Abstract This article aims to analyze the clarity and engagement measures of publications on oral cancer in the Instagram profiles of official health agencies in Brazil. An infodemiological study was conducted with 81 profiles. Data collected concerned content classification, account and media, manner of addressing the topic, number of posts, likes, comments, views and hashtags. The clarity of the educational publications was assessed with the Brazilian version of the Clear Communication Index (BR-CDC-CCI). Data analysis involved Spearman's correlation and the Mann-Whitney test (α = 5%). A total of 775 publications on oral cancer were found. The average BR-CDC-CCI score was 69.8 (SD = 15.5). The clarity of the information was adequate in 9.5% of the educational publications. Positive correlations were found between the number of likes and engagement (comments [r = 0.49], views [r = 0.96]), number of hashtags (r = 0.13) and year of publication (r = 0.21). Publications from the Health Ministry had a significantly higher BR-CDC-CCI score compared to the other profiles. Publications on oral cancer were correlated with engagement, year of publication and number of hashtags. Public agencies increased publications to reach the population, but the clarity of the content was low.

Introduction: premalignant and malignant lesions of de oral area increase in the population which demands a correct implementation of the Early Detection of Oral Cancer Program. In this work transformations are exposed knowledge level of both patients and dentists regarding lesions concerning the Early Detection of Oral Cancer Program (EDOCP). Method: educational intervention was carried out in Julio Antonio Mella health area of Camaguey municipality from May 2022 to June 2023 which 36 patients and 30 Deontologists. Information sources were the Clinical History, a questionnaire and a test applied to patients and Deontologists respectively, before and after the intervention, to confirm the transformations in the sample. Results: Prior to intervention patients were poorly informed about consequences of toxic, hygienic and dietetic habits combined with lack of knowledge regarding importance of a correct oral self-examination whose knowledge improved to reach a high level in most of them after the intervention. Deontologists improved their knowledge on diagnosis and follow-up of premalignant and malignant lesions affecting the maxillofacial complex. Discussion: correct application of the EDOCP depends on both patients and deontologists, however reserchers focus on the former due to the reported benefits; the postgraduate training is a way to systematize knowledge and strengthen professional competences with positive impact on EDOCP. BACKGROUND:Cerium(Ce)is the most abundant element among lanthanides, which is mostly in the form of ceria. The reversible transformation between Ce3+and Ce4+ ions contributes to the high redox activity of cerium.Because of its antibacterial,anti-inflammatory,osteogenic,angiogenic and anti-tumor properties, cerium has been widely used in stomatology. OBJECTIVE:To summarize the antibacterial,anti-inflammatory,osteogenic,angiogenic and anti-tumor mechanism of cerium, and to review the research status and application prospects of cerium and cerium-based materials in the modification of oral materials and the diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases in recent years. METHODS:The articles published from database inception to 2023 were retrieved from Web of Science,PubMed,CNKI and WanFang databases with the search terms"cerium, ceria, prosthodontics, prosthesis, restorative dentistry, denture, dental implant, caries, endodontics, pulpitis, periodontitis, periodontal diseases, oral cancer"in English and"cerium, ceria, prosthodontics, implant, dental caries, dental pulp, periodontitis, periodontal disease, oral cancer"in Chinese.By analyzing and reading literature for screening, according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria,73 articles were finally included in this review. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:(1)Cerium exerts an antibacterial effect through direct contact with bacteria, oxidative stress and destroying bacterial biofilm, and exerts an anti-inflammatory function based on mimetic enzyme activity. The osteogenic and angiogenic activities of cerium involve a series of signaling pathways including ERK and Wnt signaling pathways.(2)Antibacterial,anti-inflammatory,osteogenic,and angiogenic activities allow cerium significant potential in the treatment of oral infectious diseases and regeneration of oral soft and hard tissues. However, there is still a certain gap in the application of cerium's anti-tumor properties in the oral field.(3)Due to excellent mechanical properties and a low light-transmitting property,ceria-stabilized zirconia as a dental ceramic material can be used for core ceramics, the frameworks of dental prostheses and dental implants.(4)Benefited from its biological properties,cerium-based materials have the ability to promote osseointegration and soft tissue integration, inhibit demineralization and cariogenic bacteria, facilitate regeneration of the dentin-pulp complex, lessen inflammatory response and enhance periodontal tissue regeneration. There are wide applications of cerium in surface modifications of implants and treatments of caries, pulpitis, periodontitis and oral cancers.(5)Cerium shows certain toxicity under conditions of high concentration and long-term administration. To further expand clinical applications of cerium in dentistry, biosafety and optimization of cerium-based materials need to be further explored in the future.

