Abstract This essay questions, with regard to medicine, the idea of progress as technological development by focusing on people rather than things. It analyzes how the predominance of such an idea of progress converts today’s societies to techno-fetishism that degrades community life and medical practice, contributing to the medicalization of social life. It is argued that the realization of technological potentialities depends on their forms of use; that the main motive of technological development is unlimited profit and that priority developments are those that enhance the social control that maintains the status quo. The intelligence as an intelligence quotient is criticized by proposing it as an attribute of the human being as a whole, manifested in the ways of thinking and proceeding of people in their circumstances, where affectivity and critical thinking are essential for their development; it is emphasized that its antecedent is the harmonic concert of planetary life that contrasts with the prevailing human disharmony. It is proposed that artificial intelligence is the most recent creation of techno-fetishism that deposits vital attributes in technology and that its forms of use will accentuate the degradation of human and planetary life. Another idea of medical progress is proposed, based on forms of organization conducive to the development of inquisitive, critical and collaborative skills that promote permanent improvement, whose distant horizon is dignifying progress: spiritual, intellectual, moral and convivial sublimation of collectivities in harmony with the planetary ecosystem.

BACKGROUND:Sarcopenia is a progressive, generalized skeletal muscle disease that is closely related to the occurrence of osteoarthritis, fractures, limb disability and death in the elderly.Establishing animal models of sarcopenia is essential to understand the pathophysiology of sarcopenia and to identify effective treatment strategies. OBJECTIVE:To review the evaluation criteria of mouse models of sarcopenia and the modeling methods of mouse models of sarcopenia, and to analyze and compare the advantages and disadvantages of various modeling methods,in order to provide reference for the research and diagnosis and treatment of sarcopenia. METHODS:"Sarcopenia, skeletal muscle aging, mouse model, animal model"in Chinese and English were used as Chinese and English search terms, respectively. The search formula was"(sarcopenia OR skeletal muscle aging)AND(mouse model OR animal model)."CNKI,WanFang and PubMed were searched for related articles published from January 2010 and October 2022.A total of 59 articles were finally included for analysis. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:There is a faster modeling time in SAMP8 mice and the type of muscle atrophy is consistent with that of patients with sarcopenia. Therefore,it is an ideal model.Although the surgical method can successfully induce muscle atrophy,it requires precise surgical operation, which is difficult and time-consuming.Hindlimb suspension modeling in mice is similar to that of the elderly and can be regarded as an effective model of senile sarcopenia.Although reagent injection molding is simple to perform, both the dose and number of days of administration of reagents are not clear and need to be further investigated.Transgenic mouse models are less commonly used and their model stability needs further study. The search for a mouse model with low cost, short time consumption and high simulation of human sarcopenia is still a future research direction.

BACKGROUND:Osteoarthritis is a chronic degenerative disease of skeletal muscle, and the incidence of osteoarthritis is increasing yearly, but its pathogenesis is not clear. The commonly used drugs for osteoarthritis include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and glucocorticoid.Adverse drug reactions to these drugs can reduce patient compliance and ultimately affect the efficacy of treatment.Active ingredients in Chinese medicine are closely scrutinized for their safety and other characteristics. OBJECTIVE:Through reviewing the research progress in the effect of active ingredients of traditional Chinese medicine on osteoarthritis-related signaling pathways,to provide ideas and theoretical basis for the research, development, and application of new drugs in the prevention and treatment of osteoarthritis. METHODS:CNKI,WanFang,VIP,PubMed,and GeenMedical were searched for relevant literature in the last 10 years. The key words were"OA,osteoarthritis, traditional Chinese medicine, active ingredients of traditional Chinese medicine, chondrocyte, inflammation, signal pathways, mechanism"in Chinese and English. We excluded the irrelevant repetitive and older literature, and finally included 63 articles for further review. