ABSTRACT

Promoting an adequate comprehension of primary prevention in oral health regarding adolescents is an essential task in pediatric dentistry. These patients constitute a risk group, and they need of specialized dental care. However, prevention measures directed to maintain the oral health at this group, have not been promoted as a priority. Therefore, oral health professionals, who are responsible for adolescent care, should be interested in the importance of ensuring that this group has optimal management. This article establishes guidelines involving oral health in adolescents (AU)

ABSTRACT

Background: it has been suggested that nursing-staff' should be educated in maintaining the oral health (OH) of institutionalised elder people. Objective: this work aimed for measuring the effectiveness of a 3-hour oral health training-programme (OHTP) provided to nursing-staff by assessing the residents' OH gains. Materials and methods: this was a one-year longitudinal-controlled-interventional study evaluated via a nursing-staff' questionnaire and residents' oral examinations. Managers of 30 nursing homes in Granada, Spain, were contacted and offered three oral examinations for their residents and an OHTP for the nursing-staff; nine of them consequently agreed to participate for all consenting people. 269 residents were examined at baseline and 12 months. After the baseline examination, the nursing homes were randomised into an intervention or control group; the OHTP was then carried out on the intervention group. Results: the residents' denture hygiene (p=0.03) and wearing of dentures at night (p=0.003) improved significantly in the intervention group; caries prevalence increased in both groups. Conclusions: the OHTP was effective for improving caregivers' knowledge and OH care routines, but the improvements were not enough to improve residents' overall OH.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Dental caries, despite having declined in recent years, presents groups considered polarized with highest rate of the disease, among other reasons due to the lack of access to health services. EXPERIENCE REPORT: Description of a dental care experience (preventive, educational and restorative) in children aged 0 to 15 years in a riverside community in the state of Pará. The first visit to the community (February 2014) lasted 3 days and was carried out as an epidemiological survey according to World Health Organization criteria. Educational and preventive activities besides dental treatments were provided to this community. At the second visit (February 2015), again with duration of three days, oral health from this community was reevaluated. Data from the two analyzed periods, distant one year between each analysis, were compared. A total of 34 children aged 1 to 6 years according to the dmft index and 54 children/adolescents aged 7 to 15 years according to the dmft/DMFT index were examined. Statistically significant differences were found in aspects: caries (p=0.03), missing teeth (p=0.04), and filled teeth (p=0.01). CONCLUSION: Access to health services associated with educational and preventive activities showed positive results in the visited riverside community.

ABSTRACT

Dental education comprises a variety of competences and fine motor skills that must be acquired by students not only in the classroom but also in preclinical laboratories and dental clinics. In Peru, the average duration of dental undergraduate programs is five years. While it is true that curriculums vary from one school to another, preclinical and clinical activities are usually initiated during the third and fifth semesters, respectively. While the curriculums of Peruvian dental school programs tend to emphasize the importance of know-how and clinical training, undergraduate students are also trained in complementary skills that enable them to deepen their understanding of the profession beyond the dental chair. ABSTRACT

