ABSTRACT

The loss of the bone and gingival tissue in the frontal zone is a challenge to the clinician due to the smiling aesthetic requirements. The loss of the teeth sustentation tissue creates an inharmonic relation between the clinical crowns and the interdental niches. The purpose of this study is to report a clinical case of aesthetic rehabilitation of the anterior maxillary through dentogingival prosthesis on implants. The treatment accomplished after the clinical diagnosis consisted in molding study, taking pictures for digital planning (DSD), confection of the provisional ones, opening the dental implant, assorting of the prosthetic abutments, placing the dental abutment on the dental implant, gingival remodeling with provisional ones, molding work, adjusting and testing the porcelain crown, screw driving the prosthesis on the implant and preserving the patient. This rehabilitation may be a viable alternative to replacing both the gingival and bone tissue when regeneration does not have a favorable prognosis, or in patients whom do not wish or cannot undergo regenerative procedures. We conclude that dentogingival prosthesis on implant has significantly improved both the functional and aesthetic requirements of the patient(AU)

ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate the change of diameter of different injection-molded thermoplastic materials. Material and Methods: Four thermoplastic injection-molded materials were analyzed (Bre.flex 2nd edition, Vertex ThermoSens, Perflex Biosens and Polyan IC). A total of 432 test samples were made in the form of an "hourglass". All samples were divided into three groups: Group I (Control) - consisting of 36 test samples for each type of material, that was not exposed to artificial aging or a wet environment; Group II - consisting of 36 test samples for each type of material, that were artificially aged through dehydration; Group III - specimen were subjected to artificial aging without dehydration. The diameter of each specimen was measured with a digital caliper. Data were analysed using the Student's t-test. Results: Regarding to shrinkage, the samples from the Bf Control group have a mean value of 1.56 mm and was observed a shrinkage of the injection-molded polyamide material within 0.25%. The comparison between the samples from Group II and Group III showed statistically significant differences (p<0.001). There were no significant differences between groups for Thermosens and Biosens (p>0.05). The comparison between Group II and Group III for Polyan IC samples shows that Group III has a higher arithmetic mean value (p<0.01). Conclusion: Shrinkage of the polymers during the injection process is present in all materials. The thermocycling and the storage in a dry or in a wet environment of the samples results in a change of the diameter in almost every single type of material.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: In order to aid the development of practical oral health improvement programs for adults, this study examined whether a correlation exists between oral health indices assessed by experts and self-perceived oral health status. METHODS: Raw data from the second year (2013–2015) of the sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were analyzed. Among those surveyed, adults over the age of 19 were designated as research subjects. RESULTS: The DT indices, prosthetics indices, and Community Periodontal indices were higher when the subjective oral health status was “Bad.” CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study demonstrated the consistency between subjective and objective oral health status. Thus, self-perceived oral health status is a reliable index to evaluate adult oral health projects for improving the quality of life of adults, improving their oral health, and evaluating future oral health services.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The laser processability of dental prosthesis is investigated using two ceramic composites, including 3M, Lava Ultimate and Ivoclar vivadent, IPS e.max. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The CO₂ laser, picosecond laser and femtosecond laser are used to assess the processing power of dental prosthetic materials Lava Ultimate and IPS e.max and the line processing shape was measured using a confocal microscope. RESULTS: The brittleness, carbonization and micro crack of the ceramic composite were influenced by heat accumulation of the material and could be controlled by the laser power and pulse time. CONCLUSION: In the case of CO₂ lasers, micro crack and carbonation occurred immediately, and in the picosecond laser processing, the micro cracks are partially improved, but the carbonization occurs continuously. Finally, we confirmed the high efficiency of laser processing with femtosecond laser. In particular, Lava Ultimate, a ceramic resin composite material, showed the best processability when processed using a femtosecond laser.

ABSTRACT

Fall is the most common cause of trauma in the elderly and a major reason of dental injury. Maxillary anterior region is the most vulnerable area to the traumatic fall. Loss of teeth and adjacent tissue in this area results in maxillofacial defects and inappropriate maxillomandibular relationship. Reconstruction of the loss requires comprehensive and careful planning to fulfill not only functional but also esthetic demand. Prosthetic approach can avoid surgically extensive intervention, reducing both treatment cost and time. This clinical report describes a 78-year-old woman with the loss of teeth and alveolar bone in maxillary anterior region due to a traumatic fall, rehabilitated with a metal-ceramic fixed dental prosthesis using gingival porcelain.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: the use of extra-short implants in oral implantology it allows us to rehabilitate extremly resorbed bone. The clinical use of these implants generate a Crown-implant ratio desfavorable (2:1 or 3:1 in some cases). ABSTRACT

