Edward Delos Churchill, one of the most notorious American surgeons of the 20th century, influenced countless surgeons and set medical practices that were used for decades. His scope of interests included surgery of the lungs, heart, thyroid, parathyroid glands, and military surgery among others. Churchill was one of the first to expand the field of the newly found parathyroid bodies by performing several experimental excisions of the glands and publishing numerous guidelines based on his innovative work. Additionally, he aspired to address many of the literature gaps that led him to conclusions that would benefit both the surgeons and patients throughout the country. Most importantly, his deep interest in endocrinology and his aggregate approach of medicine led him to discoveries that paved the way to the modern endocrine surgery practices.

BACKGROUND: Ferdinand von Arlt (1812-1887) was one of the greatest ophthalmologists of the 19th century. From 1856 to 1883 he was the head of the First University Eye Clinic in Vienna. The aim of this paper is to show the places where he lived during his working life in Vienna, because it has not been written about so far. METHODS: The article is based on an analysis of the data from Viennese address books of that time, the archives of the University of Vienna, medico-historical books, scientific articles, and internet sources. RESULTS: During his life in Vienna, Ferdinand von Arlt changed his residential address four times. He lived at Glacis, in Wickenburggasse, Mölkerbastei, and Bellariastrasse. He also had a country house not far from Vienna in Pötzleinsdorf. The paper describes in detail the places in Vienna where he lived and the eye clinic at which he worked. A brief biographical review of von Arlt and his family is also given. CONCLUSION: Ferdinand von Arlt was an important representative of the Vienna School of Ophthalmology. The places where he stayed in Vienna were close to the eye clinic. The buildings in which he lived were in representative areas in the city of Vienna. Ultimately he had a large modern apartment, as his family grew over time and with him lived his wife, brother, son, and daughter with their families. This work is a contribution to his rich biography and a wish that the places where he lived Vienna not be forgotten.

The article is devoted to the biography and scientific contribution of Miron Semyonovich Vovsi, the eminent Soviet internist, organizer of army internal medicine. For the first time, the materials of his personal records from the Yuriev (Tartu) University and verified date of his birth are publicly introduced. Miron Semyonovich (Meer Simonovic) Vovsi was born on May 12 (24) 1897, in the township of Kreslavka (actually Kraslava, Latvia). In 1915, he entered the medical faculty of Yuriev (actually Tartu) University. In 1918 he was transferred to the Moscow University. He, after serving as military doctor, studied and worked under the guidance of D. D. Pletnev, I. M. Wiechert and V. F. Zelenin. In 1934, he moved to the Botkin hospital and after defending his doctoral thesis, became the head of the Department of internal medicine in the Central institute of advanced medical training, where he worked for more than 30 years. During the Second World War, he was the chief internist of the Red Army. He was engaged in the organization and improvement of army internal medicine. In 1952, during the so-called "physicians case", he was arrested and tortured for 5 months. After his release, he returned to teaching, medical and scientific activities. He died in 1960. His major areas of scientific contribution to medicine are nephrology, cardiology and army internal medicine.

The Nordic country Faroe Islands consists of 18 mountain islands situated in the North Atlantic Sea. In the late 1800s, nursing in the Faroe Islands was behind international standards. A transition towards organised nursing commenced when Danish deaconesses arrived in 1897; their missions were to serve as nurses and train Faroese women in nursing. The overall aim of this research is to add to the history of Faroese nurses' training and work during the first decades of the 1900s, decades when Faroese nursing became visible through the presence of deaconesses and trained nurses. With historiographic and biographic approaches and in the context of Faroese history and nursing theory and research, we present accounts about four Faroese nurses' living, training and work during the three first decades of the 1900s. These years were progressive for Faroese nursing in hospital care and public health around on the islands, and a struggle to combat tuberculosis took place. We conclude by emphasising the importance of considering the beginning of professional nursing in a small faraway country where resilient nurses worked with ingenuity and often exceeded geographic and professional boundaries to help and support sick and injured compatriots, promoting their health and well-being.

