Nevus comedonicus (NC, acneiform nevus) is a rare variant of adnexal hamartoma, which is clinically characterized as confluent clusters of dilated follicular orifices resembling comedones. NC usually occurs unilaterally along the line of Blaschko and presents at birth or develops during childhood. A 66-year-old man presented with a 6-month history of multiple skin-colored to brownish papules resembling comedones on both the upper and lower eyelids. The patient did not complain of ophthalmologic or neurologic symptoms. Skin punch biopsy revealed dilated follicular openings filled with eosinophilic keratinous material and lymphocytic infiltration. Based on clinical and histopathologic findings, a diagnosis of late-onset bilateral NC of the eyelids was reached.

Interproximal contact loss (ICL) is the most frequent complication in partially edentulous patients treated with implant-supported prostheses. However, in most cases, ICL occurs between the implant prosthesis and the natural tooth due to the movement of the natural tooth. There are several causes of ICL that occur between an implant prosthesis and a natural tooth. There are only a few reported cases of ICL occurring between implant prostheses, and explaining the causes of ICL between implant prostheses and natural teeth is challenging. This clinical report describes cases of ICL between implant prostheses and discusses its causes and countermeasures.

Tixagevimab/cilgavimab is a monoclonal antibody used to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 among immunocompromised hosts and maintained neutralizing activity against early omicron variants. Omicron BN.1 became a dominant circulating strain in Korea early 2023, but its susceptibility to tixagevimab/cilgavimab is unclear. We conducted plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT) against BN.1 in a prospective cohort (14 patients and 30 specimens). BN.1 PRNT was conducted for one- and three-months after tixagevimab/ cilgavimab administration and the average PRNT ND 50 of each point was lower than the positive cut-off value of 20 (12.9 ± 4.5 and 13.2 ± 4.2, respectively, P = 0.825). In the paired analyses, tixagevimab/cilgavimab-administered sera could not actively neutralize BN.1 (PRNT ND 50 11.5 ± 2.9, P = 0.001), compared with the reserved activity against BA.5 (ND 50 310.5 ± 180.4). Unlike virus-like particle assay, tixagevimab/cilgavimab was not active against BN.1 in neutralizing assay, and would not be effective in the present predominance of BA.2.75 sublineages.

Background@#Many studies have evaluated the prevalence of different reasons for retraction in samples of retraction notices. We aimed to perform a systematic review of such empirical studies of retraction causes. @*Methods@#The PubMed/MEDLINE database and the Embase database were searched in June 2023. Eligible studies were those containing sufficient data on the reasons for retraction across samples of examined retracted notices. @*Results@#A 11,181 potentially eligible items were identified, and 43 studies of retractions were included in this systematic review. Studies limited to retraction notices of a specific subspecialty or country, journal/publication type are emerging since 2015. We noticed that the reasons for retraction are becoming more specific and more diverse. In a meta-analysis of 17 studies focused on different subspecialties, misconduct was responsible for 60% (95% confidence interval [CI], 53–67%) of all retractions while error and publication issues contributed to 17% (95% CI, 12–22%) and 9% (95% CI, 6–13%), respectively. The end year of the retraction period in all included studies and the proportion of misconduct presented a weak positive association (coefficient = 1.3% per year, P = 0.002). @*Conclusion@#Misconduct seems to be the most frequently recorded reason for retraction across empirical analyses of retraction notices, but other reasons are not negligible. Greater specificity of causes and standardization is needed in retraction notices.

Objective@#This study was undertaken to identify the effect of Oral Motor Facilitation Technique (OMFT) on the drooling control ability of children afflicted with Cerebral Palsy (CP). @*Methods@#Totally, 21 CP children with drooling problems participated in the study. OMFT was provided for 16 weeks (30 minutes, 1 session a week, 16 sessions). The drooling control ability was assessed by determining the severity and frequency using the Drooling Severity and Frequency Scale (DSFS) before, at 8 weeks, and 16 weeks after OMFT administration. The effectiveness of OMFT was analyzed at the time intervals using the Friedman test. Post hoc analyses were conducted by the Wilcoxon signed rank test and Kruskal Wallis test. @*Results@#Drooling control ability showed significant improvement after 16 weeks of OMFT. Although the severity of drooling significantly increased after 8 weeks, the frequency was unchanged. Our results indicate that OMFT is a useful oral motor treatment protocol to manage the drooling control ability of children with CP. We recommend at least 8 weeks of OMFT administration. @*Conclusion@#Drooling is an important problem in dysphagia. Clinicians need to show more importance in controlling drooling, and a comprehensive oral motor treatment like OMFT should be considered for children afflicted with CP.