Objective @#To investigate the effects of DNA demethylation drugs combined with histone deacetylase inhibitors on fragile X mental retardation 1 neighbor protein (FMR1NB) expression and its promoter methylation in human oral cancer cells and try to find a strategy of weakening the heterogeneity of FMR1NB expression .@*Methods@#Human oral cancer cell lines C al27 and SCC⁃9 were treated with decitabine (DAC) , an inhibitor of DNA methyltransferase , combined with trichostatin A ( TSA) and valproic acid ( VPA) , inhibitors of histone deacetylase . Then reverse transcription⁃polymerase chain reaction ( RT⁃PCR) , quantitative real ⁃time PCR ( qRT⁃PCR) and Western blot were used to detect the expression of FMR1NB and pyrosequencing was used to detect the methylation of FMR1NB promoter. @*Results @#Compared with the blank control group , DAC and its combination with TSA and VPA significantly induced the expression of FMR1NB mRNA and protein in C al27 and SCC⁃9 cells . Compared with DAC alone group , FMR1NB mRNA expression of each DAC⁃combined drug groups significantly increased , but FMR1NB protein did not significantly change in C al27 cells; for SCC⁃9 cells , except for DAC + TSA group , the mRNA and protein levels of FMR1NB significantly increased in all other groups . In addition , there was no significant difference in the expression of FMR1NB mRNA and protein between the three⁃combined drugs group and two-combined drugs groups . Further methylation assay showed that the methylation level of the overall FMR1NB promoter and its each CpG site measured were reduced to varying degrees in all treatment groups except for three⁃combination drug group of SCC⁃9 .@*Conclusion @#DAC and its combination with TSA and VPA can enhance the expression of FMR1NB by mediating the demethylation of FMR1NB promoter , wherein the enhanced expression effect of the combination of the two drugs is stronger , suggesting that they have the potential to weaken the heterogeneity of FMR1NB expression and improve the immunotherapy effect of oral cancer.

Abstract Objectives This review highlights the existence and association of Acinetobacter baumannii with the oro-dental diseases, transforming this systemic pathogen into an oral pathogen. The review also hypothesizes possible reasons for the categorization of this pathogen as code blue due to its stealthy entry into the oral cavity. Methodology Study data were retrieved from various search engines reporting specifically on the association of A. baumannii in dental diseases and tray set-ups. Articles were also examined regarding obtained outcomes on A. baumannii biofilm formation, iron acquisitions, magnitude of antimicrobial resistance, and its role in the oral cancers. Results A. baumannii is associated with the oro-dental diseases and various virulence factors attribute for the establishment and progression of oro-mucosal infections. Its presence in the oral cavity is frequent in oral microbiomes, conditions of impaired host immunity, age related illnesses, and hospitalized individuals. Many sources also contribute for its prevalence in the dental health care environment and the presence of drug resistant traits is also observed. Its association with oral cancers and oral squamous cell carcinoma is also evident. Conclusions The review calls for awareness on the emergence of A. baumannii in dental clinics and for the need for educational programs to monitor and control the sudden outbreaks of such virulent and resistant traits in the dental health care settings.

Carcinoma cuniculatum (CC), is a rare well-differentiated, low-grade variant of squamous cell carcinoma. However, diagnosis of oral CC has remained very difficult, because many pathologists and clinicians remain un acquainted with oral CC, because there are very few reported cases of this disease in the oral cavity. To our knowledge, no more than 60 head and neck cases have been reported since Flieger and Owinski first described a case involving the mandible in 1977, because there are very few published cases of this disease in the oral cavity, the aim of this report is to provide a detailed clinical and histopathologic description of carcinoma cuniculatum of the maxila, provide a brief review of the literature, and highlight the difficulties in arriving at the correct diagnosis.

