ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate MRI features of cystic oligodendrocytoma.Methods MRI features of 10 patients with oligodendroglial tumors proved with operation and pathology were analyzed retrospectively.Results Among 10 patients,lesionslocated on the supratentorium in 8 patients,while on the cerebellar vermis in 2 patients.Solitary lesion was found in 9 cases,and multiple lesions were found in 1 case.Complete cystic lesions were observed in 4 cases,large cystic lesions with solid nodules were found in 3 cases,and multi-cystic lesions were found in 3 cases.Smooth cyst wall of lesions were found in 7 cases,locally depressed and rough wall were found in 3 cases.Calcifications were found in 3 cases.Mild peritumoral edema was found in 9 cases,moderate to severe edema was found in 1 case.The lesions significantly enhanced in 3 cases,ring enhanced in 3 cases,and locally enhanced in 1 case.Conclusion COD is difficult to diagnose,but has certain MRI characteristics.COD should be considered when supratentorial complete cystic lesion or large cystic lesion with septum and/or solid nodule was found with MRI.

ABSTRACT

Objective To analyze the plain and enhanced features of multiple spiral CT in primary splenic tumors,and to evaluate the diagnostic value.Methods The spiral CT findings of 29 cases of splenic primary tumors proved by operation or biopsy were retrospectively analyzed.Results 23 cases of benign tumors (9 cases of splenic cyst,7 cases of hemangioma,3 cases of lymphangioma,2 cases of myofibroblastic tumor,hamartoma in 2 cases),clinical manifestations of mild abdominal discomfort or no symptoms;CT scan for spleen in single or multiple low density or mixed density mass.Hemangioma,wrong structure can show the tumor calcification spots,hamartoma with calcification or fat density.CT enhancement,no enhancement of splenic cyst,hemangioma and delayed enhancement,center filling;lymphangioma without slight strengthening or interval,myofibroblastic tumor or hamartoma to strengthen the characteristic of diversity.6 cases of malignant tumors (3 cases of lymphangioma,2 cases of lymphoma,1 case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma of angiosarcoma),malignant tumors had abdominal pain,weight loss and other symptoms,CT scan,spleen enlargement,mass was larger,the boundary was not clear,less calcification,can strengthen the CT,tumor metastasis;lymph enhanced slightly,angiosarcoma delayed enhancement,uneven enhancement of malignant fibrous histiocytoma.Conclusion Multi slice spiral CT scanning combined with enhancement has a high diagnostic value for primary splenic tumors.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate the cold and hot characteristics of Curcumae longae Rhizoma, Curcumae Radix and Curumae Rhizoma, and study the relationship between the content of curcumin in the three herbs and the hot and cold characteristics.Methods: MTT assay was used to investigate the effect of the three herbs on the growth of SGC-7901 in vitro.Trypan-blue staining was used to analyze the cytotoxicity, and the content of curcumin was detected by HPLC.Results: Curcumae longae Rhizoma and Curumae Rhizoma could promote the proliferation of SGC-7901 at the dose of 5 μg·ml-1 and showed hot characteristics;Curcumae Radix could inhibit the growth and proliferation of SGC-7901 within the concentration range of 5-800 μg·ml-1.Trypan-blue staining showed the three herbs had no cytotoxicity on SGC-7901.The content of curcumin in Curcumae Longae Rhizoma, Curcumae Radix and Curumae Rhizoma was 4.88%, 0.15% and 0.042%, respectively.Conclusion: The content of curcumin in the three herbs affects the hot and cold characteristics, and curcumin may be the important material basis for the hot and cold characteristics.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the characteristics of peripheral pulmonary hamartoma with multi-slice CT, in order to improve the accuracy of diagnosis of the disease. Methods The multi-slice CT manifestations in 16 peripheral pulmonary hamartoma patients who were confirmed by pathology were retrospectively analyzed. Results Most of the patients were in middle age, whose ages were 22 - 67 years old, and the average age was 43.2 years old. All the patients had solitary pulmonary nodules, with clear boundary, with 7 cases in right lung and 9 cases in left lung. Pulmonary nodules were round in 6 cases, similarity round in 7 cases and irregular shape in 3 cases, among which 1 case had shallow lobulation and 2 cases had deep lobulation. Two cases had pleural up syndrome, and 1 case had vascular convergence sign. The diameter of the lesions was 1.5 - 5.2 cm, and the average was 2.48 cm, with 1 case >5 cm. One case showed a typical popcorn calcification. There were stippled calcification in 2 cases and annular calcification in 1 case. Intralesional fat only showed in 3 cases, and both fat and calcification in 2 cases. Seven cases showed homogeneous soft tissue density, neither fat nor calcification. Enhanced scan: 5 cases had no abnormal enhancement, 11 had mild enhancement of soft tissue. Conclusions Fat and calcification are the typical signs of peripheral pulmonary hamartoma. Clear boundary and no enhancement or slight enhancement is also the important diagnostic basis, and lobulation and pleural up syndrome do not exclude the possible pulmonary hamartoma.

