Malocclusion is one of the factors that influence the patient's oral health status. The WHO estimates malocclusions as the third most prevalent oral health problem, after dental caries and periodontal diseases, presenting several factors and may impact the quality of life of patients with such occlusal conditions. The objective of this work is to evaluate the knowledge of dental students and dentists in relation to the knowledge about malocclusion and to relate the types of malocclusions related to harmful habits of patients and quality of life. through the method of applying a questionnaire on the knowledge of dental professionals about malocclusion, aimed at academics and professionals trained in dentistry. For this research, a questionnaire was made with the help of Googles Forms that was sent through social networks to 892 professionals and academics. A return rate of 2.34% (38 responses) was obtained within the stipulated period. And the survey results show that professionals know the theory but cannot apply it in practice. Therefore, professionals do not appear to be able enough to indicate the appropriate treatment for a patient with malocclusion. It is extremely important to increase the level of knowledge of dental professionals and academics on how to recognize and diagnose malocclusion, making them able to refer to the correct treatment. Recognizing the importance of the subject in the life of the dental student and the dental surgeon.

The evolution of treatments in implantology has enable a change in rehabilitation treatments for edentulous patients, making it possible to place fixed prostheses that provide a better quality of life for these patients. In order to ensure good performance and satisfactory longevity, it is essential to maintain an appropriate standard of oral hygiene and professional maintenance. Thus, the objective of this work was to conduct a literature review on the main resources available for cleaning and maintenance of complete fixed prostheses on implants (Branemark protocol), both in the patients' home care and in the professional care provided by the dentist. A nonsystematic electronic search was carried out in the Lilacs, Pubmed/Medline, Scielo, and ScienceDirect databases, crossing the following descriptors: "Oral Hygiene"; "Dental Implants"; "Dental Implantation"; "Maintenance"; "Dental Prosthesis, ImplantSupported"; and "Prosthodontics". Literature review articles, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, randomized clinical studies, and relevant books on the subject published from 1995 to 2022 were consulted. The literature available indicates that the main instruments recommended for home care are toothbrush, dental floss, interdental brush, oral irrigator, toothpaste, and mouthwash. In the professional dental office, special attention should be given to the instructions given to the patient, as well as to motivate and encourage their engagement in the hygiene routine, in addition to periodontal monitoring, possible screw replacements, and installation of an occlusal splint when necessary. Maintaining adequate oral hygiene is essential for the success of fixed prostheses on implants, and the dentist plays a crucial role, not only in providing periodic patient follow-up, but also in suggesting the most appropriate instruments, instructing on adequate oral hygiene, and motivating the patient to maintain satisfactory oral health(AU)

Introduction: dysphagia is the alteration in swallowing mechanisms that coexists with multiple diseases and conditions. The broad knowledge of this alteration will generate better diagnoses and treatments for the improvement of the quality of life of these patients. Although this alteration could be common domain by specialists in the area of health, mainly oral, there is no recent information on the level of knowledge about dysphagia in dental personnel. Objective: to determine the level of knowledge about dysphagia in a group of oral health professionals from Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. Material and methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in a group of 241 dentists (social service intern, general dentists, periodontists, endodontists, rehabilitators, pediatric dentists and orthodontists) through a survey, the reagents used were on knowledge of dysphagia, diagnostic methods, signs and symptoms, treatment and complications. Results: half of the surveyed population reported knowing swallowing disorders (64.7%). In contrast, when using the term «dysphagia¼ the posture of knowledge decreased considerably (40.7%). Finally, the lowest values in the survey were found in the lack of knowledge about identification of signs and symptoms of dysphagia (36.1%), diagnostic methods (20.7%), treatments (18.7%) and complications (23.2%). Conclusion: there is a low knowledge of self-perceived swallowing disorders by dentists, which suggests the search for the factors that cause the lack of knowledge of dental professionals (AU)

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the intra- and inter-examiner reliability when using the DC/TMD axis 1 and verify the replicability and validity of the data obtained. Methods: The sample comprised 30 volunteers (students) of the Instituto Universitário de Ciências da Saúde Norte (Portugal). The calibration process consisted of a volunteer selection, theoretical and practical training, data collection, and agreement calculation. Examiners received proper previous training. Three dental practitioners applied the questionnaire (T1) and re-examined all the participants one week later (T2). To measure the degree of inter and intra-examiner agreement, multiple Kappa coefficients were obtained when nominal or ordinal variables were involved. When the correspondence between quantifiable variables was assessed, Pearson correlation coefficients and their statistical significance were replicated. Results: Regarding opening patterns, a strong overall agreement was obtained, only showing discrepancies in left-assisted and unassisted maximum openings (from -0.034 to -0.370 and -0.630 to -0.933, respectively). A high level of inter-examiner agreement during TMJ noise during the opening assessment was obtained, only displaying variations in clicks (Kappa -0.423 to 0.757). Protrusion movement showed negative kappa and weaker agreement of all measurements (Kappa between -0.034 and -0037). Small discrepancies were obtained from palpation assessment (left lateral pole- Kappa -0.034).Conclusion: There was no discernible and persistent difference in the amount of agreement among the three examiners, demonstrating that all three examiners were capable of participating in data collecting by employing the DC/TMD questionnaire. The findings indicated nearly perfect intra- and inter-examiner concordance scores.

