ABSTRACT
The anticipation of death is one of the most terrifying human sensations. Thinking about one's own death involves a movement of great complexity to the psyche, as there is no unconscious or experiential correlative to sustain its representation. Therefore, death itself is unrepresentable to the psyche. However, subjects who face the fear of death in a daily basis need to find symbolic ways of representing their feelings and thoughts. Psychosomatic suffering meets this topic as a way of possible discharge, even though it is characterized by depletion of the subject's symbolic capacity. The psychosomatic patient, through the real lesion of organs, externalizes in the body the psychic conflict that is pulsating and searching for expression. Given this, the present study aims to investigate possible relations between the fear of one's own death and the psychosomatic suffering. To illustrate the theme, clinical vignettes of a psychoanalytic psychotherapy patient will be used.(AU)
