Abstract The antioxidant activity of Tetragonisca angustula honey (TAH) and its ethanolic extract (TAEE) were investigated. The total levels of phenolic (TPC) and flavonoids (TFC) were also evaluated. The results for TPC were 19.91 ± 0.38 and 29.37 ± 1.82 mg GAE g-1 and for TFC 0.20 ± 0.02 and 0.14 ± 0.01 mg QE g-1 of TAH and TAEE, respectively. Antioxidant activities were 73.29 ± 0.49% and 93.36 ± 0.27% in the DPPH● assay and 71.73 ± 4.07% and 97.86 ± 0.35% in ABTS●+ for TAH and TAEE, respectively. The total reducing activity was determined by the method of reducing power (PR) and iron ion (Fe III) and the results varied in PR from 151.7 ± 25.7 and 230.7 ± 25.2 mg GAE L-1, for TAH and TAEE respectively and for (Fe III) in EC50 0.284 in TAEE and 0.687 in TAH. Chemical analysis by HPLC-DAD of the ethanolic extract (TAEE) revealed the presence of ferulic acid as majority phenolic component in the extract. The 1H NMR analysis confirmed this structure and showed the also presence of glucose, citric acid, succinic acid, proline and hydrocarbon derivatives. In addition, the botanical origin was also investigated and showed a multifloral characteristic, having found 19 pollen types with a botanical predominance of the Anacardiaceae family, with Tapirira pollen occurring as predominant (42.6%) and Schinus as secondary (25.7%). The results showed that T. angustula honey is an interesting source of antioxidant phenolic compounds due to its floral origin and can act as a protector of human health when consumed.

ABSTRACT The oak forests in Colombia are dominated by the species Quercus humboldtii Bonpl. which is in the vulnerable category due to deforestation to generate crops, livestock areas and plantations of exotic species, causing the formation of edges due to the deterioration of the ecosystem. These forests establish symbiotic associations with species of ectomycorrhizal fungi, allowing the exchange of nutrients and water between fungal hyphae and plant roots. This study analyzes the edge effect in the interior (BNI-C) and at the edge of an undisturbed oak forest (BNI-B), in addition to two forest edges with anthropogenic intervention, one in contact with a plantation of Eucalyptus sp. (BE) and another with cattle ranching (BG). The forest edge was established by measuring environmental variables (ambient temperature, luminosity, temperature, and soil humidity). Oak roots were collected from seven trees at the interior and edge of each forest and the quantification of colonization and morphological characterization of ectomycorrhizae was made. The edge effect was evidenced in the degree of ectomycorrhizal colonization in the roots of Q. humboldtii with percentages of 18 to 30 % in BNI, 15 % in BE and 47 % in BG. The ectomycorrhizal genera Cenococcum sp. and Lactarius sp. showed the highest abundance in the three forests, varying considerably near the edges in BG and BE. Changes in the percentage of colonization and morphotype diversity of ectomycorrhizae were evidenced at the forest edge in contact with the two disturbed areas.

ABSTRACT The foundation of the Universidad Nacional de los Estados Unidos de Colombia in 1867 took place almost a decade after the publication of Darwin's Origin of Species (1859) and Virchow's Die Cellularpathologie (1859). The first of these works presents the theory of evolution by natural selection, the second the cell theory, both of which underpin modern biology. The analysis of primary and secondary historical sources led us to determine that cell theory was taught in the School of Natural Sciences between 1868 and 1875. The botany course of Francisco Bayón (1868) explained the cell theory, including the proposals of Schleiden, Mirbel, Mohl and Unger; as well as the processes of pollination and fertilization in plants. Some topics were outdated, mainly by the fact that Bayón's main sources were texts edited in Spain and France, and by the absence of translations of the pioneering works that emerged in Germany. The School of Natural Sciences took a step further from natural history to modern biology by including the cell theory in their courses.

Abstract This article examines the circulation of knowledge about Cinchona plants. The former's observations were better, but his contributions were silenced by Humboldt and other actors such as José Celestino Mutis. Caldas changed from a passive position of accepted subordination to one of self-advocacy, but his arguments were not widely publicized, in part because his results did not favor commercial interests and he lacked connections. Caldas used similar techniques to Humboldt to appropriate and systematize knowledge about cinchonas, silencing various sources.