Introduction: The discovery of titanium osseointegrated implants enabled the development of screw or cement-retained dental prostheses. However, each retention method involves different aspects. Objective: this study aims at reviewing the literature of in vitro and in vivo studies of the last 7 years on the mechanical, biological, aesthetic and occlusal properties and the cost of screw and cement- retained prostheses to identify what can promote greater longevity and economy by considering the patient's clinical framework. Data sources: Our method was based on the collection of scientific articles published in English from 2012 to 2018 in the PubMed database. Summary of the findings: we noted that in some clinical cases, a retention method was more appropriate than the other, as seen in the access to the posterior region or the palatal face of the crowns, the position/ angulation of implants in the anterior region, the patient's health and economic conditions. Both protheses can suffer or not from mechanical and biological complications. Reversibility can also be associated to cement-retained protheses. There are alternatives to screwed prosthetics to achieve satisfactory aesthetics in the anterior region despite being more expensive. Ideal occlusion tends to be more easily achieved by cemented prosthesis as it avoids prosthetics screws and the formation of crown holes, despite the contributions of correct planning followed by the analysis of static and in motion occlusions. Conclusion: eachretention method has its advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, the best method is the one that best fits the characteristics and needs of each patient.

ABSTRACT

Surgeries of partial or total resection of the maxilla in oncological patients generate functional and aesthetic impairment, altering swallowing, chewing, phonetics and aspiration, reducing the quality of life of the patient. Thus, the objective of this study was to describe the oral rehabilitation of a patient with maxillary total prosthesis and a conventional mandibular total prosthesis. This patient had undergone surgery of partial resection of the maxillary alveolar ridge, without bucosinusal communication, for being a carrier of grade I squamous cell carcinoma. A 69-year-old male patient sought care at the Oral Oncology Center of FOA - UNESP, for denture after two years of surgery. Decreased lip support was observed in the place where surgical resection had been performed, generating aesthetic and functional impairment to the patient. In this way, it was proposed to make a complete maxillary full prosthesis and conventional lower prosthesis, which were installed and adjusted properly. After 1 year of follow-up, the patient was satisfied with the treatment, which returned his aesthetics, function and phonetics(AU)

ABSTRACT

Candida species inhabit the oral cavity of all individuals who wear complete denture and whose material is the same as that used in splints. Assess the growth of C. albicans in occlusal and palatal splints used for treatment of TMD so that the potential risks of oral microbiota can be assessed. The growth of Candida spp. was assessed in the saliva of 27 individuals wearing splints for treatment of TMD. They were divided into two groups: G1 (n = 14), individuals wearing occlusal splint; and G2 (n = 13), individuals wearing palatal splint. Saliva samples were collected during placement of the splints (T1) and after 4 months (T2), being stored in PBS (10 mL) after 60-second rinses. It was observed that patients wearing occlusal splints (G1) had an increase of 0.648 CFU/mL (Log 10), with statistically significant differences (P = 0.043) for C. albicans (42.33%), C. glabrata (5.52%), C. krusei (41.72%) and C. tropicalis (10.43%). In the group of patients wearing palatal splints (G2), there was a decrease of 0.101 CFU/mL (Log 10), was observed with (P = 0.964) only the presence of C. albicans. The results suggest that growth of Candida species was greater in patients wearing occlusal splints compared to those wearing palatal ones as the presence of different yeast species was found in the former.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To analyze the offer of dental prosthesis by Centers of Dental Specialties (CEO) considering the need by individuals aged 65-74 years in state capitals and other regions of the country. Material and Methods: The study was conducted with data from the external evaluation of the Improving Access and Quality Program (AVE/PMAQ CEO) and with data from the SBBRASIL 2010 project. AVE / PMAQ CEO is an evaluative investigation using a cross-sectional research design, performed in all CEOs of Brazil, totaling 932 services evaluated. The analysis of data and distribution of CEOs that offered dental prosthesis was described by maps, using TabWin (DATASUS) and quantitative description of the following variables: need for total and partial dentures, CEO, Regional Prosthodontic Laboratories (RLDP), average monthly number of delivered prostheses and the proportion of capitals with RLDP, number of CEOs, RLDP and prostheses delivered per 100,000 inhabitants in state capitals and other regions. Results: Of the 5,570 municipalities in the country, 780 have CEO, mainly located on municipalities with larger populations. Most CEOs were located in the northeastern (38.3%) and southeastern regions of Brazil (36.2%) with the northern and mid-western regions presenting the lowest absolute number of units. Low offer of prostheses was observed, considering the high need of dentures, as well as an unequal distribution among Brazilian regions. A high percentage of older adults aged 65-74 years require total (74.6%) or partial (99.8%) prosthetic rehabilitation, more critical situation is observed in the northern and northeastern regions. Conclusion: The provision of dental services in CEOs is still limited and unevenly distributed, especially for PPR, compromising the universality and integrality of oral health care.

ABSTRACT

Communication between the dentist and the dental prosthesis technician is fundamental for treatments. The conventional technique of die casting models consists of their individualization in the preparations region, through plaster cutting and elimination outside the space corresponding to the gingival sulcus in the terminal region. The aim of this article is to describe two clinical cases in which an innovative technique of die casting models was used.
