ABSTRACT

A pharmacist facinated by materia medica Henri Bocquillon-Limousin (1856-1917) get married with the daughter of Stanislas Limousin in 1885. After being graduated from pharmacy high school of Paris, he joined the laboratory of Jungfleisch. Afterwards, he briefly worked in the municipal laboratory of Paris and then he turned to a pharmacy activity. He took up the pharmacy of his father in law in 1887. His research was mainly directed to materia medica and valorization of colonial medicinal plants. Thanks to a well expanded network of associates, he managed to obtain an important collection of medicinal plants which is actually preserved in "Francois Tillequin museum - Collections of materia medica" in the faculty of pharmacy of Paris. H. Bocquillon-Limousin is also well known for his numerous editions of Formulaire des medicaments nouveaux and his books in the field of material medica.

ABSTRACT

It is well-known that the modern history of salicylates began in 1899 when the compound acetylsalicylic acid was registered and introduced commercially as "aspirin" by the Bayer Company of Germany. As a matter of fact, however, remedies made from willow bark had been used to treat fever and rheumatic complaints at least since 1763, when Edward Stone described their efficacy against malarian fever. A number of Italian scientists made significant contributions during the long period of research leading up to the synthesis of acetylsalicylic acid and its widespread use in rheumatic diseases. In this paper we will review the contributions of some of these researchers, beginning with Bartolomeo Rigatelli, who in 1824 used a willow bark extract as a therapeutic agent, denominating it "salino amarissimo antifebbrile" (very bitter antipyretic salt). In the same year, Francesco Fontana described this natural compound, giving it the name "salicina" (salicin). Two other Italian chemists added considerably to current knowledge of the salicylates: Raffaele Piria in 1838, while working as a research fellow in Paris, extracted the chemical compound salicylic acid, and Cesare Bertagnini in 1855 published a detailed description of the classic adverse event associated with salicylate overdoses--tinnitus--which he studied by deliberately ingesting excessive doses himself. Bertagnini and above all Piria also played conspicuous roles in the history of Italy during the period of the Italian Risorgimento, participating as volunteers in the crucial battle of Curtatone and Montanara during the first Italian War of Independence.

ABSTRACT

The objective of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a homeopathic complex in terms of intensity of attacks and duration of remission between attacks of genital herpes. Fifty three patients aged 18 or over with a minimum of four attacks annually were followed in this open multicentre study in a primary care setting. The principal parameters analysed were: frequency of attacks; intensity of symptoms, during treatment and/or after stopping treatment; treatment tolerance. Eighty-two percent of patients treated for recurrent genital herpes benefited. In 41% of cases, there was no recurrence after the first treatment with follow-up of between 8 and 50 months. In 32% of patients, one or two relapses, in 9% of patients recurrences continued but with reduced frequency and intensity.

ABSTRACT

This is a tentative attempt to do justice to the memory and reputation of the French wife of Samuel Hahnemann, covering briefly their meeting and marriage in Saxony, their life and work together in Paris and after her husband's death, her declining years in poverty and obscurity. Melanie has been presented to English readers mainly through foreign eyes, not always friendly. Even on the complete information I have so far been able to assemble, I feel justified in trying to put the record straight
