RÉSUMÉ

We report a case of 59-year-old male who experienced sharp pain in his arm and elbow after lifting a heavy object. History and physical examination raised suspicion for biceps rupture. Magnetic resonance imaging determined chronic tear of superfi cial fi bers of the long head of biceps in the distal arm. Surgical repair was performed for this tear by excising ruptured long head of biceps. Traumatic rupture of the biceps tendon is rare. When rupture does occur, it usually involves the long head of the proximal insertion. Rupture of the proximal biceps tendon occurs in 90-97% of all biceps ruptures and almost exclusively involves the long head. Distal biceps tendon rupture only occurs in about 3% of all biceps tendon injuries. Th e outcome was reasonably well with this rare injury pattern and even after excision of biceps 80% of his premorbid function was restored. He has good strength and is able to participate fully in his work.

Traditional herbal drugs are wonderful remedies for the treatment of various devastating disorders. Recently, there has been a change in a universal fashion from synthetic to herbal medicine, which is like homecoming to nature. In the present situation, the dietary changes lead to liver disorders like non-alcoholic and alcoholic fatty liver disorders. India is one of the world’s twelve leading biodiversity centers with the presence of over 45,000 diverse plant species, out of this about 15,000-20,000 plants have good medicinal and therapeutic properties of which only about 7,000-7,500 are being used by traditional practitioners. Hepatic injury accounts for 3.5%-9.5% of all adverse drug reaction reports and up to 14.7% of fatal adverse reaction. Hepatic disorders/toxicity can occur by several mechanisms like Cytochrome P450 activation, lipid peroxidation, Induction of nitric acid synthase, mitochondrial dysfunction, activation of pro-inflammatory mediators and Bile acid-induced liver cell death. There are a number of drugs or therapies available for the treatment of hepatic disorders, but still there is a need for the novel drug discovery which can target multiple disease pathways. Traditional medicines have exhaustive ancient and scientific literature for curing a lot of life threatening disorders with less or no side effects. There are number of scientifically proved hepatoprotective herbal drugs like Andrographis paniculata, Ocimum sanctum, Solanum nigrum, Silybum marianum, Phyllanthus niruri etc. which are widely used for the treatment of liver disorders. However, there are various herbal plants and phytoconstituents, which are found to be hepatotoxic like Lanata camra Linn, Symphytum officinale, Azadirachta indica, Amantia phalloides etc. This review emphasizes on both sides of the coin like crucial aspects of phytoconstituents with reference to their hepatoprotective as well as hepatotoxic effects linked to use of herbal preparations.

Developing a successful treatment strategy for neuropathic pain has remained a challenge among researcher and clinicians. Various animal models have been employed to understand the pathogenic mechanism of neuropathic pain in experimental animals. The present study was designed to explore the possible nitric oxide mechanism in the protective effect of melatonin against chronic constriction injury (CCI) of sciatic nerve in rats. Following chronic constriction injury, various behavioral tests (thermal hyperalgesia, cold allodynia) and biochemical parameters (lipid peroxidation, reduced glutathione, catalase, and nitrite) were assessed in sciatic nerves. Drugs were administered for 21 consecutive days from the day of surgery. CCI significantly caused thermal hyperalgesia, cold allodynia and oxidative damage. Chronic administration of melatonin (2.5 or 5 mg/kg, ip) significantly attenuated hyperalgesia, cold allodynia and oxidative damage in sciatic nerves as compared to CCI group. Further, L-NAME (5 mg/kg) pretreatment with sub-effective dose of melatonin (2.5 mg/kg, ip) significantly potentiated melatonin’s protective effect which was significant as compared to their individual effect per se. However, L-arginine (100 mg/kg) pretreatment with melatonin (2.5 mg/kg, ip) significantly reversed its protective effects. Results of the present study suggest the involvement of nitric oxide pathway in the protective effect of melatonin against CCI-induced behavioral and biochemical alterations in rats.

Sleep deprivation for 72 h caused anxiety like behavior, weight loss, impaired locomotor activity and oxidative damage as indicated by increase in lipid peroxidation, nitrite level and depletion of reduced glutathione and catalase activity in sleep deprived mice brain. Treatment with melatonin (5 and 10 mg/kg, ip) significantly improved locomotor activity, weight loss and antianxiety effect as compared to control (sleep deprived). Biochemically, melatonin treatment significantly restored depleted reduced glutathione, catalase activity, attenuated lipid peroxidation and nitrite level as compared to control (72 h sleep-deprived) animals. A combination of flumazenil (0.5 mg/kg, ip) and picrotoxin (0.5 mg/kg, ip) with lower dose of melatonin (5 mg/kg, ip) significantly antagonized the protective effect of melatonin. However, combination of muscimol (0.05 mg/kg, ip) with melatonin (5 mg/kg, ip) potentiated protective effect of melatonin as compared to their effect per se. The results suggest that melatonin may produce its protective effect by involving GABAergic system against sleep deprivation-induced anxiety like behavior and related oxidative damage.

Stress is an aversive stimulus which disturbs physiological homeostasis and is reflected on a variety of biological systems. The present study was designed to investigate the nitric oxide mechanism in neuroprotective effect of trazodone and citalopram against acute immobilization-induced behavioral and biochemical alteration in mice. Mice were immobilized for a 6 h. Acute immobilization stress caused anxiety, hyperalgesia, impaired locomotor activity and oxidative damage. Pre-treatment with trazodone and citalopram significantly reversed immobilized stress-induced behavioral and biochemical alterations. L-arginine, pretreatment with trazodone or citalopram significantly reversed their protective effects. However, L-NAME or methylene blue pretreatment with trazodone or citalopram significantly potentiated their protective effects alone. Results suggest the involvement of nitric oxide pathways in the protective effect of trazodone and citalopram against immobilization stress induced behavioral and biochemical alterations.

We report the occurrence of cytomixis in wild populations of Himalayan poppy (Meconopsis aculeata Royle),which is considered to be an important and threatened medicinal plant growing in the high hills of the Himalayas. The impact of cytomixis on meiotic behaviour, reduced pollen viability and heterogeneous-sized pollen grains was also studied. Cytological studies in the seven wild populations from the high hills of Himachal Pradesh revealed that all the Himalayan populations exist uniformly at the tetraploid level (2n=56) on x=14. The phenomenon of chromatin transfer among the proximate pollen mother cells (PMCs) in six populations caused various meiotic abnormalities. Chromatin transfer also resulted in the formation of coenocytes, aneuploid, polyploid and anucleated PMCs. Among individuals that showed chromatin transfer, chromosome stickiness and interbivalent connections were frequently observed in some PMCs. The phenomenon of cytomixis in the species seems to be directly under genetic control; it affects the meiotic course considerably and results in reduced pollen viability.