In this article, we review the literatures regarding stroke in children with DKA.

ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate the hot and cold characteristics of 10 antibiotics.Methods MTT assay was used to investigate the effects of 10 antibiotics on the growth and proliferation of cultured SMMC7721 cells and MFC-7 cells in vitro .Morphological changes were observed under the inverted microscope.Results The 10 antibiotics,namely,ampicillin,cefixime,cefpodoxime proxetil,cefaclor,cefalexin,azithromycin,clarithromycin, roxithromycin,doxycycline and oxytetracycline showed cold or cool characteristics.Morphological observation showed that cells treated with these drugs presented decreased cell density and turned round.Conclusion The results of this study demonstrated that the cytological method can be used to evaluate the hot and cold characteristics of western drugs.This simple and reliable method will promote research on Chinese medicalization of western drugs.

ABSTRACT

Thirteen of 4-anilinoquinazoline derivatives with imine groups at position 6 of quinazoline ring were synthesized and their antitumor activities were evaluated by MTT assay and Western blotting analysis. Among these compounds, 13a-131 were reported first time. The MTT assay was carried out on three human cancer cell lines (A549, HepG2 and SMMC7721) with EGFR highly expressed. Among the tested compounds, 13i and 13j exhibited notable inhibition potency and their IC50 values on three cell lines were equivalent to or less than those of gefitinib. Compound 14, without imine group substituted, displayed excellent inhibitor potency only on A549 cell line. Compounds 14 and 13j were chosen to perform Western blotting analysis on A549. The results showed that both of the compounds could inhibit the expression level of phosphorylated EGFR remarkably. It was concluded that the inhibitor potency of compound 14 was almost equivalent to that of gefitinib and the inhibitor potency of 13j was better than that of gefitinib.

ABSTRACT

Objective To analyze the MRI features of Ewing sarcoma/peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors(pPNETs) arising from the meninges.Methods The MRI imaging of 9 patients with Ewing sarcoma/pPNET were reviewed retrospectively,and imaging features and pathological characteristics were analyzed.Results The age of most patients ranged from 10 to 20 years.Magnetic resonance revealed a spindle-like lesion with a wide base in 8 cases.The lesions showed heterogenous iso-or hypo-intense signal on T1 WI in 7 cases,heterogenous hypo-iso-intense signal on T1 WI in 2 case,and iso-or mildly hypderisointense on T2WI in all cases.The solid part of the tumor was heterogeneously enhanced after injection of gadolinium with cyst degeneration or necrosis.The dural tail sign could be seen in 3 cases.The adjacent skull erosion could be seen in 6 cases.The breakthrough of the plate of cranium and soft-tissue invasion was present in 2 cases.The right eye proptosis was present in 1 case.The distant metastasis was found in 3 cases.Pathology showed that the lesions had high cell density.Hemorrhage and necrosis could be observed.The cells were like lymphocytes and spindle cells with transparent cytoplasm.CD99 and Vimentin were expressed in all tumor cells.Conclusion The imaging findings of the meningeal pPNET are different from meningiomas,which could be useful for the diagnosis and differential diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

