ABSTRACT
O modelo de demandas e recursos foi utilizado para identificar o poder preditivo do estilo pessoal do terapeuta e do trabalho emocional (demandas), e da inteligência emocional e autoeficácia profissional (recursos) sobre as dimensões da síndrome de Burnout (SB), em uma amostra de 240 psicólogos clínicos brasileiros. Os dados foram coletados por meio de plataforma online, tendo como instrumentos de pesquisa um Questionário de dados sociodemográficos e laborais, o Cuestionario para la Evaluación del Síndrome de Quemarse por el Trabajo, o Cuestionario del Estilo Personal del Terapeut, o Questionário de Avaliação Relacionado a Demandas Emocionais e Dissonância da Regra da Emoção, Medida de Inteligência Emocional, e Escala de Autoeficácia Geral Percebida. Os resultados obtidos revelaram um modelo preditor das dimensões da SB, constituído pelas variáveis dissonância emocional, automotivação, demandas emocionais, instrução, envolvimento e autoeficácia. Ressalta-se a relevância de estratégias voltadas para a prevenção da SB nessa categoria profissional, bem como a necessidade de ações que visem a promoção e o desenvolvimento da inteligência emocional e da autoeficácia como fortalecimento dos recursos emocionais para atuação na prática clínica.(AU)
The Model of Demands - Resources was used to identify the predictive power of therapist's personal style, emotional work (Demands), Emotional intelligence, and professional self-efficacy (Resources) over the Burnout syndrome dimensions in a sample of 240 Brazilian clinical psychologists. The data was collected by an on-line platform using a Labor and social demographic data questionnaire, a work Burnout Syndrome Evaluation questionnaire (CESQT - Cuestionario para la Evaluación del Síndrome de Quemarse por el Trabajo), the short version of the Therapist Personal Style Questionnaire (EPT-C Cuestionario del Estilo Personal del Terapeuta), an Evaluation questionnaire related to emotional demands and emotion rule dissonance, and the Emotional Intelligence Measure (EIM) and Perceived General Self-Efficacy Scale (GPSS) as research instruments. Results showed a predictor model of Burnout syndrome constituted by the variables Emotional dissonance, Self-motivation, Emotional demands, Instruction, Involvement, and Self-efficacy. We emphasize the relevance of strategies to prevent Burnout Syndrome in this professional category and the need for actions to promote and develop emotional intelligence and self-efficacy as a strengthening factor of the emotional resources to work as a clinical psychologist.(AU)
Se utilizó el modelo demandas y recursos para identificar el poder predictivo del estilo personal del terapeuta y del trabajo emocional (demandas), y de la inteligencia emocional y autoeficacia profesional (recursos) sobre las dimensiones del síndrome de Burnout (SB), en una muestra de 240 psicólogos clínicos brasileños. Los datos se recolectaron de una plataforma en línea, utilizando como instrumentos de investigación un cuestionario de datos sociodemográficos y laborales, el Cuestionario para la Evaluación del Síndrome de Quemarse por el Trabajo, el Cuestionario del Estilo Personal del Terapeuta, el Cuestionario de Evaluación Relacionado con Demandas Emocionales y Disonancia de la Regla de la Emoción, la Medida de Inteligencia Emocional y Escala de Autoeficacia General Percibida. Los resultados obtenidos revelaron un modelo predictor de las dimensiones de SB, constituido por las variables disonancia emocional, automotivación, exigencias emocionales, instrucción, implicación y autoeficacia. Se destaca la relevancia de las estrategias dirigidas a la prevención del SB en esta categoría profesional, así como la necesidad de acciones dirigidas a promover y desarrollar la inteligencia emocional y la autoeficacia como fortalecimiento de los recursos emocionales para trabajar en la práctica clínica.(AU)

Este estudo analisa o estresse ocupacional entre psicólogos que atuavam na Atenção Primária à Saúde durante a pandemia ocasionada pela covid-19, assim como as características sociodemográficas e laborais dos participantes e sua relação com o estresse ocupacional. Participaram da pesquisa 70 psicólogos atuantes em 51 unidades básicas de saúde das regiões Oeste e Extremo Oeste catarinense. Para coleta de dados, um questionário sociodemográfico e a versão reduzida da Job Stress Scale (JSS) foram aplicados. A análise dos dados foi realizada por meio da estatística descritiva e inferencial. Identificou-se que 35,7% dos psicólogos apresentaram alto desgaste no trabalho; 28,6% baixo desgaste; 27,1% se mostraram em trabalho passivo; e 8,6% em trabalho ativo. No modelo de regressão linear, os fatores associados à dimensão Demanda da JSS foram: possuir filho (a) (coeficiente -1,49; IC 95% -2,75 a -0,23) e afastamento do trabalho nos últimos 12 meses (coeficiente 1,88; IC 95% 0,60 a 3,15). Os psicólogos com hipertensão arterial sistêmica autorreferida apresentaram, em média, 3,96 pontos a menos no escore de Apoio social (IC 95% -7,06 a -0,85), quando comparados aos não hipertensos, e entre os psicólogos que trabalhavam no turno da manhã identificou-se aumento de 4,46 pontos, em média, no escore de Apoio social (IC 95% 0,90 a 8,02) em relação aos profissionais do turno manhã e tarde. Evidenciou-se que um número significativo de psicólogos apresentava-se em alto desgaste no trabalho, com potenciais implicações para sua saúde e atuação profissional.(AU)
This study analyzed occupational stress among psychologists who worked in Primary Health Care during the COVID-19 pandemic and participants' sociodemographic and work characteristics and their relationship with occupational stress. In total, 70 psychologists working in 51 basic health units in the West and Far West regions of Santa Catarina participated in this research. A sociodemographic questionnaire and the short version of the Job Stress Scale (JSS) were applied to collect data. Data were analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics. In total, 35.7% of psychologists showed high stress at work; 28.6%, low burn out; 27.1%, passive work; and 8.6%, active work. The factors in the linear regression model that were associated with the JSS demand dimension referred to having children (coefficient −1.49; 95% CI −2.75 to −0.23) and absence from work in the last 12 months (coefficient 1.88; 95% CI 0.60 to 3.15). Psychologists with self-reported systemic arterial hypertension showed, on average, 3.96 points lower in the Social Support score (95% CI −7.06 to −0.85) than non-hypertensive ones and psychologists who worked in the morning shift, an average increase of 4.46 points in the Social Support score (95% CI 0.90 to 8.02) in relation to professionals working in the morning and afternoon shifts. A significant number of psychologists had high stress at work, with potential implications to their health and professional performance.(AU)
Este estudio evalúa el estrés laboral entre los psicólogos que trabajaron en la atención primaria de salud durante la pandemia provocada por la COVID-19, así como las características sociodemográficas y laborales de ellos y su relación con el estrés laboral. En la investigación participaron setenta psicólogos que trabajan en 51 unidades básicas de salud en las regiones oeste y lejano oeste de Santa Catarina (Brasil). Para la recolección de datos se aplicó un cuestionario sociodemográfico y la versión corta de la Job Stress Scale (JSS). El análisis de los datos se realizó mediante estadística descriptiva e inferencial. Se identificó que el 35,7% de los psicólogos presentaban alto estrés en el trabajo; el 28,6% tenían poco desgaste; el 27,1% se encontraban en trabajo pasivo; y el 8,6% en trabajo activo. En el modelo de regresión lineal, los factores asociados a la dimensión demanda de la JSS fueron: tener hijo (coeficiente -1,49; IC 95% -2,75 a -0,23) y baja laboral en los últimos 12 meses (coeficiente 1,88; IC 95% 0,60 a 3,15). Los psicólogos con hipertensión arterial sistémica autoinformada presentaron un promedio de 3,96 puntos más bajo en la puntuación de apoyo social (IC 95% -7,06 a -0,85) en comparación con los no hipertensos, y entre los psicólogos que trabajaban en el turno de la mañana, se identificó un aumento promedio de 4,46 puntos en la puntuación de apoyo social (IC 95% 0,90 a 8,02) con relación a los profesionales que laboran en el turno de mañana y tarde. Quedó evidente que un número significativo de psicólogos se encontraba en situación de alto estrés en el trabajo, con posibles implicaciones para su salud y desempeño profesional.(AU)

