RESUMO

Myocastor coypus (coypu or nutria) is considered one of the 100 worst invasive species in the world due to its risk to local wildlife, such as waterfowl, zoonotic risks, and environmental damage, such as riverbank erosion, arising from its habit of constructing burrows along the edge of water bodies. The presence of M. coypus is already known locally in the municipality of Londrina based on records at Igapó Lake. This paper presents the first record of M. coypus in Arthur Thomas Municipal Park, a Conservation Unit of Integral Protection located in the urban area of Londrina. The records were obtained through direct observation of one live individual and one carcass during campaigns to monitor medium and large mammals. Subsequently, ten records were obtained using camera traps, of unknown gender, located near waterbodies. We emphasize the need for continuous fauna monitoring in conservation units to detect and verify potential increases in invasive alien species populations that can result in environmental damage.

A 75-year-old male with a previous history of coronary artery bypass grafting (LITA-LAD, RITA-RA-4PD-14PL) was referred to our hospital for congestive heart failure. Cardiac workup revealed severe ischemic mitral regurgitation which required surgical correction. His preoperative coronary arterial computed tomography demonstrated total occlusion of both orifices of the native coronary arteries, and the complete dependence of his myocardial blood supply on the patent bypass grafts without any evidence of ischemia. Therefore, antegrade cardioplegia could not be applied for cardiac protection during the procedure. Continuous retrograde cardioplegia was planned to be applied in a case where both arterial grafts could be dissected and clamped whereas systemic hyperkalemia and mild hypothermia would be applied in case where the clamp would be impossible. Intraoperatively, both arterial grafts could be dissected and clamped and we performed mitral annuloplasty and tricuspid annuloplasty using continuous retrograde cardioplegia. The patient could be weaned off cardiopulmonary bypass without difficulty, and his postoperative course was uneventful. We conclude that continuous retrograde cardioplegia is a safe and viable option, especially when antegrade cardioplegia is not securely delivered due to an occluded coronary ostia.

RESUMO

Abstract Understanding morphological and physiological changes under different light conditions in native fruit species in juveniles stage is important, as it indicate the appropriate environment to achieve vigorous saplings. We aimed to verify growth and morphophysiological changes under shade gradient in feijoa (Acca sellowiana (O. Berg) Burret) to achieve good quality saplings adequate to improve cultivation in orchards. The saplings were grown for twenty-one-month under four shading treatments (0%, 30%, 50%, and 80%). Growth, photosynthetic pigments, gas exchanges, chlorophyll fluorescence, and leaf anatomy parameters were evaluated. Saplings under full sun and 30% shade had higher height and diameter growth and dry mass accumulation due to higher photosynthesis rate. As main acclimatization mechanisms in feijoa saplings under 80% shade were developed larger leaf area, reduced leaf blade thickness, and enhanced quantum yield of photosystem II. Even so, the net CO2 assimilation and the electron transport rate was lower and, consequently, there was a restriction on the growth and dry mass in saplings under deep shade. Therefore, to obtain higher quality feijoa saplings, we recommend that it be carried out in full sun or up to 30% shade, to maximize the sapling vigor in nurseries and, later, this light environment can also be used in orchards for favor growth and fruit production.

"Natal and neonatal" teeth are rare phenomena but fairly well documented in the literature. These teeth appear before the age of dental eruption and are the cause of many complications. Their management is therefore an absolute priority in order to maintain an oral condition compatible with the physiological needs of the newborn. In this regard, many treatments have been described. Aim: to review the management of natal and neonatal teeth in order to better understand and achieve the best therapeutic modalities of this phenomenon described as "rare". Natal and neonatal teeth have long raised many questions about their etiologies, their diagnosis and their treatment. Whether it is the pediatrician or the dentist, the diagnosis and the treatment involvement is based on unanimity and active collaboration between the medical teams. The treatment, ranging from a simple polishing to the extraction of the natal or neonatal tooth, it is wise to establish a therapy adapted to the clinical situation while sensitizing the parents of the importance of a clinical and radiological follow-up of the oral condition of the child with this particularly rare anomaly and which may be associated with a general pathological condition

El Pisco stands as Peru's distilled spirit, crafted from recently fermented musts derived from native grape varieties known as "pisqueras". Yeasts serve as decisive microorganisms in the fermentation process, and the utilization of selected native strains confers competitive advantages for product typicity, standardization, and microbiological control within the production process. The aim was to identify and select native yeast strains for Quebranta grape Pisco production, isolated from Pisco production processes in the Ica Valley. Microbiological and molecular techniques were employed, utilizing ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 PCR-RFLP analysis for taxonomic identification. The assessment of yeast strains for Pisco production involved the physicochemical and organoleptic analysis of the distilled product obtained using the selected strains. Three isolates were evaluated for Pisco production, identified as Saccharomyces cerevisiae: UNA SC - 25, UNA SC - 49, and UNA SC - 54. Among these, the UNA SC-49 strain stood out due to displaying oenological characteristics distinct from the other strains. This work is the first documentation of native yeasts in Peru for musts derived from Quebranta grapes.

