By exploring the core ideas of the "Xingnao Kaiqiao" theory, analyzing the relationship between the "Xingnao Kaiqiao" theory and the TCM encephalopathy, and exploring the necessity of acupuncture for the treatment of TCM encephalopathy, in order to clarify how to diagnose and treat brain diseases in acupuncture and moxibustion. The "Xingnao Kaiqiao" is the core of the theory of the "Tiaoshen", the acupuncture of "Xingnao Kaiqiao" was based on the principle of "Xingnao","Xingshen" and "Tiaoshen", the idea of the "Tiaoshen" was inseparable from the diagnosis and treatment of the TCM encephalopathy. Based on the special features of acupuncture therapy and complexity and particularity of TCM encephalopathy, acupuncture and moxibustion treatment of encephalopathy was supposed to have their own unique system of syndrome differentiation and treatment. During the practice of acupuncture, the diagnosis and treatment of TCM encephalopathy should be based on "brain", "Xingnao Tiaoshen" as a general rule, adding and subtracting from the main points of the "Xingnao Kaiqiao", and the different brain diseases are matched with appropriate treatments.

The application status of acupuncture and moxibustion therapy for assisted reproductive field in the United States was analyzed, and the existing problems and future development directions were discussed. According to the survey on the 456 websites of assisted reproductive clinic in the United States mentioned in the report of U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 111 clinics among 456 assisted reproductive clinics recommend and used acupuncture and moxibustion therapy, accounting for 24.3%. Acupuncture and moxibustion therapy had obvious effect, good safety and low cost, and the assisted reproductive institutions in the United States had a high degree of application and recognition to acupuncture and moxibustion therapy. However, some problems, such as immature treatment scheme, unclear mechanism and imperfect insurance policies, still existed. In the future, the advantages of Chinese traditional acupuncture and moxibustion should combine with international modern assisted reproductive technology, and multi-center and large-sample clinical randomized controlled trials and basic experimental research on the mechanism of acupuncture and moxibustion for assisted reproduction should be carried out.

The number of acupuncturists and moxibustion therapists has rapidly increased since around 2000. If they can be regarded as new healthcare resource investments, it is of great significance to evaluate their social impact. Here, we conducted a regional correlation study in different prefectures by using the extension of average life expectancy as an evaluation index. The results revealed an increase in “acupuncturists (human healthcare resources)” and in “facilities for performing acupuncture and moxibustion therapy (physical healthcare resources)” to show a weak but statistically significant positive correlation with the extension of average life expectancy for elderly men. Due to methodological limitations, however, this study cannot confirm a causal relationship between them. The author strongly hopes that public service corporations involved in the provision of acupuncture and moxibustion will henceforth serve as a bridge to allow researchers, acupuncturists, and moxibustion therapists to collaborate and conduct multicenter joint studies, in order to create an even greater social impact of acupuncture and moxibustion.

, born in the SouthernDynasty, was proficient in TCM theory and enjoyed summarizing proved prescriptions. During his spare time, he wrotewith scientific writing structure, wide quote of references and attached medical reports, which modified and enriched the content of acupoint therapy. This book played an important role as a link between past and future; it included a considerable number of moxibustion methods and was considered as the greatest medical achievement beforeDynasty. In addition, this book contained the greatest number of proved prescriptions among the ancient acupuncture books, so its academic value was self-evident. However, when examining and correcting the acupoints, ignored the fact that acupuncture physicians had different clinical experience and their understanding on the body structure was discrepant, so the contradictions of location and indications of acupoints appeared in the book.

is a profound book byfor acupuncture-moxibustion development. Twenty-five articles about arranging the book were analyzed in China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI) from 1980 to 2015. It is considered that the versions spread are clear, and literature quoted is abundant but needed to be further sorted. Also, academic thoughts with value were deeply explored in terms of acupoint, moxibustion, acupuncture-moxibustion case, contraindication and health preserving. However, shortages about contemporary research exist, such as less exploration on historical cultural background of the book, the humanistic spirit of, the rule of acupoint application and the treatment experie-nce. We should pay attention to the above points so as to further systematically study its academic thought.

[Objective]In this study, we examined the relationship between public subsidies for acupuncture and moxibustion therapy, which are established independently by municipalities that serve as agents for National Health Insurance, and group health level indices such as life expectancy and health care costs that are incurred due to the treatment of illnesses.
[Methods]Eighty-five municipalities in Fukuoka Prefecture that serve as agents for National Health Insurance were the subjects of this study. "The upper limit of subsidy funds available for acupuncture and moxibustion therapy per year"was calculated from the limits of the subsidy systems that were established independently by each municipality. We then examined the relationship between this value, health indices (life expectancy and standardized mortality rate), and health care costs (actual health care costs per person for inpatient and outpatient care for the treatment of illnesses).
[Results]A significant positive correlation was observed between public subsidy funds for acupuncture and moxibustion therapy and life expectancy (males:r = 0.53, P < 0.001, females:r = 0.44, P < 0.001), whereas a significant negative correlation was observed for standardized mortality rate (males:r =-0.48, P < 0.001, females:r =-0.34, P < 0.005). Furthermore, a significant negative correlation was observed between public subsidy funds for acupuncture and moxibustion therapy and health care costs (inpatient:r =-0.26, P < 0.05, outpatient:r =-0.30, P < 0.05).
[Conclusion]Most patients who use acupuncture and moxibustion therapy seek treatment primarily for symptoms involving the musculoskeletal system. The fact that life expectancy is higher when subsidy funds are greater may be considered to be caused by improvements in daily living, increased physical activity due to relief of musculoskeletal disorders through acupuncture and moxibustion therapy, and reduced risk of fatal disease (such as cancer, ischemic heart disease, and cerebrovascular disorders). It also suggests the possibility that acupuncture and moxibustion therapy inhibit the severity of fatal diseases or the conditions that may cause these fatal diseases.

Recently, the number of athletes who receive acupuncture therapy is increasing. However, most of these athletes receive acupuncture therapy with single-acupuncture and/or electro-acupuncture to a local point, or a trigger point. We experienced two water polo athletes who were improved using acupuncture and moxibustion therapy with “zuisho” therapy. Case 1 was 16 year old man. He became aware of pain in his right thumb after training, which continued with extended training time, a numbness in his left hand appeared more, and he received acupuncture and moxibustion therapy. These symptoms disappeared immediately with acupuncture and moxibustion therapy using the standard traditional methods, such as contact needling to a yuan point, and in situ acupuncture to a back shu point, etc. Case 2 was 17 year old man. He received acupuncture and moxibustion therapy for lumbago and stiffness of the neck. These symptoms disappeared immediately after acupuncture and moxibustion therapy using the standard traditional methods such as contact needling to a yuan point, and inserting needles into a back shu point, an extra meridian, etc. In these two cases, symptoms were improved with “zuisho” therapy, and both could continue with longer and more strenuous training. This suggests that acupuncture and moxibustion therapy using the standard traditional methods are useful for athletes.