Esta é uma pesquisa qualitativa, em formato de ensaio, que realiza o estudo comparado de duas obras literárias, de A. Von Chamisso e E. T. A. Hoffmann, e de uma anotação do diário deste último para problematizar a repercussão de algumas formas de desestabilizações do Eu na dinâmica psíquica da neurose. O foco dos textos referidos está no fenômeno do duplo na sua forma negativizada, isto é, como o desaparecimento da imagem exterior que dá suporte ao Eu. As ausências da sombra e do reflexo são entendidas como representações metafóricas de uma alteração do Eu que engendra repercussões importantes na homeostase psíquica, sobretudo nas relações sociais de troca. Explora-se daí a menção no diário de Hoffmann de instrumentos ópticos para interrogar o uso desses aparelhos como modelos metapsicológicos na psicanálise. Salienta-se, ainda, a participação de processos de natureza estética na dinâmica psíquica do infamiliar, tomando como referência a ligação entre o conto de Hoffmann e o relato de Stendhal sobre a sua estadia em Florença.(AU)
This is a qualitative research, in essay format, which performs the comparative study of two literary works, by A. Von Chamisso and E. T. A. Hoffmann, and an annotation in the latter's diary to problematize the repercussion of some forms of destabilization of the Ego's in the psychic dynamics of neurosis. The focus of the referred texts is on the phenomenon of the double in its negative form, that is, as the disappearance of the outer image that supports the Ego. The absences of the shadow and the reflection are understood as metaphorical representations of an alteration of the Ego that generates important repercussions on psychic homeostasis, above all in social relationships of exchange. Thus, we analyze the mention of optical instruments in Hoffmann's diary to question the use of these devices as metapsychological models in psychoanalysis. Note, also, the participation of processes of aesthetic nature in the psychic dynamics of the uncanny, taking as reference the connection between Hoffmann's short story and Stendhal's account of his stay in Florence.(AU)
Este ensayo cualitativo realiza un estudio comparativo de dos obras literarias de A. Von Chamisso y de E. T. A. Hoffmann, junto con una anotación en el diario de este último para problematizar la repercusión de algunas formas de desestabilizaciones de la función del Yo en la dinámica psíquica de la neurosis. Los textos se centran en el fenómeno del doble en su forma negativa, como la desaparición de la imagen exterior que sostiene el Yo. Se entienden las ausencias de la penumbra y el reflejo como una representación metafórica de una alteración de la función del Yo que genera importantes repercusiones en la regulación psíquica, sobre todo en las relaciones de intercambio social. Se analiza la presencia en el diario de Hoffmann de instrumentos ópticos para discutir el uso de estos dispositivos como modelos metapsicológicos en psicoanálisis. Se destaca la reverberación de procesos de naturaleza estética en la dinámica psíquica de lo ominoso, tomando como referencia la conexión entre el cuento de Hoffmann y el relato de Stendhal sobre su estancia en Florencia.(AU)

O presente artigo é oriundo de pesquisa acadêmica que teve como objetivo estudar a clínica psicanalítica e seus efeitos por meio da apresentação de fragmentos de uma análise já encerrada. Para alcançar esse objetivo, utilizamos a ferramenta metodológica do fato clínico, articulando o material clínico com alguns pontos da teoria psicanalítica. Como resultado, apontamos que é possível fazer uma leitura teórico-clínica de uma experiência de análise sob a perspectiva dos movimentos discursivos, em especial do sujeito do inconsciente ($) e do objeto a, conforme apresentados na proposição dos Quatro Discursos de Lacan. Acreditamos que este estudo enfatiza a importância da especificidade da pesquisa em psicanálise em sua dimensão clínica e os possíveis efeitos produzidos por esse processo terapêutico. Dessa maneira, entendemos que a divulgação deste trabalho pode contribuir para a discussão da prática clínica entre colegas do campo psicanalítico e acadêmico, bem como para a difícil tarefa da apresentação do material clínico com a sustentação teórica necessária, a fim de fortalecermos a sempre fundamental transmissão da psicanálise.(AU)
This article comes from academic research that aimed to study the psychoanalytic clinic and its effects by presenting fragments of an analysis that has already ended. To achieve this goal, we used the methodological tool of the clinical fact, articulating the clinical material with some points of psychoanalytic theory. As a result, we point out that it is possible to make a theoretical-clinical reading of an analysis experience from the perspective of discursive movements, in particular, the subject of the unconscious ($) and of the object a, as presented in the proposition of Lacan's Four Discourses. We believe that this study emphasizes the importance of the specificity of research in psychoanalysis in its clinical dimension and the possible effects produced by this therapeutic process. In this way, we understand that the dissemination of this work can contribute to the discussion of clinical practice among colleagues in the psychoanalytic and academic fields, as well as to the difficult task of presenting clinical material with the necessary theoretical support, to strengthen the always fundamental transmission of psychoanalysis.(AU)
Este artículo surge de una investigación académica que pretendió estudiar la clínica psicoanalítica y sus efectos mediante la presentación de fragmentos de un análisis que ya terminó. Para lograr este objetivo, se utilizó la herramienta metodológica del hecho clínico articulando el material clínico con algunos puntos de la teoría psicoanalítica. El resultado permite señalar que es posible realizar una lectura teórico-clínica de una experiencia de análisis desde la perspectiva de los movimientos discursivos, en particular el sujeto del inconsciente ($) y el objeto a, como se presenta en la proposición de los cuatro discursos de Lacan. Este estudio enfatiza la importancia de la especificidad de la investigación en psicoanálisis en su dimensión clínica y los posibles efectos que produce este proceso terapéutico. De esta forma, la difusión de este trabajo puede contribuir a la discusión de la práctica clínica entre colegas del campo psicoanalítico y académico, así como a la difícil tarea de presentar material clínico con el soporte teórico necesario para fortalecer la siempre fundamental transmisión del psicoanálisis.(AU)

