ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The objective of this article is to present an educational proposal based on Olympic Wrestling training for personal and social development in teenagers in extracurricular settings. For this, the ethnographic and documentary methodologies were used in order to answer the question, can there be personal and social development when training wrestling in educational institutions? The bibliographic review was applied in two phases, the first one, called phase I, allowed the analysis of the selected thematic units to later assume a phase II, which was propositional based on the theoretical argumentation and the contextualization that allowed to present the objectives, the pedagogical methodology, the relationship with the official Physical Education curriculum, general activities and evaluation; to fill in some information gaps, the interview was applied to ten physical education teachers from educational institutions in the Costa region, all of them former wrestling athletes. Both instruments were based on two dimensions: the first one, The Olympic Wrestling: between the curricular and the extracurricular, and the second one, The Olympic wrestling in the personal and social formation of the teenagers. After a critical analysis of the results, the extracurricular wrestling proposal was obtained. It addresses the importance of implementing Olympic Wrestling as an innovative extracurricular activity, which promotes personal development in terms of self-esteem, self-control and self-care, as well as social skills of cooperation, respect for rules and care for others.

ABSTRACT

@#Introduction: Humeral shaft fractures are the most common injury sustained in arm wrestling, and its various biomechanical, anatomical, kinematic and electromyographic aspects have been studied and reported. We present a series of six cases of humeral shaft fractures in the arm wrestlers and a review of basic science studies to determine the factors contributing to their causation. Materials and methods: Six humeral shaft fractures associated with arm wrestling were treated between December 2018 and January 2020. The medical records and radiographs were retrospectively reviewed. In addition, the characteristics of the patients, their opponents, and the fractures were noted in a pre-designed data sheet. Results: There were six men with an average age of 27.5 years (SD ± 8.9). All were amateurs who were occasional arm wrestlers. Three fractures each were sustained in the sitting and standing position, four in the losing phase, one in the winning phase, and one in the stalling phase. The dominant side humerus was involved in all but one case. The fracture types were 12-A1 (n=4); 12-B1 (n=1); 12-A2 (n=1). Three fractures were treated by open reduction and internal fixation, while three were treated conservatively with satisfactory healing. Conclusion: Humeral shaft fractures in arm wrestling are common in amateurs. There is no association of the fracture with the position of the players or the phase of the match. However, arm wrestlers should be aware of this complication and should receive proper guidance to reduce the risk of humeral shaft fractures.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to investigate rs1805086 and rs1805065 polymorphisms of MSTN gene of national and amateur Turkish arm wrestlers and people leading a sedentary lifestyle, and the anthropometric properties such as hand, wrist, and forearm circumferences of national and amateur Turkish arm wrestlers are aimed to be explored. In this study, a total of 79 volunteers who were 24 national (7 females, 17 males) Turkish arm wrestlers, 21 amateur (7 females, 14 males) Turkish arm wrestlers and 34 sedentary people (12 females, 22 males) participated. To analyse the data, Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, SPSS 22 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) was used. As a result of the study, when data on rs1805086 and rs1805065 polymorphisms of MSTN gene were examined respectively, it was found out that MSTN 153KK genotype was 100.0% dominant in both national (n=24) and amateur (n=21) arm wrestlers, and it was 94.12 % dominant in sedentary people. KR genotype was observed in 5.88 % of the sedentary people. The data from the other rs1805065 polymorphism of MSTN gene showed that all participants (n = 45, 100.0 %) were carriers of normal homozygous genotype. Furthermore, for both female group and male group, there found to be statistically significant difference in terms of anthropometric properties. It can be concluded that though there was no significant difference between national and amateur Turkish arm wrestlers in terms of their MSTN gene characteristics; in terms of anthropometric properties, significant differences were discovered. It was found out that on these athletes, not MSTN gene polymorphisms but anthropometric properties were effective.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Introduction: Explosive strength is the physical capacity to generate greater muscular strength in a shorter time without losing effectiveness. This is a crucial component of sports training and an indirect indicator of yield in wrestling. Objective: Improve the explosive strength of the lower limbs through plyometric exercises performed by senior freestyle wrestlers. Methods: A correlational quasi-experimental study was conducted based on a three-stage plyometric program for the lower limbs. The study population was 15 wrestlers (male sex, age under 21 years) who were evaluated for explosive strength capacity. Results: Significant improvement was established in the following tests: vertical jump (VJ: p = 0.000), horizontal jump (HJ: p = 0.000), 20-meter dash (D20m: p = 0.000) and jump 8 (J8: p = 0.001). In all cases the post-test obtained better results. Determination was made of a moderate positive linear correlation between VJ and HJ (0.50), a moderate negative correlation between HJ and C20m (-0.58), a very low negative correlation between VJ and C20m (-0.03), a moderate positive correlation between VJ and J8 (0.61), a very low positive correlation between HJ and J8 (0.16) and a moderate positive correlation between C20m and J8 (0.59). Conclusions: The plyometric intervention was found to significantly improve the explosive strength of lower limbs, thus becoming an effective alternative to indirectly enhance sport yield. Of the six linear correlations performed, four were moderate, which shows that plyometric strengthening of a specific muscular plane may consecutively improve other muscular planes related to speed and explosive strength.

