RESUMO

Abstract Beak deformity have a frequency of 0.5% in wild bird populations. In addition to being rare, beak deformities are also poorly reported in the Brazilian scientific literature. Here we report beak deformities in the species: Dendrocincla merula, Amazona ochrocephala and Pheugopedius genibarbis, all of which occurred in southwestern Brazilian Amazon. Dendrocolaptids make intensive use of their beaks in the search for insects and small vertebrates, where they explore in cracks in wood with lateral blows. In the case presented here, this behaviour may have been the cause of the breakage of the tip of this individual's maxilla. In Brazilian territory, few species of parrots were recorded with deformity in the beak and in the individual in this work, everything indicates that Amazona ochrocephala was a captive animal, as it was excessively thin and its diet probably had a low content of vitamins and calcium, where their deficiency even when the animal was a puppy may have contributed to the deformity of the maxilla. Cases of beak deformities in species of the Troglodytidae family are rare, but the individual in this work presented an unusual curvature in the maxilla not observed in other individuals in museum collections. Only with more reports will we be able to better understand the occurrence and causes of these beak deformities in wild birds.

ObjectiveIn order to understand the quality differences between wild and cultivated Bupleurum chinense(BC), modern analytical techniques were used to systematically compare the quality of wild and cultivated BC in terms of appearance characteristics, primary and secondary metabolites. MethodSamples of wild and cultivated BC were collected from the main production areas of Shanxi, Shaanxi and Hebei, and images of BC were collected and their length and diameter were measured using vernier caliper to compare and analyze the characteristics of the two. Referring to the method under extract of CP in the 2020 edition of Chinese Pharmacopoeia, the extract contents of the two species were determined. The cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin compositions of both were determined using fiber analyzer. Quantitative determination of representative saikosaponins, flavonoids and saccharides in BC by ultra performance liquid chromatography(UPLC), headspace gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(HS-GC-MS) was used to determine the types and relative contents of volatile components, and UPLC-quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry(UPLC-Q-TOF-MS) coupled with multivariate statistical analysis was used to screen and identify the differential compounds between wild and cultivated BC. ResultThere were significant differences in the appearance characteristics between wild and cultivated BC, the wild BC had a large root head, twisted and thick axial root, rough epidermis, and often had a stem base and lateral root with dark color and strong odor. However, the cultivated BC has long and straight taproots, delicate epidermis, few lateral roots, light root color and light smell. In terms of primary and secondary metabolites, the contents of alcohol-soluble extract and lignin of wild BC was significantly higher than those of cultivated BC, while the contents of water soluble extract and quercitrin was higher than those of cultivated BC, but the difference was not significant. The contents of cellulose, five saikosaponins, rutin, narcissoside and isorhamnetin-3-O-glucoside in cultivated BC were significantly higher than those of wild BC, and the total water-soluble polysaccharides, sucrose, hemicellulose and starch of cultivated BC were higher than those of wild BC, but the difference was not significant. The results of HS-GC-MS identification showed that a total of 67 volatile components were identified in wild and cultivated BC, 59 in wild BC and 51 in cultivated BC, with a total of 43 compounds in both, and the screening based on variable importance in the projection(VIP) value>1 revealed that the differential components were mainly concentrated in the aromatic and fatty acid compounds. The results of UPLC-Q-TOF-MS-based non-targeted metabolomics combined with multivariate statistical analysis showed that the two were significantly different in saikosaponins and the differential compounds had higher response values in cultivated BC. ConclusionThere are significant differences in the appearance, primary and secondary metabolite contents between wild and cultivated BC. At present, the quality evaluation system of cultivated BC is not perfect, and this study provides theoretical references for updating and revising the quality evaluation standard of cultivated BC and guiding the production of high-quality BC.