Burnout syndrome is a public health problem, a pathological entity that affects professionals who work directly with people, such as health professionals. It is currently described as being composed of three dimensions: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal fulfillment, and its evaluation is carried out through the Maslach Burnout Inventory questionnaire. The present study aims to measure, by means of the aforementioned instrument, the prevalence of Burnout Syndrome in pediatric interns of the Universidad Católica del Maule and find out which is the most frequent characteristic that the pathology presents, in relation to the 3 subgroups. It corresponds to a descriptive and cross-sectional study, in which the Maslach Burnout Inventory questionnaire was applied to a sample of 18 pediatric inmates of the Regional Hospital of Talca, together with an informed consent to each participant. The results showed that the burnout syndrome is present in 11,11% of pediatric interns, in addition it was observed that a high percentage manifests alterations in the studied subdimensions, which makes us conclude that attention should be given urgently to this problem, in order to guarantee mental health support to those who need it.

Resumo Objetivo Verificar a associação entre a violência laboral e a síndrome de burnout em professores. Métodos Estudo transversal realizado com 200 professores do Ensino Fundamental e Médio de um município paranaense. Os dados foram coletados por meio de um instrumento contendo um questionário com dados sociodemográficos, ocupacionais e de caracterização da violência laboral sofrida ou testemunhada nos últimos 12 meses e o Maslach Burnout Inventory para avaliar a síndrome de burnout. Para verificar a relação entre as variáveis dependentes e independentes, utilizou-se o coeficiente de correlação de Pearson, o teste de Fisher e a regressão linear múltipla. Adotou-se nível de significância de p-valor ≤ 0,05. Resultados A prevalência de violência verbal e física foi de 71,5% e 3% entre os professores, respectivamente. Verificou-se que 57,5% apresentaram alta exaustão emocional, 49% alta despersonalização e 36% baixa realização profissional, e 21% possuem indicativo para síndrome de burnout. O modelo múltiplo indicou que exaustão emocional e despersonalização estiveram direta e significativamente associadas a sofrer violência física e verbal, bem como presenciar esses tipos de violência, independentemente de sexo e idade. Conclusão Os maiores níveis de exaustão emocional e despersonalização estiveram associados à violência sofrida pelos professores. Medidas devem ser tomadas para promover um ambiente laboral mais seguro e, por sua vez, favorecer a saúde física e mental dos professores.
Resumen Objetivo Verificar la relación entre la violencia laboral y el síndrome de burnout en profesores. Métodos Estudio transversal realizado con 200 profesores de educación primaria y secundaria de un municipio del estado de Paraná. Los datos fueron recopilados mediante un instrumento con un cuestionario con datos sociodemográficos, laborales y de caracterización de la violencia laboral sufrida o presenciada en los últimos 12 meses y el Maslach Burnout Inventory para evaluar el síndrome de burnout. Para verificar la relación entre las variables dependientes e independientes, se utilizó el coeficiente de correlación de Pearson, la prueba de Fischer y la regresión lineal múltiple. El nivel de significación adoptado fue de p-valor ≤ 0,05. Resultados La prevalencia de violencia verbal fue del 71,5 % y física del 3 % entre los profesores. Se verificó que el 57,5 % presentó agotamiento emocional alto, el 49 % alta despersonalización y el 36 % baja realización profesional. El 21 % tiene indicios de síndrome de burnout. El modelo múltiple indicó que el agotamiento emocional y la despersonalización estuvieron directa y significativamente asociados a sufrir violencia física y verbal, al igual que presenciar estos tipos de violencia, independientemente del sexo y edad. Conclusión Los mayores niveles de agotamiento emocional y despersonalización estuvieron relacionados con la violencia sufrida por los profesores. Deben tomarse medidas para promover un ambiente laboral más seguro y, a la vez, favorecer la salud física y mental de los profesores.
Abstract Objective To verify the association between workplace violence and Burnout Syndrome in teachers. Methods This is a cross-sectional study conducted with 200 elementary and high school teachers from a municipality in Paraná. Data were collected through an instrument containing a questionnaire containing sociodemographic, occupational and characterization data of workplace violence suffered or witnessed in the last 12 months and the Maslach Burnout Inventory to evaluate Burnout Syndrome. Pearson's correlation coefficient, Fisher's test and multiple linear regression were used to verify the relationship between dependent and independent variables. A significance level of p-value was adopted ≤ 0.05. Results The prevalence of verbal and physical violence was 71.5% and 3% among teachers, respectively. It was found that 57.5% presented high emotional exhaustion, 49% high depersonalization and 36% low professional achievement, and 21% have indicative of Burnout Syndrome. The multiple model indicated that emotional exhaustion and depersonalization were directly and significantly associated with physical and verbal violence, as well as witnessing these types of violence, regardless of gender and age. Conclusion The highest levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization were associated with the violence suffered by teachers. Measures should be taken to promote a safer working environment and, in turn, promote the physical and mental health of teachers.

