OBJECTIVES: To evaluate and compare the magnitude and distribution of stresses generated on implants, abutments and first molar metal-ceramic crowns using finite element analysis. METHODS: Preliminary three-dimensional models were created using the computer-aided design software SolidWorks. Stress and strain values were observed for two distinct virtual models: model 1 - Morse taper and solid abutment; model 2 - Morse taper and abutment with screw. A load (250 N) was applied to a single point of the occlusal surface at 15° to the implant long axis. Von Mises stresses were recorded for both groups at four main points: 1) abutment-retaining screws; 2) abutment neck; 3) cervical bone area; 4) implant neck. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Model 1 showed a higher stress value (1477.5 MPa) at the abutment-retaining screw area than the stresses found in model 2 (1091.1 MPa for the same area). The cervical bone strain values did not exceed 105 µm for either model.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the compressive resistance under oblique loads of abutments with two different diameters and transmucosal heights used for cement-retained implant-supported prostheses in Morse-taper implants. Forty Morse-taper implants were divided into four groups with different abutment sizes for cement-retained prostheses in order to perform the compressive test. The groups were divided by abutment diameter and transmucosal height as follows: Group 1: 4.5 x 2.5 mm; Group 2: 4.5 x 3.5 mm; Group 3: 3.3 x 2.5 mm; and Group 4: 3.3 x 3.5 mm. An oblique compressive loading test was performed on each sample located in a platform at 30° using a universal testing machine with a load cell of 1,000 kgf and 0.5 mm/min speed until achieving the deformation of abutment's neck. The compressive resistance and its mechanical behavior were recorded for each group and the data were analyzed using ANOVA, the Shapiro-Wilk and Scheffé tests. In addition, the detailed damage of all samples was recorded with a conventional camera linked to the endoscopic equipment. Significant differences were observed among the groups, except between Groups 2 and 3 (p>0.005). All the abutments showed permanent deformations in the upper region and at the transmucosal portion, but the threads of the screws were intact. Fractures were only identified in Groups 3 and 4. Stronger mechanical behavior and compressive resistance was observed in the abutments with 4.5 mm diameter and 2.5 mm transmucosal height.

Computer aided designing-computer aided milling (CAD-CAM) technology was introduced to dentistry way back in 1971. Over the years there has been a constant upgradation in the quality and popularity of its application to dentistry. CAD-CAM fabricated prosthesis though initially were considered costly and technique sensitive, nowadays they are being extensively used because of advancements in various CAD-CAM systems that have gained popularity. Th e ease of work and reduced chair side time makes them a boon while providing prosthodontics treatment. Dental CAD-CAM systems are being used not only for crowns and bridges, inlays and onlays but also for fabrication of removable prosthesis, stents, and implant components. Th is article reviews the evolution of the CAD-CAM system and its applications in the fi eld of dentistry over the past two and a half decades.

The new methodology consisted in changes on implant holder, bearing case, implant centralizer and bone material simulator (acrylic resin). Samples were spun around their long axes while being clamped into a 45o revolving collet on one end and loaded normal to their long axis on the other end. The aim was to determine the load level at which 50% of the specimens survived- and 50% fractured before 106 cycles at 16Hz. Fatigue resistance (F50) were determined using the staircase procedure. After cycling, torque of survival components were measured electronically, and all samples were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, x-ray and digital photography. Results showed that UCLA groups have higher fatigue resistence. The IH-UCLA system showed more stable performance, with equal resistance to EH. Conical Abutment groups failure clinically better, allowing replacement of prosthetic components. The most severe damage occurred in both EH groups, with implant...

Aims : The application of a paint-on die spacer onto the dies prior to the fabrication of cast crowns is an acceptable procedure to improve the fit of the restoration. The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate the variation in thickness of different brands of die spacer based on the effect of storage time and application of additional layers. Materials and Methods: Dies were duplicated from a master model of ivorine teeth, with a full ceramic preparation. Dies obtained were then painted with one, two, and three coats of each brand of die-spacers separately. These dies were embedded in die stone and sectioned bucco-lingually. The same procedure was done after three and six months. The thickness of the paint on die spacer was measured at five points on the die using an optical microscope, and the data were statistically analyzed. Results and Conclusion : There was a definite variation in the thickness of the die spacer with all the three brands and at various points on the die. Two coat thicknesses were found to be in the range of tolerance of 20-40 microns. Thickness at occlusal groove was noted to be the maximum with least at occlusoaxial line angles. Thickness also showed a very significant increase when bottles were stored for a period of three to six months and then applied.