RESUMO

ObjectiveTo conduct a systematic comparative study on wild and cultivated Codonopsis pilosula(CP) from three aspects, including characters, microscopy, and contents of primary and secondary metabolites. MethodWild and cultivated CP samples were collected, their characters were measured using vernier caliper, tape measure and balance, the paraffin sections were stained with safranin-fixed green dyeing, and their microstructure were observed under the optical microscope. The content of alcohol-soluble extracts in wild and cultivated CP was determined according to the method for determination of extract under CP in the 2020 edition of Chinese Pharmacopoeia, the starch content was determined by anthrone colorimetry, the content of total polysaccharides was determined by kit method, Fiber analyzer was used to determine the content of fiber components, and ultra performance liquid chromatography(UPLC) was used to determine the content of monosaccharides, disaccharides and some secondary metabolites. Multivariate statistical analysis methods such as principal component analysis(PCA) and orthogonal partial least squares-discriminant analysis(OPLS-DA) were employed to screen key differential components between wild and cultivated CP on the basis of variable importance in the projection(VIP) value>1 and P<0.05. ResultIn terms of morphological characteristics, the "lion's head-like" shape, longitudinal wrinkles, and circumferential wrinkles below the root cap of wild CP were more pronounced in wild CP compared to the cultivated ones. Regarding transverse sectional features, wild CP had more fissures on the outer side of the cortex and a larger duramen. Under microscopic examination, wild CP had more stone cells, a larger proportion of xylem, and the presence of cork cells arranged in rings in the xylem, while cultivated CP has a larger proportion of phloem, smaller vessel diameters, and a more loosely arranged vascular system. In terms of primary metabolites, the contents of 45% ethanol-soluble extract and total polysaccharides in cultivated CP were significantly higher than those in the wild ones(P<0.05), the contents of lignin, hemicellulose, cellulose, fructose and glucose in wild CP were significantly higher than those in the cultivated ones(P<0.05), while sucrose content in the cultivated CP was significantly higher than that in the wild ones(P<0.05). Concerning secondary metabolites, the contents of tryptophan and tangshenoside Ⅰ in cultivated CP were significantly higher than those in the wild ones(P<0.05), whereas the contents of lobetyolinin, lobetyol and atractylenolide Ⅲ in wild CP were significantly higher than those in the cultivated ones(P<0.05). ConclusionThere are significant differences between wild and cultivated CP in terms of morphological characteristics, microscopic features and chemical composition. Glucose, fructose, sucrose, tangshenoside Ⅰ, tryptophan and cellulose components are the key differential components between wild and cultivated CP. Wild CP contains more polyacetylenes and fructose, whereas cultivated CP has higher levels of tangshenoside Ⅰ and sucrose, with noticeably lower cellulose content. These distinctions may be related to their growth conditions, growth years and cultivation techniques. Based on the results of this study, it is recommended to increase polyacetylenes and the content ratio of fructose to sucrose as an indicators to characterize different production methods of CP, in order to guide the high-quality production of CP.

