摘要

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of odontogenic jaw cysts in a Libyan population and to compare the data with previously published reports from other countries. We retrieved and analyzed 2190 case notes and biopsy records of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology, Al Arab Medical Sciences University, Benghazi, Libya, dating from January 1990 to December 2005. There were 326 cases [14.8%] of diagnosed odontogenic cysts among the 2190 biopsies performed during this period. The cases were analyzed for age and sex distribution, site of presentation, association with impacted teeth, and the method of treatment. The male to female ratio of patients was 1.3:1 Radicular cysts accounted for 222 cases [68.1%], followed by dentigerous cysts [n=49, 15%] and odontogenic keratocysts [n=43, 14.1%]. Mean ages of the patients were, respectively, 31.7, 22.7 and 36.1 years.. The maxilla was more commonly involved than the mandible [1.3:1]. The anterior maxilla was the commonest site [n=132, 37.4%] followed by the posterior mandible [n=96, 29.4%]. Fifty three cases were associated with impacted teeth, and the highest frequency was for dentigerous cysts [n=37]. Enucleation and curettage was performed on 300 patients, marsupialization on 14, and marginal/segmental resection on 12. To our knowledge, this is the first such study on a Libyan population. Our results are comparable to studies from other countries. Knowledge of the relative frequencies and sites of presentation of odontogenic cysts in different ethno-geographic backgrounds is essential for the early diagnosis and management of these benign yet potentially destructive lesions Key words: polycystic, ovary, hirsutism, diabetes, obesity

摘要

A sixteen year-old female Libyan patient complained of a painless swelling in the lower anterior area of one year duration. The swelling progressively increased in size. Clinical examination revealed intra-oral swelling in the lower mandibular central, lateral and canine areas bilaterally, which could be palpated lingually and labially, with slight redness but no ulceration of the covering mucosa. The swelling was hard in consistency. Vitality test was positive for lower centrals, lower right lateral and lower right canine but there was no response form the lower left lateral and left canine. Intra-oral radiographs and occlusal film of the lower anteriors and OPG showed multilucular radiolucency in the anterior segment of the mandible extending from lower right second premolar to the lower left canine, with well-defined margins, destruction of the lower border of the mandible and displacement of the lower centrals and laterals. There was no resorption of the roots of the related teeth. Under general anaesthesia a flap was raised in the region of lower right second premolar to the lower left first molar. The lesion was found to be perforating the labial cortex and extending lingually. Curettage of the lesion was performed, all teeth were preserved; although they were displaced and the roots were exposed, there was a small perforation on the lingual plate in the region of lower left premolars. Haemostasis was achieved, flap was closed with 3/0 black silk suture. Brown tumour of hyperparathyroidism was excluded by biochemical investigations. The diagnosis was confirmed with the biopsy result

摘要

In this case report a 12 year-old Libyan male with classical features of cleidocranial dysplasia is presented. Treatment suggested was partial denture construction to replace upper incisors for aesthetic reasons, as the patient complained of missing of his anterior teeth, followed by extraction of retained deciduous teeth and surgical removal of the supernumerary teeth, and surgical exposure of the embedded permanent teeth; as their roots were at least 50% developed, followed by orthodontic treatment
