RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Graduate nursing education is the main way to train high-quality nursing personnel. Globally, the nursing education system has been gradually improved, forming a multi-level, multi-channel, and multi-specification education system including secondary, specialized, undergraduate, and postgraduate. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the research hotspots and trends of nursing postgraduate education in China by using bibliometric methods, and to provide reference for scholars at home and abroad to understand the current status of this field. METHODS: Literature related to graduate nursing education was searched in the Chinese full-text journal database (CNKI) from January 2000 to May 2022 and analyzed using CiteSpace software. RESULTS: A total of 998 kinds of literature were included, with a growing trend in the number of articles issued. The research hotspots and trends of nursing graduate education in China are clinical practice, cultivation mode, and core competence. CONCLUSION: Chinese nursing graduate education is improving. Foreign experience should be drawn upon, combined with the hotspots and trends summarized in this study, to promote the development of nursing graduate education in China.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to quantify faculty and student perceptions of scholarly activities for doctor of nursing practice (DNP) and PhD leaders. BACKGROUND: The American Association of Colleges of Nursing describes DNP as a practice-focused degree and PhD as a research-focused degree. In 2016, the Council on Graduate Education for Administration in Nursing (now Association for Leadership Science in Nursing) published in the Journal of Nursing Administration sample practice objectives for DNP and research objectives for PhD leaders. METHODS: Using the published objectives, we surveyed faculty and students to quantify congruence with the publication and consistency within groups. The data informed intraprofessional education constructed using action research. RESULTS: There was low congruence between faculty and student responses with the article. PhD faculty had the least, and PhD students, the greatest, consistency in survey responses. CONCLUSIONS: Confusion exists within our faculty and students around differentiating PhD and DNP scholarly activities. Data supported need to clarify scholarly role boundaries through intraprofessional education.

RESUMO

Leadership is a core curricular element of PhD programs in nursing. Our PhD faculty began a dialogue about being a leader, a steward of the discipline. We asked ourselves: (a) What expertise do PhD prepared nurse needs to begin to steward the discipline? (b) How do faculty engage PhD nursing students to assume responsibility for stewarding the discipline? Lastly, (c) How do we work with PhD nursing students to create their vision for how their work contributes to stewarding the discipline, from doctoral coursework throughout their career? We support the need for PhD graduates to have the skills to generate knowledge, conserve that which is important, and transform by disseminating new knowledge to a broad audience. Examples of nurses stewarding the discipline when pioneering research, critiquing traditional approaches to inquiry or trends in nursing practice, and developing policy, are highlighted along with examples of how PhD nursing students begin to steward the discipline.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Broadly accessible curriculum that equips Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) with knowledge and skills to apply genomics in practice in the era of precision health is needed. Increased accessibility of genomics courses and updated curriculum will prepare APNs to be leaders in the precision health initiative. METHODS: Courses on genomics were redesigned using contemporary pedagogical approaches to online teaching. Content was based on the Essential Genetic and Genomic Competencies for Nurses with Graduate Degrees. RESULTS: The number of students enrolled (n = 10) was comparable to previous years with greater breadth of representation across nursing practice specialty areas (53% vs. 20%). Prior to the first course, students reported agreement with meeting 8% (3/38) of the competencies. By completion of the 3rd course, students reported 100% (38/38) agreement with meeting the competencies. CONCLUSIONS: Content on genomics sufficient to obtain self-perceived attainment of genomics competencies can be successfully delivered using contemporary pedagogical teaching approaches.