RESUMO

ObjectiveTo compare wild and cultivated Paeoniae Radix Rubra(PRR) in three aspects, including character, microscope, determination of primary and secondary metabolites. MethodSeventeen batches of wild and nine batches of cultivated PRR were collected, their character data were measured by vernier caliper and scales, and their paraffin sections were made by safranin-fixed green dyeing for the observation of microscopic features. The content of ethanol-soluble extracts and total tannin from wild and cultivated PRR was determined by the method of general principle 2201 and 2202 in the 2020 edition of Chinese Pharmacopoeia, the content of polysaccharides was determined by phenol-sulfuric acid method. Anthrone colorimetry was used to determine the content of starch, and Van Soest method of washing fiber was used to determine the content of fiber. The contents of fructose, glucose and sucrose in wild and cultivated PRR were determined by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography evaporative light scattering detection(UPLC-ELSD), and the secondary metabolites(gallic acid, methyl gallate, catechin, oxypaeoniflorin, albiflorin, paeoniflorin, ellagic acid, 1,3,4,6-tetragalloylglucose, galloylpaeoniflorin, 1,2,3,4,6-O-pentagalloylglucose, naringenin, benzoylpaeoniflorin and benzoylalbiflorin) were determined by UPLC. Principal component analysis(PCA) and orthogonal partial least squares-discriminant analysis(OPLS-DA) were used to analyze the data of wild and cultivated PRR, the contribution of different factors to the difference was determined according to the variable importance in the projection(VIP) value>1 and P<0.05. ResultIn term of characters, wild PRR showed the traditional characteristic of Zaopi Fencha, its outer skin was loose and easy to fall off, its surface had longitudinal furrow and wrinkle, but the outer skin of cultivated PRR was not easy to fall off, and its surface was relatively smooth. The radial texture of xylem of wild PRR cross-section was more obvious, showing radial striations, vacuoles and more cracks, while the radial texture of xylem of cultivated PRR cross-section was not obvious, dense and some had cracks. Microscopically, the number of radial vessels arranged in the xylem of wild PRR was more than that of cultivated PRR, the number of calcium oxalate clusters in the phloem and xylem of wild PRR was more than that of cultivated PRR, while the number of starch grains was significantly higher in cultivated PRR. In terms of the content of primary chemical constituents, the contents of polysaccharides and starch of cultivated PRR were significantly higher than those of wild PRR(P<0.05), while the contents of cellulose, lignin, fructose and glucose of wild PRR were significantly higher than those of cultivated PRR(P<0.05). The results of determination of 13 secondary metabolites showed that the contents of paeoniflorin, methyl gallate, catechin and oxypaeoniflorin in wild PRR were significantly higher than those in cultivated PRR(P<0.05), while the contents of albiflorin, gallic acid, ellagic acid, naringenin, benzoylpaeoniflorin and benzoylalbiflorin were significantly lower than those of cultivated PRR(P<0.05). A total of 10 variables contributing to the differentiation between wild and cultivated PRR were screened, including albiflorin, cellulose, benzoylpaeoniflorin, oxypaeoniflorin, naringenin, ellagic acid, starch, lignin, paeoniflorin and total tannins. ConclusionThere are significant differences between wild and cultivated PRR in characters, microscopic characteristics, contents of primary and secondary metabolites. It is suggested that the content ratio of paeoniflorin and albiflorin, the contents of oxypaeoniflorin and cellulose can be used as indicators to characterize production methods of PRR so as to improve the quality standard of PRR. This study can provide reference for the improvement of quality standard of PRR and the guidance of high quality production of PRR.

RESUMO

By reviewing the research history on quality comparison between wild and cultivated Chinese crude drugs, this paper systematically combed the relevant research reports since the 1950s, and summarized and analyzed the results of existing comparative studies, and found that the existing comparative research on the quality of wild and cultivated Chinese crude drugs were mainly focused on several aspects, including characteristics, microstructures, chemical compositions, pharmacodynamic effects, and genetic diversity. Among these, comparative studies of chemical compositions have been the dominant approach, with a particular emphasis on comparing the contents of index components. However, research on pharmacodynamic effects remained relatively limited. Due to various factors such as sample quantity, sample origin, growth period and cultivation methods, the differences in quality between wild and cultivated Chinese crude drugs vary significantly. In general, most wild Chinese crude drugs exhibited higher quality than cultivated products, with significant differences in their characteristics. The contents and proportions of some chemical components underwent noticeable changes, particularly with a marked increase in the proportion of primary metabolites after cultivation. The quality of cultivated Chinese crude drugs is closely related to the cultivation practices employed. Chinese crude drugs produced through wild nurturing, simulated wild planting, ecological cultivation, and other similar methods demonstrate quality levels comparable to those of wild Chinese crude drugs. Based on the analysis results, it is recommended to explicitly specify the cultivation practices and cultivation period of cultivated Chinese crude drugs in comparative studies of the quality between wild and cultivated Chinese crude drugs. Multiple technical approaches, including characteristics, microscopy, non-targeted metabolomics combined with quantitative analysis of differential components, and bioefficacy evaluation, should be employed to comprehensively assess the quality disparities between wild and cultivated Chinese crude drugs. Moreover, research efforts should be intensified to investigate the changes in pharmacodynamic effects resulting from differences in plant cell wall composition, primary metabolites, and secondary metabolites, in order to guide the production of high-quality Chinese crude drugs.

