Resumo Fundamento A Doença de Chagas (DC) representa um grave problema de saúde pública na América Latina. O Benznidazol (BNZ) é utilizado para o tratamento DC e, apesar do seu amplo uso, poucas informações estão disponíveis sobre sua toxicidade e mecanismos das Reações Adversas ao Medicamento (RAM). Objetivos Identificar e classificar as reações adversas clínicas e laboratoriais ocasionadas pelo uso do BNZ quanto à sua causalidade e gravidade. Métodos Estudo de coorte prospectivo realizado no período de janeiro de 2018 a dezembro de 2021. O acompanhamento do tratamento incluiu consultas e análises laboratoriais antes, 30 e 60 dias após o início do tratamento. As RAM foram classificadas quanto à causalidade e gravidade. Na análise estatística o nível de significância adotado foi p<0,05. Resultados Participaram do estudo 40 pacientes com DC crônica, observou-se alta prevalência de RAM com um total de 161 em 30 (90%) pacientes. Destas, 104 (64,6%) foram classificadas como possíveis e 57 (35,4%) como prováveis. As reações foram classificadas em moderadas e leves. Dos 40 pacientes, nove (22,5%) suspenderam o tratamento. As RAM associadas à interrupção e intervenções foram as que afetaram o sistema dermatológico, sistema nervoso central e periférico ou que culminaram em ageusia. Após 30 dias de tratamento, alterações hematológicas e bioquímicas leves foram observadas como linfopenia. Conclusão Apesar do elevado percentual de RAM, muitos pacientes foram capazes de completar o tratamento, o que se atribui ao êxito da estratégia de acompanhamento com intervenções de tratamento sintomático juntamente ao aconselhamento, levando à compreensão da sintomatologia e manutenção do tratamento.
Abstract Background Chagas disease (CD) is a serious public health problem in Latin America. Benznidazole (BNZ) is used for the treatment of CD and, despite its wide use, little information is available about its toxicity and mechanisms of adverse drug reactions (ADR). Objectives To identify and classify clinical and laboratory adverse reactions caused by BNZ in terms of causality and severity. Methods Prospective cohort study from January 2018 to December 2021. Treatment follow-up included visits and biochemical tests (complete blood count, liver and kidney function tests) before, during and after treatment. ADR were classified according to causality and severity. In the statistical analysis, the significance level was set at p<0.05. Results Forty patients with chronic CD were included. A high prevalence of ADR was observed 161 ADR in 30 patients [90%]; of these, 104 (64.6%) were classified as possible and 57 (35.4%) as probable. The ADR were classified as moderate and mild. Of the 40 patients, nine (22.5%) discontinued treatment. ADR associated with treatment discontinuation and interventions were those that affected the dermatological system, central and peripheral nervous system and sense organs such as ageusia. Mild hematological and biochemical changes such as lymphopenia were observed after 30 days of treatment. Conclusion Many patients were able to complete the treatment even with ADR, which can be attributed to the successful follow-up strategy with symptomatic treatment and counseling, leading to patient's awareness of symptoms and treatment adherence.

Terahertz (THz) waves, occupying a unique position bridging microwave and infrared wavelengths, exhibit promising potential across diverse domains, particularly in medicine. With attributes such as non-ionizing nature and notable resolution capabilities, THz waves offer avenues for non-invasive medical applications. In cancer diagnosis, THz spectroscopy emerges as a pivotal tool for qualitative and quantitative analysis of biomarkers, enabling swift and accurate differentiation of substances based on molecular structure. Despite challenges such as limited penetration depth in tissue, THz imaging proves invaluable in discriminating cancerous tissues from normal ones during surgery. In this paper we have summarized recent research results on practical implementation of THz waves in medicine. Recent advancements in in vivo imaging showcase promising results, although challenges persist in human-based studies due to tissue complexity. Integration of advanced algorithms enhances the accuracy of cancerous tissue identification. Additionally, THz spectroscopy finds versatile applications in pharmaceuticals and life sciences, offering insights into molecular interactions critical for drug efficacy and understanding protein conformations. Further advancements in THz systems, including enhanced light sources and detectors, are crucial to propel biomedical research forward. Establishment of a comprehensive THz spectrum database will augment existing data, emphasizing the potential of THz waves to revolutionize medical diagnostics and treatment modalities.

