This study aimed to examine the association between occupational burnout and psychological symptoms among Chinese medical staff, assuming social support to play a moderating role in the aforementioned relationship. The survey was conducted online from May 1 to June 28, 2022, and the questionnaires were distributed and retrieved through a web-based platform. The final sample was comprised of 1461 Chinese medical staff in this cross-sectional study. Several multiple linear regressions were performed to analyze the data. After controlling for potential confounding factors, all three dimensions of occupational burnout were associated with poorer psychological symptoms. Emotional exhaustion (ß = 0.33; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.018, 1.479) had the strongest association with psychological symptoms, followed by depersonalization and diminished personal accomplishment. Moreover, medical staff with higher levels of friend support (ß = -0.11; 95% CI, -4.063, -0.573) and significant other support (ß = -0.10; 95% CI, -3.965, -0.168) were less likely to suffer from psychological symptoms when faced with occupational burnout. The results suggested that interventions aimed at lessening occupational burnout and boosting social support can be an effective way to promote the psychological health of medical staff.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore help-seeking preference categories and crucial influencing factors among community nurses exposed to COVID-19 in China using a new person-centered approach. DESIGN: A cross-sectional design including an online self-reported questionnaire survey was used. METHODS: A total of 667 nurses who participated in COVID-19 prevention and control work were recruited. Latent class analysis and logistic regression were used to analyze the data using Mplus and SPSS. FINDINGS: Two latent classes of help-seeking preferences were identified: high help-seeking preferences (33.58%) and low help-seeking preferences (66.42%). Most sampled nurses had relatively low help-seeking preferences when facing psychological threats during COVID-19. Logistic regression showed that career duration, perceived social support, online help-seeking intention, and social media exposure negatively affected low help-seeking preferences. CONCLUSIONS: Career duration, perceived social support, online help-seeking intention, and social media exposure could be key factors influencing help-seeking preferences among Chinese nurses exposed to public emergencies. It is necessary to implement relevant intervention measures, such as focusing on nurses whose career durations are shorter, improving nurses' perceived social support, strengthening positive media publicity, and developing comprehensive online mental health services that promote nurses' help-seeking preferences and behaviors to reduce mental illness during public health emergencies. CLINICAL EVIDENCE: Help-seeking preferences are relatively low among Chinese nurses during public emergencies. Based on the major influencing factors of help-seeking preferences, including social support and social media exposure, more interventions must be developed for prompting psychological help-seeking intentions among Chinese nurses.

This scoping review explored the occupations of terminally ill Chinese adults and their caregivers. Seven databases were searched for peer-reviewed journal articles published in English or Chinese before June 2020. Of the 16 studies that met the selection criteria, only one directly used the term "occupations" while the other 15 studies contained descriptions of occupations. Eight themes were extracted and compared with existing literature. The top two reported themes were occupations surrounding life roles and tasks and those surrounding food and eating. More study is required about the occupational engagement of this client group.

BACKGROUND: The "gatekeepers" for residents' health are their family doctors. The implementation of contracted services provided by family doctors is conducive to promoting hierarchical diagnosis and treatment and achieving the objective of providing residents comprehensive and full-cycle health services. Since its implementation in 2016, the contract service system for Chinese family doctors has yielded a number of results while also highlighting a number of issues that require further investigation. Consequently, the purpose of this study is to assess the impact of family doctors' contracted services in a Chinese city from the perspective of demanders (i.e., contracted residents), identify the weak links, and then propose optimization strategies. METHODS: In this study, a city in Shandong Province, China was selected as the sample city. In January 2020, 1098 contracted residents (including 40.5% men and 59.5% women) from 18 primary medical institutions (including township health centers and community health centers) were selected for on-site investigation. Take the PCAT-AS(Adult Short) scale revised in Chinese as the research tool to understand the medical experience of contracted residents in primary medical institutions, and interview some family doctors and residents to obtain more in-depth information. RESULTS: Among the four core dimensions of PCAT-AS, the score of Continuous was the highest (3.44 ± 0.58); The score of Coordinated was the lowest (3.08 ± 0.66); Among the three derived dimensions, the score of Family-centeredness was the highest (3.33 ± 0.65); The score of Culturally-competent was the lowest (2.93 ± 0.77). The types of contracting institutions, residents' age, marital status, occupation, and whether chronic diseases are confirmed are the influencing factors of PCAT scores. CONCLUSION: The family doctors' contracted services in the city has achieved certain results. At the same time, there are still some problems, such as difficult access to outpatient services during non-working hours, incomplete service items, an imperfect referral system, and inadequate utilization of traditional Chinese medicine services, it is recommended that the government continue to enhance and increase its investment in relevant policies and funds. Primary medical institutions should improve the compensation mechanism for family doctors and increase their work enthusiasm, improve and effectively implement the two-way referral system, gradually form an orderly hierarchical pattern of medical treatment, provide diversified health services in accordance with their own service capacity and the actual needs of residents, and improve the utilization rate of traditional Chinese medicine services in primary medical institutions.