Disability or developmental disorder is a pathology that frequently appears in child population. In some cases, several functions are severely affected: social interaction, language, behaviour, cognitive and motor function. These characteristics are taken as a risk factors for their oral health. An observational study was performed by means of a self-made survey in different early stimulation and rehabilitation centers from the city of La Plata. The survey was conducted with the purpose of improving children's future life through their oral health and to analyze family perception as regards the need of dental care in children with neurological disorders; to identify the reasons for seeking dental care as well as the reasons for not doing so and to acknowledge feeding and hygiene habits. A total of 120 surveys were carried out, for boys and girls, between 3 and 12 years. 66% presented a diagnosis of General Developmental Disorder, regarding the dental consultation 56,6% had not done so far. Regarding the reason for the dental consultation, 34% did it for prevention, 31% for pain. They did not perform the dental consultation 53% for lack of time, 24% for fear and 23% for lack of information. 44% of the respondents stated that they sometimes brush their children's teeth, 37% do it every day, 13% do not sanitize their teeth, and 6% sanitize themselves. As far as the knowledge of the drinks and foods that damage the teeth are concerned, 86% reported knowing, and 13% did not; This information 33% obtained it from the dentist. A large proportion of the children with neurological disorders are for the first time in the dental consultation due to pain, often delay the first visit to the dentist due to lack of time, since these children are in rehabilitation and stimulation treatment from very early ages, And in many cases do not receive the referral in a timely manner. The promotion and prevention of oral health in children with disabilities is of vital importance for the whole family group. Therefore, it is important to educate parents about the importance of prevention and to emphasize the health care at home (AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Few studies have evaluated oral health promotion (OHP) programs in nursery schools. This research aimed to assess whether there were differences in oral health knowledge between preschoolers and carers who received or did not receive an OHP program in nursery schools. A post-intervention observational study involving 5-6 years-old preschoolers and 169 carers was carried out in 10 nursery schools. The preschoolers in the OHP program group (N=93) received information on oral health and recreational activities relating to oral health, whereas in the control group (N=90), no OHP activity was provided. Children's age and sex, carer's age, child kinship, education and family income were collected via questionnaire. Children and carer's oral health knowledge scores were assessed through structured interviews. Independent variables were compared between groups by t-test, Chi-square and Mann-Whitney test. The association between children and carer's oral health knowledge and the OHP program group was tested using multivariate Poisson regression. Children's oral health knowledge was significantly associated with the OHP program group. Carer's oral health knowledge did not differ between intervention and control groups. Children attending nursery schools provided with OHP programs had greater oral health knowledge than those attending nursery schools without OHP activities.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate the impact of three different education methods on the oral hygiene levels of school children using clinical and theoretical findings. Material and Methods: 144 children (72 males and 72 females), whose ages ranged between 8-13, were divided into 12 equal experimental groups according to their ages and gender. They were all considered to have poor hygiene. Only one out of the three different education methods (brochure, model or video) was applied to each group. The percentage change in PI, GI, BOP and theoretical test points from the baseline to the 6th months were evaluated. The data was statistically analysed by using Kolmogorov- Smirnov and One-way ANOVA tests. Results: Reduction in PI, GI and BOP scores was significantly greater (p<0.05) in the video applied groups compared to the brochure groups in the age of 8-10 groups for both genders and in 11-13-year-old males. In 11- 13-year-old females, all methods showed similar results (p>0.05). There was no significant difference in test points in 8-10 and 11-13-year-old female groups (p>0.05), whereas a significant increase in test points was observed in the video and model applied groups compared to the brochure groups in 8-10 and 11-13-year-old male groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: It may be more helpful and effective for children to get the oral hygiene education using the visual methods, especially for those under the age of ten.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Pregnancy is a transient physiological state which brings about different hormonal changes in a woman's body. These effects are generalized and there are various oral changes as well. There are a number of especially important alterations in the periodontal conditions within the oral cavity. These changes have important implications as they have been known to cause adverse pregnancy outcomes. Better knowledge about these scenarios among health care professionals and women would go a long way toward avoiding or minimizing these adverse outcomes. Health education is an important tool in creating awareness among pregnant women regarding improvement of their oral health. Awareness among the health professionals and good inter-departmental collaboration would help toward a more efficient treatment of these pregnancy related conditions.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Abstract Study on the educational practices of Oral Health Teams, members of the Primary Health Care in Salvador, Bahia state, Brazil. The research aimed to analyze the tactics used by Oral Health Teams for community involvement in health education programs and discuss pedagogical practices (knowledge and techniques) developed in educational activities. Qualitative approach was carried out by using 22 semi-structured interviews involving seven dentists, seven oral health assistants, six managers of health facilities and two district managers. Thematic content analysis guided the outcomes discussion. The educational model was centered on dentist's knowledge, revealed in prescriptive and bureaucratic nature of the activities in the community. Such educational practices tend not to encourage the users' autonomy, making them, in a sense, hostage to the hegemonic model of care focused on disease.