ABSTRACT

This article analyzes the academic production on the content Wrestling in the curriculum of School Physical Education, presents an overview of research in the area and investigates didactic-methodological processes in teaching Wrestling in School Physical Education. We looked into the current status of production on the subject. We pointed out that Wrestling is an emerging field of research in the school context. Several factors restrict its application in schools. Although there are several proposals to systematize knowledge about Wrestling in Physical Education, they are not linked to pedagogical approaches in PE, and there is no proper teaching methodology for such knowledge as Sports Pedagogy is the main basis of the proposals. Therefore, knowledge production in the area has to be expanded to support teachers' practice at school

ABSTRACT

The Marajó wrestling (MW) is a combat sports modality still little studied at present. Traditionally practiced in the Archipelago of Marajó, Pará, this modality has experienced in the last years an imminent process of sportification. The effort to regulate it as a combat sport, however, runs through aspects of a technical nature, sports management and preservation of its cultural and traditional character. In this sense, we can see two possibilities for interventions that are not exclusive. One that tries to structure the LM as a sporting combat modality, and another that seeks its insertion as an educational content, in the field of school physical education. Aiming to connect scientific and educational values to LM, this essay aims to describe LM as it is practiced today, identifying its main techniques, sports aspects and educational characteristics, seeking applications both in the sports field and in the educational field. Besides the academic insertions of the authors with other sports modalities of combat, the study was based on a survey in the specialized literature, documentary source of traditional coaches and in conversations with renowned athletes of the Marajó region. It is now evidenced that LM has been presenting a growing process of expansion as a combat modality, and it is also perceptible that, in educational terms, its regionalism and its cultural dimension are aspects that increasingly link it with the content of the education discipline school physics. With this approach it is hoped that the study may contribute, as a field of research, to the development of a genuine struggle of the north of Brazil, be it in relation to its sociocultural and educational character or from its dimensioning as a sporting mode of combat....(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The wrestling practice has allowed the elaboration of most effective structures of the technical actions, which can be divided into actions of attacks, defenses, and counterattacks. The fighters who have a good technical development often dominate opponents who overcome them in physical strength. To this end, they resort to movements that, with their correct execution and with an exact application and direction of the internal and external forces, form a technique structure, defense and counter-technique that assure an advantage in strength or allow time. To unravel the technique laws of wrestling it is necessary to analyze all fundamental movements of the fighters. This analysis is convenient to do, first, with the study of mechanical force interaction that arises in the technical actions execution. Therefore, the study objective is to propose the biomechanical fundamentals to process of physical exercises and motor actions analysis in wrestling as a system of active movements related reciprocally(AU)

ABSTRACT

Humeral shaft fracture sustaining arm wrestling is rare, but occurs intermittently. We treated 15 cases of humeral shaft spiral fractures occurred during arm wrestling for fun since 2007. Average age was 22.47±2.69 years, average body mass index was 22.67±2.06 kg/m2. There was no prominent tendency for the fractures to occur at a certain phase of the match. Fractured level and length of each case were measured in the plain radiographs and compared with those of previous reports. Eight cases (53.3%) had an associating medial butterfly fragment, and the time taken until the fracture occurred was longer than that of simple spiral fracture (15.62±9.03 seconds vs. 7.85±2.67 seconds, p=0.048). Fractures were distributed mid to distal one third of humerus, the length of fracture was 7.93±2.69 cm and involved 25.43%±8.24% of humeral length. All cases except one treated surgically using plate and screws and returned their full activities within postoperative 3 months. Although arm wrestling is a simple and joyful sport, participants should be aware of the risks of injury during arm wrestling, especially for the amateur players.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: In wrestling, events that can cause physical changes, such as falls, contacts on the ground, lifts, bows, among others, occur. Objective: To estimate the prevalence of injuries and correlated factors in wrestlers. Materials and methods: Observational, correlational and cross-sectional study including 29 athletes of the Wrestling League of Bogotá. Results: In the past year, 15 athletes had no injury (51.72%), 11 had an injury (37.93%) and 2 had 4 lesions (6.89%). The highest prevalence of injuries presented in shoulders (17%) and the most frequent type of injury was tendinopathy (13.79%). Body mass index (BMI) had a positive effect on the likelihood of injury (p value=0.07) with significance at 10% and, also, with an initial significant variable (p=0.014).The results of the sit and reach test were significant at 10% (p value=0.09), indicating a slight positive relationship between athletes who are more flexible and the injury. Conclusions: The most prevalent injury was tendinopathy on the shoulder. BMI, the start of practice at 13 to 16 years of age, and the sit and reach test have a positive significance towards the number of injuries in the past year.

ABSTRACT

Ηerpes Gladiatorum (HG) outbreaks should be regarded as serious long term infections that can have negative consequences on the health of individual athletes and the athletic community as a whole. Purpose: The main goal of this analysis was to provide a scientific basis and evidence that the herpes infections in athletes caused by Herpes Simplex Virus type I (HSV-1), might not be appropriately called Herpes Gladiatorum (HG), but should be renamed as Herpes Luctatorum (HL). Methods: The methodology of the current study was included the use of systematic review of the writings in the ancient Greek and the modern literature. Results: From literature review and careful consideration of sports scenes, we found that the sport in which there was extensive physical contact in antiquity is wrestling, and this is not a “mono- machia” (single combat). Therefore, the herpes simplex dermatological infections could occur at a priority, as well as in quantity in wrestler athletes (Latin: Luctators), and not in Monomachus (Latin: Gladiators). Conclusion: The most appropriate terminology for skin infections caused by HSV-1 in athletes would thus be Herpes Luctatorum and not Herpes Gladiatorum, as has been widely adopted by the medical community.

ABSTRACT

The fracture of the humerus during arm wrestling are uncommon, but may occur in the shaft or medial condyle. In the shaft of humerus, the fractures are usually spiral and between the middle and distal third, with or without neurological involvement. A case of a comminuted spiral fracture with butterfly fragment of the distal third of the humerus is reported which had occurred during arm wrestling and was treated by open reduction and internal fixation. The possible mechanism of injury and the question of treatment are discussed.
