RESUMO

Mapping of soil properties is an important operation as it plays an important role in the knowledge about soil properties and how it can be used sustainably. Knowledge of soil variability of any region is crucial for development of site-specific management practices for that region as this will enhance the crop productivity and maintain the good soil health. With this background, present study was conducted to quantify the spatial variability of different soil physical properties and soil available micronutrients in Ujjain tehsil (Ujjain) district of Madhya Pradesh state, India. A total one hundred fifty geo-coded surface (0-15 cm depth) soil samples, were collected across the study area. These samples were analyzed using standard method for different some soil properties viz: soil texture (sand, silt and clay) and soil available micronutrients, viz. extractable zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn) and iron (Fe) in laboratory. The range of sand, silt, clay, Zn, Cu, Fe and Mn in the study region were varied from 9.15 to 24.06 %, 24.00 to 41.55 %, 40.20 to 58.60 %, 0.12 to 1.66 mg kg-1, 2.06 to 6.22 mg kg-1, 3.70 to 10.40 mg kg-1, and 2.41 to 14.64 mg kg-1, respectively. The data were analyzed using standard statistical methods and geostatistics, which included creating semi-variograms and mapping by standard kriging procedures. Semi-variograms were produced for soil properties and their regional distributions were plotted. The observed soil parameters were best represented by four models: Exponential, Circular, Gaussian, and Hole effect. The modelled variables showed strong and moderate spatial dependencies, as demonstrated by the Nugget/Sill (Co/Co+C) ratio. The distribution maps of soil features may serve as a reference for implementing site-specific crop management in soils with comparable characteristics. Further, this research indicates the relevance of GIS- application in soil variability investigations.

RESUMO

Soil is an important source of available nutrients. Either shortage or surplus of available nutrients in the soil would limit growth of crops. Understanding the spatial variability and distribution patterns of soil available nutrients is essential for soil management with respect to fertilizer application. A total of 111 geo-referenced soil samples were collected on 300 m x 300 m grid at a depth of 0–15 cm, processed and analyzed for pH, EC, soil organic carbon (SOC), available nitrogen (AN), available phosphorus (AP), available potassium (AK), available sulphur (AS), available iron (Fe), available manganese (Mn), available zinc (Zn) and available copper (Cu). Soil properties coefficients of variation (CVs) of soil properties widely varied from low (5.22%) to moderate (49.28%). The geostatistics and geographic information system (GIS) techniques were applied. Ordinary kriging and semivariogram analysis showed differed spatial variability patterns for the studied soil properties with spatial dependence ranged from moderate to strong. The semivariograms for the soil properties were best fitted with spherical model. The range of influence for available N, P, K and S were 268, 287, 497 and 706 m, respectively. The spatial ranges of available Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu were 1050, 1150, 1470, and 1430 m, respectively. The spatial dependence class was strong for EC, SOC, available P, K and was moderate for available N, S, Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu. The available N and P is categorized as low (<280 kg ha-1) and low (<11 kg ha-1) to medium (<22 kg ha-1), respectively were the main limiting factors in crop production. The availability K was categorized as medium (118-280 kg ha-1) to high (> 280 kg ha -1). The soil nutrient maps generated would help to provide precise fertilizer recommendations for sustainable production and environmental conservation.

RESUMO

The infiltration of water in the soil, and its variation in space, is essential to establish the irrigation schedule for crops and to evaluate the possible degrading effects on the soil. The objective was to develop an integrated processing methodology in Rstudio to identify the spatial variability of the accumulated infiltration, in two phases related to pea crops. Field sampling was carried out on a rectangular mesh with 48 points per moment, using double infiltrometer rings. The data were evaluated by means of geostatistical tools adjusted with programming code in Rstudio, defining the relationships between the magnitudes of the accumulated infiltration, for different test instants, without the need to make statistical adjustments to the normality of variables, discriminated over a period between 1 and 80 minutes. The results suggest the existence of spatial variability of the accumulated infiltration in the two evaluated phases, considering that most of the analyzed data were adjusted to multiple variance models, maintaining a degree of spatial dependence, and validating the effectiveness of the adjusted methodology developed and implemented. The spatial relationships were corroborated by means of contour maps, where the spatial variation of the accumulated infiltration between the two identified cultivation moments was observed. The reliability of the interpolation by the Ordinary Kriging method was verified by generating variance maps, establishing the degree of homogeneity of the interpolation. The variability of infiltration confirms the validity of the adjusted methodology implemented.