We examined the biocompatibility and the safety of a-calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CSH)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites for bone reconstruction application. The biocompatibility of the CSH/MWCNT composites was evaluated by the measures which taking L929 fibroblast cells cultured in the extracted liquid of the composite soaking solution and putting bone marrow stromal cells planted on the composite pellets in vitro, respectively. The cell proliferation was evaluated by MTT test and further observed using an inverted optical microscope and a scanning electric microscope. The toxicity of the composites was evaluated by acute and subacute systemic toxicity test. Long-term muscle and bone implantation in vivo tests were also conducted. L929 fibroblast cells grew well in the extracted liquid, as well as bone marrow stromal cells that could adhere on the surface of sample pellets and proliferated rapidly. MTT test showed that there were no significant differences between the experimental and control groups (P > 0.05). In vivo test manifested that the composites were no toxicity, no irritation to skin and good for bone defect reconstruction. It was proved that a-calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CSH)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites exhibited excellent biocompatibility for the potential application in bone tissue engineering.

ABSTRACT

A series of paeonol derivatives have been synthesized by simple acylation and etherification of the paeonol. Anti-tumor activities of the synthesized compounds were evaluated against HeLa and MCF-7 cells lines in vitro by the standard MTT assay. It was found that the derivatives were more active against HeLa than MCF-7. The results also indicated that 4-methoxy group is the synergistic group of paeonol's anti-tumor activity and ketone carbonyl side chain is essential functional group of paeonol's anti-tumor activity. Compound 2d had stronger antiproliferative activities than paeonol against HeLa and MCF-7 cell lines with IC50 values of 2.67 and 4.74 micromol x L(-1) respectively. The results showed that paeonol derivatives were worth to be intensively studied further.

ObjectiveTo establish a novel assay for HIV-1 p24 ultrasensitive detection based on Gold Nanoparticle Probe (GNP) and PCR.MethodsSandwich ELISA method was established by a pair of anti-p24 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs),1G12 and 1D4,and was used to detect recombinant HIV-1 p24 antigen.The bio-barcode DNA was 47 bp,selected from genome of Arabidopsis,and formed double-stranded DNA by hybridization with the capture DNA (complementary with bio-barcode DNA) modified with sulfhydryl.Then double-stranded DNA were conjugated on the surface of 1D4-modified gold nanoparticles by sulfhydryl,and the Gold Nanoparticle Probe was produced.1G12 was precoated in the micropaltes,and in the presence of target recombinant HIV-1 p24 protein,a sandwich immuno-complex would form by adding GNP.Then the bio-barcode DNA in the immuno-complex were released by heating as detection signal,and consequently characterized by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with synthesized special primers and analyzed by 4% agar gel electrophoresis,so HIV-1 p24 antigen could be evaluated.The sensitivity comparison between the new assay and ELISA can be done.ResultsSandwich ELISA was used to quantify HIV-1 p24 antigen by monoclonal antibodies 1G12 and 1D4,and the limit of detection (LOD) was 1000 pg/ml.The new GNP assay was established by the same pair of antibodies,combined with PCR and agar gel electrophoresis,and was used to indirectly detect HIV-1 p24 antigen.The band intensity of PCR products paralleled with the quantity of HIV-1 p24 antigen,and the limit of detection (LOD) could reach down to 1 pg/ml.ConclusionThe new assay based on GNP and PCR was efficient in the detection of HIV-1 p24,which is at least 3 orders of magnitude more sensitive than traditional ELISA.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the MRI features of intracranial lymphoplasmacyte-rich meningioma and the corelation between the MRI features and pathologic findings. Methods The MRI and pathologic data of 7 patients with lymphoplasmacyte-rich meningioma were reviewed retrospectively. All cases were proved by surgery and pathological examinations. Results All lesions were solitary. The tumors crawled along meninges in 6 cases and in 5 cases the tumors did not appear as mass lesions. In 2 cases, the tumors appeared as half-moon. The boundary of all of the tumors was unclear, accompanying heavy peritumoral brain edema. The brain invasion can be seen in 7 cases. The lesions showed hypo-isointense signal on T1 WI in 7 cases, hyper-isointense signal in 5 cases and hypo-isointense in 2 cases on T2 WI.Enhancement scan demonstrated marked enhancement in 7 cases. Extensive thickening of the meninges was observed in 6 cases. Pathological results showed that the cells were abundant and diversified, with a great quantity of lymphoplasmacytes, and there were typical meningeal epithelial cells area in the surgical specimen. Conclusion The MRI findings of lymphoplasmacyte-rich meningioma show some features different from other common meningiomas, which would be helpful to the diagnosis and differential diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the value of transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) in diagnosing adult multiple atrial septal defect (MASD). Methods Thirty adult patients with MASD were examined with TTE, 25 patients were examined also with TEE, 26 patients were examined with cardiac catheterization as well. Transcatheter closure of MASD was performed in 20 patients and succeeded in 18, while open-chest operation was performed in 4 patients. Results Foramen secundum atrial septal defect was diagnosed with both TTE and TEE with an accuracy rate of 60.00% (18/30) and 96.00% (24/25), respectively. The main color Doppler flow imaging (CDFI) feature of adult MASD was multiple colorful left-to-right shunt signals through the atrial septal designated, i.e. colander sign of CDFI. Conclusion TTE has some difficulties and TEE has specific value in diagnosing adult MASD. TTE can be used before open-chest operation. TEE is necessary before transcatheter occlusion to make sure of the amount and location of atrial septal defect.