RESUMO

AIM: This article considers the systems leadership doctor of nursing practice degree as an option to increase nursing leadership roles and heighten presence at policy tables globally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Recent global reports emphasize core competencies needed for nursing leadership, particularly systems leadership and health policy, to successfully move the global health agenda forward. Using the Yale University School of Nursing programme as an exemplar, this paper is focused on the elements directly linked to leadership competencies and relevance of a systems leadership doctor of nursing practice programme globally. BACKGROUND/INTRODUCTION: The dramatic growth and wide variability of doctor of nursing practice programmes offered in all 50 US States have generated questions and debate. According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing as of May 2018, there are 121 schools that reported having a leadership focus in postmaster's doctor of nursing practice degree offering. Yet there has not been the same enthusiasm for development and implementation for a practice doctorate in nursing across the globe. SOURCES OF EVIDENCE: A narrative literature review was conducted aimed at addressing the relevance of a practice doctorate globally. This analysis of the literature included a search of peer-reviewed and grey literature. Nursing school websites were visited, and opinions of nurse leaders and students were sought. In addition, global reports that supported nursing leadership and their role in policy development were reviewed. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: Globally, nurses have a critical role in leading health systems. Developing a cadre of nurse leaders educated at the doctoral level who can communicate with policymakers and develop strategies to meet health systems' goals is necessary. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING, HEALTH AND EDUCATION POLICY: In recent global health reports and campaigns, strengthening nursing leadership and presence at policymaking tables are recurring themes. Offering a systems leadership doctor of nursing practice degree is one viable option to increase doctorally prepared nurse leaders for nursing policy and practice engagement. This calls for work with country and regional governments, regulatory bodies and nursing associations to empower nursing to contribute fully.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: In Italy, the nursing doctoral programs were established in 2006, and after ten years we though it would be important to understand how nursing research in Italy has developed thanks to its four doctoral schools of nursing. Our research question was: How have the Italian doctoral schools of nursing contributed to the development of nursing research in the last ten years? METHODS: A national descriptive observational was conducted to collect all the publications made by the four nursing doctoral schools in Florence, Genoa, L'Aquila, and Rome between 2006 and 2015. For the enrolment of the participants, an online survey was sent to the e-mail address of each student provided by the reference University. The publications collected through the CVs of the current and former doctoral students were then checked against Web Science. The publication trends were analysed considering the type of journal, the Impact Factor (IF), and the topics. RESULTS: A total of 478 papers published between 2006-2015 were retrieved, of which 226 (47.59%) were published in Italian journals and 250 (52,41%) on international journals. The great majority of the papers (59,21%) were published in 30 journals, of which 15 had an Impact Factor (range 0.236 - 3.755). The main topics were clinical care, research methods, education, management, ethics, and policies. CONCLUSIONS: Between 2006 and 2015, Italy has produced nursing knowledge and scientific data that can be used to improve the quality of care and facilitate discussions with health policy decision-makers in order to better address the incumbent heath challenges of the near future.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Faculty retirement has been a growing concern for the nursing education community given the impact it may have on preparing the future nursing workforce. PURPOSE: To estimate faculty retirements in 2016-2015 and to assess the impact of retirements on the faculty workforce. METHOD: The Least-Squares Regression and the Cohort Component Methods were used to project retirements. DISCUSSION: The study projected that total retirements in 2016-2025 would equal one third of faculty in 2015. Retirees are likely to come from current faculty aged 60 or older, and faculty aged 50-59 are likely to be their replacements. The impact of the retiring faculty on the faculty workforce will be huge given their overrepresentation in doctoral attainment, senior rank, and ability for graduate-level teaching. CONCLUSION: The findings suggest a sense of urgency for the nursing education community to address the impending exodus of senior faculty and to develop younger faculty for their successful succession.