Xenophon J Contiades was born in Marseille in 1903. After a brilliant career as a surgeon and Chef de Clinique in Paris receiving numerous awards and publishing more than 100 manuscripts, Contiades returned to Greece to become Professor of Surgery at the University of Athens being appointed as Director of the Surgery Clinic at the "Hippokration" General Hospital of Athens. At the beginning of the Second World War, Professor Contiades exhorted his students to defend their country. He concluded his final lecture by saying: "Gentlemen, you know what happened to our homeland. I believe that each one of us will do his duty. I wish you good luck. The lesson is over!" As Director of the Surgery Clinic of the Ioannina Military Hospital at the war front, he organized the clinic for the treatment of frostbitten and seriously injured warriors. He died as a hero during a German Nazi air strike on the Hospital building bearing the Red Cross sign on 20 April 1941 (Easter day) while operating on a patient who survived. We should not forget a man who lead a meaningful and glorious but short life dedicated to the service of his country and mankind in very difficult times.

In the early medieval era, in the time which is called the Islamic Golden Age, medicine flourished through the practice of Persian physicians (9th to 12th century AD). Abu-Sahl al-Masihi (died circa 1010 AD) was one of the physicians in that period who had great influence on the progress of medicine by his own writings as well as his influence on great scholars like Biruni and Avicenna as their teacher. He was a polymath and had many writings in various fields of science, in particular medical sciences. Some of his manuscripts in medicine were Al-Mia fil-Tibb (Book of the Hundred), Kitab al-Teb al-Koli (The General Medicine), Ezhar al-Hekmat Allah Ta'ala fi Khalgh al-Ensan (God's Mystery on the Creation of Man), Resalat al-Adwiya (Treatise of Drugs), Osool Elm Nabz (the Principles of Pulse), and Resala f i Tahqiq Amral-Waba' (On the determination of the matter of infectious diseases). As a sign of his impact in Persian medicine, many later physicians (until 19th century) referred to and cited his works in their manuscripts several times.

Resumen Este trabajo reconstruye la trayectoria del médico argentino Germinal Rodríguez en diálogo con la historia social de la salud y la enfermedad y con una reciente corriente historiográfica de biografías médicas. En base a una metodología cualitativa de análisis documental, analizamos expedientes oficiales de la Universidad de Buenos Aires, fuentes periodísticas, libros de Rodríguez y otras fuentes secundarias. Como resultado, podemos afirmar que su vida profesional estuvo marcada por la enseñanza universitaria y una exitosa carrera académica, así como por su intensa militancia socialista entre 1920-1930. Rodríguez fue también un divulgador, un experto de consulta en políticas públicas para su partido y funcionario estatal en los años del peronismo.
Abstract This article examines the career of Argentine doctor Germinal Rodríguez, situating it within the context of social history of medicine and the recent trend of medical biographies. Using a qualitative documentary analysis methodology, we analyzed various sources, including official records from the University of Buenos Aires, journalistic articles, and books by Rodríguez himself. Our analysis reveals that Rodríguez's enjoyed a successful academic career in university teaching, while concurrently engaging in active socialist activism between 1920-1930. Beyond academia, Rodríguez served as a science popularizer, a policy consultant for his party, and even a public official during the Peronist era.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to analyze nurse Josicélia Dumêt Fernandes' life story, with emphasis on her work in the psychiatry and mental health fields. Methods: historical, qualitative research. Semi-structured interviews and documentary research were used as data collection techniques, collected from September to October 2021. For data analysis, we opted for the content analysis method and comparison with the Foucauldian philosophical framework. Results: four categories emerged: Transforming herself and mental health practices; (Re)framing professional practice; Nursing practice and power relations; and The paths and implications in the psychiatry and mental health fields. Final Considerations: the study of the biographer demonstrates a search for transformation of herself and mental health practices, with a rupture in paradigms and reframing of her practice in psychiatry and mental health.
RESUMEN Objetivos: analizar la historia de vida de la enfermera Josicélia Dumêt Fernandes, con énfasis en su trabajo en el área de psiquiatría y salud mental. Métodos: investigación histórica, cualitativa. Se utilizaron como técnicas de recolección de datos entrevistas semiestructuradas e investigación documental, recolectados de septiembre a octubre de 2021. Para el análisis de los datos, se optó por el método de análisis de contenido y comparación con el marco filosófico foucaultiano. Resultados: surgieron cuatro categorías: Transformación del yo y de las prácticas de salud mental; El (re)significado de la práctica profesional; Práctica de enfermería y relaciones de poder; y Los caminos e implicaciones en el campo de la psiquiatría y la salud mental. Consideraciones Finales: el estudio de la biógrafa demuestra una búsqueda de transformación de ella misma y de las prácticas de salud mental, rompiendo paradigmas y resignificando su práctica en psiquiatría y salud mental.