Managing the treatment of fungal infections, in healthcare facilities is extremely important as drug resistance continues to rise. It's crucial to have programs that oversee the use of antibiotics which can help reduce the emergence of resistance. Rapid diagnostic tools like polymerase chain reaction and next generation sequencing (PCR and NGS) are helpful in targeting treatment plans. Implementing rigorous infection control protocols can effectively reduce the transmission of infections, within healthcare facilities. Collaborative efforts between specialists ensure customized treatment plans that address resistance profiles. Combating evolving drug resistance involves approaches such as combination therapy and immunotherapies. Educating healthcare workers and patients about infection prevention and control is essential. Surveillance and epidemiology play a role in tracking resistance patterns, which in turn guide interventions. International cooperation is crucial due to travel patterns. Continuous research and innovation are essential for management providing insights into treatment effectiveness and mechanisms of resistance. The clinical implications of drug resistance such as increased severity, treatment failures and limited options underscore the need, for an approach. In conclusion, it is imperative to have clinical management strategies to tackle the challenges posed by emerging drug pathogens while safeguarding patient outcomes and public health.

Objective To investigate the distribution characteristics of serum sIgE antibodies against four allergenic protein components of egg white in children with egg allergy,and then clarify the clinical application value of single component-resolved diagnostics of egg allergy.Methods Serum samples from 197 children with egg allergy were collected.The levels of serum sIgE antibodies against four major allergenic protein components of egg white,including ovomucin,ovalbumin,ovotransferrin,and lysozyme,were detected by the light-excited chemiluminescence assay(LiCA),and the distribution characteristics of sIgE antibodies were analyzed.Results The positive rates of serum sIgE antibodies against ovalbumin,ovomucin,ovotransferrin,and lysozyme in 197 chlidren with egg allergy were 77.16%(152/197),70.56%(139/197),35.02%(69/197),and 18.27%(36/197),respectively.The positive rate of serum sIgE antibody against both ovomucin and ovalbumin was 30.45%.There was a weak correlation between the levels of sIgE antibodies against egg and the cumulative levels of sIgE antibodies against four allergenic protein components(r=0.266 8,P<0.05).There were signifi-cant individual differences in the levels of serum sIgE antibodies against four allergenic protein components of egg white in the children with egg allergy.Conclusion There is individual heterogeneity in the levels of serum sIgE antibodies against four components of egg white in the children with egg allergy.The detection of sIgE antibodies against egg white components can distinguish different forms of egg allergies,which is of great value for the accurate diagnosis and precise desensitization of children's egg allergy.

Currently, the management of domestic laboratory developed test (LDT) is still in the exploration stage, and new plans and ideas need to be investigated that are suitable for our national development. By analyzing encountered issues, combining the actual needs of the government, healthcare reform, and patients, this article proposes that "promoting healthy development of LDT projects and focusing on the organic combination of patients′ interest protection and innovation support" is an important direction for LDT management, around which the new idea for LDT project management is proposed, that is, LDT management model targeting product registration. The core of this management model is to target product registration and to ensure low service fees for patients and continuous real-time data monitoring. Benefit and risk analysis demonstrate that this management model can to a larger extent balance the realistic demands of patients, medical institutions, in vitro diagnostics companies, and government management departments, which benefits promoting the perfection and development of LDT projects in our country.

Laboratory medicine is an important subject of auxiliary clinical diagnosis, and the postgraduate education of clinical laboratory diagnostics is the key to cultivating high-end laboratory talents. This study analyses the differences in the postgraduate education model of clinical laboratory diagnostics between China and Australia from the four aspects of academic degree system, curriculum setting, teaching methods, and autonomous learning ability training and discusses the postgraduate education reform of laboratory medicine in China. With reference to the advanced experience of countries with a well-developed education system, the education reform in China can improve the comprehensive quality of postgraduate student in laboratory medicine and enhance the medical level of China.