Current research highlighted the importance to recognize feasible biomarkers for early diagnoses and treatment in oral cancer. Our study analyzed the expression and spatial distribution of ALDH1A1, FGFR2, caspase-3, and CD44 in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) and leukoplakia with and without oral mucosal dysplasia. Paraffin-embedded samples of OSCC (n=5), leukoplakia with (n=5) and without (n=5) dysplasia obtained by incisional biopsies were processed using conventional histochemical techniques. Immunohistochemistry was performed using antibodies against ALDH1A1, FGFR2, caspase-3, and CD44. Images of the immunohistochemically stained tissue sections were analyzed according to the intensity of the immunostaining of each marker and classified in Scores. The Kruskal- Wallis test was performed (p≤0.05). Our results demonstrated a statically difference in the expression of all immunomarkers between OSCC and leukoplakia without dysplasia, being more significant in FGFR2 and ALDH1A1. Within the limitations of this study, our data showed that all biomarkers were overexpressed in OSCC and leukoplakia with oral mucosa dysplasia, suggesting that the presence of dysplasia is a significant clinic-pathologic predictor for malignant transformation.

Background: Tobacco is a major risk factor associaetd with developing oral factor. Recent studies have shown that the age of onset, especially in Asia, is reducing. This study was to determine if tobacco exposure correlated with prognosis in oral squamous cell carcinoms (OSCC) based on age at diagnosis. Methods: Six hundred and forty three patients of OSCC treated in our institution were divided into four groups, younger patients (?45 years) with or without tobacco exposure and older patients (>45 years) with or without tobacco exposure, and compared with respect to prognostically relevant variables, disease?free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS). Survival analysis was performed. Results: The percentage of those with tobacco exposure was comparable in both age groups. Tobacco correlated with known pathological determinants in OSCC; however, perineural invasion, lymphovascular invasion, and extranodal extension were significantly more common in the young. On survival analysis, tobacco exposure impacted OS (P = 0.04) and DFS (P = 0.03) in patients ?45 years, and not in older patients >45 years. On multivariate analysis, tobacco exposure in the young was significantly associated with recurrence (P = 0.03, hazard ratio (HR) 1.77, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.0794) but not survival. Conclusion: Younger patients with a history of tobacco use have a significantly higher risk of recurrence and mortality due to OSCC, but this difference could not be attributed to any of the known prognostic determinants in OSCC. Younger patients also had more adverse pathological features. Whether this occurs because of altered disease biology or pathways of carcinogenesis in the young wi

Background-Oxidative stress in biological systems is a complex process that is characterized by an inequity between the production of free radicals (FR) and the ability of the body to eliminate these reactive species through the use of endogenous and exogenous antioxidants. The pathogenesis of oral cancer has been linked to alterations in the antioxidant defense mechanism. Materials & Methods- Saliva from twenty patients with OSCC, forty patients with OPMDs and twenty healthy subjects in the age group of thirty five to seventy five years was analyzed for levels of nitric oxide, vitamin C, total sialic acid and GSH using spectrophotometry. Results - The levels of salivary vitamin C and glutathione were significantly reduced and those of nitric oxide and sialic acid were raised in patients having OPMD's and oral squamous cell carcinoma. The co- relation between the AOI and calculated ratios indicated that antioxidant potential of the saliva was decreased and was statistically related to (p <0.001) development of OPMD, which further may progress to oral cancer, notably OSCC. Conclusion- The current study demonstrated that the estimation of vitamin C, nitric oxide, sialic acid and GSH in saliva could be used as an early potential diagnostic biomarker in the screening of oral cancer. The antioxidant-oxidant indices (AOI's) can be used as a reliable tool for predicting the oral microenvironment and its predicted change towards development of oral cancer. This optimized developed protocol was also found to be simple and cost effective.

Artificial intelligence (AI), has a lot of potential for aiding in diagnosis with the advancement of information technology. For this purpose, few machine learning algorithms have been created to date. Given their capacity to evaluate complicated data in a quantitative and standardised manner to further improve the precision and scope of diagnoses, artificial intelligence (AI) or machine learning technologies hold great promise for the field of pathology. Conclusion: The application of Artificial Intelligence tools in pathology has sharply increased in this era and it is anticipated to revolutionize the pathology field in the years ahead and can change the way the field of pathology is managed and make them not only more systematic but also effective in meeting the needs of the current age of precision medicine.