RESUMO

The doctorate in nursing practice (DNP) role is quickly emerging across the United States in numerous practice settings, especially in hospitals, outpatient services, and academic institutions. There is now a need for guidelines to evaluate the enactment of the standards used to create DNP education and practice, competencies expected in practice, and the outcomes and value created by this role. This article presents a DNP Performance Demonstration and Impact template created on the basis of the AACN (American Association of Colleges of Nursing), NONPF (National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties), and AONE (American Organization of Nurse Executives) standards to assist leaders in evaluating DNP performance from a standards-driven perspective.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Doctors of Nursing Practice focus on leadership in evidence-based practice (EBP). EBP is influenced by one's beliefs in and implementation of EBP. Little is known to date about the EBP beliefs and implementation of Doctor of Nursing Practice students and outcomes of Doctor of Nursing Practice education. AIMS: Guided by the Advancing Research and Clinical practice through close Collaboration (ARCC) Model, the Evidence-Based Practice Beliefs (EBPB) and Implementation (EBPI) tools were used to assess the impact of EBP as a program pillar, curricular thread, and content area on EBPB and EBPI of Doctor of Nursing Practice-Family Nurse Practitioner students. METHODS: Five cohorts who completed the same curriculum were studied. Fifty-four of the 89 students across the five cohorts began and completed the study. RESULTS: Paired t-test for group effects showed statistical significance from pre- to post-measure in students overall EBPB, t = 4.4 (52), p < .001, and EBPI, t = 8.4 (52), p < .001. A large effect size of .75 standard deviation (SD) gain above the mean for EBPB, and a very large effect size of 1 SD gain above the mean for EBPI were observed. Repeated measures ANOVA showed that all cohorts made gains across the curriculum. Effect sizes for EBPB ranged from .25 to 1 SD above the mean, and .75 to 1.5 for EBPI. LINKING EVIDENCE TO ACTION: DNP students who are educated to be EBP leaders must have a curriculum that supports them in the knowledge and skill-set needed to translate evidence into practice. The ARCC Model can guide faculty in EBP curriculum development. EBPB and EBPI are valid and reliable measures to assess for gains across a curriculum. Through educational outcomes, educators can assess desired student outcomes for EBP across a curriculum and can build an evidence base for ongoing curriculum development.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the changes that occur in nursing education from the perspective of the Pro-Health programme and its impact on the professional practice of the graduate students of this programme. METHODS: This is a collective study conducted in southern Brazil. The cases were nursing courses contemplated with the Pro-Health programme. Interviews were conducted with health workers, professors, students, and graduates of the cases, followed by observation of the theory and practice activities of the basic care units, and document analysis of the political-educational project of the courses, in 2015. The data were organised and analysed using analytical questions. RESULTS: The programme reflects on the reorientation of the curriculum, on the encouragement and strengthening of permanent education, and on the integration of teaching and service. CONCLUSIONS: The programme is recognised for its effects on the education and work process of the graduates. However, local policies should be created to ensure the sustainability of teaching and service integration.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to determine the priorities for nursing administration research (NAR) in the United States. BACKGROUND: Previously known as the Council of Graduate Educators in Administrative Nursing, CGEAN provides an avenue for researchers and educators focused on NAR to partner, dialogue, obtain funding resources, and present their findings at a biennial International Nursing Administration Research Conference (INARC). In late 2013, with a goal of building consensus, CGEAN convened an INARC postconference to initiate the process of establishing critical NAR priorities for the future. METHODS: Data from a 3-staged Delphi study were used to identify relevant research topics and determine administrative research priorities. RESULTS: Eight final categories of NAR were determined. CONCLUSIONS: This study found economic valuing of nursing and designing effective future healthcare delivery systems to be high priorities for NAR.

RESUMO

The Accountable Care Act of 2010 is stimulating rapid transformations of healthcare systems. The shift from a focus on providing healthcare in a closed system to improving the health of communities demands rapid innovation by nurse leaders. Nurse leaders prepared at the doctorate of nursing practice level and PhD-prepared nursing health services researchers are needed to develop and evaluate best practices as they emerge. This column expands on the findings from CGEAN's Delphi study.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to compare the predictive validity, economic efficiency, and faculty staff satisfaction of a computerized test versus a personal interview as admission methods for graduate nursing studies. A mixed method study was designed, including cross-sectional and retrospective cohorts, interviews, and cost analysis. One hundred and thirty-four students in the Master of Nursing program participated. The success of students in required core courses was similar in both admission method groups. The personal interview method was found to be a significant predictor of success, with cognitive variables the only significant contributors to the model. Higher satisfaction levels were reported with the computerized test compared with the personal interview method. The cost of the personal interview method, in annual hourly work, was 2.28 times higher than the computerized test. These findings may promote discussion regarding the cost benefit of the personal interview as an admission method for advanced academic studies in healthcare professions.