Nas reformas psiquiátricas, a ruptura com o manicômio é um problema não apenas legal, mas cultural. Basaglia alertava para o "circuito de controle" na sociedade que define os comportamentos normais e patológicos, punindo e excluindo aqueles que não podem ser domesticados ou neutralizados. Neste artigo, utilizamos dados empíricos para propor o conceito de circuito manicomial do cuidado, desenvolvendo uma configuração própria de institucionalização pela articulação dos processos de patologização, psicofarmaceuticalização e estigma. Esse conjunto de processos garante uma base cultural para os mecanismos de perpetuação do manicômio, pois produz sociabilidades e sensibilidades manicomiais. O circuito manicomial de cuidado opera a céu aberto, por intermédio de um conjunto de discursos, práticas e tecnologias que trabalham de modo interdependente com o manicômio, com a especial participação da família, instituição que tende a manipular psicofármacos ao modo de tecnologias morais. Identificamos três atos que compõem o circuito manicomial do cuidado, por meio da análise hermenêutica de base ricoeuriana de dois casos que selecionamos de uma pesquisa etnográfica sobre trajetórias de (des)institucionalização de pessoas com sofrimento psíquico: a) o processo de alimentação da identidade patológica; b) a espiral do controle: psicofármacos reforçando o estigma patologizante; e c) a domesticação extramuros da solução-manicômio. Com esta análise, busca-se suprir uma das lacunas que têm sido observadas em estudos que examinam como os contextos de Reforma Psiquiátrica têm se ocupado insuficientemente da compreensão de como dinâmicas sociais e culturais impõem desafios ao trabalho de desinstitucionalização.(AU)
In psychiatric reforms, breaking away from the asylum is not only a legal issue, but also a cultural one. Basaglia warned of the "control circuit" in society that defines normal and pathological behaviors, punishing and excluding those who cannot be domesticated or neutralized. In this article, we used empirical data to propose the concept of asylum care circuit, developing its own institutionalization configuration by articulating processes of pathologization, psychopharmaceuticalization, and stigma. This ensemble of processes guarantees a cultural basis to the mechanisms for the asylum's perpetuation, since it produces asylum sociabilities and sensibilities. The asylum care circuit operates in the open, with a set of discourses, practices, and technologies, which work interdependently with the asylum, with special participation of the family, an institution that tends to manipulate psychiatric drugs in the manner of moral technologies. We identified three integral moments that integrate this circuit of care, by Ricoeur-based hermeneutic analysis of two cases we selected from an ethnographic research on trajectories of (de)institutionalization of people suffering psychological distress: a) the bolstering process of pathological identities, b) the control spiral: psychotropic drugs retro-feeding pathologizing stigma, and c) the out-of-the-asylum domestication of the asylum-solution. With this analysis, we seek to fill one of the gaps observed in studies that examine how the contexts of psychiatric reform have insufficiently dealt with understanding how social and cultural dynamics impose challenges to the work of deinstitutionalization.(AU)
En las reformas psiquiátricas, la ruptura con el manicomio no es solo un problema legal, sino cultural. Basaglia advirtió sobre el "circuito de control" en la sociedad que define comportamientos normales y patológicos, castigando y excluyendo a aquellos que no pueden ser domesticados o neutralizados. En este artículo, basado en datos empíricos, proponemos el concepto de circuito manicomial de atención, desarrollando su propia configuración de institucionalización mediante la articulación de los procesos de patologización, psicofarmacologización y estigma. Este proceso propicia una base cultural para los mecanismos de perpetuación del manicomio, ya que produce sociabilidad y sensibilidad al manicomio. El circuito manicomial de cuidado opera mediante discursos, prácticas y tecnologías interdependientes de él, y cuenta con la participación especial de la familia, institución que tiende a manipular los psicofármacos en forma de tecnologías morales. Identificamos tres actos que conforman el circuito manicomial de cuidado a partir de un análisis hermenéutico ricoeuriano de dos casos que seleccionamos de una investigación etnográfica sobre trayectorias de (des)institucionalización de personas con sufrimiento psíquico: a) El proceso de alimentación de la identidad patológica, b) el espiral de control: psicofármacos que refuerzan el estigma patologizante, y c) la domesticación extramuros de la solución-manicomio. Este análisis permite suplir una de las lagunas que se ha observado en los estudios de los contextos de la Reforma Psiquiátrica, debido a la insuficiente preocupación por comprender cómo las dinámicas sociales y culturales imponen desafíos al trabajo de desinstitucionalización.(AU)

Introducción: Las frecuentes quejas expresadas por profesionales de diferentes especialidades vinculadas a las tensiones generadas por el trabajo favorecen conductas que expresan agotamiento emocional, pérdida de interés en el trabajo y actitudes indiferentes ante las personas a las cuales atiende, lo que ha sido llamado síndrome de burnout. La apreciable frecuencia en que estas manifestaciones son expresadas por los colegas motivó la realización de la investigación. Objetivo: Identificar la presencia del síndrome de burnout en un grupo de psiquiatras de la provincia de Pinar del Río. Métodos: Se realizó una investigación transversal mediante la aplicación del Maslach Burnout Inventory a 35 psiquiatras de la provincia Pinar del Río, se utilizó el método porcentual de cálculo. Resultados: Se identificaron 12 profesionales (34,2 por ciento) que se les diagnosticó síndrome de burnout o en riesgo, así como una baja incidencia de casos en los 10 primeros años de graduado como médico, no así en los psiquiatras en que sí se diagnosticó mayoritariamente en los primeros años de ejercer la especialidad. La relación mental estable presupone un mayor riesgo de padecer el síndrome o estar en riesgo. Conclusiones: El síndrome de burnout o el riesgo de padecerlo se diagnosticó en poco más de un tercio de los psiquiatras, la relativa alta frecuencia del síndrome en los que tienen pareja estable pudiera atribuirse a otros factores que gravitan junto a los vinculados al trabajo y no a este solamente(AU)
Introduction: Complaints frequently expressed by professionals from different specialties and related to the tensions produced by work may provoke behaviors consistent with emotional exhaustion, loss of interest in work and indifferent attitudes towards the people they attend. This has been called burnout syndrome. The appreciable frequency in which these manifestations are expressed by colleagues motivated this research. Objective: To identify the presence of burnout syndrome in a group of psychiatrists in Pinar del Río Province. Methods: A cross-sectional research was carried out through the application of the Maslach Burnout Inventory to 35 psychiatrists from Pinar del Río Province. The percentage method of calculation was used. Results: Twelve professionals (34.2 percent) were identified as diagnosed with burnout syndrome or at risk of it, together with a low incidence of cases in the first ten years after graduating as a medical doctor; but not among psychiatrists, in which it was diagnosed mostly in the first years of practicing the specialty. The stable mental relationship presupposes a greater risk for suffering from the syndrome or for being at risk. Conclusions: Burnout syndrome or the risk of suffering from was diagnosed in just over one third of psychiatrists. The relative high frequency of the syndrome in those with a stable partner could be attributed to other factors together with those related to work and not to this alone(AU)

El síndrome de burnout (SB) constituye una patología que se caracteriza por la manifestación de agotamiento emocional, despersonalización y sentimiento de pérdida de realización personal. Se realizó un estudio con el objetivo de describir el SB en estudiantes de enfermería de la Filial Cañar de la Universidad Católica de Cuenca, durante los años 2019 y 2020, el que tuvo un enfoque cuantitativo, observacional, de tipo descriptivo transversal, en el que participaron 192 estudiantes de la Carrera de Enfermería, Filial Cañar, Universidad Católica de Cuenca. Este fue ejecutado en el período 2019-2020, mediante la aplicación de la Escala Unidimensional del Burnout Estudiantil. el 97,4% de los involucrados tuvo algún nivel de SB. La prueba de chi cuadrado en las variables: repitencia de asignaturas, problemas de puntualidad y la ansiedad provocada por las obligaciones académicas en relación con el nivel de SB arrojó valores no significativos. El resto de los factores que permitieron valorar el nivel de SB se asociaron significativamente con este, con p valores menores que 0,05. Entre las variables sociodemográficas exploradas, solo la presencia de discapacidad se asoció significativamente con esta entidad. Se estableció dependencia entre el burnout académico y los siguientes factores explorados: ciclo que cursa, inconvenientes con docente o autoridad de la institución, sobrecarga de actividades, horarios, exceso de tareas, relación con los compañeros, competitividad entre compañeros, existencia de espacios recreativos y capacidad de realizar tareas por sí solo.
Burnout syndrome (BS) is a pathology characterized by the manifestation of emotional exhaus-tion, depersonalization, and a feeling of loss of personal fulfillment. This research aimed to describe BS in nursing students of the Catholic University of Cuenca in the city of Cañar, during the years 2019 and 2020. A quantitative, observational, descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out. 192 students from the Nursing Career of the Catholic University of Cuenca in the city of Cañar participated. This research was executed in the period 2019-2020 through the application of the Unidimensional Scale of Student Burnout. 97.4% of students had some level of BS. The chi-square test in the variables: repetition of subjects, punctuality problems and anxiety caused by academic obligations in relation to the level of SB, showed non-significant values. The rest of the factors that allowed assessing the level of BS were significantly associa-ted with it, with p values less than 0.05. Among the sociodemographic variables explored, only the presence of disability was significantly associated with this entity. Dependency was establi-shed between academic burnout and the following factors explored: current cycle, problems with the teacher or the institution's authority, overload of activities, schedules, excess tasks, relationship with classmates, competitiveness among classmates, existence of recreational spaces and ability to perform tasks by himself/herself