In the context of "New Era" and "New Medicine", the teaching team of laboratory diagnostics proposed a new teaching method of PDCA (Plan, Do, Check, Action) cycle to innovate the instructional design and implementation of laboratory diagnosis on the base of traditional teaching model. Through optimizing the curriculum system, integrating superior resources, taking full advantage of information technology, mobilizing the virtual simulation laboratory, implementing moral education and multiple comprehensive evaluation results, the self-learning enthusiasm, innovation and development ability of students were improved significantly, accompanied with high humanistic care spirit. Moreover, the enthusiasm of participating in scientific research activities and professional competitions was enhanced obviously. Therefore, we believe that the PDCA cycle, with notable successes, deserves high promotion value and wide application.

Exposure to ionizing radiation intervenes in genomic stability and gene expression,resulting in the disruption of normal metabolic processes in cells and organs by causing complex biolog-ical responses.Altered genomic variations,gene expression and metabolite concentrations in blood or tissue samples reflect systemic radiation damage.With the application of new techniques and exten-sive study on the mechanisms for ionizing radiation damage,related indicators such as chromosomal variation,gene expression,lipid and metabolism are being recognized and promise to be the markers for early diagnosis and prognosis of radiation exposure.Therefore,this article reviews recent progress in and potential applications of biomarkers related to ionizing radiation injury.

Abstract Background The last five decades have seen a surge in viral outbreaks, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions like Brazil, where endemic arboviruses such as Dengue (DENV), Zika (ZIKV), and Chikungunya (CHIKV) pose significant threats. However, current diagnostic strategies exhibit limitations, leading to gaps in infection screening, arbovirus differential diagnoses, DENV serotyping, and life-long infection tracking. This deficiency impedes critical information availability regarding an individual's current infection and past infection history, disease risk assessment, vaccination needs, and policy formulation. Additionally, the availability of point-of-care diagnostics and knowledge regarding immune profiles at the time of infection are crucial considerations. Objectives This review underscores the urgent need to strengthen diagnostic methods for arboviruses in Brazil and emphasizes the importance of data collection to inform public health policies for improved diagnostics, surveillance, and policy formulation. Methods We evaluated the diagnostic landscape for arboviral infections in Brazil, focusing on tailored, validated methods. We assessed diagnostic methods available for sensitivity and specificity metrics in the context of Brazil. Results Our review identifies high-sensitivity, high-specificity diagnostic methods for arboviruses and co-infections. Grifols transcription-mediated amplification assays are recommended for DENV, CHIKV, and ZIKV screening, while IgG/IgM ELISA assays outperform Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs). The Triplex real-time RT-PCR assay is recommended for molecular screening due to its sensitivity and specificity. Conclusion Enhanced diagnostic methods, on-going screening, and tracking are urgently needed in Brazil to capture the complex landscape of arboviral infections in the country. Recommendations include nationwide arbovirus differential diagnosis for DENV, ZIKV, and CHIKV, along with increased DENV serotyping, and lifelong infection tracking to combat enduring viral threats and reduce severe presentations.

Abstract Objective This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the effectiveness of saliva as a non-invasive diagnostic marker for oral cancer. Despite progress in oral cancer diagnosis and prognosis, the 5-year survival rate remains low due to the resistance to treatment and delayed diagnosis, which can be attributed to various factors including tobacco and alcohol consumption, genetic damage, and human papillomavirus (HPV). The potential use of saliva as an easily accessible non-invasive screening and diagnostic method arises from its direct contact with the lesion site. Methodology Data for this study were gathered via a comprehensive literature evaluation using search engines such as the PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and SciFinder. Results Identifying salivary biomarkers shows potential to transform oral cancer diagnostics by offering a reliable alternative to the traditional invasive methods. Saliva is an abundant reservoir for both cell-bound and cell-free organic and inorganic constituents. Thus, saliva is an appropriate field for research in proteomics, genomics, metagenomics, and metabolomics. Conclusion This review provides a comprehensive elucidation of salivary biomarkers and their function in non-invasive oral cancer diagnosis, demonstrating their potential to enhance patient outcomes and reduce the impact of this devastating disease.