Improvements in the mechanical and optical properties of ceramic materials and the development of dentin adhesives have resulted in more successful results in anterior teeth restorations. Among them, porcelain laminate veneer (PLV) can achieve aesthetic improvement in a conservative way while minimizing tooth reduction. A female patient in her 20s visited for aesthetic improvement of the maxillary anterior teeth. The patient's chief complaint was aesthetic improvement of tooth discoloration after trauma and endodontic treatment, and a PLV restoration was decided to reflect the patient’s demand for minimal tooth reduction. IPS e.max Press, a lithium disilicate-based ceramic with high light transmittance and high strength, was chosen for porcelain laminate veneer. Inner surface of the veneer was treated with liner in order to block discoloration of the abutment teeth while maintaining translucency in the incisal edge. The patient was satisfied with the aesthetic result.
RÉSUMÉ
Lithium disilicate gradation block that have been recently introduced and used in dental clinics have superior light transmittance compared to zirconia-based restorations, so that when applied to anterior restorations, better esthetic results are expected. In addition, it has the advantage that the flexural strength is sufficient and chemical bonding with resin cement is possible. However, high transparency could be a disadvantage in the restoration of abutment teeth with severe discoloration, and various methods have been tried to compensate for this. In this study, in the restoration of central incisors with severe discoloration of the abutment, the inner surface of the crown made of lithium disilicate-based polychromatic blocks was treated with a liner to block the discoloration, and thus aesthetically satisfactory results were obtained.

Background@#Dermatophyte infection is one of the most common skin diseases affecting the skin, hair, and nails. Despite widespread recognition of the disease, missing details and misperceptions are commonplace in the general population. @*Objective@#This study aimed to investigate the public perception and behavior regarding dermatophytosis of the hands and feet. @*Methods@#This results from an online survey conducted between July 2022 and August 2022. The survey included 1,000 Korean participants aged 20 to 69 years, of whom 60% experienced symptoms of tinea pedis or onychomycosis. The questionnaire focused on the awareness and personal experience of tinea pedis and perception of the treatment of dermatophytosis. @*Results@#Of the 1,000 participants, nearly 80% regarded tinea pedis as a common skin condition by which anyone can be affected. Furthermore, 88.4% had heard that the treatment of tinea pedis could be harmful, causing skin rash (60.4%) and worsening liver function (48.5%). Among 896 participants who noticed suspicious symptoms, 81.2% did not visit the clinic because it was not severe (50.1%) and seemed easily manageable (25.7%). Of the respondents, 84.4% preferred to meet dermatologists rather than non-dermatologist doctors regarding skin diseases, mainly because of trust in experts and belief in a faster cure. @*Conclusion@#Providing accurate and detailed information via online media, educational campaigns, and medical papers can rectify misconceptions and improve patient appliance, contributing to public skin health.

Background@#Topical recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rhEGF) is effective in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers, surgical wounds, burns, and scars. Binding of EGF to EGF receptors results in cell proliferation and differentiation. @*Objective@#This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of topical rhEGF ointment compared with that of topical mupirocin in healing herpes zoster (HZ) lesions. @*Methods@#Thirty patients diagnosed with typical HZ were recruited in August, 2018. The rats were randomly divided into two groups: topical mupirocin and topical rhEGF ointment. HZ lesions were evaluated using the Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS) at the initial visit, 1st, 2nd, and 4th weeks. @*Results@#The total number of recruited patients (n=30) included males (n=16, 53.3%) and females (n=14, 46.7%) with a mean age of 58.2. The proportion of patients with a 50% reduction in the VSS score (VSS 50) at 2nd week was significantly higher in the rhEGF group (33.0% vs. 72.0%, respectively, p=0.035). The complete resolution rate (VSS=0, 1) at 4th week was also higher in the rhEGF group (17.5% vs. 50.0%, p=0.03). @*Conclusion@#Topical rhEGF showed a more rapid treatment response and anti-scarring effect than topical mupirocin in patients with HZ lesions.