RESUMO Introdução: Burnout é um indicador de estresse crônico e o ponto médio entre estressores e suas conseqüências. Objetivo: Identificar a presença da Síndrome de Burnout em estomatologistas da Clínica Universitária de Especialidades Estomatológicas "Manuel Cedeño". Métodos: Um estudo transversal, descritivo, observacional foi realizado em 73 estomatologistas da Clínica Universitária de Especialidades Estomatológicas "Manuel Cedeño", de Bayamo, Granma, entre setembro e outubro de 2019. A escala de Maslach foi aplicada à Síndrome de Burnout e mensurada três subescalas: fadiga emocional, despersonalização e realização pessoal. Resultados: Os estomatologistas pesquisados apresentaram fadiga emocional baixa (57,53 porcento) e alta (26,02 porcento ); despersonalização foi baixa e média, com 49,31 porcento e 39,72 porcento , respectivamente; 84,93 porcento apresentaram alta conquista pessoal; 68 porcento dos estomatologistas não têm Síndrome de Burnout, apenas 32 porcento a têm. Conclusões: Os estomatologistas da Clínica Universitária de Especialidades Estomatológicas "Manuel Cedeño" apresentam baixo nível de fadiga emocional, baixo nível de despersonalização e alta realização pessoal, o que permitiu à maioria não apresentar a Síndrome de Burnout(AU)
RESUMEN Introducción: El Burnout es un indicador de estrés crónico y el punto medio entre los estresores y sus consecuencias. Objetivo: Identificar la presencia del síndrome de Burnout en estomatólogos de la Clínica Universitaria de Especialidades Estomatológicas "Manuel Cedeño". Métodos: Se realizó un estudio observacional, descriptivo, transversal en 73 estomatólogos de la Clínica Universitaria de Especialidades Estomatológicas "Manuel Cedeño", de Bayamo, Granma, entre septiembre y octubre de 2019. Se aplicó la escala de Maslach para el síndrome de Burnout y se midieron tres subescalas: cansancio emocional, despersonalización y realización personal. Resultados: Los estomatólogos encuestados mostraron un cansancio emocional bajo (57,53 por ciento) y alto (26,02 por ciento); la despersonalización fue baja (49,31 por ciento) y media (39,72 por ciento); el 84,93 por ciento presentó una alta realización personal. El 68 por ciento de los estomatólogos no padecen el síndrome de Burnout, solamente el 32 por ciento lo presenta. Conclusiones: Los estomatólogos de la Clínica Universitaria de Especialidades Estomatológicas "Manuel Cedeño" tienen un nivel bajo de cansancio emocional, bajo nivel de despersonalización y una alta realización personal. La mayoría de los participantes en el estudio no presentan síndrome de Burnout(AU)
ABSTRACT Introduction: Burnout is an indicator of chronic stress and the midpoint between stressors and their consequences. Objective: Identify the presence of burnout syndrome among dentists from Manuel Cedeño Dental Specialties University Clinic. Methods: A cross-sectional observational descriptive study was conducted of 73 dentists from Manuel Cedeño Dental Specialties University Clinic in Bayamo, Granma, in September and October 2019. The Maslach burnout scale was applied, and three subscales were measured: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal accomplishment. Results: Among the dentists surveyed, emotional exhaustion was low in 57.53 percent and high in 26.02 percent, depersonalization was low in 49.31 percent and medium in 39.72 percent, and personal accomplishment was high in 84.93 percent. 68 percent of the dentists do not suffer from burnout syndrome, whereas only 32 percent do. Conclusions: Dentists from Manuel Cedeño Dental Specialties University Clinic have low emotional exhaustion, low depersonalization and high personal accomplishment. Most of the participants in the study do not suffer from burnout syndrome(AU)

Objetivo: Determinar prevalencia y factores asociados al riesgo del síndrome de desgaste profesional (burnout) en médicos especialistas. Material y métodos: Estudio observacional, descriptivo y transversal, participaron 182 médicos especialistas. Se realizaron estadísticas descriptivas e inferenciales con SPSS 15.0 y Epi-infoV6.1. Resultados: Respuesta del 81,3%. Se detectó burnout en 49,5%. Diferencias significativas: edad menor de 40 años; Menos de 15 años con pareja estable; Que trabajara la pareja; Antigüedad profesional menor a 10 años. Se mostró una correlación negativa entre agotamiento emocional y despersonalización; positiva con la falta de realización personal en el trabajo en presencia del síndrome. Conclusión: el burnout es frecuente (49,5%), perfil de riesgo: ser mujer; <40 años de edad; sin pareja estable y <15 años con ella; que trabaja la pareja; sin hijos; especialidad quirúrgica; <10 años de antigüedad profesional y en el puesto actual de trabajo; laborar en jornada acumulada; con tipo de contratación definitiva, no tener otro trabajo; jornada mayor a 4 horas. Las subescalas en promedio están cerca de la normalidad. Agotamiento emocional y despersonalización, se comportan como el síndrome. Correlación negativa entre agotamiento emocional y despersonalización y positiva con la falta de realización personal con burnout(AU)
Objective: To determine the prevalence and risk factors associated with burnout syndrome in medical specialists. Material and methods: An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted among 182 participating medical specialists. Descriptive and inferential statistics were performed using SPSS 15.0 and EpiinfoV6.1. Results: We obtained a 81.3% response. Burnout was detected in 49.5% of respondents. Significant findings: respondents under 40 years of age; less than 15 years with a stable partner; had a working spouse; length of professional employment less than 10 years. We found a negative correlation between emotional exhaustion and depersonalization was evident, on the other hand, a positive correlation was evident between the lack of personal fulfillment at work and the presence of burnout. Conclusion: Burnout is frequent (49.5%).Risk factors include being a woman; being less than40 years old; having no stable partner and being together for less than15 years; that the couple works; childless; surgical specialty; less than 10 years of professional seniority and in the current job position; has a cumulative work day; having permanent recruitment, not having another job; and a work day greater than 4 hours. The subscales on average were close to normal. Emotional exhaustion and depersonalization mimic burnout. A negative correlation was evident between emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. A positive correlation was evident between the lack of personal fulfillment and burnout(AU)