Background: Oral cancer is one of the sixth most common cancers in the world. Oral exfoliative cytology is one of the popular screening tool for oral cancer. Use of tobacco in any form are documented as the most common cause as initiators for dysplastic changes in oral mucosa. The purpose of the study was to detect the cytological changes in buccal mucosa, tongue and palate among non-smokers & smokers. Material & Methods: Smears sample were collected according to site (buccal mucosa, tongue & palate) from 100 subjects among smokers & non-smokers. Smears were then stained using Papanicolaou staining technique. Results: Among the smokers and non-smokers the results were statistically significant. Conclusion: Recent advances in the clinical visualization and detection of the oral mucosa have made the viability of cytological procedures more specific and sensitive. Contact endoscopy and use of autofluorescence devices are the forerunners in this group. The fluorescence characteristics of tissues depend upon their biochemical composition and histomorphological architecture, both of which undergo a change during malignant transformation. These changes are detectable as an alteration in the fluorescence spectral profile of the tissues21. Due to low feasibilities of such devices the benchmark of diagnosis will be microscopic tissue examination. Hence cytological smears will always be highly specific, sensitive, easy to use and reproducible procedures in routine screening of population for potentially and malignant conditions of the oral cavity.

Abstract Introduction Free flaps have been the preferred method for reconstruction after resection of oral cavity cancer. However, pedicled flaps remain valuable alternatives in appropriate settings. Objective The main objective of the present study was to compare surgical complications, hospital costs, and functional outcomes of oral cavity cancer patients who underwent soft tissue reconstruction with pedicled flaps or free flaps. Methods A total of 171 patients were included in the study. Ninety-eight underwent reconstruction with a pectoralis major, submental, temporalis, or supraclavicular pedicled flap, and in 73 patients, a radial forearm or anterolateral thigh free flap had been used. The cases were retrospectively reviewed, and a comparative analysis was carried out between the two groups. Results Recipient site and flap complications, speech, and swallowing functions did not differ between groups, but donor site complications, operative time, hospital stay, and costs were significantly reduced in the pedicled flap group compared with the free flap group. However, the pectoralis major flap reconstruction resulted in a more inferior swallowing function than the free flap reconstruction. Conclusions With comparable complications and functional outcomes, while decreasing in costs, pedicled flaps are a useful alternative to free flaps in oral cavity cancer reconstruction. However, in an extensive defect (> 70 cm2), free flaps are the reconstruction of choice for the preservation of swallowing function.

@#Oral cancer has a high degree of malignancy, easily recurs, readily metastasizes and poor progonsis. Autophagy is a catabolic process induced in cells under stressful conditions. In recent years, studies have found that the activation of autophagy in epithelial cells can inhibit carcinogenesis and activate pathways such as mTOR and MAPK to activate autophagy in oral cancer cells and inhibit their survival. Inducing autophagy can degrade eukaryotic initiation factor 4E protein and inhibit oral cancer metastasis. Inducing autophagy in oral cancer cells can inhibit their proliferation and promote their apoptosis. Adding autophagy inducers to the treatment can help improve its efficacy and patient survival compared with chemoradiotherapy alone. In addition, the induction of autophagy in oral cancer cells can improve the body's immune function and enhance the efficacy of oral cancer immunotherapy. This article summarizes the relationship between autophagy and oral cancer and the role of induced autophagy in the treatment of oral cancer with the combined application of chemoradiotherapy and immunotherapy. The goal is to provide new ideas for inducing autophagy during the treatment of oral cancer, improving the therapeutic effect of oral cancer and the survival rate of patients. At present, the mechanism of action of induced autophagy in the treatment of oral cancer is not clear. Future research should study its mechanism of action, improve its therapeutic effect on oral cancer and develop autophagy inducers to accurately regulate and induce autophagy during the treatment of oral cancer.

@#Ferroptosis is a newly discovered method of programmed cell death. Current studies have shown that activation of ferroptosis-related pathways can inhibit the growth and proliferation of tumor cells and reverse their drug resistance. Oral cancer is a common malignant tumor with a high recurrence rate and high drug resistance. Inducing ferroptosis is a potential treatment strategy. There are still many uncertainties in the application of ferroptosis in the treatment of oral cancer, which need to be further explored. This article systematically introduces the mechanism of ferroptosis and its recent progress in oral cancer treatment to provide new mechanisms and methods for the clinical treatment of oral cancer. Current research shows that the mechanism of ferroptosis is mainly related to amino acid metabolism, Fe2+ metabolism, and lipid metabolism. Ferroptosis in oral cancer cells can reverse drug resistance in cancer cells and improve the activity of immune cells. New drugs, such as curcumin analogs and triptolide, can induce ferroptosis in oral cancer, and the development of nanomaterials has improved the utilization rate of drugs. Inhibiting the expression of the ferroptosis-related factors SLC7A11, NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), and ferritin heavy chain 1 (FTH1) can promote ferroptosis in oral cancer cells. It is a potential target for the clinical treatment of oral cancer, but its translation into clinical practice still needs further research.