The procedures of several scientific disciplines are changing with the spreading of new information and communication technologies, even the most traditional, like botanical taxonomy. Here we document the review and validation, by collaborative efforts, on the first version of the taxonomic key for the identification of the fern genera in Guatemala. An upgraded version was composed which is easier to follow and more precise. It is intended to be accessible for a wide range of interested people, more than just the fern specialists. Along with this paper, electronic supplementary documents are published too, including the most recent version of the key, an annotated list of taxonomic categories of ferns of Guatemala in the supra-specific levels, and some lists of taxonomic synonymy of the currently valid names, with reference to the old names used in Flora Mesoamericana. With this experience a new milestone has been reached by the national taxonomy, getting over the old paradigm in which taxonomy was an exclusive practice, endeavored by few authorities, to become a more inclusive discipline, embracing the development and revision of its instruments. In the future, we hope to maintain updated all these documents in a more dynamic way, applying new technologies to the taxonomic botany practices.

The biotechnological interest in genus Physalis has increased in the last decades, however, there are still few micropropagation studies of this genus. The objective of this study was to evaluate P. angulata photoautotrophic and photomixotrophic micropropagation with gas exchange under seven light spectra and five concentrations of sucrose. Lighting were yellow, blue, white, red, green, red + blue LEDs and natural light filtered by mesh. Sucrose concentrations were 0, 7.5, 15, 22.5 and 30 g.L-1. Phytotechnical, anatomical features and photopigment contents were evaluated through stem and root segment length, leaf number, leaf area, chlorophyll a and b contents, carotenoids, adaxial epidermis, palisadic and spongy parenchyma and abaxial epidermis. The data were compared by Scott-Knott's mean test and principal components analysis using the R software. Comparing the variables within lighting types, it was observed that only the screen treatment, screen-filtered natural illumination, obtained assessment in all variables. Comparing the levels of sucrose, it was observed that the treatment 15 g.L-1 sucrose obtained the highest number of averages with maximum evaluation. It was concluded that the natural light filtered by screen with 50% of shading allowed the photoautotrophic micropropagation of P. angulata. Better development results were observed in photomixotrophic micropropagation with 15 g.L-1 of sucrose.

The genus Justicia L. can be considered the largest genus of Acanthaceae, with about 600 species. In the Justicia genus, the presence of lignans, flavonoids, terpenoids and alkaloids are reported, which are of great importance in pharmacology. The objective of this study was to observe and record the main classes of secondary metabolites of the leaf structures of the species Justicia nodicaulis (Nees) Leonard, occurring in the area of Environmental Preservation at the University Center of Anápolis - GO. Portions of young leaves (proportion of smaller size) and adults (larger size ratio) were collected, preferably being extracted descendingly from the third node, identified just below the end of the specimen, samples were collected from 10 specimens of J. nodicaulis (Nees ) Leonard along the creek of the experimental area of the University Center of Anápolis. Materials that were purchased for the purpose of performing the phytochemical prospecting and survey of the essential oils. For the qualitative analysis of the classes of secondary metabolites most present in the species, we used methodologies described in the literature of the science of phytochemistry. Among the results, new and adult leaves, coumarins, tannins, anthraquinone heterosides, flavonoids, cardioactive and saponin were obtained. Between the survey of the essential oils, 49 members were obtained more occurring in the analyzed literature.

he appropriation of American native people's botanical knowledge by Hispanic imperial scien-ce is a widely known and studied phenomenon, especially as concerns the use and consumption of medicinal plants. The Compañía de Jesús played a prominent role: the Jesuits spread this knowledge to different provinces within the Empire and outside of Europe. Less studied is the way in which the same knowledge was transmitted amongst other indigenous peoples and sub-altern sectors across Spanish America, as occurred, for instance, with Juan de Esteyneffer's Flori-legio Medicinal, influential amongst the popular classes in New Spain. We can situate in this same tradition the example of the medical aid the Chilean colonial authorities provided to the Mapuche people during a smallpox epidemic in 1791, which succes-sively affected populations at both sides of the frontier. In this instance, the Spaniards advised natives about the traditional use of medicinal herbs, from knowledge appropriated during the 17th century that the Jesuit missionaries had learned from the Indians themselves. The Spanish contribution shows the return of practices that had their origin from the people and territory of Araucanía, but that circulated through and were influenced by popular hispano-criollo sectors. This case, reconstructed through different documental and bibliographic sources, illustrates the circulation of medical knowledge through ethnic and social frontiers, moved by the common search of curative efficacy and the exploitation of local botanic resources.
