Abstract Treatment of oral vascular anomalies (OVA) has focused on minimally invasive techniques rather than radical surgery. We investigated the efficacy and safety of diode laser using the photocoagulation technique in the management of OVA. Forty-seven subjects with OVA were treated with forced dehydration with induced photocoagulation (FDIP) using diode laser (808 nm/4.5 W). This series consisted mostly of male (63.8%) and non-white (63.8%) patients with a mean age of 57.4 years. Varices (91.5%), venous malformations (6.4%), and hemangiomas (2.1%) with a mean size of 7.1 (±4.9) mm were the conditions treated. OVA presented as a nodular lesion (63.8%) involving mainly the lower lip (46.8%). Pulsed laser mode was used as standard and the number of applications varied from one to four sessions, with the majority requiring only one (83%) FDIP session. Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed that complete clinical healing can occur on the 15th day (n=9/29.5%), followed by the 20th (n=6/45.5%), and 30th (n=7/70.5%) days. Postoperative edema was observed in 31 (66%) patients, and recurrence of the lesion occurred in two (4.2%). Based on the data on complete clinical healing, minimal patient discomfort, and satisfactory esthetic results, we can confirm that FDIP by diode laser is a promising candidate for the safe and efficacious treatment of OVA.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, worries, anxiety and fear increased, especially when providing dental care. The objective of this research was to analyze the perception of fear of COVID-19 in general dentists and specialists during the pandemic. An observational, analytical, single center and homodemic study was designed. General stomatologists and specialists of any sex from various dental disciplines such as orthodontics, endodontics, maxillofacial surgery, etc., were included. The sample consisted of 72 dentists, 42 general practice (58.3 %) and 32 specialists (41.6 %). Data was collected from March to September 2021. 72 dentists participated (M= 39 years, S.D. 10.82). 69.4 % of the sample (n = 50) were women. According to the analysis of means of the total scale, it was found that men perceive themselves to be slightly more afraid of Covid-19 (M=3.09) than women during their dental practice (M=2.78) without significant differences. Age had an impact on the responses, since those over 40 years of age perceived more fear M= 3.23 (95% CI: 2.65-3.81) than the group from 20 to 40 years M=2.73 (95% CI: 2.37- 3.09). Specialists also perceived greater fear of COVID-19 compared to general practice dentists (M=2.63) vs (M=3.06). The results denoted that 36.1 % of the dentists were afraid of COVID-19. Previous research showed similar results to the study by Monterrosa-Castro et al. (2020) in Colombian general practitioners in which 37.1 % presented symptoms of fear of COVID-19 (FCV-19S). The pandemic context, in addition to the uncertainty of the behavior of COVID-19 and the lack of mass vaccination at the time of collecting the data, played a very important role in the perception of fear of COVID-19. The specialists observed greater fear of COVID-19 as well as the older group.

It might be difficult to diagnose pigmented lesions of the mouth and perioral regions. Although several lesions may be correctly identified on the basis of clinical findings alone and while epidemiology may be helpful in guiding the clinician, the histological examination is typically necessary for the final diagnosis. Oral hyperpigmentation may present exogenously/ endogenously; pathologically/physiologically. The differential diagnosis depends on factors like medication usage, familial history in addition to the position, spread, and length as well as hue and pattern variations. Physiological pigmentation, melanotic macule, melanocytic nevus, smoker's melanosis, oral melanoacanthoma, pigmentation caused by foreign matter or medicines, Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, Addison's disease, and oral melanoma are examples of dark or black pigmented discolorations that can be unifocal, multifocal, or dispersed macular lesions.

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 had a global impact on healthcare services, leading to a decrease and delay in diagnosing various diseases and initiating treatment. Dentistry was quickly recognized as a high-risk area for contamination, resulting in a reduction in the number of consultations conducted. The objective of this study was to identify the main characteristics of consultations at the Oral Medicine Outpatient Clinic from our institution, comparing the number of consultations and diagnoses performed during re-gular years from 2016 to 2019 with the years of the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and Methods: Data were collected and analyzed from clinical records of all patients seen at the Oral Medicine Outpatient Clinic from March 2016 to May 2021. Sociodemographic data and the diagnosis stablished for these patients were collected. In the pre-pandemic period, an average of 324 patients per year were treated. In the pandemic period average was 248.5 per year, indicating a 23.3% reduction in the number of patients treated at the service. When comparing the number and overall percentage of diagnosis stablished, a higher number of malignant neoplasms were identified during the pandemic, despite the reduction in services provided. Thus, we conclude that the COVID-19 pandemic had a negative impact on the total number of new patients admitted to our service but we were able to continue diagnosing cases of malignant neoplasms. This reinforces the importance of maintaining the service, considered essential to the population, during this critical period we have gone through. (AU)

