fluorescence analysis. The macroporous resin adsorption method was adopted to successfully extract melanoidins from THS with high recovery and selectivity. The main chemical components of the extracted melanoidins were carbohydrate (23.1 %), protein (43.8 %) and phenol (13.7 %), and the C/N was 4.5. In addition, furans, alcohols and sulfur-containing volatile substances were detected by pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy determined that functional groups such as CO, CN, NH, C-O-C, amide I and phenyl were present in the structure of THS melanoidins, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy indicated the formation of heterocyclic macromolecular structures. Their formation pathways were speculated to involve the cross-linkage of low-molecular-weight components (e.g. proteins, Amadori and Schiff base compounds) and the polymerization of heterocyclic units (e.g. furans, pyroles and pyrazines). The above results clarify the fundamental characteristics of the melanoidins formed during sludge thermal hydrolysis and will help improve subsequent research on melanoidins control.

RESUMO

The study compares the potential to produce volatile fatty acids (VFA) from sewage sludge, both raw and thermally pre-treated in two modes of operation. In batch mode, raw sludge at pH 8 obtained the highest maximum VFA yield (0.41 g COD-VFA/g CODfed) whereas pre-treated sludge achieved a lower value (0.27 g COD-VFA/g CODfed). The operation of 5-L continuous reactors showed that thermal hydrolysis pre-treatment (THP) did not have any significant influence on VFA yields, averaging 15.1 % g COD-VFA/g COD with raw sludge and 16.6 % g COD-VFA/g COD with pre-treated one. Microbial community analysis showed that phylum Firmicutes was predominant in both reactors and that the enzymatic profiles involved in VFA production were very similar regardless of the substrate fed.

RESUMO

This study sought to investigate the relationship between N-acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs) and methanogenic microorganisms, focusing on endogenous AHLs in the anaerobic digestion (AD) process. By analyzing waste activated sludge (WAS) samples, we examine the changes in microbial communities and the AHLs-methanogens connection. The Mantel test and Spearman correlation analysis were conducted to gain novel insights into the AD process. Our findings demonstrate that thermal hydrolysis pretreatment (THP) modifies AHL concentrations during AD, thereby enhancing methanogenic bacteria activity and regulating social interactions among microorganisms. In the Eth group (AD of THP samples labeled Eth), Methanobacterium and Methanosarcina accounted for over 80% of the methanogenic bacteria, with correlation coefficients greater than 0.5 between these bacterial taxa and N-hexyl-l-homoserine lactone (C6-HSL) and N-enanthyl-l-homoserine lactone (C7-HSL).

RESUMO

Although different conductive materials have been applied to anaerobic digestion, there has not been a material that can really combine their merits and make up their shortcoming from each other. In this study, a novel nitrogen-doped biochar supported magnetite (Fe3O4@N-BC) was synthesized. Various material characterizations confirmed that nitrogen atoms were successful doped into the biochar and magnetite precipitated on its surface. 5 g/L Fe3O4@N-BC achieved the highest promotion of cumulative CH4 production by 1.75 times compared with the blank group. Further metagenomic analysis revealed that Fe3O4@N-BC could increase the gene abundances of pilA, MmcA, Fpo, Rnf and HdrEd in bacteria Clotridium, Pseudomonas and Syntrophomonas and archaea Methanosarcina. Redundancy analysis showed that it was electrical conductivity and electron exchange capacity that were the key physicochemical characteristics for Fe3O4@N-BC to facilitating direct interspecies electron transfer. This study provides a reference for future conductive material synthesis and its application for anaerobic digestion.

RESUMO

Thermal hydrolysis (TH) pretreatment, as an anaerobic digestion (AD) pretreatment, has not only been verified in the laboratory but also frequently employed in actual engineering. However, the properties of anaerobic digestion liquid (ADL), such as high organic matter concentration, high ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) concentration, and low carbon-nitrogen ratio (C/N), have posed some difficulties in the follow-up treatment. To address the above issues, the autotrophic nitrogen removal (ANR) process is developed to treat ADL. Due to the NH4+-N, organic materials, toxic and harmful substances in the ADL that might directly impact the activity of functional bacteria, the ADL should be treated before being fed into the ANR process. This paper provided a focused review of the thermal hydrolysis-anaerobic digestion process (TH-ADP) mechanism and the ANR mechanism, summarized the existing difficulties in the treatment of thermal hydrolysis-anaerobic digestion liquid (TH-ADL), assessed the research status thoroughly, and offered the potential solutions to the problems.