RESUMO

ObjectiveBased on the traditional quality evaluation methods summarized in previous dynasties, this paper systematically contrasted cultivated Astragali Radix(CA) and wild-simulated Astragali Radix(WA) from the aspects of character, microstructure and chemical composition by modern technological means. MethodThe collected CA and WA were compared in characters and microscopic characteristics in cross section, and comparative analysis were performed on the contents of cellulose, extracts, carbohydrate, total flavonoids, total saponins, etc. Then ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometer(UPLC-Q-TOF-MS) and desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry imaging(DESI-MSI) were used to comparatively analyze the secondary metabolites and their spatial distributions in the xylem and phloem of CA and WA. ResultIn terms of characters, the characters and sectional features of WA was consistent with the characteristics of high-quality Astragali Radix, while the CA was quite different from the traditional high-quality Astragali Radix. In terms of microscopy, the phellem layer of CA was thin, and the section fissures were mostly distributed through the cambium in a long strip shape without obvious growth ring characteristics. The cork layer of WA was thick, and the cracks in the section were distributed in the center of the xylem and the outer edge of the phloem in an irregular cavity shape. The cambium was tight without cracks, and had obvious characteristics of a growth ring. In terms of chemical composition, the contents of water-soluble extract, 80% ethanol extract and sucrose of CA was significantly higher than those of WA, while the contents of total saponins, lignin and hemicellulose were significantly lower than those of WA. And the contents of 100% ethanol extract, total polysaccharides and total flavonoids in both of them were generally similar, but slightly higher in WA. The contents of 2 kinds of monoacyl-substituted flavonoid glycosides in the xylem of WA was significantly higher than those of CA, while the contents of 2 kinds of flavonoid aglycones and one flavonoid glycoside were on the contrary. The contents of 7 saponins in phloem of WA were significantly higher than those of CA. ConclusionThere are significant differences between CA and WA in characters, microstructure and chemical components, in which CA has a fast growth rate and a short planting period, and the primary metabolites such as water-soluble extracts and sucrose are more enriched, which is the reason for its firm texture and sweetness being significantly higher than those of WA. However, the contents of lignin, hemicellulose and some secondary metabolites in WA are significantly higher than those in the CA, which are close to the traditional description of characters and quality. Based on the results of this study, it is suggested to strengthen the production of WA, improve the supply capacity of WA, and gradually upgrade the current standard. It is recommended to increase the contents of monoacyl-substituted flavonoid glycosides, total saponins and other indicators that can characterize different production methods, so as to guide the high-quality production of Astragali Radix.

RESUMO

Aims@#Heavy metals are significant environmental pollutants and toxic to life and chromium (Cr) (VI) is one of them being discharged in the environment due to many human activities. The leather industry uses Cr(VI) salt in the tanning process, which is discharged untreated and becomes a source of many diseases. The use of microbes to remove metals is a cost-effective and clean method. The present study aims to isolate local and native microbes for Cr(VI) removal from tannery wastewater and enhance their capacity to bioremediate the tannery wastewater. Further, efficiency in free and immobilized forms was also checked.@*Methodology and results@#Microbes were isolated from a local tannery wastewater outlet and after many rounds of minimum inhibitory concentration, and concentration of 500 µg/mL was found to be that concentration at which microbes could survive, above which they died. The sequencing of 16S rRNA and its analysis showed that it was closely related to Staphylococcus saprophyticus and in the given study, it was named B6. At 37 °C, pH 7.5 and 120 h of incubation, it removed 77% Cr(VI) from the reaction mixture. B6 was exposed to UV to obtain mutant. Exposure of 15 min to a UV lamp gave mutant MB6, which showed a removal capacity of 77% after 72 h only. Cr(VI) removal capacity of the mutant was then analyzed in the free and attached form where coal and sodium alginate were used as solid surfaces. Mutants immobilized on coal showed 91% Cr(VI) removal after 96 h, while sodium alginate showed 58% Cr(VI) removal in 120 h, thus showing coal as a more effective surface for adsorption.@*Conclusion, significance and impact of study@#Our present study shows the use of cheap and environmentally friendly methods to remediate tannery wastewater, which is a big problem in a country like Pakistan. Pakistan is the second largest producer of leather but lacks a wastewater treatment facility. So, this method offers in-situ wastewater treatment, which can be further enhanced in different ways.