In this work, we hypothesize that the period of isolation, immobilization, and reverse migration that occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic (years 2020 and 2021) increased the hunting capacity of the Matsigenka communities settled in Manu National Park (PN Manu). To evaluate this, we assessed changes in hunting volume patterns through participatory monitoring using the hunting intensity monitoring model. It was evident that there was an increase in the hunting capacity of Matsigenka communities. The highest extraction volumes and the greatest increase in the number of hunters, hunting effort, and hunting area occurred in the 2020-2021 period, the year in which isolation and immobilization measures were established. However, there was a decrease in the indicators for the 2021-2022 period, the year in which isolation measures were relaxed and economic reactivation occurred, allowing people to return to their economic and educational activities outside PN Manu. It should be considered that the effects of only one year of the pandemic on the livelihoods of the communities could have affected the abundance of wildlife, with vulnerable species such as maquisapa monkeys and choro monkeys experiencing high extraction rates. On the other hand, our results indicate that the good conservation status of PN Manu provided food provisions for the communities during the pandemic. Planning programs to mitigate the negative effects of pandemics or similar events is recommended, and the importance of measuring the resilience of key hunting species is emphasized, as increased hunting could also have effects on the food security of these communities.

RESUMO

Concomitant mitral and aortic valve stenosis in a patient with mitral annular calcification and porcelain aorta poses a unique problem to the surgical team. Transcatheter aortic and mitral valve replacements in native valves offer a viable option for such selected group of patients. We present the case of a 54-year-old male who presented with severe aortic stenosis (AS) and severe mitral stenosis (MS) but was deemed high risk for surgery owing to intense calcification of the aorta and mitral annular calcification, and successfully underwent transcatheter double native valve replacement.

RESUMO

Infectious endocarditis is a rare but feared condition, most frequently caused by Staphylococcus aureus. We describe the case of an 81-year-old male patient presenting with intermittent fever and dyspnea. Cardiac evaluation with transthoracic echocardiogram showed the presence of heart failure with suspicion of endocarditis. Consequently, a transesophageal echocardiogram demonstrated vegetation on the native mitral valve with an unaffected prosthetic aortic valve. Blood cultures were positive for S. aureus. Literature concerning endocarditis originating from a native valve in patients with a prosthetic valve is limited. We applied a new treatment scheme consisting of intravenous floxapen 12 g/24 h in a continuous infusion combined with intravenous rifampicin 2×300 mg daily for a duration of 6 weeks resulting in complete regression of the vegetation. In addition, we were successful in preventing disease propagation to the prosthetic valve. There is a need for more adequate research to prove the prophylactic benefit of this treatment.valve

RESUMO

Background & objectives: West Nile virus (WNV) is transmitted by a mosquito-borne virus whose natural reservoir is birds. Humans and horses are considered accidental hosts. Even if the vast majority of WNV infections in humans have asymptomatic or mild disease settings, serious neurological disorders with lethal outcomes can also be observed in around 1% of the cases. We aimed to serologically investigate the presence of WNV in humans living in Black sea of Turkey, and to obtain epidemiological data that will contribute to the implementation of public health policies to control and prevent potentially other life-threatening arboviral infections. Methods: In the current study, a total of 416 human sera were collected from native patients of Samsun and its boroughs attending Samsun Training and Research Hospital; these sera were tested for WNV with pooling method, using anti-IgM and IgG ELISA commercial kits. All pools that were found positive for both IgM and IgG were individually retested for the detection of positive WNV sera. After that, all positive samples were tested using realtime PCR to detect the presence of WNV-RNA particles. Results: Total seropositivity rates of WNV in terms of IgM and IgG were found as 0.96% and 0.72%, respectively. No presence of WNV-RNA could be detected in positive samples. Interpretation & conclusion: According to the data, further studies should be conducted to better understand the epidemiological dynamics of WNV in Turkey. It is recommended that other antigenically related flaviviruses which can give cross-reaction with WNV should also be investigated.