@#Introduction: Continuing Education skills will be accomplished when the student is able to direct their own learning needs, by exposing themselves to the art of unswerving assessment of their own learning methods. The aim of this study was to investigate whether self-assessment of student led seminar presentation in a clinical oral medicine topic by undergraduate dental students could be related with faculty assessment. Methods: This cross-sectional study was done among year four undergraduate dental students. The students and the faculty assessed the student`s seminar presentation based on structured rubrics, that were analysed and discussed together. Results: The paired differences with regards to both the assessments were analysed, the p- value was less than 0.05, suggesting that there was significant difference in the marks between student`s and faculty`s assessments and that the students gave more grades to themselves when compared with the faculty. There was no statistical difference in assessment among male and female students. There was considerable difference between the two assessment mean scores among the low achiever group of students. Conclusion: Dental students generally overrated themselves and there was a definite gap between faculty and student assessment which could be bridged through organised and thoughtful training.

Abstract The aim of this study was to develop a virtual learning object (VLO) to teach undergraduate dental students about the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to oral ulcerative lesions. The VLO was developed with information on the diagnostic process, lesion classification, and clinical-surgical management of oral ulcerative lesions. The VLO content was initially validated by a group of specialists. Learning was evaluated in a sample of 58 undergraduate dental students, divided into control group (conventional theoretical class, n = 29) and intervention group (interaction with VLO, n = 29). All students answered a pre-test and post-test questionnaire. The VLO group also answered a specific questionnaire on the evaluation of the VLO. Both quantitative and qualitative descriptive analyses were performed. The validation showed that professors and students considered the VLO adequate. The use of the VLO was recommended by 100% of professors and 86.6% of students. In the intervention group, the results showed a significantly higher number of correct answers in the post-test (p < 0.01). In conclusion, the VLO proved to be a useful tool for teaching oral medicine, contributing significantly to the knowledge of ulcerated lesions in the mouth.

ABSTRACT Objective: To determine the level of scientific information of dental surgeons who carry out their professional activities in Brazil about antiresorptive drugs and indicated pharmacological procedures aiming at the prevention of osteonecrosis of the jaws and the therapy of drug sequelae that may occur, considering the time since graduation in Dentistry. Material and Methods: This is a quantitative cross-sectional study in which 339 dentists were consulted using the virtual questionnaire containing topics of personal nature, elements contained in the anamnesis carried out and knowledge about antiresorptive drugs, including indications, adverse effects and treatments applied. Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests were performed to analyze associations of data described by absolute and relative frequencies with professionals' time since graduation. All analyses were performed using the R software, with a 5% significance level. Results: Those who revealed to have graduated for more than five years with the highest academic degree were those who demonstrated maximum knowledge of antiresorptive drugs or revealed that, somehow, they had information about them (p<0.05). Conclusion: Dental surgeons in Brazil who have more than five years since graduation have more scientific information about antiresorptive drugs and pharmacological procedures, which can positively contribute to the prevention of osteonecrosis of the jaws and treatment of drug sequelae that may occur.

Introduction: Gemination is the division of a dental follicle that results in a tooth with two crowns, where the number of teeth in the arch does not vary. It constitutes an anomaly that is little diagnosed due to its presentation and therefore little treated, which requires an adequate study. Objective: To present an infrequent clinical case of dental gemination of the permanent upper left lateral incisor. Clinical case: 20-year-old patient with 30 weeks of gestational status treated for periodic review by appointment of her dentist. The intraoral examination revealed: the permanent upper left lateral incisor (tooth 22) with two crowns, one of which had lost the gingival wall and the other had second degree dental caries on the mesial side. Periapical radiography performed 1 year earlier showed tooth 22 with a partially divided pulp chamber and a broad, bifid, well-defined crown. Dental gemination of the permanent maxillary left lateral incisor was diagnosed. The geminated tooth was extracted, and the patient was referred to a dental prosthesis for rehabilitation. Conclusions: Dental gemination of the permanent upper left lateral incisor in a pregnant patient, constitutes an anomaly of the shape of the teeth that is infrequent in consultations.