RESUMO

Objective:To investigate the preventive and therapeutic effects of compound wild chrysanthemum eye pad on blue light-induced alteration of meibomian gland function in mice and its mechanism.Methods:Sixty-four 15-week-old male C57BL/6J mice were divided into two groups of 32 mice each according to random numbers for the prevention test and the treatment test. The respective 32 mice in the prevention and treatment experiments were randomly divided into normal group, blue light group, solvent group and eye pad group according to random numbers, with eight mice in each group, respectively. In the prevention experiments, mice in each group were exposed to blue light at a wavelength of 460 nm and a light intensity of 2 000 lx for 6 hours per day for 15 consecutive days to establish a mouse model of meibomian gland function changes except for the normal group. The solvent group and the eye pad group were treated with the corresponding eye pad before and after the blue light exposure for 25 minutes daily for the 15 consecutive days. The blue light group was treated with blue light exposure only for 15 days, and the mice were photographed at the edge of the meibomian gland on day 15 to observe the function of the meibomian gland except for the normal group. In the treatment test, all groups of mice except the normal group were induced the altered function of the mouse meibomian gland by the above method. The solvent and eye pad groups were treated with corresponding eye pads for 25 minutes in the morning and afternoon of each day for 15 consecutive days after blue light exposure. The blue light group was kept in a standard environment for 15 days and the changes in meibomian gland function of mice were detected by meibomian gland photographs on day 15.Photography of the eyelid margin in vitro, oil red O staining, and hematoxylin-eosin staining were performed to observe the histologic changes in the meibomian glands of mice after the preventive and experimental treatment. The relative expression of interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) mRNA in mouse meibomian gland tissues was detected by real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR.The expression of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) and phosphorylation of NF-κB (p-NF-κB) proteins in mice meibomian gland tissues was detected by Western blot to assess the degree of amelioration of blue light-induced inflammation in mouse meibomian glands by the compound wild chrysanthemum eye pad. This study was conducted in accordance with the Statement of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology on the Use of Animals in Ophthalmology and Vision Research, and was approved by the Animal Ethics Committee of Xiamen University (No.XMULAC20220258). Results:Compared with the normal group, a gradually increased number of blocked meibomian gland openings, and a gradually decreased remaining area of lower meibomian gland, were observed in the mice after 15 days of blue light group, and all the differences were statistically different (all at P<0.05). In the prevention test, the number of obstructed opening in the eye pad group was 1.833±0.753, which was significantly less than 3.667±1.033 in the solvent group ( P<0.05). The relative remaining area of the lower lid meibomian gland in the eye pad group was 0.718±0.091, which was significantly greater than 0.624±0.130 in the solvent group ( P<0.05). Hematoxylin-eosin staining showed inflammatory cell infiltration in mouse meibomian gland in the blue light and solvent groups. There was no inflammatory cell infiltration in eye pad group, and the morphology of the acini was similar to that of the normal group.Oil red O staining showed that there was no significant lipid deposition in the groups. The relative expressions of IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, and IFN-γ mRNA were significantly lower, and the relative expressions of NF-κB and p-NF-κB proteins were significantly lower in the eye pad group than in the solvent group, showing statistically significant differences (all at P<0.05). In the treatment test, the number of obstructed openings in the eye pad group and solvent group was 4.333±1.211 and 4.833±1.722, respectively, and the relative remaining area of the lower meibomian gland was 0.572±0.151 and 0.588±0.154, respectively, showing no statistically significant differences (both at P>0.05). Hematoxylin-eosin staining showed inflammatory cell infiltration in mouse meibomian glands in the blue light and solvent groups, with a similar morphology of acini as in the normal group. There was no inflammatory cell infiltration in eye pad group.Oil red O staining showed that there was no significant lipid deposition in the groups. The relative expressions of IL-1β, IL-6, and IFN-γ mRNA were significantly lower and the relative expressions of NF-κB and p-NF-κB proteins were significantly lower in the eye pad group than in the solvent group (all at P<0.05). Conclusions:Compound wild chrysanthemum eye pad may have preventive and therapeutic effects on blue light-induced changes in meibomian gland function by reducing the inflammatory response of meibomian gland tissue through the inhibition of the NF-κB signaling pathway.