The usage of spatial tools might be helpful in the optimization of decision-making regarding soil management, with technologies that assist in the interpretation of information related to soil fertility. Therefore, the present study evaluated the spatial variability of chemical attributes of the soil under an agroforestry system compared to a native forest in the municipality of Tomé-açu, Eastern Amazon, Brazil. Soil samples were performed at 36 points arranged in a 55 x 55 m grid. The soils were prepared and submitted to analysis in order to determine pH in H2O, exchangeable calcium, magnesium, potassium and aluminium, available phosphorus, potential acidity, organic matter, bases saturation and aluminium saturation. For each soil attribute, the spherical, gaussian and exponential models were adjusted. After the semivariograms fitting, data interpolation for assessment of spatial variability of the variables was performed through ordinary kriging. The spherical and gaussian models were the most efficient models in estimation of soil attributes spatial variability, in most cases. Most of variables presented a regular spatial variability in their respective kriging maps, with some exceptions. In general, the kriging maps can be used, and we can take them as logistical maps for management and intervention practices in order to improve the soil fertility in the study areas. The results principal components indicate the need for integrated management of soil chemical attributes, with localized application of acidity correctors, fertilizers and other types of incomes, using the spatial variability of these fertility variables.

Cocoa cultivation in the Peruvian tropics has low yields, which requires seeking alternatives to increase the production. Faced with this situation, geospatial studies facilitate the diagnosis of fertility and the efficient application of fertilization plans. Therefore, the spatial distribution of physicochemical indicators and soil quality in Padre Abad, Ucayali region, Peru were evaluated. Physicochemical indicators and soil quality were evaluated and subjected to geostatistical analysis through the Kriging interpolator, finding low coefficients of variation for clay, pH and potassium (K+), and medium for sand, silt, organic matter (OM), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K+), calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+), aluminum (Al3+), cation exchange capacity (CEC), base saturation (BS), exchangeable acid (EA) and aluminum saturation (AlS). Soil quality ranged from low to very low quality with a spatial distribution of 52.24 % and 47.76 % respectively. Principal component analysis found significance for sand, silt, OM, N, K+, Al3+, CEC, %EC, %BS and %AlS, all showing spatial variation according to their fertility level, except K+. The interpolation models with best fits were the exponential and linear with strong spatial dependence for sand, silt and K, moderate for MO, N, Al, CEC, %AlS and soil quality index (SQI), and weak for %BS and %EC, with reliable prediction efficiency. The research found high spatial variability with low mean values of the different fertility indicators, not favorable for cocoa crop development.

RESUMO

The productive potential of the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) is dependent on its genetic composition, in addition to edaphoclimatic factors and management practices. However, as soil properties are not homogenous, knowing the spatial variability of soil attributes would be important to increase productivity and reduce production costs. In this context, the objective of this study was to determine the spatial variability of chemical attributes of the soil and its influence on the nutritional status and growth of rubber tree clones. Clones FX 3864, FDR 5788, CDC 312, and RRIM 600 were planted at Jaturnaíba Farm, in the municipality of Silva Jardim, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. The sampling sites were distributed at a spacing of 20 × 20 m on the northern and southern sides of the relief. The chemical attributes of the soil (pH, Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, P, Al3+, H+Al, sum of bases, cation exchange capacity, and base saturation) were evaluated at a depth of 020 cm in the different clone plantations. Additionally, the N, P, K, Ca, and Mg content as well as trunk circumference and total plant height, were also evaluated. Geostatistics was used to determine the spatial variability of the soil and clone attributes, while Ordinary Kriging was used to draw variability maps of the variables. A difference in the distribution of the variables, which was dependent on the slope of the relief, was detected through the maps. The southern side presented better conditions as some degradation was observed on the northern side. Certain soil characteristics influenced the distribution of the attributes of the planted clones; for example, the low concentration of Ca2+ in the soil caused Ca deficiency in the FX clone on the southern slope, indicating that liming did not supply enough nutrients for this clone. Our results showed that the variability in soil attributes influenced the nutritional status and growth of the rubber tree clones, indicating that variability maps can guide the planting and management of the rubber tree, providing more efficient management.