BACKGROUND: Peak bone mass and standard deviation (SD) in different regions are varied, which have great influence on diagnosis of osteoporosis. To establish a complete database can provide accurate evidence for osteoporosis diagnosis. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of bone mineral densities (BMD) and their SD of young people on the detective rate of osteoporosis in general population. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING: Investigation analysis was performed at Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Jiaxing and Chengdu between January 1997 and December 1999. PARTICIPANTS: 11418 subjects from related 6 centers of BMD reference database in China were investigated and analyzed using prospective and retrospective methods, including 3 666 males, and 7 752 females aged 20-90 years. Of them, 2385 were from Beijing, 1178 from Guangzhou, 1404 from Shanghai, 2938 from Nanjing, 1425 from Chengdu, and 2088 from Jiaxing. The subjects were selected from community investigation, physical examination volunteers. METHODS: BMD of the lumbar spine (L2-4) and the hip in 11, 418 subjects from the related 6 centers in China was measured with GE-Lunar dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and the BMD reference database was established. The accuracy rate of the inner machine was 0.3%-0.7%, and the accuracy of different machines averaged 1.1%. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Lumbar BMD distribution of different age groups from 6 centers; influence of young people's BMD and its SD on detective rate of osteoporosis. RESULTS: Different BMD and SD were found in the individual subject from 6 centers, and the maximum differences were 0.098 g/cm2 and 0.027 g/cm2. With mean BMD and SD of the individuals from 6 centers as references, different T-scores and the detective rates of osteoporosis derived from the T-scores were found in the same group. The detective rate increased by 1.6% when BMD of the young people increased by 0.01 g/cm2 (positive correlation), but the detective rate decreased by 4% when SD increased by 0.01g/cm2 (negative correlation). CONCLUSION: Changes in BMD and SD of the young people can influence the detective rate of osteoporosis. To achieve comparability for the detective rate of osteoporosis in different centers, the specific reference database should be established for the same race, the same area, and the same bone densitometry machine. The T-score should be determined with the normal BMD and SD of the young, people as the reference database.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To determine the effects of raloxifene hydrochloride (RLX) on bone mineral density (BMD), bone metabolism markers and serum lipids in healthy postmenopausal women in Beijing.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>A multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted in a total of 204 healthy postmenopausal women (age 59.5 +/- 5.0 years and weight 62.8 +/- 8.7 kg) treated with either RLX 60 mg (n = 102) or placebo (n = 102) daily for 12 months. BMD, serum lipids, and bone markers were measured before and after drug administration.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Compared with placebo, RLX produced a significant increase in both total lumbar spine and total hip BMD. For the lumbar spine, percentage increase in total BMD was 2.3% with RLX compared with a decrease of 0.1% with placebo (P < 0.001). Corresponding values for total hip BMD were a 2.5% increase for RLX and a 1.1% increase for placebo (P = 0.011). For biochemical markers of bone metabolism, serum osteocalcin and C-telopeptide, percentage decreases were 27.65% and 24.02% in RLX-treated subjects. Corresponding values in placebo were a 10.64% decrease and a 15.75% increase (RLX compared with placebo, both P < 0.001). For total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, percentage decreases were 6.44% and 34.58% in the RLX-treated group. Corresponding values in placebo-treated patients were a 1.44% increase and a 19.07% decrease (RLX compared with placebo, both P < 0.001). No differences were found for high-density lipoprotein cholesterol or triglyceride levels between the two groups. Only 5 subjects discontinued early owing to an adverse event (3 in the RLX group and 2 in the placebo group).</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>This study confirms that RLX exerts positive effects on the skeleton, increasing BMD and decreasing biochemical markers of bone metabolism, and has a positive effect on the overall serum lipid profile in postmenopausal women in China.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To investigate the effects of two different dosages of conjugated equine estrogen (CEE) on preventing bone loss and relieving the symptoms of menopausal syndrome in women at an early stage of menopause.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>A total of 236 postmenopausal women were randomly allocated to one of the following groups: Group A: 0.625 mg CEE + 2 mg medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) + 1 tab Caltrate-D per day; Group B: 0.3 mg CEE + 2 mg MPA + 1 tab Caltrate-D per day; Group C: 1 tab Caltrate-D per day as the control group. The study was continued for 2 years.The following parameters were monitored: (1) L2-4 bone mineral density (BMD) (measured with dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEX)), (2) menopausal syndrome improvement (assessed by comparing Kupperman scores), (3) vaginal bleeding rate, and the thickness of the endometrium and breast in each group.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>Overall, 213 cases (90%) completed the 1-year study and 176 cases (75%) completed the 2-year study. The percentage changes in L2-4 BMD at the 12th and 24th month in Group A were +2.3% and +3.7%, respectively, with the posttreatment values being significantly higher than pretreatment values (P < 0.001). The percentage changes were +2.7% at 12th month (P < 0.05) and +0.7% at 24th month (P > 0.05) in Group B. And that of Group C were -0.4% at 12th month and -1.6% at 24th month (P > 0.05). L2-4 BMD in both Group A and B was significantly higher than that in Group C at 12th and 24th month (A vs C, P < 0.001; B vs C, P < 0.05). Kupperman Scores were significantly reduced after 1, 3, 6, 12 and 24 months in all 3 groups when compared with baseline (P < 0.001). Scores in Group A and Group B were significantly lower than that in Group C (P < 0.001). However, the vaginal bleeding rates in Group A were significantly higher than that in Group B or in Group C. There was no atypical hyperplasia of endometrium in the 3 groups by the end of the study. One patient in Group A developed superficial thrombophlebitis by the end of 12th month.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Continuous combination of CEE and MPA is effective in preventing bone loss and relieving the symptoms of menopausal syndrome in women at an early stage of menopause. The vaginal bleeding rates in the Group treated with 0.625 mg/d CEE were significantly higher than those treated with 0.3 mg/d CEE.</p>

