AIMS: To identify healthcare professionals' digital health competence profiles and explore associated factors to digital health competence in healthcare settings. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. METHODS: Data were collected from 817 healthcare professionals from nine organizations with an electronic questionnaire by using Digital Health Competence instrument (42 items) and Aspects Associated with Digital Health instrument (15 items) between 1st March and 31st July 2022. K-means clustering was used to describe digital health competence profiles. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to explore associated factors. RESULTS: Analysis revealed three digital health competence profiles: A - high competence (n = 336), B - intermediate competence (n = 352) and C - low competence (n = 129). Between the profiles, digital health competence showed significant differences (p < .001). Recent graduation year, working in outpatient environments and leader or specialist position were associated with higher digital health competence. Organizational practices and the influence from colleagues improved competence in human-centred remote counselling, digital solutions as part of work, competence in utilizing and evaluating digital solutions and ethical competence. Support from management improved digital solutions as part of work and ethical competence. CONCLUSION: Nursing and allied health professionals working in other than outpatient environments should be specifically acknowledged when digital health competence development initiatives are designed and targeted. The positive influence from colleagues could be harnessed by enhancing their involvement in digital health competence development methods such as orientation, mentoring or coaching. Additionally, managers should take a stronger role in supporting different areas of digital health competence. IMPACT: This was the first study that explored healthcare professionals' digital health competence profiles and associated factors. The detection of healthcare professionals' digital health competence profiles guides the development of digital health education according to different needs in healthcare environments. This paper discusses the role of the workplace in digital occupational health as part of an increasingly digitalized working life. Digital occupational health can be considered to consist of at least the following digitalized components: a) occupational health services and data, b) human resource data, c) group-level field data collected from the work environment and employees, and d) individual-level field data collected for personal use only. These data and related processes form a basis for so called data-driven management of occupational health and safety. To collect such data and keep it updated, it is important to pay attention to: a) worker acceptance, b) user friendliness, c) data validity, integrity, and protection, d) adequate resources, and e) ethical and effective use of the data. The current literature suggests that there are promising mobile and wearable devices and eHealth solutions to support worker health. To use them effectively, it is good to pay attention to the implementation process in the workplace. Ultimately, trust and collaboration among all parties are the cornerstones for gaining benefits from digital occupational health.

AIMS: Heart failure (HF) is a common cause of mortality and (re)hospitalizations. The NWE-Chance project explored the feasibility of providing hospitalizations at home (HH) supported by a newly developed digital health platform. The aim of this study was to explore the perceived usability by healthcare professionals (HCPs) of a digital platform in addition to HH for HF patients. METHODS AND RESULTS: A prospective, international, multicentre, single-arm interventional study was conducted. Sixty-three patients and 22 HCPs participated. The HH consisted of daily home visits by the nurse and use of the platform, consisting of a portable blood pressure device, weight scale, pulse oximeter, a wearable chest patch to measure vital signs (heart rate, respiratory rate, activity level, and posture), and an eCoach for the patient. Primary outcome was usability of the platform measured by the System Usability Scale halfway and at the end of the study. Overall usability was rated as sufficient (mean score 72.1 ± 8.9) and did not differ between the measurements moments (P = 0.690). The HCPs reported positive experiences (n = 7), negative experiences (n = 13), and recommendations (n = 6) for the future. Actual use of the platform was 79% of the HH days. CONCLUSION: A digital health platform to support HH was considered usable by HCPs, although actual use of the platform was limited. Therefore, several improvements in the integration of the digital platform into clinical workflows and in defining the precise role of the digital platform and its use are needed to add value before full implementation. In this paper, we describe current pressures on health human resources (HHRs) in the Canadian context and related factors that impact equity-deserving communities/populations. We explore issues of HHR challenges in rural, remote and urban underserved contexts and explore the associated benefits and challenges of incorporating digital health (DH). We present examples and evidence of integrating hybrid models of care as a means of supporting HHRs via DH in the publicly funded health system.

The rapid growth of digital health and use of technology has led to an increased demand for qualified professionals in the areas of health informatics (HI) and health information management (HIM). This is reflected by the growth in the number of educational programs and graduates in these areas. However, to develop a culture of digital health innovation in Canada, the role of research needs to be critically examined. In this paper we discuss some of these issues around the relation between research and innovation, and the development of an innovation culture in health informatics, health information management and digital health in Canada. Recommendations for facilitating this development in terms of funding, granting and policy are also explored.

There is broad agreement regarding fundamental digital health competencies that clinical health professionals should possess. However, there is still no clear way to observe and assess their application, during the actual work practices undertaken in clinical settings. The present paper tackles this competency-practice gap. It describes a novel health workforce research process to evolve competency statements into entrustable professional activities (EPAs) for using digital health and informatics in a clinical profession. It illustrates the use of the EPA-DH-CP framework in the context of physiotherapy. This framework offers a systematic approach for any clinical profession to develop EPAs that set out their expectation of how practitioners will demonstrate relevant digital health competencies. It can inform pre-clinical education and continuing professional development in digital health, and implementation of changes in scopes and standards of digital health clinical practice. It can support interprofessional evaluation of digital health EPAs and other EPAs.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Digital health (DH) is a broad concept, bringing together technology and healthcare, that is playing an increasingly important role in the daily routine of healthcare professionals (HCPs) and promises to contribute to the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease. There are no solid data on the position of Portuguese HCPs toward the implementation of DH in cardiovascular medicine. This national cross-sectional study aims to provide a snapshot of DH implementation in Portuguese cardiovascular HCP routines and to identify both expectations and barriers to its adoption. METHODS: An 18-question survey was created specifically for this study and distributed to 1174 individuals on the Portuguese Society of Cardiology mailing list. RESULTS: We collected 117 valid responses (response rate 10%). Almost all participants had smartphones and laptops, and two-thirds had tablets. Electronic medical information systems were the most used DH tool (84% of respondents) and were considered the most important for improving cardiovascular care. Implantable technologies (sensors and devices), telemedicine and social media were used by more than two out of three respondents and considered «very important¼ or «extremely important¼ by most of them. Most participants showed positive expectations regarding the impact of DH in cardiovascular medicine: 78% agreed that DH could improve health outcomes, 64% that it promotes health literacy and 63% that it could decrease healthcare costs. The top-rated barriers were patients' inability to use smartphones, limited access to electronic devices, and lack of legal regulation of DH. CONCLUSION: Most Portuguese cardiovascular HCPs had at least three electronic devices (mainly smartphones, laptops and tablets) and showed positive expectations regarding DH's current and future impact on cardiovascular medicine. Patient DH literacy, technology adoption, and DH regulation were identified as the most important barriers to increasing the adoption of DH tools in cardiovascular medicine.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed significant gaps in healthcare access, quality, and the urgent need for enhancing the capacity of digital health human resources, particularly in Latin America. During the pandemic, online courses and telehealth initiatives supported by governmental agencies, the Pan American Health Organization, and other public and private resources, have played a crucial role in meeting training demands. This article discusses the role of capacity building programs in digital health within the context of Latin America, with a specific focus on the Peruvian case. We highlight the development of digital health competencies and related policies, while also describing selected experiences related to capacity building in this field. Additionally, we discuss the pivotal role of collaborative partnerships among institutions and countries, emphasizing the importance of culturally relevant training programs in digital health. These initiatives have the potential to accelerate training and research opportunities in Latin America, drawing on the involvement of government agencies, non-governmental organizations, industry, universities, professional societies, and communities.
