RESUMO

Young children's use of digital technologies has presented challenges for parents, particularly in response to an increased reliance on digital resources during the Covid-19 pandemic. This mixed-methods study explored young children's digital practices within the context of their families and homes. Although this study was originally planned, the timing of data collection meant that it was uniquely positioned to capture parent perspectives as the pandemic and first lockdown was unfolding in Australia. Data was collected through questionnaire (N = 101) and semistructured interview (n = 20) about status and change in children's digital practices, and parents' rules and flexibility in governing these experiences. Quantitative findings suggested children's frequency and duration of digital device use trended upwards during lockdown, and parents were more flexible in their rules about the amount of screen time, as well as when and where children could use digital devices. Qualitative results suggested that, more than a temporary and situational change, for many parents, exposure to new ways of engaging with digital technologies facilitated a shift in their perceptions, leading to greater consideration of quality in their choices for their children. This study highlights the influential role of parents in shaping children's digital experiences. Understanding their perceptions, as well as children's current and shifting digital practices in the home, is important for informing efforts and guidance for supporting young children's safe and effective use of digital technologies.

RESUMO

In the present digital era, technology is being extensively used as an aid to teach different skills in a language teaching course. With the sudden outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, where technology that was being used for peripheral tasks and activities in education so far, has now become pervasive in the learning spaces. Tech aids such as audio, video, internet, educational tools, etc. are the popular ones among teachers at all levels. The present study aims to explore the use of one such tool - Digital Spinning Wheel that has been used as a tool for conducting Just-a- Minute sessions in the Effective Public Speaking course being offered at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, one of the premier engineering institutes of India. The study also makes an attempt to understand students' perceptions about the appropriacy of the choice of the tool and the effectiveness of the instructional tool as used by the course instructors. For the study, a questionnaire was designed and circulated through Google Form among all the students of the course. The findings of the study suggest that the Digital Spinning Wheel makes the classroom activity interesting and dynamic and also ensures objectivity and fairness during the conduction of the evaluative component, Just-a-Minute. © 2022 IEEE.

RESUMO

Purpose>Studies have shown that managing household solid waste from low-cost housing in urban and sub-urban communities is challenging, especially in developing countries and COVID-19 era. Previous research proved that the fourth industrial revolution (4IR) technologies could be engaged to improve urban public services such as household solid waste. Thus, the study investigated 4IR role in improving low-cost housing solid waste management (LCHSWM) in the COVID-19 era across Malaysia's cities.Design/methodology/approach>The researchers selected four Malaysian cities (Pulau Pinang, Kuala Lumpur, Kuching and Putrajaya) to achieve the study's objectives via a qualitative research design. The study engaged forty experts through semi-structured virtual interviews. A thematic approach was used to analyse the collected data.Findings>Findings identified initial high implementation and maintenance costs, unwillingness to accept change, inadequate knowledge and skilled personnel to manage the operation, amongst others, as the perceived challenges facing 4IR technologies in managing low-cost housing solid waste across Malaysian cities in the COVID-19 era. Also, the study proffered measures to improve 4IR technologies usage.Research limitations/implications>This paper is limited to the perceived contributory challenges and proffered measures to improve 4IR technologies usage in managing LCHSW across Malaysian cities in the COVID-19 era.Practical implications>Proffered measures will stir policymakers and the political class (city councils) to start thinking of an all-inclusive approach to addressing the issue of LCHSW in the 21st century. As part of the practical implications, the possible outcome might enhance collaboration between the public and private sectors to better service delivery to mitigate environmental degradation.Originality/value>As revealed in the review, there is a paucity of literature regarding digital technology's roles in mitigating LCHSW across Malaysian cities in the COVID-19 era.

RESUMO

This article reports on a study that investigated primary-school English-language teachers' use of digital technologies in their in-person classrooms after a period of online teaching necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. It also explored the perceived effects the period of online teaching had on the teachers' practices. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with sixteen experienced Hong Kong primary-school English-language teachers approximately one year after they returned to in-person teaching. The findings suggest that the period of online teaching has led to a greater utilization of technology for teaching. In addition, they suggest digital technologies are now embedded in teachers' regular teaching practices, with the digital technologies adopted primarily those that enhance existing practices. Common digital technologies include: (1) learning management systems;(2) digital noticeboards;(3) interactive digital worksheets and quizzes;and (4) interactive presentation software. Examples of how teachers use digital technologies, and considerations for their use, are provided.