RESUMO Objetivo analisar a relação entre a Síndrome de Burnout e as percepções acerca do clima de segurança entre profissionais intensivistas. Métodos estudo transversal, com 51 profissionais de saúde de hospital público do nordeste brasileiro. Aplicaram-se os instrumentos: Inventário de Burnout de Maslach, Questionário de Atitudes de Segurança e Questionário sociodemográfico. Adotaram-se estatísticas descritiva, analítica (teste de Spearman) e inferencial. Resultados na avaliação do Burnout, constatou-se nível alto de exaustão emocional (64,7%) e níveis baixos de despersonalização (74,5%) e realização profissional (56,8%). O clima de segurança foi considerado satisfatório, sendo o domínio Comportamentos seguros o que obteve maior média. Evidenciou-se correlação moderada entre as subescalas Percepção do estresse e Despersonalização. Conclusão constatou-se correlação entre clima de segurança e Burnout, nas dimensões Percepção do estresse e Despersonalização, sendo que esta segunda pode ser considerada consequência de fatores estressantes que distanciam o profissional do paciente.
ABSTRACT Objective to analyze the relationship between Burnout Syndrome and perceptions about safety climate among intensive care professionals. Methods a cross-sectional study with 51 health professionals from a public hospital in northeastern Brazil. The following instruments were applied: the Maslach Burnout Inventory, the Safety Attitudes Questionnaire, and a Sociodemographic questionnaire. Descriptive, analytical (Spearman's test) and inferential statistics were adopted. Results there was a high level of emotional exhaustion (64.7%) and low levels of depersonalization (74.5%) and personal accomplishment (56.8%) in the Burnout assessment. The safety climate was considered satisfactory, with the Safe Behaviors domain having the highest average. There was a moderate correlation between the Stress recognition and Depersonalization subscales. Conclusion there was a correlation between safety climate and Burnout in the Stress recognition and Depersonalization dimensions, with the latter being considered a consequence of stressful factors which distance professionals from patients.

Resumo Objetivo Analisar a relação entre estresse ocupacional e burnout em profissionais de saúde de unidades de perioperatório. Métodos Estudo transversal analítico, desenvolvido com 146 profissionais de saúde de unidades de perioperatório, representantes de diversas categorias. Utilizou-se os instrumentos Job Stress Scale e o Inventário Maslach de Burnout . Para a análise dos dados empregou-se estatística descritiva e inferencial. Resultados Quanto ao estresse ocupacional, constatou-se que 93(64,5%) profissionais de saúde encontravam-se com altas demandas psicológicas e 83(57,3%) estavam com baixo controle sobre o trabalho. Observou-se que 15(10,3%) profissionais apresentaram burnout. Houve associação estatisticamente significativa entre alta demanda psicológica e alto desgaste emocional (p=0,0001) e, entre alta demanda psicológica e alta despersonalização (p=0,007). Evidenciou-se associação estatisticamente significativa entre presença de burnout e altas demandas psicológicas (p=0,049). Conclusão Profissionais desgastados emocionalmente e que se afastam dos colegas possuem altas demandas psicológicas. À medida que as demandas psicológicas aumentam, também aumentam o desgaste emocional e a despersonalização. Por outro lado, quando a demanda psicológica é baixa, o profissional não está em burnout .
Resumen Objetivo Analizar la relación entre el estrés laboral y burnout en profesionales de la salud de unidades de perioperatorio. Métodos Estudio transversal analítico, realizado con 146 profesionales de la salud de unidades de perioperatorio, representantes de diferentes categorías. Se utilizaron los instrumentos Job Stress Scale y el Cuestionario Maslach de Burnout . Para analizar los datos se aplicó estadística descriptiva e inferencial. Resultados Respecto al estrés laboral, se constató que 93 (64,5%) profesionales de la salud se encontraban con altas demandas psicológicas y 83 (57,3%) tenían un bajo control sobre el trabajo. Se observó que 15 (10,3%) profesionales presentaron burnout. Hubo relación estadísticamente significativa entre la alta demanda psicológica y el alto desgaste emocional (p=0,0001), y entre la alta demanda psicológica y la alta despersonalización (p=0,007). Se constató relación estadísticamente significativa entre presencia de burnout y altas demandas psicológicas (p=0,049). Conclusión Profesionales desgastados emocionalmente y que se alejan de los compañeros tienen altas demandas psicológicas. A medida que las demandas psicológicas aumentan, también aumenta el desgaste emocional y la despersonalización. Por otro lado, cuando la demanda psicológica es baja, el profesional no está en estado de burnout .
Abstract Objective To analyze the relationship between occupational stress and burnout in healthcare professionals working in perioperative units. Methods Analytical, cross-sectional study developed with 146 health professionals from various categories working in perioperative units. The Job Stress Scale and the Maslach Burnout Inventory were used. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for data analysis. Results Regarding occupational stress, 93 (64.5%) health professionals had high psychological demands and 83 (57.3%) had low control over work. Fifteen (10.3%) professionals were burnout. There was a statistically significant association between high psychological demand and high emotional exhaustion (p=0.0001) and between high psychological demand and high depersonalization (p=0.007). There was a statistically significant association between the presence of burnout and high psychological demands (p=0.049). Conclusion Emotionally strained professionals who move away from colleagues have high psychological demands. As psychological demands increase, so does emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. On the other hand, when the psychological demand is low, the professional is not experiencing burnout.