Abstract This study aimed to assess the influence of smoking on the subgingival metatranscriptomic profile of young patients affected by stage III/IV and generalized periodontal disease. Methodology In total, six young patients, both smokers and non-smokers (n=3/group), who were affected by periodontitis were chosen. The STROBE (Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology) guidelines for case-control reporting were followed. Periodontal clinical measurements and subgingival biofilm samples were collected. RNA was extracted from the biofilm and sequenced via Illumina HiSeq. Differential expression analysis used Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment, and differentially expressed genes were identified using the Sleuth package in R, with a statistical cutoff of ≤0.05. Results This study found 3351 KEGGs in the subgingival biofilm of both groups. Smoking habits altered the functional behavior of subgingival biofilm, resulting in 304 differentially expressed KEGGs between groups. Moreover, seven pathways were modulated: glycan degradation, galactose metabolism, glycosaminoglycan degradation, oxidative phosphorylation, peptidoglycan biosynthesis, butanoate metabolism, and glycosphingolipid biosynthesis. Smoking also altered antibiotic resistance gene levels in subgingival biofilm by significantly overexpressing genes related to beta-lactamase, permeability, antibiotic efflux pumps, and antibiotic-resistant synthetases. Conclusion Due to the limitations of a small sample size, our data suggest that smoking may influence the functional behavior of subgingival biofilm, modifying pathways that negatively impact the behavior of subgingival biofilm, which may lead to a more virulent community.

Obstetric anal sphincter injury affects about 5.7% of primiparous women who deliver vaginally. Perineal injury during childbirth is a common event with important morbidity associated with third-and-fourth degree perineal tears (also referred to as obstetric anal sphincter injuries -OASIS). As there was a lack of consistency in the classification of a partial anal sphincter injury, with up to 33% of consultant obstetricians classifying a complete or partial tear of the EAS as a second-degree tear. We have proposed simple, digital diagrammatic drawings to visually represent all degrees (grades) of OASIS based on the WHO OASIS classification. (AU)

Background & objectives: Sepsis, including neonatal sepsis, remains a prevalent cause of morbidity and mortality in low- and middle-income countries such as India, representing 85 per cent of all sepsis-related deaths globally. Early diagnosis and timely initiation of treatment is challenging due to non-specific clinical manifestations and non-availability of rapid diagnostic tests. There is an urgent need for affordable diagnostics with fast turnaround time catering to the needs of end-users. Target product profiles (TPPs) have been found instrumental in developing ‘fit-for-use’ diagnostics, thus reducing the time taken to facilitate development and improving diagnosis. Hitherto, no such guidance or criteria has been defined for rapid diagnostics for sepsis/neonatal sepsis. We propose an innovative approach for developing the diagnostics for sepsis screening and diagnosis which can be utilized by diagnostic developers in the country. Methods: Three-round Delphi method, including two online surveys and one virtual consultation, was adopted to define criteria for minimum and optimum attributes of TPPs and build consensus on characteristics. Expert panel (n=23) included infectious disease physicians, public health specialists, clinical microbiologists, virologists, researchers/scientists and technology experts/innovators. Results: We present a three-component product profile for sepsis diagnosis, (i) screening with high sensitivity, (ii) detection of aetiological agent, and (iii) profiling of antimicrobial susceptibility/resistance, in adults and neonates with an option of testing different considerations. An agreement of >75 per cent was achieved for all TPP characteristics by Delphi. These TPPs are tailored to the Indian healthcare settings and can also be extrapolated to other resource-constraint and high-disease burden settings.