Objective To analyze the MRI features of intracranial ectopic germinomas compared with pathologic findings.Methods MRI manifestations of intracranial ectopic germinomas in 24 cases verified by operation and pathology were retrospectively analyzed.Results Tumors were located at suprasellar region in 5 cases,basal nucleus region in 6 cases,round lateral ventriculus in 2 cases,pellucid septum and lateral ventriculus in 1 case,3 cases suprasellar and pineal region in 3 cases,basal nucleus and pineal region in 3 cases,pineal region and round lateral ventriculus in 2 cases,lateral ventriculus,and third ventricles as well as pineal region in 2 cases.Lesions were showed marked enhancement in 22 cases and 10 cases had cystic degeneration on MRI.Pathologically,18 of 24 cases were seen clear border,cystic degeneration 11 cases,hemorrhage 2 cases and calcification 2 cases.Conclusion Intracranial ectopic germinomas are common in male children and are of MR characteristics,its MRI findings are correlated with pathology.

ABSTRACT

Objective To establish a new method to identify and analyze Qingdai Powder and its composition.Methods X-ray Diffraction with Fourier pattern was used.Results The standard X-ray diffraction with Fourier pattern and characteristic diffraction peaks of Qingdai Powder and its composition drugs were obtained.Conclusion The powder X-ray diffraction method can be used as a simple and convenient method for the identification of Qingdai Powder and its composition drugs.