RESUMO

The replacement of bedding in compost dairy barns (CB) comprises a recurrent management practice, but bedding materials are often not readily available in all regions and the choice of alternative materials is necessary. The objective was to evaluate the thermal attributes of carnauba straw (CS) bedding in compost dairy barn facilities. Environmental monitoring operations were performed at a commercial farm located in Northeast Brazil. Mini weather stations were used to evaluate environmental variables. The THI was evaluated as one of the comfort parameters. Analysis of the spatial distribution of bed surface temperature (BST) in the CB was performed using geostatistical techniques. The cows remained out of the comfort zone according to THI results. The BST indicated satisfactory performance and from the thermal point of view can be used as alternative bedding material in CB facilities. However, it was observed that the CS showed fast biomass degradation compared to conventional materials, widely known. In addition, inadequate temperature values (< 45°C) were found in the deeper of the CS bed, signaling higher risks of pathogenic microbial activity. Additional studies are needed for searching the proper management plans that increase the life span of the bed formed by carnauba straw.(AU)

ABSTRACT: This study evaluated: (1) the vulnerability of broiler houses with different cooling systems, and (2) the spatial distribution of environmental variables during hot days. Four potentially vulnerable commercial broiler houses in southern Brazil were selected according to the following parameters: absence or presence of different cooling systems, broilers older than 28 days, and outside air dry-bulb temperature over 30°C. Broiler house vulnerability was classified according to the cooling and mechanical ventilation system: cellulose pad cooling (CPC), sprinkling (SPK), fogging (FOG), and mechanical ventilation without evaporative cooling system (VTL). The air dry-bulb temperature (Tdb, °C) and relative humidity (RH, %) were recorded every 10 min. For each broiler house, we evaluated: (1) relative cooling efficiency (RCE) and (2) inside spatial distribution of microclimate variables using a geostatistical technique. The CPC and SPK did not differ (P<0.05) in RCE (81.6% and 80.7%, respectively), but both differed from FOG (23.8%) and VLT (1.87%) systems. The highest variations in indoor Tdb were recorded in the FOG (7 °C), followed by the SPK (4 °C) and CPC (3 °C). In the CPC, there was an increase in RH from the middle to the end of the broiler house near the exhaust fans. In conclusion, the relative cooling efficiency and the inside spatial distributions of environmental variables in the broiler houses were influenced by the existing cooling system.

Abstract Kriging is a method that estimates values in places not sampled from different interpolators, therefore, widely used to predict the spatial distribution of organisms. However, the different interpolators may vary in performance depending on the organism under study or the area evaluated. The aimed study to compare the ordinary kriging and inverse of distance weighted interpolation methods, applied to the spatial distribution of population density of Tibraca limbativentris in irrigated rice. This study was carried out in Santa Maria, RS, Brazil, in two fields with areas of 1.3 ha and 6.2 ha, respectively. Seven evaluations of the population density of T. limbativentris were carried out, corresponding to the period from sowing to maturation. In these areas the adults of T. limbativentris were quantified and the sum used for the statistical and geostatistical analysis. The sample population of T. limbativentris was submitted to different semivariograms, which were selected through cross-validation. The sample population of T. limbativentris was submitted to different semivariograms, selected by means of cross-validation. Once selected, semivariograms were used in both tested interpolation methods. From the results it was concluded that the ordinary kriging interpolation method performed better in all evaluations performed in both areas. Therefore, we recommend its use for estimating the population density and spatial distribution of T. limbativentris in the irrigated rice throughout the crop phenology. Using appropriate interpolation methods, localized management can be used, reducing costs for controlling this pest and increasing the sustainability of the environment.