Background: The occurrence of burnout amongst African health professionals has been widely anticipated, but there is a dearth of published data, especially amongst doctors. Burnout has been reported to be as high as 53% amongst doctors in the United States. If not detected, it can result in prescription errors, work-related accidents, substance abuse and depression. Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of burnout and its associated factors amongst a sample of physicians in Ghana. Setting: This study was conducted in Kumasi amongst physicians attending a conference organised by the West African College of Physicians, Ghana Chapter. Method: A cross-sectional study. Of the 90 physicians who registered for the conference, 60 responded to a self-administered Maslach Burnout Inventory questionnaire. Data were analysed descriptively and inferentially using STATA® version 14. Results: Approximately 52% of respondents had been in medical practice for 1019 years (mean 15.4 years). All the major medical specialties were represented. Internal Medicine had the highest number of participants (48.3%). With respect to the components of burnout, 5.5% of respondents experienced depersonalisation, 7.8% had a lack of personal achievement and 10.8% experienced emotional exhaustion. The association between burnout and age, sex, years of practice and clinical specialty was not found to be statistically significant. Conclusion: This pilot study has shown burnout to be common amongst physicians in Ghana. It is recommended that further studies are conducted, involving a larger cross-section of doctors in various parts of Africa

Introducción. El Síndrome de Burnout afecta mundialmente a más de 100,000,000 personas, con prevalencia entre 47 y 76% en médicos residentes. El objetivo de este trabajo fue determinar la relación entre el Síndrome de Burnout y los niveles de proteína C-reactiva ultrasensible en médicos residentes de un hospital universitario en Caracas, Venezuela. Metodología. Estudio transversal y descriptivo. El instrumento de recolección de datos, así como el test Maslach Burnout Inventory, fueron enviados en formato electrónico. Posteriormente, se seleccionó dos submuestras, a quienes se les determinó la concentración de proteína C-reactiva ultrasensible Resultados. La muestra inicial fue de 174 residentes, de los cuales 57 (32.8%) presentaban Burnout. Los residentes positivos para la presencia del síndrome tenían niveles más elevados de proteína C-reactiva ultrasensible (>0.50mg/dl) (Ñ=0.001) con respecto al grupo sin Burnout. Igualmente, los residentes de género femenino (Ñ=0.046), aquellos que dormían menos de 8 horas al día (Ñ=0.032) y que estaban sometidos a estrés familiar (Ñ=0.036) presentaron una asociación estadísticamente significativa para desarrollar el síndrome de bornout. Finalmente, se evidenció cómo los residentes de menor edad tenían mayores puntajes en la subescala despersonalización (p=0.036). Discusión. El estrés crónico (entre ellos el Síndrome de Bornout) puede activar de manera continua ejes fisiológicos estresores (hipotálamo-hipófisis- suprarrenal y simpático-adrenal); conllevando a la producción de citosinas y proteínas de fase aguda (como proteína C-reactiva ultrasensible), promoviendo un estado proinflamatorio en el individuo y el desarrollo de patologías crónicas. Conclusiones. El síndrome de bornout y las variables sociodemográficas/laborales representan una condición de estrés crónico que pueden asociarse entre sí y conducir al desarrollo de distintas enfermedades a largo plazo. Introduction. Burnout Syndrome affects over 100,000,000 people worldwide, with a prevalence of between 47% and 76% in resident physicians. This project's objective is to determine the relationship between Burnout Syndrome and ultrasensitive C-reactive protein in resident physicians in a university hospital in Caracas, Venezuela. Methodology. Cross-sectional and descriptive study. The data collection tool, as well as Maslach Burnout Inventory test, were sent digitally. Two sub-samples were subsequently collected, whose concentration of us ultrasensitive C-reactive protein was determined. Results. The initial sample was 174 residents, of which 57 (32.8%) had Burnout. Residents who tested positive for the syndrome had higher levels of us-CRP (>0.50mg/dl) (Ñ=0.001) with respect to the group without Burnout. Moreover, female residents (Ñ=0.046), those who slept less than 8 hours every day (Ñ=0.032) and those who were subject to family stress (Ñ=0.036) demonstrated a statistically significant association with developing Burnout Syndrome. Finally, it was evident how younger residents had higher scores on the Depersonalization Subscale (p=0.036). Discussion. Chronic stress (among which is burnout syndrome) can continuously activate physiological stress axes (hypothalamic-pituitary-suprarenal and sympathetic-adrenal), which leads to producing cytosines and acute-phase proteins (such as ultrasensitive C-reactive protein), promoting a proinflammatory state in individuals and the development of chronic pathologies. Conclusion. Burnout Syndrome and sociodemographic/work variables represent a chronic stress condition and can be related to each other. They may lead to developing various long-term diseases. Introdução. A Síndrome de Burnout afeta mais de 100 milhões de pessoas em todo o mundo, com uma prevalência de 47-76% em médicos residentes. O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar a relação entre a síndrome de burnout e os níveis de proteína C-reativa ultrassensível em médicos residentes de um hospital universitário em Caracas, Venezuela. Metodologia. Trata-se de um estudo transversal e descritivo. O instrumento de coleta de dados, assim como o teste Maslach Burnout Inventory, foram enviados em formato eletrônico. Posteriormente, foram selecionadas duas subamostras, nas quais foi determinada a concentração de níveis de proteína C-reativa. Resultados. A amostra inicial foi de 174 residentes, dos quais 57 (32.8%) apresentaram Burnout. Os residentes positivos para a presença da síndrome apresentaram níveis mais elevados de níveis de proteína C-reativa (> 0.50mg/dl) (Ñ = 0.001) em comparação com o grupo sem Burnout. Da mesma forma, residentes do sexo feminino (Ñ = 0.046), aqueles que dormiam menos de 8 horas por dia (Ñ = 0.032) e aqueles que foram submetidos a estresse familiar (Ñ = 0.036) apresentaram uma associação estatisticamente significativa para o desenvolvimento da síndrome de burnou. Por fim, evidenciou-se que os residentes mais jovens apresentaram escores mais elevados na subescala de despersonalização (p = 0.036). Discussão. O estresse crônico (incluindo a síndrome de burnout) pode ativar continuamente os eixos fisiológicos dos estressores (hipotálamo-hipófise-suprarrenal e simpático-adrenal), levando à produção de citocinas e proteínas de fase aguda (como níveis de proteína C-reativa), promovendo um estado pró-inflamatório no indivíduo e o desenvolvimento de patologias crônicas. Conclusão. A síndrome de burnout e as variáveis sociodemográficas/laborais representam uma condição de estresse crônico que podem estar associadas entre si e levar ao desenvolvimento de diferentes doenças a longo prazo. Resumen El objetivo fue determinar la relación de las Habilidades Sociales y el Síndrome de Burnout en Odontólogos del Ministerio de Salud. Se utilizó el método deductivo, con alcance relacional. La muestra estuvo constituida por 60 odontólogos que laboran en el Ministerio de Salud de la Región Apurímac, mediante un muestreo probabilístico aleatorio estratificado por género. La técnica de recolección de la información fue por conglomerados. La prueba de hipótesis fue contrastada mediante el estadístico paramétrico de correlación de Pearson, para analizar las dos variables medidas en intervalo. El resultado obtenido fue a mayores habilidades sociales, menor es el Síndrome de Burnout en los Odontólogos del Ministerio de Salud, se obtuvo una correlación de Pearson de -0,696 con un factor de determinación de 0,675. Se concluye que existe asociación inversamente proporcional entre las Habilidades Sociales y el Síndrome de Burnout en profesionales de la odontología. Por otro lado las habilidades sociales están asociadas inversamente proporcional a la dimensión cansancio o agotamiento emocional, así como también a la dimensión despersonalización del Síndrome de Burnout; por otro lado las habilidades sociales no están asociadas con la dimensión relación personal del Síndrome de Burnout.
Abstract The objective was to determine the relationship of Social Skills and Burnout Syndrome in Dentists of the Ministry of Health. The deductive method was used, with relational scope. The sample consisted of 60 Dentists working in the Ministry of Health of the Apurimac Region, by means of a random probabilistic sampling stratified by gender. The information gathering technique was by clusters. The hypothesis test was checked by means of the Pearson parametric correlation statistic, to analyze the two variables measured in interval. The result was higher social skills, the lower the Burnout Syndrome in the Dentists of the Ministry of Health, a Pearson correlation of -0.696 was obtained with a determination factor of 0.675. It is concluded that there is an inversely proportional association between Social Skills and Burnout Syndrome in dentistry professionals. On the other hand, social skills are associated inversely proportional to the fatigue or emotional exhaustion dimension, as well as to the depersonalization dimension of Burnout Syndrome; on the other hand social skills are not associated with the personal relationship dimension of Burnout Syndrome