Objective To rapidly screen patients with novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) infection including asymptomatic ones. Method Established a rapid detection test kit, and evaluated analytical and clinical performance of it. Result The minimum limit of detection of the reagent was 9.75×102 TCID50/mL; there was no cross-reaction and interference in the high-concentration samples of 29 common respiratory pathogens tested. The diagnostic sensitivity of clinical samples was 98.56%, specificity was 99.00%, and the total coincidence rate was 98.85%; the consistency test Kappa value is 0.974 5. The stratified analysis of positive samples with different Ct values showed that the coincidence rate within each stratum was greater than 95%. Conclusion This COVID-19 antigen test kit with excellent detection performance, fast detection speed, and portable operation. It can be used as a supplementary method for existing nucleic acid detection methods for early screening of new coronavirus.

Cancer of unknown primary (CUP) is a heterogeneous tumor type that has been diagnosed as a metastatic tumor by pathological examination, but the primary tumor cannot be identified through comprehensive clinical examination. The incidence of CUP accounts for approximately 1%–2% of all tumors. CUP progresses rapidly and has a short course. The treatment and prognosis of patients with CUP are closely linked to the primary site. In clinical settings, identifying the primary tumor remains challenging. Scholars have focused on improving the detection rate. Novel technologies, such as gene expression profiling, high-throughput sequencing, epigenetics, and liquid biopsy, have been successively applied to identify the primary tumor of CUP accurately, sensitively and specifically. With the guidance of molecular diagnosis, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and combination therapy will usher in the era of precision treatment for CUP, which may become a typical example for individualized therapy.

In the current scientific research training of the academic postgraduate students majoring in clinical laboratory diagnostics, there are many problems including insufficient scientific research level, poor scientific research environment and so on. Based on many years of experience on cultivating postgraduate students and starting from the five factors of 4M1E (man, machine, material, method and environment) method, a scientific strategy is proposed, and then the scientific research ability and level of academic postgraduate students majoring in clinical laboratory diagnostics could be improved by exerting its own self-motivation, strengthening the guidance of tutors, improving training tools, heightening scientific thinking, and enhancing environmental friendliness of scientific research.

Objective:To investigate the application effect of case-based learning (CBL) combined with flipped classroom in the teaching of experimental diagnostics in the integrated course of Diagnosis and Treatment Fundamentals. Methods:The cluster random sampling method was used to select the class of 2019 in the eight-year program and the class of 2020 in the five-year program, with the major of stomatology in Air Force Medical University. The 24 students in the observation group received CBL combined flipped classroom, and the 37 students in the control group received traditional teaching. The two groups were compared in terms of theoretical assessment score, classroom assessment score, comprehensive ability, self-learning ability, and degree of satisfaction with teaching. SPSS 22.0 was used for the t-test. Results:The observation group had a significantly higher theoretical assessment score than the control group [(74.88±3.46) vs. (71.89±4.45), P<0.05]. The observation group had significantly better scores of practical skill assessment than the control group ( P<0.05). Compared with the control group, the observation group had significantly better scores of comprehensive ability and self-learning ability ( P<0.05). The observation group had significantly better scores of satisfaction with teaching than the control group ( P<0.05). Conclusion:The application of CBL combined with flipped classroom in the teaching of experimental diagnostics in the integrated course of Diagnosis and Treatment Fundamentals can improve theoretical knowledge, practical skills, comprehensive quality, and satisfaction with teaching among students, and therefore, it holds promise for application in teaching.