Abstract Persea americana is a species of great nutritional and economic importance for Mexico, however, like any other agricultural crop, it is affected by pests and diseases that limit its worldwide commercialization. The phytopathogenic fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides is the causative agent of anthracnose in avocado and manifests itself in the early stages of fruit development as well as in post-harvest and storage, under conditions of high relative humidity (80%) and at temperatures from 20°C, causing losses economic up to 20% of production. Applying geostatistical methods the present study aims to define the spatial distribution of anthracnose in Hass avocado fruits in four municipalities of the State of Mexico during the period from January to June 2017. The results show that the distribution of anthracnose was adjusted to gaussian and exponential models in most, the infestation maps made through the kriging show more than one centerof aggregation of the disease, based on it the infested surface was estimated, finding an infestation of more than 50% in the first samples and up to 98% in the samplings belonging to the month of June in all the areas studied. © 2019 Published by Elsevier Espana, S.L.U. on behalf of Asociación Argentina de Microbiología. RESUMO

The intensive agricultural machinery traffic to which soils under coffee crops are exposed may cause significant changes in soil structure. The goals of this study were to: a) characterize the spatial variability of precompression stress (σp) and volumetric water content (θ) of a Red-Yellow Latosol (Oxisol) and determine their spatially dependent structures using ordinary kriging semivariograms; b) using this date to construct a load-bearing capacity (LBC) map for the site, identifying the depth with higher ; and c) use the map as a decision support tool regarding agricultural machinery logistic management in coffee plantations. The research was conducted on an experimental farm of the Agricultural Research Company of Minas Gerais (Epamig), Patrocinio, MG, on a clayey Oxisol. Samples were collected from 2.0 × 1.5 m sampling pits at intersections of a rectangular 40 × 150 m grid, totaling 28 sampling points. The soil samples were collected with metal rings (0.0254 m in height and 0.0630 m in diameter) using an Uhland sampler. Sampling at each pit was at 3 layers: 0.000.03 m, 0.100.13 m, and 0.250.28 m, and seven samples arranged in a matrix form were collected at each layer, totaling 588 samples. The σp and θ showed a spatially dependent structure. The depth of 0.000.03 m showed higher LBC, indicating that this depth was more compacted compared to other depths. Based on the σp maps, the tractor and the combine should not traffic into the areas at water content of 0.45 m3 m-3, because the soil has a LBC of 200 kPa. If this condition is not respected, additional compaction will occur. Tractor traffic is permissible when the water content reaches values less than 0.36 m3 m-3, whereas for combine traffic, the water content values must be less than 0.30 m3 m-3.

Spatial variability of chemical attributes in soils tends to increase under the no-tillage system. However, data regarding this variability under this system for a long time are scarce. This study aimed to evaluate the spatial variability of phosphorus (P), organic matter (OM), pH, aluminum (Al), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), base saturation (V%), sulfur (SO42-), and micronutrients: boron (B), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), and zinc (Zn) in soil with conventional tillage and no-tillage treatments for more than three decades in order to optimize fertilization and maintain soil conservation. Samples of Rhodic Hapludox were collected at 0.000.20 m depth. Sampling points were spaced 5 m apart, totaling 100 points. All sampling points were georeferenced according to the tillage system. Samples were analyzed chemically. Semivariograms and kriging were used in descriptive statistics and geostatistics analyses of the results. Only micronutrients and P presented distinct spatial variability between the treatments. Most of the analyzed chemical attributes presented spatial dependency in both tillage systems, which may help determine the best form of sampling and indicate adequate fertilization. According to semivariogram range values of OM, Mg, and K, the same sampling strategy may be adopted for analysis in both tillage systems, yet for Al, Ca, and pH the strategy should be specific

The Black Archaeological Lands (TPAs) are fertility soils that are notoriously superior to the vast majority of typical soils in the Amazon region. Thus, the use of TPAs has intensified due to the chemical characteristics presented by these soils, such as the high concentration of nutrients (phosphorus, calcium, magnesium). In this sense, the objective of this study was to evaluate the spatial distribution of the chemical attributes of the soil in an area of Terra Preta Arqueológica under cocoa cultivation in the city of Apuí (AM). The mapping of a mesh of 42 x 88 m, with irregular spacing of 6 x 8 m, totaling 88 points, was carried out and, then, soil samples were collected at depths of 0.0-0.05; 0.05-0.10; (pH, O.C, Sto. C, (H + Al), P, K, Ca, Mg, SB, CEC and V%). The data were analyzed using descriptive and geostatistical statistical techniques. The mean and median values were adjusted to the close values, indicating normal distribution, while the chemical attributes of the soil were adjusted to the models of spherical and exponential semivariograms. Most of the attributes presented a variation coefficient (CV) between 12.1 and 60%, characterized as average variability, the study variables had different ranges and most had a strong spatial dependence. The geostatistical techniques used allowed the adjustments of the theoretical models that best represented the experimental semivariance, allowing the construction of thematic maps of the spatial distribution of the values of the attributes of the studied area.