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:The active ingredients of traditional Chinese medicine regulate the levels of inflammatory factors, promote the proliferation and differentiation of chondrocytes, regulate the apoptosis of chondrocytes, and delay the degeneration of chondrocytes through Wnt/β-catenin,NK-ΚB,P38 MAPK,PI3K/AKT,JAK2/STAT3 and other signaling pathways, thus slowing the progression of osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND:Studies have found that chondrocyte ferroptosis can be used as an important pathogenesis to induce the occurrence and development of osteoarthritis. With the continuous development of Chinese medicine, some scholars have found that some traditional Chinese medicine monomers and traditional Chinese medicine compounds can inhibit chondrocyte ferroptosis through various mechanisms of action, and finally play a role in the treatment of osteoarthritis. OBJECTIVE:To explore the relationship between ferroptosis and osteoarthritis and the mechanism by which traditional Chinese medicine deals with ferroptosis in the treatment of osteoarthritis,in order to provide new ideas for the treatment and prevention of osteoarthritis. METHODS:With"osteoarthritis, ferroptosis, chondrocytes, lipid metabolism, traditional Chinese medicine,ROS,GPX 4"as the English and Chinese search terms,CNKI,PubMed,WanFang, and VIP databases were searched for relevant articles regarding the relationship between ferroptosis and osteoarthritis and its traditional Chinese medicine intervention until 2022.Then,a systematic analysis was conducted. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Intracellular iron overload will cause lipid peroxidation, resulting in the accumulation of reactive oxygen species and eventually the occurrence of ferroptosis, while excessive iron will accelerate the apoptosis of chondrocytes and affect chondrocyte homeostasis, thereby inducing the development of osteoarthritis. When amino acid metabolism is abnormal,an imbalance in glutamate and cystine exchange causes the accumulation of glutamate outside the cells, and high extracellular concentration of glutamate will cause the depletion of glutathione, indirectly inhibiting the function of ferroptosis-related factors, and contributing to ferroptosis. When cellular lipid metabolism is abnormal, unsaturated fatty acids,an important component of the cell membrane, lose their diallyl hydrogen atoms, leading to the destruction of cells to induce ferroptosis, while lipid metabolism is closely involved in the progression of osteoarthritis.Traditional Chinese medicine can play a role in the prevention and treatment of osteoarthritis by inducing the occurrence of ferroptosis. The research on iron death is still immature, and further research on its action mechanism is expected to open up new ways for the clinical treatment of osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND:The etiology of osteoarthritis is varied and its pathogenesis is still unclear. As bioinformatics has been deepening in recent years, increasing studies have found that the aberrant expression of long non-coding RNAs(lncRNAs)and microRNAs(miRNAs)in joint tissues may mediate the downstream signaling pathways involved in the development of osteoarthritis. OBJECTIVE:To review the mechanism of lncRNA in the development of osteoarthritis and the therapeutic effects of monomers and active compounds derived from traditional Chinese medicine that modulate lncRNA and downstream signaling pathways in osteoarthritis. METHODS:We searched CNKI,WanFang,VIP,and PubMed using the search terms of"long non-coding RNA,knee osteoarthritis,miRNA,chondrocytes, signaling pathway, and traditional Chinese medicine"in Chinese and English, respectively. The search time was from the inception of each database to March 2023.A total of 61 articles were included according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:The pathogenesis of knee osteoarthritis involves a complex molecular regulatory network, including aberrant expression of lncRNAs and miRNAs in cartilage tissues, which may lead to apoptosis of chondrocytes, degradation of cartilage extracellular matrix, and production of large amounts of pro-inflammatory cytokines. These changes interact with each other to cause degeneration of articular cartilage and progression of osteoarthritis. Therefore, further in-depth studies are needed to reveal the fine mechanisms of the molecular regulatory network. The mechanism of traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of osteoarthritis mainly focuses on regulating the expression of lncRNA and miRNA,thereby alleviating chondrocyte apoptosis and extracellular matrix degradation, promoting cell proliferation, and slowing down the development of osteoarthritis.
