RESUMO
JUSTIFICATIVA E

ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND AND

OBJECTIVES:

The major causes of death in Brazil are cardiovascular disease and cancer. Among these, the metabolic syndrome (MS) is considered responsible for about 40% of deaths in women over 20 years of age, and breast cancer (BC) is the most common cancer in women aged below 60 years. However, whether there is an etiopathogenic relationship between them is still unclear. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between MS and BC, and their epidemiological, etiopathogenic and clinical relationships. CONTENTS Systematic review of literature through PubMed articles with the keywords "breast cancer" and "metabolic syndrome", without restriction of date of publication. Among 186 articles assessed, 56 were selected in which the association between BC and MS were properly reported. There is consistent evidence that BC and MS not only share many common risk factors (i.e. age, dyslipidemia, obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia, systemic inflammation), but also that the treatment of one of these conditions seems to influence the prognosis of the other one. However, the mechanisms by which MS and its components can predispose to BC are still uncertain, as well as, if in the presence of BC, the treatment of SM should be different from current guidelines.

CONCLUSION:

This study explicit the clear correlation between SM and BC. However, further studies are needed to clarify all the pathophysiological mechanisms involved, thus expanding the possibilities of treatment in these cases.