Stroke is a major cause of death and long-term disability. Chlorogenic acid is a phenolic compound with a potent neuroprotective effect. γ-enolase is a phosphopyruvate hydratase found in mature neurons and plays an important role in the neuronal survival. This study investigated whether chlorogenic acid regulates the expression of γ-enolase during cerebral ischemia. Middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) was performed to indcue cerebral ischemia. Adult male rats were used and chlorogenic acid (30 mg/kg) or phosphate buffered saline (PBS) was injected intraperitoneally 2 hours after MCAO surgery. Cerebral cortical tissues were collected 24 hours after MCAO surgery. Our proteomic approach identified the reduction of γ-enolase caused by MCAO damage and the mitigation of this reduction by chlorogenic acid treatment. Results of reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and Western blot analyses showed decrease in γ-enolase expression in PBS-treated MCAO group. However, chlorogenic acid treatment attenuated this decrease. Results of immunofluorescence staining showed the change of γ-enolase by chlorogenic acid treatment. These results demonstrated that chlorogenic acid regulates the γ-enolase expression during MCAO-induced ischemia. Therefore, we suggest that chlorogenic acid mediates the neuroprotective function by regulating the γ-enolase expression in cerebral ischemia and may be used as a therapeutic agent for brain diseases including stroke.

The occlusal treatment including prosthetic treatment should be considered when the pathologic symptom was observed with the excessive discrepancy between the centric relation occlusion (CRO) and the maximum intercuspal position (MIP). Through careful diagnosis, the malocclusion and interarch relationship can be analyzed, and occlusal adjustment, restorative treatment, orthodontic therapy, or orthognathic surgery can be performed depending on the degree of disharmony. The patient in this case report complained the unstable occlusion and loss of masticatory function that had been occurring for several years. At the time of the visit, the patient showed severe occlusal disharmony, with only the upper right second molar contacting the lower jaw at the maximum intercuspal position. Based on the analysis of the occlusion, it was difficult to solve the problem with just occlusal adjustment or restorative treatment. In addition, the patient had the skeletal class II malocclusion between the upper and lower jaws. Therefore, for resolving the severe skeletal class II malocclusion, pre- and post-orthodontic treatment, bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO) was performed. After that, the occlusal adjustment was performed for stable occlusion, and the missing teeth area was restored with dental implants. During the follow-up period, a periodic follow-up visits and additional occlusal adjustments were performed to achieve a stable centric occlusion and harmonious anterior and lateral guidance. As a result, the final prosthodontic treatment was completed, and the patient’s masticatory function was restored.

In complete denture fabrication, accurate preliminary impressions are crucial for obtaining an accurate final impression. However, it can be challenging in cases of atypical arch shapes. This case report compares diagnostic casts made with a stock tray and an intraoral scanner (IOS) in a patient with an atypical arch shape.A 58-year-old edentulous male patient with long, narrow, atypical arches was referred to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department for complete denture fabrication. Compared to the diagnostic cast obtained using IOS with adequately captured anatomical parameters, the primary model obtained using a stock tray showed prominent overextended flanges on the labial and buccal sides of the maxillary arch and less prominent overextended flanges in the mandibular arch with pressure spots in the posterior palatal seal area. The custom tray fabricated from such a model required additional adjustment resulting in increased chair time during the final impression procedure.