Para a análise dos dados, optou-se pelo método de análise de conteúdo e a confrontação com o referencial filosófico foucaultiano. Resultados: emergiram quatro categorias: A transformação de si e das práticas em saúde mental; A (re)significação da prática profissional; A prática de enfermagem e as relações de poder; e Os caminhos e implicações no campo da psiquiatria e da saúde mental. Considerações Finais: o estudo da biografada demonstra uma busca por transformação de si e das práticas de saúde mental, com ruptura de paradigmas e ressignificações da sua prática em psiquiatria e saúde mental.

Life-writing is an increasingly recognized genre including, among other forms of expression, biography, memoir, journals, diaries and letters. In addition to providing a source of information about potentially significant historical and social dimensions of medicine, the life-writing of physicians also offers the public a greater sense of the writers' inner lives and provides a resource of wisdom and companionship to other physicians and health care professionals across time and various stages of personal and professional development. This kind of life-writing, when considered alongside patient accounts, can further contribute to what Anne Hunsaker Hawkins has called "a medicine that is truly human".

Objetivo: apresentar a trajetória de Yvonne da Silva Lara na enfermagem brasileira. Método: método histórico com base documental na perspectiva da microanálise com ênfase em biografia. Os dados coletados dos documentos pessoais e institucionais foram triangulados com a literatura de aderência e organizados nos eixos: dados pessoais, processo de formação na enfermagem e trajetória profissional. Resultados: a análise desses dados esclareceu a divergência no ano de nascimento da biografada e a revelou como enfermeira de formação com especialização, diversidade de conhecimentos e significativa vivência prática. Conclusão: o legado deixado foi ter articulado seus saberes e ideais em prol do ethos do cuidado ao ser humano(AU)
Objective: to present the trajectory of Yvonne da Silva Lara in Brazilian nursing. Method: historical method based on documents from the perspective of microanalysis with an emphasis on biography. Data collected from personal and institutional documents were triangulated with the adherence literature and organized into axes: personal data, nursing education process and professional trajectory. Results: the analysis of these data clarified the divergence in the biographed woman's year of birth and revealed her as a trained nurse with specialization, with a diversity of knowledge and significant practical experience. Conclusion: the legacy she left was having articulated her knowledge and ideals in favor of the ethos of caring for human beings(AU)
Objetivo: presentar la trayectoria de Yvonne da Silva Lara en la enfermería brasileña. Método: método histórico basado en documentos desde la perspectiva del microanálisis con énfasis en la biografía. Los datos recolectados de los documentos personales e institucionales fueron triangulados con la literatura de adherencia y organizados en los ejes: datos personales, proceso de formación de enfermería y trayectoria profesional. Resultados: El análisis de estos datos aclaró la divergencia en el año de nacimiento de la biografiada y la reveló como siendo una enfermera de formación con especialización, con diversidad de saberes y significativa experiencia práctica. ABSTRACT Objective: To present the biographical narrative interviews and biographical case reconstruction as methodological alternatives in nursing research. Methods: Theoretical-reflective study that presents the aspects of the biographical narrative method and of reconstruction of biographical cases according to the German interpretive social research framework developed by the sociologist Gabriele Rosenthal. Results and discussion: The reflection was organized into three topics: conceptual interpretative aspects of biographical research; biographical narrative interview in the production of data; reconstruction of biographical case. This framework proved to be adequate to access and understand the perspective of the social agents in the face of practices and phenomena in the field of Nursing. Conclusion: Approach of biographical narratives is an important tool for research in Nursing, since it makes it possible to understand the lives of individuals based on their own actions and interpretations.
RESUMEN Objetivo: Presentar la entrevista narrativa biográfica y la reconstrucción de caso biográfico como alternativas metodológicas en investigación en Enfermería. Métodos: Estudio teórico-reflexivo sobre la presentación de los aspectos del método narrativo biográfico y la reconstrucción de un caso biográfico según el marco de investigación social interpretativo alemán desarrollado por la socióloga Gabriele Rosenthal. Resultados y discusión: La reflexión se organiza entresejes: aspectos conceptuales interpretativos de investigaciones biográficas; entrevista narrativa biográfica en la producción de datos; reconstrucción biográfica de caso y tipología. Este marco se mostro adecuado para acceder y comprenderla perspectiva de los agentes sociales frente a las prácticas y fenómenos en el campo de la Enfermería. Conclusión: Abordaje de las narrativas biográficas es una herramienta importante para la investigación en Enfermería, ya que posibilita comprenderla vida de los individuos a partir de sus propias acciones e interpretaciones.