Resumo: O que poderia causar um sentimento de estranheza maior, ao ser humano, do que seu inconsciente que lhe mostra os limites de sua capacidade de ver e dizer? Esse artigo procura demonstrar que o estrangeiro não está apenas inscrito no olhar, um olhar que não se restringe ao visível, mas que se encontra no âmago do sujeito. Sua irrupção, a cada evento ocasional, inclusive ao mudar de país, confronta o sujeito com o que o divide e se torna um enigma para ele. Esse enigma representa uma verdadeira prova que mobiliza a subjetividade do indivíduo e a necessidade de um recurso singular para lidar com ele. Essa prova não revela necessariamente uma psicopatologia. Ela pode dar origem à inventividade, como mostram as experiências artísticas e iniciáticas. Para embasar a sua abordagem, a autora toma, como ponto de apoio e como horizonte, os conhecimentos da psicanálise, principalmente a contribuição freudiana.
ABSTRACT: What is more foreign to us than our own unconscious, showing us a limit to what can be seen and said? The author shows that not only is the foreign inscribed in the gaze, a gaze that cannot be reduced to the visible, but that it lies at the very heart of the human subject. Its irruption at various occasions, including when travelling between different countries, confronts us with what divides us and remains an enigma. This challenging experience mobilises our subjectivity, calling for a unique solution. Far from always being a sign of pathology, it can lead to inventive action, as shown by artistic and rite-of-passage experiences. The author's approach relies on what is transmitted to us by psychoanalysis, primarily highlighting the work of Freud.

ABSTRACT Background: Burnout syndrome is a work-related psychological response, characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and low professional accomplishment. Objective: The study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of burnout syndrome in neurologists in the State of Paraná, Brazil, dividing them into stroke neurologists and non-stroke neurologists. Methods: We performed a crosssectional observational study, with a quantitative approach, based on the online Maslach Burnout Inventory - Human Services Survey questionnaire. Results: A total of 74 neurologists were evaluated, 44.6% of whom had burnout syndrome, predominantly among females and stroke neurologists. Both the stroke neurologist and non-stroke neurologist groups had medium degrees of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization; however, while stroke neurologists had high professional accomplishment, non-stroke neurologists had mean-to-low scores of professional accomplishment. There was a proportional relationship between age and emotional exhaustion. Female neurologists also reported lower professional accomplishment levels. Conclusion: Burnout is prevalent among the neurologists of Paraná, corroborating the results previously reported in other studies. There seems to be no significant difference between those neurologists who work in the emergency stroke care setting compared with those who don't.
RESUMO Introdução: A síndrome de burnout é uma resposta psicológica relacionada à profissão, caracterizada por exaustão emocional, despersonalização e redução da realização pessoal. Objetivos: Objetivamos avaliar a prevalência da síndrome de burnout em neurologistas do Paraná, distribuindo a atuação entre neurologistas vasculares e não-vasculares. Métodos: Estudo observacional, transversal, com abordagem quantitativa, realizado a partir do questionário online autoaplicável Maslach Burnout Inventory - Human Services Survey. Resultados: 74 neurologistas foram avaliados, desses 44.6% apresentaram critérios para síndrome de burnout, predominando entre mulheres e stroke neurologists. Ambos os grupos apresentaram médios graus de exaustão emocional e despersonalização. Enquanto os neurologistas vasculares apresentaram alto grau de realização pessoal, os não-vasculares apresentaram médio grau. Houve relação proporcional entre idade e exaustão emocional. Neurologistas do gênero feminino mostraram menores níveis de realização pessoal. Conclusão: A síndrome de burnout é frequente nos neurologistas do Paraná, compatível com a literatura que sugere a especialidade como uma das mais susceptíveis. Não obtivemos contudo, diferenças entre os neurologistas que lidam ou não com a emergência vascular.

The World Health Organization has included burnout in the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases as an occupational phenomenon that involves “factors influencing health status or contact with health services.” Burnout is a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It manifests as exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced job satisfaction. In the United States, more than 50% of physicians have reported burnout, and their suicide rate is more than twice as high as that of the general population. Burnout in physicians is linked with increased irritability, depression, and medical errors in practice, and decreased job satisfaction, work efficacy, and concentration. Most physicians have pointed to administrative burdens outside of clinical practice as the major cause of burnout. To prevent physician burnout, regular evaluations of stress and self-awareness of one's burnout status are essential. Each physician should make proactive lifestyle changes to reduce job-related stress, such as regular exercise, seeking help, ensuring enough rest, and fostering good interpersonal relationships. Awareness and prevention of burnout are important not only for physicians' mental health, but also for patients' care.

OBJECTIVES: Dentists and dental hygienists undergo high levels of stress due to various factors and the burnout of health-care personnel is very important in the context of personal and social problems. Therefore, empirical research reflecting the social, cultural, and special circumstances of the medical environment is necessary. Here, we explore the causes and outcomes of burnout in dentists and dental hygienists and present ways to prevent burnout. METHODS: A cross-sectional research design was used to measure burnout of 141 dentists and 61 dental hygienists. A structured questionnaire containing the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) was administered from May to June, 2018. Data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0, descriptive statistics, t-test, Mann-Whitney test, Kruskall-Wallis test, and multiple regression analysis. RESULTS: Each participant's MBI was measured in three aspects (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment). The MBI scores of dentists with regards to their emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment were 24.8%, 34%, and 48.2%, respectively. Alternatively the scores of dental hygienists were 45.9%, 44.3% and 52.5%, respectively, for the same parameters. While the factors affecting the burnout of dentists and dental hygienists were different, it had a negative impact on the professional performance of both. CONCLUSIONS: According to the results of this study, Korean dentists and dental hygienists experience high levels of work-related burnouts. This can have adverse impacts on their personal health and that of their patients. Therefore, stress management is necessary in dentists and dental hygienists.