BACKGROUND: The emergence of COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the supply chain and stock of medicines and drugs across the globe. Tracer drugs are essential medicines that address the population's priority health problems. Thus, this study aimed to assess availability of tracer drugs and basic diagnostics at public primary health care facilities in Ethiopia. METHODS: Facility based cross-sectional study was employed in four regions and one city administration. The primary health care units (PHCUs) were purposively selected in consultation with respective regional health bureaus. Finally, 16 hospitals, 92 health centers and 344 health posts were included. This study adopted WHO's tool that was being used to rapidly assess the capacity of health facilities to maintain the provision of essential health services during the COVID-19. Descriptive analysis was done using frequency and percentage, and results were presented. RESULTS: The overall mean availability of tracer drugs in PHCUs was 77.6%. Only 2.8% of PHCUs have all tracer drugs. The mean availability of basic diagnostic at national level was 86.6% in PHUs except health posts where it was less. Health facilities with all basic diagnostic services was 53.7%. Of the total 344 health posts assessed, 71% were providing diagnostic testing for malaria using either laboratory equipment or rapid diagnostic test (RDT) while 43% provide urine test for the pregnancy. Conclusion: This study shows availability of all tracer drugs in PHCUs in Ethiopia was extremely low. There was regional variation in availability of tracer drugs and basic diagnostics. It is very crucial to increase availability of tracer drugs and diagnostics. Drugs and diagnostic materials should be supplied according to the capacity and location of health facilities.

Introduction. L'efficacité du traitement antirétroviral dans la restauration immunitaire dépend fortement du stade de l'infection et du taux de lymphocyte TCD4 au moment de l'introduction du traitement. Nous avons évalué le taux de lymphocytes TCD4 à la découverte de la séropositivité au VIH pour caractériser le niveau d'infection de chaque patient. Matériel et méthodes. C'est une étude transversale et descriptive qui s'est déroulée dans le laboratoire de virologie de la faculté de médecine de Libreville. Nous avons analysé les données de la cohorte DERIRADO. Résultats. Nous avons inclus 133 patients. L'âge médian était de 45 ans (Q1-Q3 :ï37 ; 52ï). La médiane de LTCD4 était de 388 cellules/mm3 (Q1-Q3 : ï250 ; 556ï). Le diagnostic était avancé chez 112 (84%) patients. Conclusion. La découverte de la séropositivité au Virus de l'Immunodéficience Humaine est faite à un stade d'immunodépression avancé chez la majorité des patients. Ce constat relève la nécessité de mettre en route les politiques de sensibilisation pour cibler les populations clés et amener le plus grand nombre au dépistage de l'infection par le Virus de l'Immunodéficience Humaine si l'on veut diminuer la courbe de transmission.
Introduction. The effectiveness of antiretroviral therapy in immune restoration largely depends on the stage of infection and the TCD4 lymphocyte count at the time of treatment initiation. We evaluated the rate of TCD4 lymphocytes at the discovery of HIV seropositivity to characterize the level of infection of each patient. Methods. This was a cross sectional descriptive and analytic study whose setting was the laboratory of virology of the faculty of medicine of Libreville. Our data source was DERIRADO cohort. Results. We included 133 patients. The median age was 45 (Q1- Q3:37;52). The median LTCD4 was 388 cells/mm3 (Q1-Q3: 250; 556). The diagnosis was advanced in 112 (84%) patients. Conclusion. The diagnosis of seropositivity to the Human Immunodeficiency Virus is made at a stage of immunosuppression in the majority of patients. This highlights the need to implement sensitization policies to target key populations and bring as many people as possible to screening in order to reduce the transmission curve