RESUMEN Fundamento: en la historia de la educación médica, varios han sido los docentes que han dejado su impronta en la formación de las nuevas generaciones. Objetivo: caracterizar la prolífera actividad profesional desarrollada por el Dr. C. Arturo Teodoro Menéndez Cabezas, con énfasis en los procesos investigativos, como legado pedagógico en la enseñanza médica. Métodos: se realizó una investigación etnográfica, a través del análisis histórico lógico de su vida, para caracterizar su actuación. Se utilizó la observación participante y la entrevista con informantes claves, como métodos cualitativos. Sin hacer énfasis en la descripción bibliográfica, se abordaron elementos de la vida y obra pedagógica, aspectos a destacar por la transcendencia de su legado a las nuevas generaciones de profesionales de la salud dentro y fuera del país. Resultados: se establecen las características sociopolíticas y educacionales que constituyen antecedentes a la actuación educacional del bioquímico, se pormenorizan las actividades realizadas en cada uno de los aspectos que caracterizan al profesor universitario de la Cuba actual y se revela mediante el criterio valorativo los aportes que caracterizan su actuación, como médico-educador social. Conclusiones: el análisis y las valoraciones realizadas en el transcurso de la investigación permitieron, caracterizar la obra educativa del profesor Arturo, en relación con los componentes asistencial, docente, gerenciales e investigativos. Se fundamentan sus aportes a la Educación Médica, sobre la base de: ejemplo personal, concepciones pedagógicas, pensamiento ideológico, relaciones interpersonales y sobre todo su condición y preparación científico-técnica como bioquímico, en la dualidad en su labor como médico y profesor.
ABSTRACT Background: there have been several professors in the history of medical education that have left their imprint in the formation of new generations. Objective: to characterize the prolific professional activity developed by PhD. Arturo Teodoro Menéndez Cabezas, with emphasis in the investigative processes, as pedagogic legacy in the medical education. Methods: an ethnographic research was carried out through a historic-logical analysis of his life to characterize his way of acting. The observation and the interview with key informants were used as qualitative methods. Without making special attention to the bibliographic description, element of his life and work were approached as aspects to highlight due to the transcendence of his legacy to the new generations of health professionals in and out of the country. Results: the sociopolitical and educational characteristics that constitute the antecedents of the biochemist educational acting were established, the activities that characterize the university professor in Cuba are detailed, and the contributions that characterize his acting as doctor-social educator were revealed. Conclusions: the analysis and appreciations carried out during the research allowed characterizing the educative work of Professor Arturo, related to the assistance, docent, managerial and investigative components. His contributions to the Medical Education are found out on the base of his personal example, pedagogical conceptions, ideological thinking, interpersonal relations and above all his scientific-technical condition and preparation as biochemist, in his double work as doctor and professor.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to analyze the life and career of Anayde Corrêa de Carvalho and her contributions to nursing in Bahia. Methods: oral history of her life and documentary research, with thematic content analysis. Results: three categories were found: Personal Trajectory of Anayde Corrêa de Carvalho; The School of Nursing of Bahia; and School of Nursing of the University of São Paulo and Brazilian Nursing Association. Final Considerations: this study made it possible to analyze the life of an ethical and committed nurse, who dedicated herself to nursing education and research and contributed significantly to the construction of the image and development of nursing as a profession in Bahia.