The dentist is the professional qualified to prescribe antimicrobial agents intended for the prophylaxis or treatment of bacterial infections. In Brazil, sales require prescription retention and are notified in the National Controlled Products Management System (SNGPC). The objective of this study was to analyze the consumption of antimicrobials prescribed by dentists, based on data provided by the SNGPC between 2015 and 2021. Amoxicillin, azithromycin, amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, cephalexin, metronidazole, erythromycin, clindamycin, ciprofloxacin, ampicillin and tetracycline were the top sellers and the top five accounted for 92% of all sales. The states with the highest sales were São Paulo and Minas Gerais, with Rio Grande do Sul and Rio de Janeiro alternating between third and fourth positions. The lowest sales occurred in the North and Northeast regions, especially in Acre, Amapá, Roraima and Piauí. Although it is not possible to know the reason for the prescription, as the clinical indication is not reported in the SNGPC, the study provides a national overview on the prescription of antimicrobials by dentists. It is observed that the highest consumption occurred in regions with the highest human development index, which may reflect greater access to dental care.

Objective: To analyze the level of knowledge of the dental professional about violence committed in children and adolescents, emphasizing the importance of their actions for the detection, care and referral of potential cases that allow, within a multidisciplinary context, an intervention timely and effective. Materials and methods: A survey was carried out with 132 dentists, 123 women and 9 men, with professional experience of 2 to 43 years, university professors in the specialty of pediatric dentistry, students of specialization course and related postgraduate courses or those who carry out their work activities in 2 public hospitals in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires that care for minors. The survey included 15 questions distributed in 3 categories whose thematic axes delved into knowledge about violence committed against minors (Category 1), suspicion of alleged child abuses in the consultation (Category 2) and factors that condition the eventual referral of the case (Category 3). Each question included in the 3 categories is addressed according to whether the professional field of the surveyed subject was a specialist/graduate student (Group 1) or a hospitalist (Group 2). Results: In the first category, a significant lack of specific training is observed in the undergraduate stage with 89% for group 1 and 93.75% for group 2, although the latter have accessed courses and improvement activities aimed at to increase skills and abilities by 71.87%, in contrast to 24% in the other group. Likewise, 29% of group 1 and 50% of group 2 knew the protocols established in their professional environments. Both considered that the dentist is not trained to detect guiding behaviors towards possible cases (89%, group 1; 87.5%, group 2). For the second category, group 1 responded positively by 73%, while group 2 did so by 84.38%. In the third category, a high percentage stood out for group 1 in the questions related to the dentist's fear of aggravating the actions of family violence (64%) or retaliation (55%) against the child if he made the referral. In the same items, group 2 responded with dissimilar percentages (28.13% and 31.25%, respectively). Finally, the results were clearly differentiated in terms of lack of knowledge of the procedures to follow if a case warrants referral, with 71% for group 1 and 34.38% for group 2. Conclusion: It is imperative to instruct and train the professional dentist, raising awareness about the need to know current legislation and the detection and subsequent referral mechanisms. Although those who carry out their work at the hospital level seem to be better prepared to act, there is an evident widespread lack of knowledge that entails the risk of not announcing or acting inappropriately in cases of violence that threaten the safety of children and adolescents (AU)

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the relationship between patients' and dentists' perceptions of shade selection and its impact on satisfaction with the prosthesis. Material and Methods: A single group pre-post study was conducted at the Prosthodontics department of a teaching hospital in India. One hundred ten participants were selected through a systematic random sampling technique with inclusion and exclusion criteria. Patients' attitudes regarding the aesthetics of their maxillary anterior teeth were recorded using a validated questionnaire. Shades for the intended prosthetic crown selected by the dentist and chosen by the patient were recorded separately, and patient satisfaction with the appearance of the final prosthesis was recorded. We used descriptive statistics followed by Pearson's Chi-square test and a binomial logistic regression model for inferential statistics. Results: 109 participant's data were available for final analysis. Patients choose lighter shades than the dentist's selection, which is statistically significant (p=0.000). 73.4% were satisfied with the final prosthesis, and the binomial logistic regression model identified using patient-selected shade for the final prosthesis was significantly associated with patients' satisfaction with the final prosthesis (OR=3.3, p=0.001). Conclusion: The patient's preference should be considered with the dentist's option when selecting a shade to create good esthetics.