RESUMO

@#Glycosylation of proteins, one of the most prevalent and complex post-translational modifications occurring in nature, plays a crucial role in regulating protein net charge, conformation, binding properties and, ultimately, biological function.Traditional structural techniques are not amenable for glycoproteins due to the inherent heterogeneity of oligosaccharides. With the advances in analytical technique, mass spectrometry displays an increasingly crucial role in elucidating the structure of glycoproteins.Mass spectrometry-based proteomic technique can dissect the chemical composition and site information of low-abundance glycosylation at the peptide level.Instead, native mass spectrometry (nMS) can analyze intact glycoproteins while maintaining the information for glycan heterogeneity, and the insights into the regulatory effects of glycosylation on protein higher order structures and interactions with other proteins or ligands. As a representative structural mass spectrometry tool, ion mobility-based nMS strategy is powered by its conformer-resolving capability and by the feasibility of conformer manipulation through collision-induced unfolding.Consequently, native IM-MS analysis can provide rich information of dynamic protein conformations, allowing for the rapid identification and differentiation of protein isoforms in an unprecedented manner. In this review, we briefly introduced two emerging native IM-MS analytical modes, dynamic conformer-resolving mode and glycoform-resolving mode.Besides, we also discussed the recent progress of conformational and topological characterization of intact glycoproteins with three typical model systems based on two above-mentioned emerging modes of native IM-MS.

@#Adeno-associated virus (AAV) is a common viral vector used in gene therapy.Because of its high safety and its ability to target a variety of cells, it has been widely used in preclinical and clinical studies. However, during the design and production, AAV vectors have many key quality attributes that affect their safety and efficacy. The development and application of biological mass spectrometry technology provides a convenient platform for the research on biological macromolecules, especially in the aspects of protein sequence, structure and interaction. For AAV vectors, mass spectrometry can facilitate the determination or characterization of capsid protein ratio, post-translational modification, serotype, and empty capsid ratio, thus assisting in the quality control of AAV vectors.Compared with the existing methods, mass spectrometry has the advantages of smaller amount of sample size, faster and more sensitive analysis, being more suitable for the analysis of complete AAV vectors with higher mass resolution, and can distinguish empty capsids, full capsids and partial capsids. In the future, mass spectrometry technology is expected to play a more important role in the design and production of AAV vectors through the coupling of more efficient protein separation technology with mass spectrometry, the development of new information processing software platforms and new mass spectrometry detection techniques.

RESUMO

Abstract Two species of Poaceae (Aristidoideae) Aristida ekmaniana Henrard and A. macrophylla Hack. considered "presumably extinct" in the Brazilian state of São Paulo were rediscovered during fieldwork. We hereby describe the location, ecosystem, and habitat type where the species were found. We suggest these grasses be removed from the list of extinct species and be placed in a category compatible with the current knowledge about their conservation status in the state of São Paulo.

RESUMO

Abstract Artificial impoundments are frequently built to mitigate the water scarcity in the drylands such as the Caatinga region in Brazil. The São Francisco Interbasin Water Transfer (SF-IWT) megaproject implemented many artificial reservoirs for that purpose. A checklist of fish species from the SF-IWT reservoirs is provided based on samples from eight years of monitoring. The collections were conducted semiannually at 28 reservoirs divided into three groups: the East Axis, North Axis, and Agreste Branch. The SF-IWT reservoirs presented a total of 47 species, 46 were recorded in the North Axis, 27 in the East Axis, and only seven in the Agreste Branch. Characids and cichlids represented most of the species. The three analyzed groups of reservoirs presented distinct communities and the reservoirs' age, richness and abundance were relevant variables responsible for fish composition. The SF-IWT reservoirs present a diverse and heterogeneous ichthyofauna, typical of lentic environments. The main colonizers of the SF-IWT reservoirs were fish from the São Francisco donor basin, invasive species anthropically released in those sites, and eventual species from the surrounding receiving basins. As the accumulation curves suggested, a continuous effort could reveal additional species, patterns in long-term colonization, and contribute to data on the reservoirs' future stabilization phase. Since invasive species were present in most reservoirs, along with donor-basin native species with potential to disperse to the receiving basins, a continuous and detailed monitoring is key for management planning and possible impacts assessment.

Methods: During five sampling seasons (2019-2020) we collected fishes from ten sites in the river and applied a cluster analysis to habitat variables. Results: We collected 7 638 individuals; seven were native species and nine were non-native, including Copadichromis borleyi, a new record for the Amacuzac. Richness per site ranged from eight to 13 species. Habitat variables defined four groups. The most abundant species were Poeciliopsis gracilis, Poecilia maylandi and Amatitlania nigrofasciata. The least abundant species were: Pterygoplichtys pardalis, Ilyodon whitei, Copadichromis borleyi and Ictalurus punctatus. The most prevalent species were: A. nigrofasciata, Amphilophus istlanus, Andinoacara rivulatus, Notropis boucardi, Oreochormis sp., P. maylandi, P., gracilis and Thorichthys maculipinis. The most restricted species were: Atherinella balsana, C. borleyi and I. punctatus. Conclusions: Endangered species such as A. istlanus and N. boucardi are still prevalent in the river, but non-native species continue to increase. Analyzing the diversity from two perspectives provides a more complete view of the changes taking place in the Amacuzac River as a consequence of species establishment, information that is important for future conservation strategies.