Consideraciones Finales: este estudio permitió analizar la historia de vida de una enfermera ética y comprometida, que se dedicó a la educación e investigación de enfermería y contribuyó significativamente a la construcción de la imagen y el desarrollo de la profesión en Bahía.

BACKGROUND: A nursing career can last for more than 40 years, during which continuing professional development is essential. Nurses participate in a variety of learning activities that correspond with their developmental motives. Lifespan psychology shows that work-related motives change with age, leading to the expectation that motives for continuing professional development also change. Nevertheless, little is known about nurses' continuing professional development strategies in different age groups. OBJECTIVES: To explore continuing professional development strategies among younger, middle-aged, and older nurses. METHODS: A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews, from a biographical perspective. Data were analysed using a vertical process aimed at creating individual learning biographies, and a horizontal process directed at discovering differences and similarities between age groups. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-one nurses in three age groups from general and academic hospitals in the Netherlands. RESULTS: In all age groups, daily work was an important trigger for professional development on the ward. Performing extra or new tasks appeared to be an additional trigger for undertaking learning activities external to the ward. Learning experiences in nurses' private lives also contributed to their continuing professional development. Besides these similarities, the data revealed differences in career stages and private lives, which appeared to be related to differences in continuing professional development strategy; 'gaining experience and building a career' held particularly true among younger nurses, 'work-life balance' and 'keeping work interesting and varied' to middle-aged nurses, and 'consistency at work' to older nurses. CONCLUSIONS: Professional development strategies can aim at performing daily patient care, extra tasks and other roles. Age differences in these strategies appear to relate to tenure, perspectives on the future, and situations at home. These insights could help hospitals to orientate continuing professional development approaches toward the needs of all age groups. This should be particularly relevant in the face of present demographic changes in the nursing workforce.

Florence Nightingale é uma personalidade ímpar na história das mulheres. Seu destaque está na contribuição que deu ao mundo ao construir bases profissionais para a enfermagem bem como para a bioestatística. Objetivos: elencar o conteúdo programático ministrado sobre a biografia de Florence Nightingale em Cursos de Graduação em Enfermagem e discutir sua importância para a formação da identidade profissional. Método: Estudo documental que usou como fontes o Plano de Aula sobre a personagem Florence Nightingale ministrado por professores de sete Instituições de Ensino Superior. A análise e discussão foram feitas à luz de autores que versam sobre o ensino de história e pelo referencial de identidade social e identidade profissional de Claude Dubar. Resultados: a biografia de Nightingale é tratada em todos os programas dos cursos estudados, com destaque para seus feitos na guerra da Criméia e as consequências para a profissionalização da enfermagem, também se evidencia a transdisciplinaridade a partir deste tema. Considerações finais: a biografia mostra o legado de Nightingale enquanto precursora da enfermagem moderna e permite evidenciar a relação da identidade profissional e identidade social da enfermagem.
Florence Nightingale is a unique personality in the history of women. Her highlight is the contribution she made to the world in building professional bases for nursing as well as for biostatistics. Objectives: to list the syllabus taught on Florence Nightingale's biography in Undergraduate Nursing Courses and discuss its importance for the formation of professional identity. Method: Documentary study that used as sources the Lesson Plan on the character Florence Nightingale taught by teachers from seven Higher Education Institutions. The analysis and discussion were carried out in the light of authors dealing with the teaching of history and by Claude Dubar's social identity and professional identity. Results: Nightingale's biography is treated in all the programs of the courses studied, with emphasis on his achievements in the Crimean war and the consequences for the professionalization of nursing, the transdisciplinarity based on this theme is also evident. Final considerations: the biography shows the legacy of Nightingale as a precursor of modern nursing and allows to evidence the relationship of professional identity and social identity of nursing.
Florence Nightingale es una personalidad impar para la historia de las mujeres. Su notoriedad se por cuenta de la contribución que dio al mundo al construir bases profesionales para la enfermería, así como para la bioestadística. Objetivos: especificar el contenido programático impartido sobre la biografía de Florence Nightingale en cursos de graduación en enfermería y discutir su importancia para la formación de la identidad profesional. Método: Estudio documental usando como fuentes el plan de clase sobre el personaje Florence Nightingale impartido por profesores de siete instituciones de enseñanza superior. Los análisis y discusiones fueron hechos a la luz de autores que versan sobre la enseñanza de historia y bajo el referencial de identidad social y profesional de Claude Dubar. Resultados: la biografía de Nightingale es tratada en todos los programas de los cursos estudiados, siendo los hechos en la guerra de la Crimea y las consecuencias para la profesionalización de la enfermería los más destacados, además, se evidencia el carácter transdisciplinario a partir de este tema. Consideraciones finales: la biografía enseña el legado de Nightingale mientras precursora de la enfermería moderna y permite evidenciar la relación de la identidad profesional y social de la enfermería.