Introduction: High-power laser therapy has established satisfactory proportions in dentistry and has become the first choice for surgical procedures, bringing quality of life to patients and convenience to surgeons. Objective: To report a clinical case of lingual frenectomy using high-power diode laser, highlighting the benefits of this approach. Case report: A female patient, leucoderma, without systemic alterations, arrived at the Dental School Clinic of the Federal University of Campina Grande with the main complaint of alterations in her phonology. In the intraoral examination, difficulty in lingual movement and a heart-shaped tongue due to fibrous insertion of the frenum were observed, indicating Ankyloglossia. After explanations of the condition, treatment, and signing of the Informed Consent Form, the surgery was initiated: antisepsis, anesthesia with vasoconstrictor, and continuous mode using a high-power diode laser configured at 2W of power, 600µm fiber, at an infrared wavelength, with the aim of uniformly separating the fibers and promoting immediate tongue mobility. Finally, a simple suture was performed using absorbable thread. For the postoperative period, Dipyrone was prescribed for pain relief, and follow-up was established. At the 7-day follow-up, normal healing was observed, and the patient did not require the medication. At 30 days, complete healing and discomfort-free mobility were observed, along with the patient's testimony of improvement in social relationships, self-esteem, and swallowing. Conclusion: The results presented in this article confirm the benefits of choosing laser therapy over conventional methods, demonstrating the absence of bleeding during and after surgery, promoting tissue repair, reducing surgical time, increasing comfort, and decreasing the use of medication. Therefore, the use of surgical laser is associated with an improvement in quality of life.

Abstract Objective: To assess factors associated with knowledge, attitudes, and practices (RAP) related to teledentistry among dentists in Jakarta during the COVID-19 pandemic. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study used a self-administered online questionnaire with a purposive sampling technique. Survey items comprised knowledge of, attitude toward, the practice of, and barriers to teledentistry. The Chi-square, Mann-Whitney, and Spearman correlation tests were used to determine factors associated with RAP of teledentistry. Results: A total of 183 dentists in Jakarta completed the questionnaire. The findings showed that 95.6% of the surveyed dentists had good knowledge, 83.1% expressed positive attitudes, and 60.7% practiced teledentistry during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most participants (86.3%) expressed a willingness to practice teledentistry in the future. The three most significant barriers that obstruct dentists from practicing teledentistry are patient compliance and satisfaction regarding the dentist's physical presence, a low population education level, and a lack of technological infrastructure. A statistically significant relationship was found between teledentistry practice and age, marital status, working experience, and training regarding teledentistry. A positive correlation was found between knowledge of and attitude toward teledentistry. Conclusion: Dentists in Jakarta have a high understanding of, positive attitudes toward, and good practices for teledentistry. Factors related to teledentistry practice were age, marital status, work experience, and training experience in the last two years.

Abstract Objective: To compare the use of sealants in permanent molars between public and private dentists in Brazil. Material and Methods: This was a cross-sectional and analytical web survey study. The convenience sample consisted of dentists in Brazil who answered a pre-tested online form released via social media between July and October 2021. Descriptive analysis was performed using absolute and relative frequencies (%) and associations using the Chi-square test (p<0.05). Results: Brazilian professionals participated in the study (n=2,244). Comparing the professionals from the public service with those from the private service, the former had a higher positive perception of the use of sealants as a preventive (92.4% vs. 81.1%, p<0.00l) and therapeutic procedure (90.7% vs. 82.4%, p=0.00l), higher percentage of non-invasive (91.7% vs. 83.8%, p<0.00l) and invasive (22.8% vs. 12.0%, p< 0.001) techniques. Professionals from the private service reported more frequently that they did not use sealants than those from the public service (14.0% vs. 4.8%, p<0.00l). Resin sealant (97.7% vs. 94.9%, p=0.0l5) and Flow resin (62.0% vs. 54.3%, p=0.013) were the most used by professionals in the private service. The use of glass ionomer cement was not associated with the type of service (75.1% vs. 77.2%, p=0.172), nor was the use of adhesives (0.6% vs. 1.4%, p=0.195) or resin with Giomer technology (1.9% vs. 2.2%, p=0.856) (p>0.05). Conclusion: The percentage of use of sealants among dentists in Brazil is high, especially among professionals in the public service, and the most used materials were resinous sealants and glass ionomer cement.