RESUMO

Having in mind the importance of knowing the variability and spatial correlation of soil properties in Indian Dark Earth (IDE), we evaluated in this study the variability and the spatial correlation of aggregates and carbon in an Ultisol under coffee cultivation in southern Amazonas. It was established a 48 x 88 m sampling grid spaced 06 x 08 m, totalling 88 sampling points. Then soil samples were collected at: 0.0-.05, 0.05-0.10, and 0.10-0.20 m layers. The spatial variability of the Mean Weighted Diameter (MWD) attributes, aggregates > 2 mm, < 2 mm, bulk density (BD) and organic carbon (OC) was analyzed by adjusting the simple semivariograms, while spatial correlations of the OC with aggregates and BD were analyzed by cross-semivariogram. We could conclude that there was spatial dependence in the variables, wherein the largest ones were observed at 0.0-0.05 m, except for Mean Weighted Diameter (MWD) and aggregates greater than 2.00 mm with larger range of values in depth from 0.05-0.10 and 0.10-0.20 m. The mean weight diameter and aggregate class attributes greater than 2.00 mm had negative spatial correlation with organic carbon at 0.0-0.05 m, while the smaller aggregates than 2.00 mm classes and bulk density correlated positively with organic carbon at 0.0-0.05 m and 0.10-0.20 m.

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) has a representative agricultural holding, not only for the economic value of its production, but also for the large area of growing in Brazil. In the harvest 2016/17, this work was conducted in a Quartzarenic Neosol in the municipality of Cassilândia, MS. The objective of this work was to characterize the structure and magnitude of the spatial distribution of phenological indices of the common bean crop and to map the phenological indices in order to visualize the spatial distribution and to evaluate the spatial correlation among common bean yield and plant variables: grain yield (YIE), mass of one hundred grains (MHG), number of grains per plant (NG), number of grains per pod (NGP), number of pods per plant (NP), dry matter (DM), plant length (PL) and stem diameter (SD), sampled in a grid of 117 georeferenced points (81 points of base grid and 36 points of higher density grid). Analysis of these data through statistical and geostatistical techniques made it possible to verify that the production and yield components presented spatial dependence. There was a positive spatial correlation among common bean yield and the mass of one hundred grains, number of grains per pod and plant length, demonstrating that they have a strong spatial dependence.

ABSTRACT: The main purpose of this article was to evaluate the behavior and relationship of the range and components of SDI (Spatial Dependence Index) in general and in function of field factors such as soil types, type of attribute and soil layers. This evaluation was based on real data collected in national journals. It was noticed that the parameter range, in general and for different field factors, presented asymmetric positive behavior. The components of the SDI showed approximately symmetrical behavior. The SDI can capture the range behavior more intensely (the spatial variability behavior in the horizontal direction of the semivariogram), and, in a less intense way, the behavior of the contribution and sill parameters (the spatial dependence behavior in the vertical direction of the semivariogram). Thus, the SDI describes the behavior of spatial dependence of the total set of aspects of the semivariogram.

ABSTRACT Object-based change detection is a powerful analysis tool for remote sensing data, but few studies consider the potential of temporal semivariogram indices for mapping land-cover changes using object-based approaches. In this study, we explored and evaluated the performance of semivariogram indices calculated from remote sensing imagery, using the Normalized Differential Vegetation Index (NDVI) to detect changes in spatial features related to land cover caused by a disastrous 2015 dam failure in Brazil's Mariana district. We calculated the NDVI from Landsat 8 images acquired before and after the disaster, then created objects by multiresolution segmentation analysis based on post-disaster images. Experimental semivariograms were computed within the image objects and semivariogram indices were calculated and selected by principal component analysis. We used the selected indices as input data to a support vector machine algorithm for classifying change and no-change classes. The selected semivariogram indices showed their effectiveness as input data for object-based change detection analysis, producing highly accurate maps of areas affected by post-dam-failure flooding in the region. This approach can be used in many other contexts for rapid and accurate assessment of such land-cover changes.