RESUMO

The present study recorded the consumption of paca and agouti meat and revealed the presence of hydatid cysts in the livers of these rodents in extractivist communities in Brazilian Amazonia. A total of 42 families (with a median four of members per household) were interviewed, of which 98% (n=41) reported the consumption of paca and 86% (n=36) the consumption of agouti. Structures consistent with hydatid cysts were detected more frequently in the liver tissue of the pacas (74% 31 of 42 samples) than the agoutis (26% 11/42). The parasitological analysis of a paca liver confirmed the presence of E. vogeli. The consumption of the meat of these rodents and the confirmation of infection by E. vogeli represent preoccupying risk factors for the inhabitants of these forest communities, given that the uncooked viscera of both rodents are often fed to domestic dogs.

Morphological features are essential to assess neonates' viability. In order to characterize the morphology and biometry of newborn agouti, 36 animals born at 103 days of gestation under human care in Teresina-PI, Brazil were evaluated. After birth, the newborns were weighed on digital precision scales, measured with a flexible tape measure and their external morphology was assessed. The animals observed had coat color trait of adults, open eyes, hairs in the nasal region and four incisor teeth. The forelimbs had developed four digits and the hind limbs three digits, with white edged claws and a short hairless tail. The following were observed: weight of 144.58 ± 33.39g and lengths: crown-rump 14.73 ± 1.82cm, total 19.88 ± 1.52cm, head to tail 16.95 ± 1.55cm, head 7.33 ± 0.59cm, thoracic girth 11.78 ± 1.36cm, abdominal girth 10.73 ± 1.21cm, tail length 1.18 ± 0.25cm, eye diameter 1.27 ± 0.27cm and ear length 0.21 ± 0.35cm. The agoutis presented morphological maturity at birth with external morphology very similar to that of the adult animals. Most of the births in this species are the double type and newborns that weigh more than 90g have better chances of survival in captivity.

RESUMO

Aims: This study aimed to assess the in vitro antibacterial effects of extracts from four wild food fruits: Balanites aegyptiaca, Saba senegalensis, Ziziphus mauritiana, and Raphia sudanica. Place and Duration of Study: The samples of plant material were collected at Banamba and Sikasso, Mali between January and May 2018. The bacterial strains were collected at Research Centre for Biological Food and Nutritional Sciences (CRSBAN), University Professor Joseph Ki-Zerbo; Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The experimental parts were also carried out at CRSBAN from October 2019 to January 2020. Methodology: The fruit extracts were screened for antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, S. aureus, B. cereus, and L. monocytogenes strains. The diameters of the inhibition zones (ID), the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) as well as the minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC) were evaluated using agar diffusion method. Results: The findings revealed that these parameters have varied as a function of fruit species and/or their zones of provenances. All fruit extracts showed significant growth reducing effect against all the tested bacteria. The extracts from R. sudanica have exhibited the strongest growth-inhibiting activity specifically against E. coli (ID = 15.33±0.58 mm) and Salmonella typhi (ID = 18.00±1.00 mm) with lower MIC (from 2.08±1.44 to 5.83±1.44 mg/mL). Moreover, the MBC/MIC ratios revealed that the extracts from the studied fruits possess mainly bacteriostatic effects towards the tested strains. Conclusion: These findings support local therapeutics properties attributed to these fruits. They also demonstrate that, in addition to their nutritional values, these edible fruits could be used for developing antibiotics to treat infectious diseases and food poisoning.