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the agreement among three different online drug-drug interaction (DDI) checkers for the detection of psychotropic drug interactions among dental patients in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Material and Methods: Between January and December 2017, a cross-sectional study was conducted in Minas Gerais with data on pharmaceutical claims of psychotropic drugs prescribed by dental practitioners. Data from the Pharmaceutical Management System provided the drug dispensing history of the patients, allowing the identification of those on concomitant medication use. The occurrence of DDI was determined by entering the name of the drugs taken by each patient into Merative Micromedex®, Medscape®, and DrugBank. The degree of agreement among the three DDI online checkers was analyzed using the Fleiss' kappa test. Results: Overall, 797 dental patients were found to be taking some psychotropic medication with other drugs simultaneously. The number of patients with DDI varied according to Micromedex® (n= 366), Medscape® (n= 473), and DrugBank (n= 736). The agreement between the DDI checkers was poor (Fleiss' kappa: 0.165; p<0.001). Conclusion: The online DDI checkers assessed in this study showed variations in their ability to detect interactions and poor agreement among them.

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze oral health services for pregnant women in the primary health care of a Brazilian metropolis, based on the performance of dentists who integrate these services. Material and Methods: Exploratory, descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted through qualitative and quantitative approaches. A semi-structured questionnaire was used for data collection. This study was conducted in a Brazilian metropolis and included all dentists working in primary health care. The compliance analysis was performed considering access, adherence, group activity and individual dental care dimensions. Open questions were analyzed using the content analysis method and the closed questions were performed using frequency estimates. Bivariate statistics (Chi-square, Fisher's Exact Test, α<0.05) were analyzed through STATA. Results: 260 dentists agreed to participate in this study. Strategies to facilitate the scheduling of pregnant women to dental treatment occur in 93.9% of oral health teams, the main one being the scheduling and/or referral performed by the family health team. In terms of access and adherence to treatment, all variables in these dimensions showed relevant compliance results. The group activity dimension presented moderate compliance percentages, whereas individual care obtained high results, except for referral to radiography. Conclusion: The oral health service was compliant regarding access and adherence to treatment, but showed limitations in individual care and collective activities. Recommendations include improving oral health team coverage and permanent education programs.

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess children's self-reported distress during dental procedures and investigate risk factors. Material and Methods: A total of 163 children (3-10 years old) were included from a clinical trial on diagnostic strategies for evaluating restorations in primary teeth. Treatment plans were elaborated based on the clinical examination performed at the baseline of the study. Dentists performed 742 dental procedures, and an external evaluator collected children's self-reported distress through the Wong Backer Facial Scale (WBFS) and dentists' opinions about children's behavior during the treatment. Kruskal-Wallis Test was performed to compare the distress and the dentists' perception of the different dental procedures, and multilevel ordered logistic regression analysis was conducted to the evaluate association between explanatory variables and the outcomes. Results: More complex procedures caused more distress in children (p=0.017), with a 5.5 times higher risk than simple operative treatments. Similarly, dentists reported children's worse behavior (p<0.001). Older children (older than 7 years) reported less distress than younger children (OR 0.52; CI 0.30-0.87; p=0.014). Patients reported greater distress in the first consultations, reducing the chance of higher scores by 16% in the next interventions. Conclusion: Children experience higher levels of distress during their first treatment appointments. More complex operative procedures and the child's age below 7 years were risk factors associated with greater distress during dental treatment.

Abstract Objective: To analyze the existing state legislation, including not only the ordinary laws, but also their infralegal regulation and the state legislation on Hospital Dentistry. Material and Methods: A survey was carried out in the databases of the Legislative Assemblies of the Brazilian States and the Federal District, as well as the Regional and Federal Councils of Dentistry in Brazil. Subsequently, a survey was carried out in the databases of the Ministry of Health, State Dental Councils and Federal Dental Council in Brazil. Results: Only 8 Brazilian states have legislation in force regarding hospital dentistry, which represents 29.63% of the federative units. Among the Brazilian regions, the Midwest presented the highest prevalence of the laws found (37.50%), followed by the North (25%) and the other regions with the same coverage (12.50%). Also, an orientation and an ordinance from the Ministry of Health, six resolutions from the Federal Council of Dentistry, and a technical note from the National Health Surveillance Agency were found. Conclusion: Several States do not have rules on the subject, making it imperative to create a federal rule that not only imposes the presence of the dentist, but also regulates the proportion of the team, workload, and availability.