Purpose@#This retrospective study aimed to determine the number of times the ultrasound-guided attenuation parameter (UGAP) should be measured during the evaluation of hepatic steatosis. @*Methods@#Patients with suspected nonalcoholic fatty liver disease who underwent two UGAP repetition protocols (six-repetition [UGAP_6] and 12-repetition [UGAP_12]) and measurement of the controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) using transient elastography between October 2020 and June 2021 were enrolled. The mean attenuation coefficient (AC), interquartile range (IQR)/median, and coefficient of variance (CV) of the two repetition protocols were compared using the paired t test. Moreover, the diagnostic performances of UGAP_6 and UGAP_12 were compared using the area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curve, considering the CAP value as a reference standard. @*Results@#The study included 160 patients (100 men; mean age, 50.9 years). There were no significant differences between UGAP_6 and UGAP_12 (0.731±0.116 dB/cm/MHz vs. 0.734±0.113 dB/cm/MHz, P=0.156) and mean CV (7.6±0.3% vs. 8.0±0.3%, P=0.062). However, the mean IQR/median of UGAP_6 was significantly lower than that of UGAP_12 (8.9%±6.0% vs. 9.8%±5.2%, P=0.012). In diagnosing the hepatic steatosis stage, UGAP_6 and UGAP_12 yielded comparable AUROCs (≥S1, 0.908 vs. 0.897, P=0.466; ≥S2, 0.883 vs. 0.897, P=0.126; S3, 0.832 vs. 0.834, P=0.799). @*Conclusion@#UGAP had high diagnostic performance in diagnosing hepatic steatosis, regardless of the number of repetitions (six repetitions vs. 12 repetitions), with maintained reliability. Therefore, six UGAP measurements seem sufficient for evaluating hepatic steatosis using UGAP.

Orofacial dystonia is a neuromotor disorder that causes irregular or repetitive movements of the face, lips, tongue, and jaw involuntarily, also called tic disorder. Edentulous patients with these symptoms experience functional and aesthetic problems, including difficulty using complete dentures, speech and swallowing difficulties, and orofacial pain. In this case, for a patient with orofacial dystonia who experienced complete edentulism at a relatively young age, restorative treatment was performed with a maxillary complete denture with bilateral posterior zirconia occlusal surfaces and a mandibular implant-supported fixed prosthesis, and continuous smile training was performed. The aim was to improve the aesthetics of facial muscles. As a result of the treatment, the patient was very satisfied with not only improved chewing function and aesthetics, but also regained psychological stability and was able to lead a normal daily life, so we would like to report this.

Invasive or non-invasive reduction of fractures could be conducted as treatments of traumatic maxillofacial bone fractures. But when suboptimal reduction or malunion of maxillofacial bone fracture occurs, malocclusion could occur as a result of the lost relationship of the mandible and midface. This malocclusion is called post-traumatic malocclusion and orthognathic surgery, orthodontic treatment, selective grinding and prosthetic reconstruction are suggested as treatments for post-traumatic malocclusion after securement of stable TMJ. Stable TMJ is essential for occlusal rehabilitation to prevent occlusal change and relapse of malocclusion. Centric relation and adapted centric posture are suggested as start points of occlusal rehabilitation because they are most stable TMJ position. This case report presents a case in which post-traumatic malocclusion occurred after reduction of panfacial fracture. To rehabilitate full mouth occlusion, selective grinding and prosthetic reconstruction of implant supported fixed prostheses were conducted in centric relation and showed satisfying results in functional and occlusal aspects.

The contagious skin infestation scabies, is caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis. These microscopic organisms navigate under the skin surface to lay eggs, creating burrows that cause notable discomfort and itching and enable the maturation and subsequent proliferation of the mites. Spread to other hosts can occur through direct, often prolonged, skin-to-skin contact or indirectly through shared items such as clothing, bedding, or towels.Current Concepts: Management of a scabies outbreak encompasses several pivotal steps: accurate diagnosis, comprehensive treatment with topical scabicides to kill the mites, rigorous environmental control (including washing all possibly infested materials in hot water), meticulous contact tracing of all close contacts, administration of symptomatic relief through antihistamines and corticosteroids, and meticulous follow-up to verify successful treatment outcomes.Discussion and Conclusion: The prevention of further infestation and recurrent outbreaks is crucial, necessitating a holistic, integrative public health management approach. This approach involves consistent communication and public education about preventive measures and prompt treatment strategies to curtail widespread infestation, thereby safeguarding community health.