RESUMO

This essay rereads Kazuo Ishiguro's depiction of the relationship between health, care and socio-economic inequality against the backdrop of our present time of crisis in which the COVID-19 pandemic features centrally. The pandemic has directly and indirectly laid bare and exacerbated various international crises and injustices that are shaping the structure of feeling of our times. Although Ishiguro's work does not (yet) address or represent the pandemic directly, the oeuvre is interesting for the ways it frames and responds to the many societal crises that characterise the early twenty-first century - and which the pandemic revealed and intensified. This essay explores specifically the ways in which Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go (2005) thinks about health, well-being and care in contemporary society, and how it depicts our own troubled empathetic relationship to institutions like the NHS and its workers. It will proceed to explore how Ishiguro's Klara and the Sun (2021) considers a new kind of crisis, namely, the interrelation of digital inequality and digital well-being, a problem the COVID-19 crisis intensified and accelerated. It concludes with an analysis of Ishiguro's call for a new social contract that is rooted in a new attitude towards others and the world that is open and dialogic.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND:  Sleep deficits caused by the overuse of digital technology is observed among medical students. Due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, an emergency remote teaching method was put into practice, which may have resulted in changes in the sleep-wake cycle. The balance between the influences of external and internal synchronizers can be affected by sudden alterations in daily life, including changes in nightly habits and sleep quality, which can lead to increased levels of anxiety and reduced functional performance, for example. OBJECTIVE:  To understand the relationship between the use of digital technology, changes in the circadian cycle, and academic performance during the pandemic. METHODS:  The present is an analytical, cross-sectional, observational study in which a sample of 123 medical students filled out an online questionnaire on self-perception regarding sleep quality and academic performance before and during the pandemic. RESULTS:  Assessing changes in sleep quality and productivity, the study revealed that 100% of the students made continuous use of screens before bedtime. Thus, during the period of social distancing and remote classes, 77.2% of the students reported "poor" or "very poor academic performance, which was probably related to the fact that 65.9% of these students were unable to maintain their productivity due to daytime sleepiness. CONCLUSIONS:  The prolonged use of screens was associated with poor sleep quality and changes in academic performance, with significant psychological impact. Thus, it is worth emphasizing the importance of sleep hygiene in light of the new forms of teaching implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a result of the increased level of uncertainty and variability of the socioeconomic environment, the influence of various social pathologies (for example, the COVID-19 pandemic, etc.) has grown, that have significant negative consequences for the functioning of society. Modeling the most important factors and trends in social development will help to resist the impact of modern negative changes. From the analysis of the socio-economic development of the Republic of Uzbekistan, it is obvious that there exists the effect of all those factors and trends in social development that are positive and are primarily associated with STP (including the digitalization of society), as well as the effect of negative factors associated with various social pathologies. The strategy of development of the Uzbek economy is aimed at strengthening the former and limiting the latter.

RESUMO

The globalization of the economy - and with it, new emerging markets - has increased competitive pressure exponentially, rendering customer retention, a highly relevant factor in attracting new consumers. As a result of differentiation and technological globalization, competitive strategies must increasingly leverage the digital channel to not only foster client relationships but also create and offer value. Consequently, companies are using the digital medium to develop not only new services but also unforgettable experiences. Despite the importance of these changes, few scholarly works have studied the influence of this virtual experience on customer retention, channel loyalty, and recommendations to third parties (i.e., word-of-mouth). Against that backdrop, this chapter provides an in-depth analysis of how virtual media shape the relations between companies and their clients. Traditional concepts such as customer experience, satisfaction, trust, loyalty, and recommendation become especially relevant in the digital context, where the adoption of technology has undeniably reshaped people's relationships with companies and each other. This study has immediate implications for the business field, where sustainable growth largely depends on fostering loyalty and recommendations. The conclusions are also highly relevant to a world scenario reconfigured by the Delta Variant, COVID-19 pandemic, which has created a volatile environment and exposed the inefficiencies in how companies relate to their customers. Clients' needs and expectations are constantly evolving, as customer-centricity is the vital key to any corporate success in the changing world of the 21st century. © 2021 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.

RESUMO

This article focuses on the issues in the implementation of digital technologies under the adversarial principle during pre-trial proceedings under the sanitary and epidemiologic restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19. We highlight the active use of digital technology during the trial stage and its detailed legal regulation stipulated in the Criminal Procedure Code of the Russian Federation, as compared with the pre-trial proceedings. We suggest possible solutions through the implementation of digital technology in pre-trial proceedings as in the trial stage. We discuss the advantages of the electronic format of criminal case files that will be beneficial for the realization of the adversarial principle in the pre-trial proceedings.

RESUMO

The Indian banking industry is undergoing significant changes due to advancements in technology and increasing adoption of smart data analytics. One of the key trends driving the industry's future is the increasing digitization of banking services, facilitated by the growth of digital payments and mobile banking. The use of digital payments has resulted in the collection of large volume of data on customer behavior and preferences, which is being used by banks to assess their credit worthiness and manage the risk. The Government has introduced initiatives to encourage digital payments and the Covid-19 pandemic has further accelerated the adoption of digital banking services and data explosion.

RESUMO

During COVID-19, the author, like most psychoanalysts and psychotherapists, was forced to move her practice from in-person to a digital platform (Zoom) Although her Initial expectation was that much of the therapeutic value of the group experience would be diminished, she was surprised that the contrary proved to be evident: Her pre-existing groups flourished, and there appeared to be no loss in efficacy based on member self-report data. The author makes the case that group analysis is essential to a comprehensive analytic experience and not an addendum to individual analysis. The author explores her theoretical positions and provides personal commentary from some of her patients on the transition to and experience of in-person versus telehealth options. [ FROM AUTHOR]

RESUMO

Chronic pain is a major clinical challenge in Scotland and across Europe as a whole. 18% of the United Kingdom population are currently affected by severe chronic pain. Health Boards and Third Sector Organisations shifted to digital services due to COVID-19. The aim of this literature review was to examine the patient's perception, engagement, and satisfaction of digital pain management services and what this shows for the future after the pandemic. Published literature on chronic pain management studies conducted in the UK or EU from 2017 to 2021 were reviewed. The results of the literature were compared with the latest survey conducted by Pain Association Scotland (PAS) on digital service delivery during the pandemic. Five papers were found. The outcomes reported were acceptance, feasibility, pain intensity, attrition, and cost-savings. When compared with the results from the PAS survey, there were some similarities found in patient engagement and outcomes, namely, increased coping, a reduction in GP visits and the request for a blended model of self-management delivery going forward. Digital chronic pain management is feasible and there is evidence of suggestive benefits during and before the pandemic. There is a need for funding, clear protocols and pathways, resource training and further focused research within the UK population, for this method of service delivery to become mainstream.