RESUMO

Abstract The tick Amblyomma tigrinum inhabits areas with diverse climatic conditions, with adult stages parasitizing wild canids, such as chilla (Lycalopex griseus) and culpeo (Lycalopex culpaeus) foxes. We described the infestation loads in wild foxes captured at three sites (periurban, rural and wild) through an anthropization gradient in north-central Chile. We tested whether local-scale environmental and/or individual host factors can predict tick abundance by using negative binomial models. During 2018-2020 (spring and summer), we captured 116 foxes (44 chillas and 72 culpeos), and 102 of them were infested with ticks (87.9%, CI=80.6-93.2%). We collected 996 A. tigrinum adult ticks, estimating a total mean abundance of 8.6±0.8 ticks/host. Periurban and rural foxes harbored greater tick loads than foxes from the wild site (2.34 and 1.71 greater, respectively) while tick abundance in summer decreased by up to 57% compared to spring. Tempered, more humid climate conditions of the periurban site could favor the development and survival of adults A. tigrinum; and ticks may have adopted a quiescent stage or similar survival mechanisms to cope with summer temperature increases related to the ongoing megadrought. Further studies are warranted to understand the underlying factors determining the life cycle of A. tigrinum at larger spatiotemporal scales.

Rodents are very important organisms within ecosystems; however, some species are considered pests because they consume and damage crops and because they are vectors, hosts, or reservoirs in the transmission of emerging infectious diseases. Rodents in Bolivia are represented by 148 species, Oligoryzomys microtis (Allen, 1916) being a species of public health importance because it is considered a potential natural reservoir of the Chapare virus, which causes Chapare Hemorrhagic Fever, and it is a deadly disease for humans. Its impact on public health is still unknown. The present study consisted of recording the presence of the species O. microtis through the use of Sherman-type live capture traps for small mammals arranged in linear transects in the wild and intervened habitats of the Samuzabety community, where the Chapare virus was detected for the first time, this community is located in the Chapare Province of the department of Cochabamba, Bolivia. The species recorded were the rodents Oligoryzomys microtis (morphotype matogrossae), Proechimys brevicauda, Neacomys vargasllosai, Hylaeamys perenensis, and the marsupial Metachiurus nudicaudatus. The presence of the species O. microtis (morphotype matogrossae) in the community of Samuzabety is confirmed. This species is associated with forest habitats with nearby and surrounding crops. The species O. microtis has epidemiological relevance as it is the natural reservoir of the Río Mamoré Hantavirus and is currently considered a potential reservoir of the Chapare virus and other Arenaviruses.

Abstract Anthropogenic disturbances affecting forest areas can increase disease prevalence and susceptibility in several species of arboreal mammals, such as sloths. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the most common conditions in body systems of free-ranging sloths admitted at the Wildlife Triage and Rehabilitation Center of Amazonas of the Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources. A total of 227 individuals (139 retrospective cases from 2015 to 2019, and 88 prospective cases from July 2020 to July 2021) were evaluated over a six-year period. Cases from the genus Bradypus showed involvement of the following body systems: 44% respiratory, 29% integumentary, 15% musculoskeletal, 5% digestive, 3% visual, 2% auditory, 1% circulatory and 1% genitourinary, while that distribution in the genus Choloepus was: 39% musculoskeletal, 27% integumentary, 19% respiratory, 9% digestive, 3% circulatory, 1% visual, 1% auditory and 1% genitourinary. The results reveal significant differences between the condition detected and the genus (Bradypus and Choloepus), age and case outcome. These results can provide data for future investigations of sloth diseases, confirming lesions, as well as motivating and suggesting adequate management methods.

RESUMO

Wild animals can be natural reservoirs of different microorganisms, essential for monitoring these pathogens for the generation of knowledge and creation of tools aimed at programs for the prevention and control of infectious diseases, including zoonoses. The objective was to report the fungal diversity in the skin of pacas in captivity in Acre, Western Amazon, Brazil. Twenty-six animals were evaluated, from which skin samples were collected by superficial scraping, hair avulsion, and sterile plastic brush. The samples were seeded on Mycosel agar, and the phenotypic characteristics of the colonies were analyzed. In 80.8% of the samples, different fungi were isolated, from the genera Candida, Microsporum, and Trichophyton, among others. This is the first description of the identification of fungi in the skin of pacas and suggests that these animals can be considered essential reservoirs of saprophytic or pathogenic microorganisms with zoonotic potential in the Western Amazon.(AU)