Introducción. Las infecciones de transmisión sexual (ITS) son y seguirán siendo un serio problema de salud pública en todo el mundo según los datos de la OMS, con el agravante que la mayoría de los casos son asintomáticos y, además, no existe otro reservorio distinto al humano. El diagnóstico se puede realizar con pruebas tradicionales y moleculares, estas últimas incluyen la reacción en cadena de la polimerasa (PCR), de las cuales existen varios tipos, entre ellas, la PCR múltiple que tiene la capacidad de detectar ITS polimicrobianas a partir de una sola muestra. El objetivo de este estudio fue establecer cuáles fueron las infecciones de transmisión sexual más frecuentes en diferentes grupos de pacientes, así como determinar la utilidad del uso de la técnica de PCR múltiple en el diagnóstico de las ITS. Metodología. Se trata de un estudio observacional de corte transversal realizado entre los años 2021 y 2022 con pacientes que acudieron al servicio de diagnóstico del Laboratorio Clínico VID por sospecha de ITS. Las muestras recolectadas fueron evaluadas utilizando una prueba comercial basada en la técnica de PCR múltiple e hibridación. Las muestras procesadas fueron: orina e hisopados de endocérvix, uretra, recto, faringe y úlceras. Resultados. Se estudiaron 1.027 pacientes, de estos, 228 (22,2 %) fueron positivos para diferentes agentes de trasmisión sexual, distribuidos así: 50 (21,9 %) mujeres, 129 (56,6 %) hombres heterosexuales y 49 (21,5 %) hombres que tenían sexo con hombres (HSH). La edad promedio de las mujeres fue 30 años, y la de ambos grupos de hombres fue 36 años. Los microorganismos más frecuentemente identificados en mujeres fueron: C. trachomatis (A-K) en 28,6 %, seguido de virus herpes simplex tipo 2 (VHS-2) en 26,8 % y N. gonorrhoeae en 17,9 %. En hombres heterosexuales fueron C. trachomatis (A-K) en 37,5 %, N. gonorrhoeae en 21,5 % y VHS-2 en 18,7 %. En HSH fueron C. trachomatis (L1-L3) en 32,7 %, seguido de N. gonorrhoeae en 27,6 %, y de C. trachomatis (A-K) y VHS-2, ambos en 13,8 %. En 11 hombres heterosexuales, 8 HSH y en 6 mujeres, se identificó infección polimicrobiana. Conclusiones. C. trachomatis (A-K) fue el microorganismo más prevalente causante de ITS, seguido de N. gonorrhoeae en ambos grupos de hombres, y de VHS-2 en las mujeres, muy similar a lo reportado a nivel mundial. La prueba de PCR múltiple permite la detección de infecciones polimicrobianas comúnmente asociadas a ITS y el diagnóstico es preciso y confiable, incluso en pacientes asintomáticos
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are and will continue to be a serious public health problem throughout the world according to WHO data, with the aggravating factor that most cases are asymptomatic and, furthermore, there is no other reservoir other than humans. The diagnosis can be made with traditional and molecular tests, the latter include the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), of which there are several types, among them, multiplex PCR that has the capacity to detect polymicrobial STIs from a single sample. The objective of this study was to establish which were the most frequent sexually transmitted infections in different groups of patients, as well as to determine the usefulness of the multiplex PCR technique in the diagnosis of STIs. Methodology. This is an observational, cross-sectional study carried out between 2021 and 2022 with patients who attended the VID Clinical Laboratory for suspected STIs. The collected samples were evaluated using a commercial test based on the multiplex PCR technique and hybridization. The samples processed were: urine and swabs from endocervix, urethra, rectum, pharynx, and ulcers. Results. The study included 1,027 patients, of these, 228 (22.2%) were positive for different sexually transmitted agents, distributed as follows: 50 (21.9%) women, 129 (56.6%) heterosexual men and 49 (21.5%) men who had sex with men (MSM). The average age of the women was 30 years, and that of both groups of men was 36 years. The microorganisms most frequently identified in women were: C. trachomatis (A-K) in 28.6%, followed by herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) in 26.8% and N. gonorrhoeae in 17.9%. In heterosexual men they were C. trachomatis (A-K) in 37.5%, N. gonorrhoeae in 21.5% and HSV-2 in 18.7%. In MSM they were C. trachomatis (L1-L3) in 32.7%, followed by N. gonorrhoeae in 27.6%, and C. trachomatis (A-K) and HSV-2, both in 13.8%. Polymicrobial infection was identified in 11 heterosexual men, 8 MSM, and 6 women. Conclusions. C. trachomatis (A-K) was the most prevalent STI-causing microorganism, followed by N. gonorrhoeae in both groups of men, and HSV-2 in women, very similar to that reported worldwide. The multiplex PCR test allows the detection of polymicrobial infections commonly associated with STIs and the diagnosis is accurate and reliable, even in asymptomatic patients
