RESUMEN
When I was first introduced to the Six Sigma process, I resisted it with every ounce of energy I had. I continuously fabricated reasons so that I was unable to complete the training that my company required. When it came time for my performance review, I could not hide the truth from my manager; I had not completed the required training. It was then that I began my journey into the world of Six Sigma. Once I understood that a black belt and a green belt certification had nothing to do with karate, I felt much better.

Nanotechnology is a rapidly advancing area of science, and development increasingly will be seen in an array of manufacturing sectors, including sporting goods, cosmetics, clothing, transistors, and biomedical products. Nanoparticles are so small that they interact with other substances at the atomic or subatomic level. They do not behave like solids, liquids, or gases, and have unique mechanical and electronic properties. A serious lack of information about the human health and environmental implications of nanomaterials exists, but scientific experts agree that the potential effects of nanomaterials on working populations and the environment is a serious consideration. Occupational health nurses should be aware of the potential use of nanotechnology in their workplaces and stay aware of emerging information on methods to protect worker health.

Specialty nursing certification programs, such as that administered by the American Board for Occupational Health Nurses, Inc. (ABOHN), must be firmly based on current practice to maintain validity. To determine this, ABOHN performed its most recent job analysis and role delineation study between 1992 and 1994. A comprehensive survey tool was developed by ABOHN Board members, and administered to all 3,805 certified occupational health nurses in practice at the time of the study. With a final return rate of 42.7%, the results were believed to be representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to practice occupational health nursing in the United States at the proficient level of practice. The results of the study formed the basis for the ABOHN test blueprints and the creation of two credentials for occupational health nurses: the Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN) and the Certified Occupational Health Nurse Specialist (COHN-S).

An occupational health service can be an integral part of any company. It is incumbent on the industry to conduct a thorough assessment of the need for such a service and then support the service from a financial and resource perspective. Consequently, staffing and equipping an occupational health service adequately are dependent on the services to be delivered and the type of professional staff hired. All occupational health programs can be conducted in a cost effective manner when the goals and mission are in alignment with company goals, management supports appropriate funding, and space supports the delivery of quality health care.

Although the most important occasion for the use of the above techniques is early on in the call, remember that each time you want to change direction or change topic you have to 'gain attention' all over again. In the next article we will look at some other selling issues, namely, questioning and listening skills, features and benefits, behavioural selling and keeping the 'back door' closed. In the meantime, if you have any questions about selling, or a management issue, then feel free to contact me through OH magazine-anonymously if you prefer-and I will be pleased to answer your questions.