Nurses are at increased risk for developing depressive symptoms. While previous research has suggested that strength use may be inversely related to these symptoms, the longitudinal impact of strength use on nurses' depressive symptoms remains under-explored. This study sought to examine the longitudinal relationship between strength use and depressive symptoms among Chinese nurses. Using a two-wave cross-lagged design from 2020 to 2023, 321 nurses participated in an online questionnaire survey. Using structural equation modeling, our results supported the hypothesized reciprocal model, indicating that strength use can significantly predict a reduction in depressive symptoms and vice versa. Given these findings, there's an urgent need for nurse leaders to emphasize the importance of using nurses' strengths as a strategy to alleviate depressive symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence is limited on preferences of Japanese patients and physicians in treatment for epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-mutant non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Several oral or intravenous novel agents for EGFR exon 20 insertions are under development. The aim of our study was to investigate which attributes of novel treatments influenced selection of oral or intravenous agents among treated patients and treating physicians in Japan. METHODS: The study was designed by board-certified oncologists, patient representatives, and analytics specialists. Eligible participants completed an online survey with a discrete choice experiment presenting two treatment profiles described by attributes: mode of administration (oral or intravenous); frequency of administration; overall response rate (ORR); average progression-free survival (PFS); chance of experiencing severe side effects (SEs); mild-moderate gastrointestinal SEs; mild-moderate skin-related SEs; and patient out-of-pocket costs. RESULTS: Fifty-four patients (all self-reported EGFR-mutant) and 74 physicians participated from December 2021 to August 2022. All attributes being equal, there was greater preference for oral administration. However, there was greater preference for intravenous over oral, when ORR and PFS improved by 10% and 1 month, and severe SEs reduced by 10%. Physicians exhibited greater preference for PFS compared to patients (p < 0.01). Ranked order of attribute importance was as follows: (1) PFS; (2) ORR; (3) severe SEs, expressed by patients and physicians alike. CONCLUSIONS: Our study revealed Japanese physician and patient preferences in treatment options for EGFR-mutant NSCLC. Compared to the strong preference for a more efficacious drug, the preference of oral versus intravenous revealed a smaller impact.

Supportive measures for employees raising children may have increased workloads on other nurses, causing psychological stress. This study aimed to clarify the differences in working conditions and psychological status among female Japanese nurses based on child-rearing attributes. We used data from 1,600 female nurses at 10 Japanese hospitals collected by the study of the Work Environment for Hospital Nurses in Japan conducted in 2016. The variables included work conditions (number of night shifts per month, daily overtime, number of paid holidays per year, and social support received), psychological status (sense of coherence, emotional exhaustion, and work engagement), and sociodemographic characteristics. An analysis of covariance was performed on the differences between the three groups (without children, with preschool-age children, and with children of other ages groups). The group without children had a relatively higher workload (p<0.01) and lower social support (p<0.01 and p<0.05). Additionally, they had higher emotional exhaustion and lower work engagement (p<0.01). This study confirmed the uneven distribution of work environment by work-life balance measures.

BACKGROUND: Despite international recognition of the impact of general practice / family medicine training on postgraduate training outcomes, there have been few reports from Japan. METHODS: Junior residents who participated in community medicine training for one month between 2019 and 2022 were enrolled in the study. The settings were five medical institutions (one hospital and four clinics) that had full-time family doctors. The junior residents were assigned to one of these institutions. The training content mainly consisted of general ambulatory care, home medical care, community-based care, and reflection. The junior residents evaluated themselves at the beginning and end of their training, and the family doctors evaluated the junior residents at the end. The evaluation items were 36 items in 10 areas, based on the objectives outlined in the Guidelines for Residency Training - 2020 Edition, and were rated on a 10-point Likert scale. In the statistical analysis, Wilcoxon signed rank test of two related groups was performed to analyze changes between pre and post self-evaluation, and the effect size r was calculated. RESULTS: Ninety-one junior residents completed the study. Their self-evaluations showed statistically significant increases in all 36 items. The effect size was large in 33 items. The family doctors' evaluation was 8-9 points for all 36 items. CONCLUSION: General practice / family medicine training may greatly contribute to the acquisition of various required clinical abilities in postgraduate training even in Japan.