ABSTRACT The aim of this work was to analyze geochemical data in order to check their stationarity and to correlate the statistical normality using the ordinary kriging technique. The ordinary kriging technique was chosen as the geostatistical method applied to work because such technique is advised for studies in areas where there are data with variables that might present spatial dependence, like the geochemical variables, and also because it is indicated for data presenting stationarity. The methodology used for this research involved, besides literature review, data collection of trace metals (Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, Cr and Pb) that were partially extracted from surface samples (0 to 10 cm) of soils and sediments collected in the field. We also determined the values of pH, salinity, total nitrogen, phosphorus, organic matter and particle size. Statistical analyzes, semivariogram development, ordinary kriging use and, lastly, cross validation were performed to measure the uncertainty of the previous measurement of data. It was found, in this work, by means of the variograms that although data were ordinary, they showed stationarity. In addition, the parameter of descriptive statistics that mostly correlates directly with the ordinary kriging is variance.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Terrain models that represent riverbed topography are used for analyzing geomorphologic changes, calculating water storage capacity, and making hydrologic simulations. These models are generated by interpolating bathymetry points. River bathymetry is usually surveyed through cross-sections, which may lead to a sparse sampling pattern. Hybrid kriging methods, such as regression kriging (RK) and co-kriging (CK) employ the correlation with auxiliary predictors, as well as inter-variable correlation, to improve the predictions of the target variable. In this study, we use the orthogonal distance of a (x, y) point to the river centerline as a covariate for RK and CK. Given that riverbed elevation variability is abrupt transversely to the flow direction, it is expected that the greater the Euclidean distance of a point to the thalweg, the greater the bed elevation will be. The aim of this study was to evaluate if the use of the proposed covariate improves the spatial prediction of riverbed topography. In order to asses such premise, we perform an external validation. Transversal cross-sections are used to make the spatial predictions, and the point data surveyed between sections are used for testing. We compare the results from CK and RK to the ones obtained from ordinary kriging (OK). The validation indicates that RK yields the lowest RMSE among the interpolators. RK predictions represent the thalweg between cross-sections, whereas the other methods under-predict the river thalweg depth. Therefore, we conclude that RK provides a simple approach for enhancing the quality of the spatial prediction from sparse bathymetry data.

A KR apresentou a menor REQM.

AbstractThe spatial and temporal distributions of vegetation can be influenced by edaphic and environmental factors as well as disturbances. The present study was undertaken to characterize the distribution and spatial dependence of species diversity in a fragment of semideciduous seasonal forest after a disturbance event by fire and to identify changes during natural regeneration. The fire, occurred in 1999, and surveys were undertaken in 2000, 2005 and 2014 in 26 geo-referenced plots (400 m²) distributed along two transects. The Fire Damage Index (FDI) in each plot was based on a scale from 0 to 5, and all of the arboreal individuals with diameters at breast height (DBH) ≥ 5 cm were identified in each plot. Species diversity was calculated using the Shannon index (H'), and species richness (S) was estimated using species accumulation curves; variations between the surveys compared based on the means and standard errors. The S, H' and FDI data were submitted to non-spatial exploratory and geostatistical analyses. After adjusting the semivariograms, the levels of spatial dependence were classified, and interpolation of the variables values were performed using ordinary kriging to characterize their spatial distributions in the form of maps. Spatial analysis was used to identify and characterize differences between the post-fire surveys in terms of the configurations of the arboreal community. The fire event influenced the spatial and temporal structures of the variables S and H'. These variables showed spatial dependence and aggregated distributions, with reduction in the distance under spatial influences and a uniformity of individuals distribution in the forest fragment at the different surveys. This research characterized the distribution and spatial dependence of the variables S and H' in a forest fragment after a fire event and the alterations in the arboreal community structure during natural regeneration.