En este artículo se mencionan algunos aspectos de la acrisolada historia de vida del médico cubano Esteban Roberto Regalado García, quien el 27 de noviembre de 1960 fue designado por los estudiantes egresados del tercer curso de Medicina, después del 1ro de enero de 1959, para entregarle al Comandante en Jefe Fidel Castro Ruz, en un acto realizado en la escalinata de la Universidad de La Habana, una copia de la comunicación conocida como Declaración de principios; documento con fuerza de presente y presagio de futuro.
In this work some aspects of the purified life history of the Cuban doctor Esteban Roberto Regalado García are mentioned, who on November 27th, 1960 was designated by the students graduated from the third course of Medicine, after January 1st, 1959, to present the Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, in a ceremony that took place in the Havana University steps; with a copy of the communication known as Declaration of principles; a document with present force and future presage.

Objetivo: descrever a trajetória de vida de Haydée Guanais Dourado, para reafirmar o seu lugar na história daenfermagem baiana e sua contribuição à memória da enfermagem brasileira. Método: trata-se de estudo descritivo,de cunho histórico-social baseado em depoimentos orais e documentos textuais pertencentes ao Núcleo de Memóriada Escola de Enfermagem da Universidade Federal da Bahia, livros e artigos que retratassem a história de vida deHaydée Guanais Dourado. Resultados: o resgate da história de Haydée permitiu a identificação de contornos da suavida e trajetória profissional e contribuições à enfermagem brasileira. Destacam-se: luta na implantação da primeiraEscola de Enfermagem do Norte-Nordeste do país, mobilização para levantamento das necessidades de enfermagemno Brasil e elaboração da legislação profissional. Conclusão: as lutas e ações encampadas por Haydée confirmamsua atuação para a valorização e construção da identidade profissional na enfermagem brasileira.
Objective: describe the life trajectory of Haydée Guanais Dourado, to reaffirm her place in the nursing history ofBahia and her contribution to the memory of Brazilian nursing. Method: this is a descriptive study, of a historicaland social nature, based on oral testimony and textual documents belonging to the Memory Center of the Schoolof Nursing, Universidade Federal da Bahia, books and articles reflecting the life story Haydée Guanais Dourado.Results: the recovery of the background of Haydée permitted the identification of contours of her life and professionalcareer and of her contributions to Brazilian nursing. Highlight: her struggle towards the implementation of the firstNursing School in the north-northeast of Brazil, her mobilization for surveying the nursing needs in Brazil andthe development of a professional legislation. Conclusion: the struggles and actions adopted by Haydée confirm herperformance towards the valorization and construction of a professional identity in Brazilian nursing care.
