No particular group seems to be preferentially affected. Half of vitiligo patients have an onset before the age of 18 years. In regions where leprosy is endemic, individuals with vitiligo are often stigmatized due to similarities in appearance between the two diseases. We will review this important subject, emphasizing the latest therapeutic advances.

Histoid lepromas of lepromatous leprosy.

Histoid lepromas are a rare eruption in patients with lepromatous leprosy. A 59-year-old man from India with lepromatous leprosy who developed histoid lepromas and who was dapsone resistant was studied. These tumors resembled cutaneous metastases. This Indian man is to our knowledge the first patient to be reported with this rare disorder in the continental United States.

Acquired ichthyosis: a marker for internal disease.

When ichthyosis occurs in adulthood, it may signify internal disease, including sarcoidosis and malignancy,--especially Hodgkin's lymphoma. Other systemic diseases associated with acquired ichthyosis are leprosy, hypothyroidism, chronic renal failure and nutritional deficiencies.