RESUMO

Although magnetite has been widely investigated in anaerobic digestion (AD), its role in the practical AD of waste-activated sludge (WAS) after thermal hydrolysis pretreatment (THP) and its size effect remain unclear. In this study, magnetite with four different particle sizes was added during the AD of WAS after THP. With the reduction of magnetite particle size, cumulative methane production was increased, while the optimal dosage of magnetite decreased, with 0.1 µm magnetite at an optimal dosage of 2 g/L achieving the highest cumulative methane production increase of 111.97 % compared with the blank group (without magnetite). Smaller magnetite particles increased α-glucosidase and protease activities, coenzyme F420 concentration, and electron-transport system activity (20.30 %, 173.02 %, 60.39 % and 158.08 % higher respectively than the blank group). The size of magnetite also influenced the establishment of direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) during AD. Based on the analysis of the pilA gene abundance, magnetite with a large particle size could promote the formation of e-pili in syntrophic electroactive bacteria (Clostridium, Syntrophomonas, and Pseudomonas) and methanogens (Methanospirillum), thereby completing electron transfer. However, small-sized magnetite particles stimulated DIET by enhancing the secretion of conductive proteins in extracellular polymeric substances and membrane-bound enzymes (Fpo) in Methanosarcina.

RESUMO

Thermal hydrolysis pretreatment could release organic sufficiently from solid into liquid phase to accelerate the high solid sludge anaerobic digestion. Thus, up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) could be a promising energy recovery process to treat thermal hydrolyzed sludge dewatering liquor with significantly augmented the organic loading rate (OLR). In this study, its performance was investigated using a lab-scale UASB to treat sludge dewatering liquor after 165 °C, 30 min thermal hydrolysis pretreatment. The results show that 85.57% of the organic in thermal hydrolyzed sludge dewatering liquor could be converted to methane. The UASB adapts to high OLR stably, and the COD removal efficiency was 71.98 ± 1.95% at OLR of 18.35 ± 0.78 kgCOD·(m3·d)-1, and the gap between the maximum potential and experimental methane production yields could be observed during different OLRs. It could be explained as the methanogenesis rate decreased due to the shift of dominant pathway from acetoclastic methanogenesis to syntrophic acetate oxidation following hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis. Methanospirillum became the dominant methanogen with the increase of OLR. In addition, the methane production yield and rate would be hindered till the ammonia nitrogen concentration exceeds 4 g·L-1. RESUMO

Anaerobic co-digestion can effectively break the limitations of mono-digestion. However, there are still some problems such as long residence time, unsatisfactory methane yield, and unstable performance for co-digestion of sewage sludge (SS) and food waste (FW). Therefore, the SS in the reactor treating co-digestion of SS and FW is considered to be pretreated by thermal hydrolysis. In this work, the anaerobic co-digestion of SS of thermal hydrolysis pretreatment (THP) and FW significantly improved the stability, methane production of the digestive reactor, and dewaterability of the digested sludge. The R6 obtained the most cumulative methane production (315.76 mL/g VS). In addition, compared to R3, the cumulative methane production and maximum methane production rate of R5 increased by 9.93% and 14.56%, respectively. The dewaterability of R4, R5, and R6 was improved, while the dewatering performance of the R3 decreased to a greater extent. The results of the kinetic model fitting were consistent with the experimental results. Among them, the hydrolysis constants (Kh) of anaerobic co-digestion of THP-SS and FW were 0.121, 0.130, and 0.114 d-1, respectively, which were higher than those of other groups. And the estimated lag time (λ) of co-digestion was also lower than that of mono-digestion groups. Microbial community analysis indicated that the bacterial diversity and richness of anaerobic co-digested groups of THP-SS and FW were enhanced, while the methanogens with acetoclastic pathway became the main methanogenic microorganisms. This work provides essential information on anaerobic co-digestion containing different THP-SS contents.
